RUMOR: Apple preps next-gen Apple iMacs for August 7th release
Wednesday, July 18, 2007 - 08:29 AM EST

"Reliable sources have zeroed in further on the release date for Apple's revamped iMac since our last report, pointing to an announcement on August 7," Think Secret reports.

Full article - also with iWork rumors - here.

MacDailyNews Note: This report tracks closely with other iMac rumors we've read and heard: 20- and 24-inch models, no 17-inch, more vertical symmetry with screen placement (no large blank space at the bottom of the screen as with today's models), and topping out with a 2.4GHz Santa Rosa processor. The new iMacs sound like they will be a significant upgrade of an already excellent, highly-regarded desktop.

[UPDATE: 9:15am EDT: Fixed link to correct Think Secret article.]

Turn your iPhone on its side, stretch it out to 24 inches, add a foot. There's your new iMac.

"Turn your iPhone on its side, stretch it out to 24 inches, add a foot. There's your new iMac."

Add a foot, the last thing a computer needs is a foot. That would make me hopping mad. Ha ha ha... (slow day at work...)

9to5Mac (http://9to5mac.com/August-Aug-7-seventh-iMacs-Apple-Event-ipod-ipod-micro-nano-3450897543)
also is reporting the Aug. 7 date for new, redesigned iMacs, and in addition, they think it will bring redesigned video iPods.
The site also says, contrary to Think Secret and others, that Apple will keep the 17-inch model.
If that size is a big seller for the educational market, it seems to me it would be an odd choice for Apple to discontinue it.

Jul 18, 07 - 08:27 am Comment from: Jake

Apple would be crazy to get rid of the 17 inch iMac. Why limit choice when plenty of people find that's all they need?

Jul 18, 07 - 08:34 am Comment from: No Squirt For You

"How does saying something many times makes it more factual?"

It works for MS with their sales and marketshare numbers. I hear ad nauseum that they have 87, 89, 90, 95, and 99 per cent of the personal computer, business computer, server, mobile OS, internet browser and business software markets. Who needs facts?

I would have to say this is a case of "too little too late" for Apple. Have you seen Dell's new laptops? Who's gonna want one of these vaporware rumored iMac toys when Dell has already taken the lead and can ship today a stylish and powerful computing solution? Did I mention you can choose from 8 colors? And they run Vista which is better than whatever OS they put on MACS these days?

Nice try, Apple. Dell is about choice, like the 8 great colors to choose from and all the great flavors of magnificent Vista. Hey Cupertino, how does it feel to follow a trailblazer? I bet you never even thought about different colors for a product line. Dorks. What are you MAC lemmings gonna do when you find out the new MAC will only be available in 1 color?

Your potential. Our passion.™

(July 27, 1999)
"At Microsoft's annual gathering of financial analysts in Seattle last week, company chief Bill Gates took a swipe at Apple's multicolored iMac packaging strategy in the course of a discussion of various Intel-based devices.

'The one thing Apple's providing now is leadership in colors,' Gates said as he pointed out a red-colored Intel-based personal computer on display. "It won't take long for us to catch up with that, I don't think."

@ZuneTang

too bad those wonderful flavors of vista are underpowered, bloated, expensive, thier microsoft products too (need one say more?). oh yeah, did you write your post on vista? if so, how many times did you have to tell UAC that you DID want to post on this website? =( too bad UAC is pretty much worthless. =(

mac hardware makes dell laptops look like biege boxes splattered with paint and plastic. =D

Your frustration. Our fault.™

The rumor is that we'll be purchasing this particular iMac if and as soon as Ars Technica gives it a good review. I'm hoping we get the 24 inch ...

At last. heh

Zzzzzz...wake me when you develop a real sense of humour...

Colour... to copy Apple's VERY old iBooks (is it 9 years now?)...but only a coloured lid, copying Sony...

Because both Dell and Sony are too cheap-ass to colour the whole thing...how REALLY tacky and embarrassing!

Going back to sleep now. Wake me again when there's some REAL news.

screw iMacs. What a waste of money. non-upgradeable POSs.

Where are the real Macintoshes? They're gone. Mac Pro's are too expensive for the average power-user. iMacs are for web surfing and little kids. Notebooks are for coffee shops. There is no Macintosh.

Totally agree. Many home users simply don't want a big thing on their desks. Many small businesses use Macs in areas where space is at a premium. Not to mention schools...

IMHO, dropping the 17-inch iMac would be one of Apple's dumbest decisions ever.

I wouldn't call the iMac a "POS", but it is night the Mac I need these days either. I am hoping that Apple reintroduces a headless Mac that fills the gap between the mini and the Pro models.

@zune tang
MAC in all caps.... nice touch. A subtle irritant to all Mac lovers. LOL.

Couple of things:

1. This "zune tang" is horrible. He's not the same guy who wrote on and on about the zune some months ago. That guy was smart and knew all the right buttons to push. This guys is an idiot posing as the real Zune Tang. Dude, you're not good at it.

Sorry I'm calling BS.

2. On a different note. Where are all the guys yelling, "boohoo! A new iMac is going to cannibalize iPhone sales. iPhone! iPhone!"?

Jul 18, 07 - 10:16 am Comment from: Poisened Tang

Whenever I read that Zune dufus' name on the heading of a post I move along.

Nothing worth reading.

I suggest we all just ignore the troll and enjoy OUR Mac site.

After all, he IS a Micros**t victim.

Jul 18, 07 - 10:28 am Comment from: mike

God I hope this rumor is true about the iMac.

Been waiting a long time to upgrade my G4 desklamp. Was waiting for Leopard, but at this point I don't care, I just need a new machine. I'll upgrade the OS later.

I also think when it does come out it will be similar to an iPhone turned on its side, possibly with a multi-touch mouse for use in things like coverflow, which we'll probably see more of in the new iLife apps and eventually Leopard.

Jul 18, 07 - 10:31 am Comment from: me

I only say iMacs are Pieces because they are not upgradeable. Now that the Mac is back I'm considering switching to the god awful XP because I can't afford the computer I need in Apple Land.

This is ridiculous. Why can't I buy a headless Mac? Going with Intel should have produced a line of Macs that was powerful AND affordable. I would not even consider an iMac. iMacs are for your parents and kids. If Apple doesn't put a non-Xeon in a tower soon...

Jul 18, 07 - 10:49 am Comment from: Shiva

@zerO
Repetition is used in all great propaganda. Examples are Iraq and Leni Riefenstahl and Josef Goebels. It has been used as a tool for centuries. If you repeat a lie especially large one enough times, it becomes the truth in many minds.

As far as the iMacs being POSs - I can't wait to get REAL computers because the conservative 20% increase in revenue we have obtained in business every year over the last 3 years using POSs seems pretty good. The ease of use translated into time/money savings has been well worth it. Please let me know what computers would help us get say more than 20% revenue increase because I'm switching.

Jul 18, 07 - 11:04 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

I fell for the "upgradable" line for years, buying a series of towers that, in hindsight, I really never upgraded that much. $800 for a new processor? $400 for a new video card? I could spend a little more and get a new machine with a faster bus and other new technologies that you just can't upgrade. I could spend big money on a tower and big money upgrading it, or just buy a new iMac a little more often. Works for me, especially since the iMacs enabled Extended Desktop with a second monitor. To each her own, I guess.

thats the most hilarious word in the world.... Microsh*t and Thier New 4 Years Behind Product Winblows Vista! =D

Jul 18, 07 - 11:10 am Comment from: Walter Chillum

I really hope Apple makes the disc eject system sturdier than on my G5 iMac. After about a year cds popped out and I had to catch them in my hand instead coming out half-way. After about two years the dvds did the same thing. It's just a bit of an irritation that the slot system just could have been more robust. Am I the only one experiencing this irritant?

Having made the point I'm really waiting for the new model release. It's just I'll have to wait until December (when my classes have finished) to purchase a 20 inch model.

Jul 18, 07 - 11:39 am Comment from: jay

I second ChrissyOne's opinion. Back when I was building my Doze boxes, I don't think I ever added anything but a hard drive or two, and one time I replaced a CD drive with a DVD drive and a video card.

I never upgraded the CPU or memory because the motherboards were always obsolete in 6-12 months, max. It was just easier to build a new bleeding edge box from scratch.

Now, of course, having learned the virtues of Apple and OS X, I would never return to the Dark Side.

Jul 18, 07 - 12:26 pm Comment from: me

ChrissyOne, obviously you're not paying attention to PC component costs. Even a quad core Q6600 2.4GHZ costs $430 before the July 22 price cuts. And a nVidia 8600 GT is < $150.

7300GT. Every PC user laughs at a $2500 computer with a $75 video card.

Jay, even if you never upgraded your tower you could still build another PC for half the cost of buying that Mac Pro.

I know that Macs have better resale value. And Windows SUX.

But I can't rationalize spending $3,000 on a home computer. Apple please help.

Jul 18, 07 - 04:16 pm Comment from: Gman

regarding 'iMacs are POS'..

here's my situation:

24" iMac Core Duo 2 2.6Ghz 750GB HD,2.5Gb memory, 256mb video, bluetooth, wifi, Firewire 400/800, USB 2, Digital Audio I/O, built in iSight, DVD dual layer, built in speakers.......attached I have a 23" HD display for screen span.

I produce on average 20 to 25 videos a month.
I shoot on average 1000 to 2000 photos a month.
I am Pro certified in Motion, Final Cut, Soundtrack, DVD Studio Pro...and they work FLAWLESSLY.

! am a heavy Adobe app user.

my point is ...only die hard geeks who don't know SHIAT, need the "upgradability"...I upgraded my machine the day I bought it. And as the forseeable future can tell, I won't need anything else...My iMac is a Pro kick ass machine.

god, I hate when people spew FUD.

Jul 18, 07 - 04:18 pm Comment from: Gman

oh yea, before I came over to the Mac side..my computer was a boxed PEECEE..that I put together....except the POS never worked quite right, I was always missing some driver...so you know, since I am a very busy producer, I have ZERO time to sit and ponder why the "firewire card" didn't work...

Jul 18, 07 - 05:16 pm Comment from: Gman

that was fast!

wink

Jul 19, 07 - 05:52 am Comment from: @ Gman

@ Gman

What kinda videos do you produce. I'm a video fanatic currently working on a PC and Premiere but I'm hoping to exit the dark side soon. I had a Mac way back in the days (Mac IIsi 3MB RAM 40MB HDD). I long to get my hands on Final Cut Pro and perhaps an iMac or MacBook Pro.

Dreams............. they do come true grin
