RUMOR: Apple Mac mini coming in March; to use Nvidia Ion platform
Friday, January 16, 2009 - 09:25 AM EDT

"A large portion of the Apple Mac community is waiting for Apple to refresh the Mac Mini line. We learned today that the next generation of Mac Mini computers will be based on Nvidia's Ion platform," Tuan Nguyen reports for Tom's Hardware.

"An Nvidia partner confirmed to us that Apple was the first to receive samples of Nvidia's Ion platform... In fact, Apple received prototype units long before Nvidia partners who opted to work on Ion. We're told that some partners still only have blue prints of Ion," Nguyen reports.

"Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro unibody notebooks already use Nvidia's 9400M GPU for graphics duties, and this GPU is precisely what Ion uses. The GPU is capable of full HD video decoding and also supports Nvidia's CUDA technology for more general purpose computing. Pairing up with the 9400M is Intel Atom 330 processor," Nguyen reports.

"Because of the size of the Ion platform, we can expect the new Mac 'ini to be even smaller than the current generation unit. Our source also informed us that Apple will be launching the new Mac 'ini sometime in March of this year," Nguyen reports.

Nguyen adds in an update that "Apple may be using Nvidia's Ion platform for an updated Apple TV" as well and repeated "an Nvidia partner explicitly said Apple has Ion for Mac mini."

Nicely played. It is better to let Apple's new team release new and upgraded products to show the world that Apple without Steve is still a powerhouse of innovation and quality service!

I would expect that they are a bit Off the the Mac Mini will be a Core 2 Duo and the Nvidia ION like the Mac Book and the Atom and Nvidia ION combo will become the new updated Apple TV.
The Atom in the Mini would be a big step backwards in speed for the Mini. But the Atom Processor would cool off the Apple TV and allow Apple to make it even thinner while the ION will allow better HD upscaling to 1080p.
I think they just have the Apple TV and Mac Mini mixed up.

Makes sense to apply these power saving products to Apple TV to take it out of hobby status.
Integrate Slingbox and actually use the USB for a change, along with DVR.

Please be true - I need a new Mac, and the mini is all I can afford.

The atom is something more suitable for netbooks imo.

The "Mac 'ini"? Is that smaller than the Mac "outie"?

@demon
I agree that this is inaccurate or mixed up at best.
The TV could get Intel's Atom - but not the Mac Mini.
Intel Atom in the Mini would be a huge decrease in performance over the current Core 2 Duo offered in the Mini. Nobody wants that.
The only way this could be true is if Apple is trying to make a new style of "Mini" that is smaller and less powerful and less expensive and perhaps running OS X the way the iPhone does - in a special purpose way and not as a full-featured computer like a MacBook or current Mini.
All these rumors get tiring!

Sounds like a MacBook Mini ... Mac MiniBook ... Mini MacBook is on the way.

Please please, keep a firewire port on it

Hey! There wasn't a single word about Steve Jobs' illness or Apple's succession plan in that article. I feel cheated.

Jan 16, 09 - 01:03 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

Well spark you have solved that little matter.

On more important matters I agree how would the mini sell with that inferior spec. The Apple TV on the other hand would be considerably improved with that spec for the purpose for which it is designed.

"Because of the size of the ion platform, we can expect the new Mac mini to be even smaller than the current generation unit."

If that's the case, that means it's stuck with "notebook" class drives, limited upgradability, and probably no internal power supply. So the improvements would amount to dedicated video and higher CPU clock speed. If that all it proves to be, that's not much of an upgrade.

Whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIRST POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jan 17, 09 - 12:34 am Comment from: treestman

A Mac Mini with an Atom processor? WTF? Even with better graphics the thing would be a performance dog compared to the old-generation C2D it uses now.

No. Way.

Jan 17, 09 - 06:42 am Comment from: bioness

Two ethernet ports with the mac mini please!!!

Sep 01, 09 - 06:40 pm Comment from: Margaret
