RUMOR: Apple prepping new iMac, Mac mini for November 10 debut?  New Mac Pro in January?
Monday, November 03, 2008 - 12:16 PM EST

"A couple of our shadow dwellers from the land of Apple insist that Apple will break with tradition and we should expect an announcement of a new refresh of the Mac Pros at the Macworld Conference and Expo in January," David Stellmack reports for Fudzilla.

MacDailyNews Take: Fudzilla? Isn't that Mary's pet name for Rob?

Stellmack continues, "In another strange twist, we are also hearing that we will see a launch for a revamped and refreshed iMac and Mac Mini on November 10th."

"Still, we would think that this would normally be the other way around, with the iMac and Mac Mini being launched at the Macworld Conference and Expo in January, as these are clearly more consumer oriented; but persistent sources are telling us that Apple would like to cash in on some holiday sales, and the chips for the Mac Pros will not be available in sufficient quantity until January so they have to break with tradition," Stellmack reports.

New Mac mini with the new MacBook graphics card?
Make my HDTV happy, Apple!

Nov 03, 08 - 12:43 pm Comment from: MacintoshSoftwareList.com

I am hoping for the GPU that is used in the MacBook. People might actually buy the Mini if it is beefed up and the price reduced. The Mini is currently a total joke. If you look at the cost of the Mini plus the stuff you need to run it like Monitor Keyboard ect... it is the same price as the iMac.

Nov 03, 08 - 12:44 pm Comment from: Ted

I'm crossing my fingers for a new Mac mini with dual display support. It'd make me look like a hero if I could spec a sub-$1000 mini instead of a $2400 Mac Pro.

Hell, I'd consider one just to have at home.

Nov 03, 08 - 12:50 pm Comment from: Jeremy

This guy has no idea what he is talking about.

The MacPro announcements are not always at MacWorld, but they are always in January or February. The iMac announcements are almost always in November.

He basically says this is what will happen, but spins it as "highly unusual" or backwards from what we would expect???

Fail!

Nov 03, 08 - 12:59 pm Comment from: bizlaw

This supposed iMac/AppleTV announcement is only a "strange twist" if Apple doesn't want to boost Christmas sales.

Mac Pros are not a big Christmas item, iMacs and AppleTV are.

Nov 03, 08 - 01:00 pm Comment from: Lurker_PC

If Apple releases a revamped Mac Mini in time for Christmas, my Christmas shopping for my wife is done. She would love to get a new Mac as her original MacBook - which she uses more as a desktop - is her primary machine. Neither one of us wants an iMac as we both have nice, large, matte monitors already.

Given these economic times, makes sense for Apple to switch focus this year. Most non-Apple folks don't know to save their money until the January Sales Event!

Peace.

I had a dream this weekend that Apple will be releasing the new Mini with wireless keyboard/mouse. While it won't be as sweet and muscular as an imac, it will be competetive with low-end PCs. If they could just make an inexpensive 19" monitor w/isight for around three bills, and price the mini at 5-to-6 six bills, it would help. But sans the monitor, with decent specs and keyboard mouse, the Mini could do well.

And if it included the Apple TV software...

Or was a Apple TV/Mini hybrid...oh my oh my.

Looks too soon. Mac Mini needs a boost!

Nov 03, 08 - 01:12 pm Comment from: JMO

Apple will intro a new 20" model for $999, while leaving the existing 20" models at $1199 and $1499.

The Mac Pro needs a new case. C'mon Jony, let's see a new design!!

Nov 03, 08 - 01:22 pm Comment from: Cubert

It is a little unusual that this guy is pointing to a Monday release date.

Nov 03, 08 - 01:23 pm Comment from: Jeremy

@ The Great Microsoft Shiller Massacre

Why does the MacPro need a new case? It can't be made much smaller, and it sure won't be made bigger. In a pinch if the processors run cooler, you could shrink the fan assembly and thus make the whole thing ever so slightly smaller, but it's hardly "needed."

It would also be hard to think of a better way to access hard drives, memory, or any of the other bits.

Unibody Mac Mini with Updated graphics. Vid ports for old monitors and new display port. '

Of course, the haters will expect 17 HDMI ports, 6 USB 2.0, 32 PCI slots. All in the size of a deck of cards.

Nov 03, 08 - 01:29 pm Comment from: Set Top Mini

A revamped mini of some sorts with an HDMI out would be great.

I am, in Mossberg's words, part of the "small percentage of geeks" who have a computer connected to their TV. In this case, a mini. Audio and video have to go out separately.

A mini/apple TV hybrid would be swell. Something like an iPod touch. All the media you need with essentials like email, web, some apps, etc. Using the new video technology in the recently updates mac books would be great too.

Don't take firewire, though. ha ha ha.

Nov 03, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: KenC

Sure, why not a Mac Pro at MWSF09?

Steve can give a preview of Grandcentral and OpenCL and Snow Leopard, and how it'll make your new MacPro with 16 cores, and a gazillion GPU cores really fly,

Nov 03, 08 - 01:40 pm Comment from: Al

Roll over on your belly, honey, we're going to break with tradition.

Nov 03, 08 - 01:57 pm Comment from: rdbvideo

I'll bet if they do put a new case on the MacPros, it will be "glossy" only.
wink

Nov 03, 08 - 02:04 pm Comment from: Olmecmystic

@Nukeman:

You and I are on the same page. A 24" quad-core iMac running Snow Leopard would be killer. Upgrade the graphics with the nVidia chips that the Macbooks just got.

The speed is going to be the differentiator going forward. Vista/Windoze 7 is slowing down. Mac OS X and the iPhone OS are speeding up. Accelerate Safari using Webkit.

Competition? WHAT competition?

Peace.
Olmecmystic cool smile

@Jeremy

Exactly. The last Pros came out in January (I got one).

The case could be much smaller tho... look inside and it is a lot of extra space taken up by doors/covers etc. It could be more compact for sure. And those "handles"??? They are the dumbest design move ever (except the rounded ones on previous designs... those were awful)... who moves these things around that much?

New Mac mini! Hurray! I'm ordering it as soon as it is announced! Well, as long as it has 802.11n...

Nov 03, 08 - 04:25 pm Comment from: Russ

iMac unibody with 4core cpu and unibody graphics. Oh, make the case Black Chrome Nickle plated. "not enough O's in smooth" for that combo!!!!

That's a bigger yuck!

I'm waiting for a Mac Pro - my G5 just died on me - anyone else??

Nov 03, 08 - 06:34 pm Comment from: nobodi

"Or was a Apple TV/Mini hybrid...oh my oh my."

Even though I have no need for another Mac, I would buy one of these without a second thought. And I am far from wealthy.

I think this kind of Mac would be way more successful than the MacMini or the TV currently are.

Let me play my DVDs (blu-ray would be nice, but not necessary as I agree with Jobs "bag of hurt" comment), use iLife apps, surf the net and I'm fine.

That's all that's really needed, as no one in their right mind is going to try to run a business from a HTPC entertainment setup. Although some (like me grin ) just might try.

Nov 03, 08 - 06:36 pm Comment from: Growl

A Mac mini with DisplayPort, MagSafe (so you can use it with Apple's new Cinema Displays), and 802.11n would be nice.

It won't be unibody. There's no reason that a Mac mini, something you almost never physically touch, would need to be unibody.

It might be a little bit smaller than the current mini if they're ditching the giant DVI port for a mini DisplayPort. I would prefer an HDMI port though, since I use my mini connected to my HDTV and like that guy said above, I'd like audio and video to go out on the same cable. It looks like DisplayPort is another vido-only connection.

Nov 03, 08 - 06:45 pm Comment from: @jjjj

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a Unibody MacMini.

It's expensive (one online estimate from a person with CNC milling bkg, pegged the cost as adding $100 - $200 to a MacBook), and it's just really unnecessary to the type of computer that a MacMini represents. It's not a laptop and just doesn't require that kind of construction.
