RUMOR: Apple Mac OS X Leopard to replace ‘Aqua’ with ‘Illuminous’
Monday, December 11, 2006 - 03:05 PM EST

"Apple Gazette has received a tip from an apple insider that the Mac OS Aqua User Interface will be replaced with a new UI named Illuminous," Michael reports for Apple Gazette.

"The source goes on to say that we will see a demonstration of Illuminous at Macworld 2007," Michael reports.

Michael reports, "The gensis for this rumor started earlier this year when Apple posted a position on Monster.com seeking a senior visual interface designer 'to conceive, design and develop future enhancements to Aqua, the dynamic user interface for Mac OS X.'"

Full article here.

"Apple [on Firday] seeded a new version of Leopard (build 9A326) to internal Apple employees. This latest build is reported to have fixed bugs from the last build (9A303) such as Quicktime crashing, printing problems and issues with .Mac such as iDisk synching. Apple continues to gloss over the interface, refining it even more and there is an overly presence of black gloss," MacShrine reports.

Sounds sexy...we'll see.

Dec 11, 06 - 03:12 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

...but wait - how will Oreo, I mean Aero, from Microsoft be able to keep up? Not fair! Not fair!

Dec 11, 06 - 03:17 pm Comment from: R

If it looks like M$'s teh Shiny®, I won't be happy.

Dec 11, 06 - 03:21 pm Comment from: Viktor

Ohh! no, Redmond took 5 years to copy the aqua interface and now there is a new one? Poor microsoft....

Dec 11, 06 - 03:22 pm Comment from: carlo

ok this move on apples' part to keep us waiting for 'top secret' features is totally unfair.

28 days and counting. . . . . . . . .

its times like this i wish i was run over by a car and was in a coma for 27.5 days

Dec 11, 06 - 03:26 pm Comment from: Erg4000

The NeXT GUI is back !!

I laways admired the clean, elegant and grey NeXT Step graphical user interface:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEXTSTEP

I think, it's time now to switch from Aque to a NeXT Step like GUI.

Dec 11, 06 - 03:30 pm Comment from: fatal

i guess they are better names than KDE and Gnome

Dec 11, 06 - 03:33 pm Comment from: LordRobin

I dunno. I like Aqua. I hope this isn't "change for changes sake".

Dec 11, 06 - 03:33 pm Comment from: Jake

Did someone say GREY would be the dominant color in the Leopard GUI??? NOT gonna happen!

Dec 11, 06 - 03:34 pm Comment from: effwerd

Black gloss? Ugh.

Apple's New UI Guidelines:

"Eh, whatever."

Dec 11, 06 - 03:39 pm Comment from: Dion

ErG4000. Right on. Apple Computer today is really NeXT Computer. Its like NeXT bought Apple a few years back.

I'm suprised that Apple doesn't sue MS for copyright infringement. Vista is a flat-out rip-off of OSX.

Dec 11, 06 - 03:42 pm Comment from: Erg4000

Hi Jake:

Just have a look at iTunes 7 (rollbar) and you will have a sneek preview on Leopard ! It's clean, aesthetic and it's GREY. Aqua is history...

The GUI of the Operating System shouldn't dominate the application UI.

Dec 11, 06 - 03:45 pm Comment from: Ball mer

I see....Vista, Media Player, etc have lots of black. Apple will try to launch Leopard before Vista just to say they copied them?

Dec 11, 06 - 03:47 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Firday is my favorite day of the week.

Dec 11, 06 - 03:51 pm Comment from: Erg4000

Yes Dion, MacOS X is based on the NeXT Step. The NeXT still lives on in Steve Jobs' heart and one day there will be a real reincarnation of the black NeXT Cube with it's clean hardware design and GUI.

Dec 11, 06 - 03:54 pm Comment from: Jake

Hi, Erg4000.
That only works for iTunes, and even something similar in iPhoto, because in those programs there are bright and colorful icons as a contrast (i.e., album covers and photos). Without such a contrast, it would be terrible. At least, IMHO.
Cheers.

Why not brown gloss?

Oh, zune has that patent.

Dec 11, 06 - 04:01 pm Comment from: NeverFade

Carlo - I was in a coma. You don't want to be in one. They're not fun...

Dec 11, 06 - 04:08 pm Comment from: rasterbator

I hope they are referring to the Default look. Apple would be smart to allow theming natively in OS X's next commercial build (Leopard).

Dec 11, 06 - 04:10 pm Comment from: calpundit

From the MacShrine article:

"TextEdit also features support to export and open new Word 2007 documents"

Assuming this is correct, what are we to make of MBU's claim that translators for Office 2k4 are a major pain and betas won't be ready until spring at the earliest?

I'm not a technical person, but it seems to me that if Apple -- Mr. Softie's sworn enemy -- can make translators in a month, that a unit of Mr. Softie should be able to make them happen even faster.

Am I missing something?

Dec 11, 06 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Grey is wretched

The grey in iTunes 7 looks like complete crap.

Dec 11, 06 - 04:21 pm Comment from: Joe

Have not been on here i a while

No way will they put out a whole new interface in 10.5

They gonna save that for OS 11
When you change the whole interface, it doesn't keep the same designation.

Dec 11, 06 - 04:23 pm Comment from: Line4

And Firday comes right before Saturnday.

Dec 11, 06 - 04:28 pm Comment from: bond co. stooge

Oh man, those were the days--I wanted a NeXT cube so bad I could spit. I was learning VAX/VMS assembly at the time *lol*

I remember finding a dealer in Austin, and the whol kit and kaboodle was mine for a mere 10k or so grin

Dec 11, 06 - 04:28 pm Comment from: ken1w

It an effort to keep up with Apple, Microsoft renames its OS interface from Aero to Aeronimous...

"Grey is Wretched"

Agreed--Am I the only one who thinks that it looks like you could scratch it with a hard stare? And it's not even real (wtf?)

Peterson, pass the lithium, please...

I had an opinion once.

Dec 11, 06 - 04:40 pm Comment from: mrwright613

ok, so i know a mojority of people hate it, but i for one really hope that all of leopard looks just like itunes 7

Dec 11, 06 - 04:45 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

I am very glad to hear about a potential redressage of the Aqua interface style. It was acceptable once the pinstripes disappeared, but I for one will be most glad for a new look. Shape Shifter has been a very handy application for me over the last several years.

Regarding MS's propensity for duplicating the creative efforts of others - A few "eternal truths" have struck me in my relatively short time on this Earth and one is, What Goes Around Comes Around. The more MS copies the ideas of others while simultaneously shutting out any real competition (legally and otherwise), the deeper the hole gets under the foundation of their organization, or should I call it an institution...

Dec 11, 06 - 05:03 pm Comment from: MacBill

Please, no more interface changes, Apple! It's fine the way it is!

Dec 11, 06 - 05:10 pm Comment from: ??

Dec 11, 06 - 05:26 pm Comment from: Cripe

iTunes 7 is ugly and reminded me of MP3 sites from 5 years ago. I'm sorry to see such a beautiful thing go south. I get to look at gray all day on my work PC too!...wonderful. I'm tellin ya iTunes 7 looks like death. I'll definately spend less time on my Mac.

Dec 11, 06 - 05:38 pm Comment from: me

Yes, please give us some GUI options. The old GUI is far too childish. Time for a professional looking UI. The Pro apps look far better than the iLife apps. I don't want candy buttons for kids. I want a serious UI.

I can't wait to see Leopard. It's gonna need to blow Vista away. Make MS look STUPID Apple.

Dec 11, 06 - 05:44 pm Comment from: Figurative

In related news, Microsoft today announced that the next generation of UI to be seen in Vista 2.0 (due 2017) will be called A r e o l a.

It is widely assumed this move is to consolidate Microsoft's tenuous hold on the teenage male gamer market.

Blue Steel?

Dec 11, 06 - 06:36 pm Comment from: Switched

Lots of black gloss huh? I think I've seen that somewhere before!

If this is true, it will truly make Apple look bad. I don't want my GUI have the look and feel of Vista.

BTW, where the heck is all that grey in iTunes 7 you keep talking about? Them scrollbars are blue! Not just traditional glossy shiny Aqua blue.

MDN MW: "leave" as in "leave my neat Aqua GUI alone, Steve!"

Dec 11, 06 - 07:53 pm Comment from: slimer

People, please read the Monster ad carefully:

"to conceive, design and develop future enhancements to Aqua, the dynamic user interface for Mac OS X."

It says enhancements, not replacements. And as far as that goes, well duh. I HOPE Apple is continually evaluating and refining their products, including UI's. That's how you win.

<opine>
That said, I've always found Aqua too "washed out", with too much white space. I use a custom display profile with a dark gamma and white point; the standard ones are just too bright.

So IMO Aqua could use some darkening up, or at least an option to darken UI elements. Maybe we'll get that with resolution independence.

Dec 11, 06 - 08:12 pm Comment from: same only different

I'm suprised that Apple doesn't sue MS for copyright infringement. Vista is a flat-out rip-off of OSX.

Vista is to Windows what breast implants are to a psycho old bitch.

Let MS copy all they want, she's still the same ugly old Witch Windows underneath. The fight will be the same, Vista just gives you something different to look at.

... "Not Luminous" Holy crap, is there no English major on the staff of MDN?

as in, "Not a chance" that this moronic post is correct.

MDN, it's really NOT necessary to post every idiotic, imbecilic rumor that crosses your paths.... or that you scrape off the bottom of your shoe.

Aquaman is not happy.

Dec 11, 06 - 10:34 pm Comment from: MacRaven

I was fortunate enough to have been in the audience to watch Steve demo his NeXT computer many years ago. It was amazing. I remember the 3D graphics looking so incredible at the time. All I could think was "Wow! He's done it AGAIN!"

Dec 11, 06 - 11:59 pm Comment from: McGherkinstein Jones

Hwy MDN: That texas ad doesn't work properly in firefox (Linux). It blocks all of the user comments along side it, and it actually killed this comment entry on a previous story (trying to remember which one).

Dec 12, 06 - 12:02 am Comment from: Anger Monkey

I think that Apple should just buy shapeshifter and allow users to make their machine look any color they want. I would like to have more dark colors personally, I like the soft shiny black that is in iTunes, but I want to be able to choose elements for each application. That is one of several things Linux has on OSX, complete customization built right in.

Dec 12, 06 - 04:44 am Comment from: hmmmm

Has anyone thought that maybe the finder will be replaced with a front row style environment? You cycle through your folders and application just like front row, with added core animation effects like Time Machine. Windows and applications have a black glossy look when opened? Who knows, it would be a whole new way to use a computer. Maybe they would even integrate it all with a Moble OS for the iPhone or iPod. It would also work with iTV. It would be a simple and elegant system for anyone to use. Just food for thought.

Dec 12, 06 - 07:58 am Comment from: Transition

" I don't want my GUI have the look and feel of Vista."

When Apple completes stage 2 of it's WinTel switch program, it's only a matter of time before your GUI is Vista.

Steve will probably do an intermediate version of Mac OS X that looks a lot like Vista to ease the transition for you all. Then you'll be able to claim that it's OK to move to Vista because it looks just like Mac OS X.

Dec 12, 06 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Cubert

I HATE the new scrollbar in iTunes 7! There is no depth to it. No 3-D.

And, ChrissyOne, don't you mean that you're favorite day is "Furday"?

wink

Dec 13, 06 - 05:30 am Comment from: Diarith

"Illuminous" is not a word, therefore that makes it easier to copyright! smile

Mar 25, 09 - 04:19 pm Comment from: Freelancelot

I would really like to see a light AND dark version of the new interface, but have them use universal elements so that they can be switched between easily...even per app. The HUD window concept could work well with some things like QT, Preview, iCal, Address Book, Font Book, etc. I really envision them using windows a bit more like well designed Widgets...which use html and css for styling. That alone would kick ass.
