RUMOR: Apple MacBook Pro update coming soon
Monday, February 04, 2008 - 04:17 PM EST

"Last week, we'd heard an unconfirmed report that three new MacBook Pro models had appeared in Best Buy's inventory tracking system. Some inventory screenshots we received today appear to confirm this earlier report, showing off the upcoming $1999 price point MacBook Pro," Arnold Kim reports for Mac Rumors.

"These new SKUs come with the exact same price points as current MacBook Pros ($1999, $2499, $2799) and show an in-stock date of February 10th, 2008," Kim reports.

"The new MacBook Pros will likely incorporate only modest updates (Penryn and Multi-Touch)," Kim reports.

Just a modest 'bump'?

Feb 04, 08 - 05:08 pm Comment from: MainMan

Just over half a year old and already my MacBook Pro is out of date! Such is progress.

Feb 04, 08 - 05:31 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

New monitors? PLEASE?

Feb 04, 08 - 05:38 pm Comment from: Jamie

Makes sense to me, seeing as  have about 300 patents (?) on Multi-touch™

I think gestures will play a large part in Leopard in the near future.

Feb 04, 08 - 05:54 pm Comment from: Loru

they already have gestures sorta in current macbooks, couldnt they just update the drivers for current macbooks to incorporate the multigesture. I mean, i use 2 fingers for scrolling, why not 3 for swiping?

Feb 04, 08 - 05:55 pm Comment from: AppleMan

Unfortunely if all these MacBook Pro models come with glossy only screen options, be prepared for a lot of pissed off professionals.

I won\'t buy the MacBook Air until it has a matte screen.

Imagine a nasty glare screen on the MBA?

The glare screen would most likely weight more than the computer! wink

Feb 04, 08 - 06:01 pm Comment from: MikeK

Apple knows better than to go glossy on pro machines..

If they did such a dumb thing, they'd lose a lot of customers.

I've been an Apple user for 20 years, but I will NEVER buy a glossy display or notebook.

Feb 04, 08 - 06:13 pm Comment from: mr_matalino

Rumor? Hasn't this been news for awhile?

Feb 04, 08 - 06:14 pm Comment from: Sum Jung Gai

Nonsense. Pro users have the sense to do color-sensitive work in dimly lit, glare-free environments. The glossy displays are far superior to matte screens for pros.

Feb 04, 08 - 06:22 pm Comment from: Predrag

Not again the glossy-matte discussion. I have an impression that all this noise about the glossy screens is coming out of the same ten guys who've been diligently padding online surveys, posting on every forum in the world and pretty much tirelessly trying to keep this non-issue alive for the longest time possible.

Apple does not do stupid things such as this. If matte was what the majority wanted, you'd have had iMacs and MacBooks in matte long time ago. The two most popular Mac lines would NOT be glossy-only if any meaningful market was not taken care of by the glossy screen. Obviously, the market share for non-glossy is negligible.

Feb 04, 08 - 06:24 pm Comment from: Jamie

@Sum Jung Gai

An excellent answer. I've often wondered why these 'color pros' that constantly moan about glossy displays, do all their correction work in offices with fluorescent lights.

Maybe they should alter their environment, and the problem will disappear?

Feb 04, 08 - 06:59 pm Comment from: Gil

This style of MacBook Pro/Powerbook has been around since 2003. I say a brand spanking new style a la the Macbook Air.

Feb 04, 08 - 07:07 pm Comment from: Mark

When is Apple going to beef up the video card and give us a higher resolution screen?

Feb 04, 08 - 07:07 pm Comment from: Afib

I hope that updates include:

1. Multi-touch trackpads
2. Penryn processors
3. New cinema displays
4. Longer lasting batteries

Feb 04, 08 - 07:24 pm Comment from: helen

I would buy one, but I have lost so much money owning Apple stock that I will have to wait....

Down another $2 today.

Feb 04, 08 - 07:33 pm Comment from: MikeK

"Nonsense. Pro users have the sense to do color-sensitive work in dimly lit, glare-free environments. The glossy displays are far superior to matte screens for pros."

Actually, that is nonsense.. Most pros do everything possible to reduce glare from displays. And the first step to reducing glare is not to use a glossy display..

Furthermore, when I said pros, I was not referring to strictly graphics and color pros... I do pro audio for a living, color accuracy is not a major priority for me. However, I do stare into my display for very long periods every single day. For that reason alone I would NEVER use a glossy display. And trust me, in my field, I am the majority.

Feb 04, 08 - 07:40 pm Comment from: MikeK

"Obviously, the market share for non-glossy is negligible."

Obviously, it's not negligible. Otherwise, you wouldn't still be hearing about it all the time in Apple stores, Apple discussion and Mac related websites..

Go ahead and ask an Apple store employee how many times a day he hears people complaining about glossy displays.. I have talked to several in different locations and they all say the same thing.. Glossy is the number one complaint they hear about the new iMacs, and glossy only MacBooks are the number one reason customers (who would otherwise be content with a MacBook) upgrade to the MacBook Pro..

Feb 04, 08 - 08:06 pm Comment from: Arion

I was hoping that they would upgrade the hard drive size too. Maybe 250gb if possible. Since most laptop at that price range have a bigger hard drive. Still waiting on the next update before buying. If they upgrade the hard drive, change cpu, add multi touch and an extra usb 2 port then that would get me buying the machine.

Feb 04, 08 - 08:23 pm Comment from: Willie G

you people who do nothing but piss and moan about glossy screens are really a sad, sad lot.. get the hell over it already

Feb 04, 08 - 08:52 pm Comment from: AshNazg

I have yet to understand the beef with glossy screens.

I've got a glossy screen on my MacBook and I love it. I've used it outdoors, inside various coffee shops, at home, in school... pretty much everywhere. It's great and I've never had a problem with glare that couldn't be very easily solved by a slight screen tilt (10 degrees, if that). It's bright and crisp and I would never go matte again...

Quit yer whinin'!

Feb 04, 08 - 09:12 pm Comment from: MikeK

Well when you do professional work and are staring a mirror like screen for 10+ hours a day maybe you will understand the "beef" with glossy displays.

Anyone can deal with the casual coffee shop internet browsing on a glossy, it's real work I'm talking about.

Feb 04, 08 - 09:18 pm Comment from: @helen

Buzz off, you are a poser. If you are honest, you shouldn't have your money in an individual stock. Dink.

Feb 04, 08 - 09:23 pm Comment from: A Mole who knows

Count on this tomorrow - they are in the back room:

Woah! "You people"? Whattdya mean "you people"?!

Feb 04, 08 - 10:10 pm Comment from: Dolita

I'd be utterly dissappointed if Apple snub their pro consumers by putting the glossy display.
Wake up, Jobs. Glossy screen is a fad and very bad for people who need to sit hours and hours in front of computers!

Feb 04, 08 - 10:13 pm Comment from: LinuxGuyAndMacProdigalSon

I prefer matte screens, but I detest the thread hijacking done by the pro matte fanatics. For you hijacking f**ktards, go find a blog story about matte vs. glossy and post it. Then, have at it so the rest of us can discuss the issue the thread is supposed to be about.

Perhaps MDN should post a matte vs glossy thread, keeping it at or near the top of the threads list to catch the spew cuming from the hijackers.

Feb 04, 08 - 10:47 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

Actually, Penryn and multi-touch are exactly what I've been hoping for in a Mac Book Pro update. I believe that I'll be in the market to replace my Powerbook soon, and I was hoping for exactly this "small bump." smile

Feb 04, 08 - 10:54 pm Comment from: MacSheikh

For god's sake people! For the last time, just buy one of those damn matte screen stickers/covers/filters/whatever its called and stick them on your damn glossy screen. Either that or DON'T buy the ones with glossy screens. The end.

Feb 04, 08 - 11:02 pm Comment from: Marc

It seems to me that the whole glossy versus matte thing is really a question of personal preference. I worked in publishing for many years and in all that time, what I have found is that some people like the glossy screens and some don't. As long as the monitor is set up with a properly color corrected profile, many Art people I know actually prefer them except for those who loathe them.grin I love my glossy iMac and while these days I do more audio production then magazine production, the fact is that for me, glossy is just fine.

My $.02

Feb 05, 08 - 02:50 am Comment from: raman kandola

this would boost up the stock which has been heavily in discount for the past 3 weeks ~

Feb 05, 08 - 04:37 am Comment from: Richie_mofo

What the hell is the problem?? All these "professionals" are whining about glossy screens, but the two PRO lines (MacBook and Mac) both offer matte options!

If the "professionals" are trying to save money by buying a glossy screened consumer line, that's their problem.

For the record, I love my glossy MacBook (it just needs a clean!)

Feb 05, 08 - 08:27 am Comment from: Django

I love how the anti-glossy fanatics assume that you aren't doing 'real' work if you use a glossy. I'd MUCH rather use the glossy screen on my Macbook than the matte one on my old Powerbook, there's no comparison. Get a grip.

Feb 05, 08 - 08:38 am Comment from: Afib

A statistically sound randomized survey of "professional" users' preferences would settle this question....or maybe not.

Feb 05, 08 - 10:10 am Comment from: Pro

Pro photographer here.

What is going on is that those who prefer matte screens think that because they like it that way, everyone must like it that way. Even worse, they think those who don't like it their way are fools.

For goodness sakes, don't buy a computer with a glossy screen and then complain that it has a glossy screen.

So one Apple Store genius said it's the #1 complaint? Out of how many sold to happy customers? And how many of those complainers are sitting with their backs to the window?

Anyone else here hoping for SSD (Solid State Drives)?? From what I've read on the MBA, it's expensive, but a worthy feature add.

Feb 07, 08 - 12:55 am Comment from: LadySailor

I'm so excited about the new MacBook Pro - I was about ready to buy a new one last week when I heard about the rumor of an upgrade. So, I'm waiting.. not very patiently! I would like to weigh in on the matte versus glossy issue. I'm using a 5 year old PowerBook G4 gigahurtz machine with a matte screen. Yesterday a friend brought her MacBook over for me to help her get her email working. I am a graphic designer and website designer and do a LOT of photo work. Her screen was glossy and it was very disconcerting for me. I work in my farmhouse family room with a bay window behind me and the glare of the light was terrible. Worse yet was how dirty and icky the screen looked. I tried to clean it before I worked on the machine but it did not clean up well. When I get my new MBP I will most definitely get a matte screen. I actually am GLAD I read about this discussion, as it made me realize how important it is to get what I like best. Thanks y'all.

Feb 29, 08 - 02:19 pm Comment from: designer

if they release the imac next month without matte as an option, I'll be disappointed in Apple along with thousands of others,

if you want apple stock to go up, have them release matte screens for imacs
