RUMOR: Apple to debut tablet-based Multi-Touch™ device for under $700
Thursday, May 21, 2009 - 09:53 AM EDT

"With a conventional netbook clearly out of the question, researchers for Piper Jaffray said Thursday there's mounting evidence to suggest Apple next year will introduce its own take on the market in the form of a tablet-based device that will sell for $700 or less," Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.

"'Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from [chief operating officer] Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple's acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise,' analyst Gene Munster and his team wrote in lengthy research note to clients," Marsal reports.

"More specifically, the analyst said these investments will likely culminate with the launch of a touch-screen tablet with a display somewhere between 7- and 10-inches at a special event sometime in the first half of 2010," Marsal reports. "Such a move, he added, would be consistent with management's comments that Cupertino-based company has no interest in catering to the existing segment for 'cheap' miniaturized notebooks and its spoken desire to differentiate in a market currently dominated by cramped computers with razor thin margins and a subpar user experience."

"'The device's OS could bear a close resemblance to Apple's iPhone OS and run App Store apps,' the analyst wrote. 'Apple could possibly introduce a second screen resolution into the iPhone OS software development kit (SDK), enabling developers to build apps specifically for the larger tablet device,'" Marsal reports. "Alternatively, Munster said Apple may be working on a customized version of Mac OS X for traditional computers that would be optimized for its multi-touch platform. Such an effort would be extensive and time consuming, even if it's already underway, and therefore the analyst believes it may not be ready for consumption until sometime next year."

MacDailyNews Take: This jibes very nicely with what we've been hearing since as far back as last July:

Get ready for Newton 2.0 MacBook touch?!

So says our source — the same one who tipped us to wireless iTunes Store sales direct to iPod, iPhone a week before Apple debuted it — in staccato fashion:

"Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion's haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at 'low' price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest."
- July 22, 2008

And from earlier this year:

To this day our source adamantly insists that it's coming, regardless of what Apple actually names the shipping units, and adds that the SuperDrive will not be part of the finished devices, "It was just in some of the prototypes for various reason(s)." - March 10, 2009

If something like this is released, I will be buying them for my massage students.

"If something like this is released, I will be buying them for my massage students."

Well, it is multi-touch. I could see an app for that now. 'iGroan'

May 21, 09 - 10:30 am Comment from: eddy

its just a larger size ipod touch. don't get too excited

May 21, 09 - 10:33 am Comment from: Roger

I sure wish we could see this device long before next year! Come on, Apple! Quit trying to be such a perfectionist!!

May 21, 09 - 10:37 am Comment from: DogGone

2010? That's a long way off.

Apple will probably release a slew of new products by then.

Good idea for massage training. It would certainly cut down on the cost of hiring bodies for massages. Dare I say it though, a 10 inch screen isn't much to work on. This could be the only really useful application for M$'s big ass table although it would be a tad more expensive to implement.

May 21, 09 - 10:37 am Comment from: Some Dude

Betcha they call it the iBook. It always felt weird to me that Apple just dumped the iBook moniker to replace it with the MacBook name. The name iTablet doesn't sound right. It's the perfect thing for the market between the iPhone and the laptop line. I foresee it having a 7 inch screen and a mini-USB or iPod type connector for accessories like flash drives or burners. You heard it here first.

May 21, 09 - 10:38 am Comment from: Jamie

I'm in the middle of buying our 1st house, but if this comes out I will 100% definitely be buying one.

My Goodness, I think I've just come.

May 21, 09 - 10:40 am Comment from: Erk

@ Some Dude

I think you hit the nail on the head, iBook fits perfectly, always wondered why they went away from that

May 21, 09 - 10:43 am Comment from: blah blah blah...

How many times have heard these rumors only to be let down, as far as the timing? Too many. Don't get your hopes up on this one. and don't expect Leopard or snow leopard to be on this thing if it's $700 just expect OSX mobile like on the iPhone and touch, these would cannibalize the entry level macbook if it was a full blown version. We know apple is working a bigger touchscreen device, it would be senseless and stupid and ignorant of them not to develop one since they basically have the single best OS for making it work, just tired of hearing about a tablet or some kind of "netbook". lets hear more rumors on AppleTV, that is far more interesting than the over drawn out tablet rumor. There is far more promise in AppleTV than just another touchscreen running the same software we already have. More ATV news please on how it can be a gaming system, safari, DVR, hulu to give option whether to deal with commercials or just buy from iTunes.

"jives", not "jibes".

May 21, 09 - 10:55 am Comment from: Gramma

Jibes is correct. It means 'to agree with'.

May 21, 09 - 10:56 am Comment from: BacMook

Can we let the Newton rest in peace? The iPhone and iPod touch are superior to any version of the Newton or eMate that I ever used.

Let's move forward.

May 21, 09 - 10:59 am Comment from: Kevin J. Weise

I love Apple, and this device sounds *very* desirable. And I will need to replace my 15" AlBook in the reasonably soon future. However, it sounds so new and unique, that I think it is going to fall into my general rule of "don't buy version 1.0 of anything." I wonder if I'll be able to control my technolust?

May 21, 09 - 11:04 am Comment from: Follower

iBook ... or PowerBook ...?

May 21, 09 - 11:08 am Comment from: Demon

Repeating the same old rumors over and over doesn't mean that they'll come true. But, it make great evidence that your sucker.
People who are believing analyst and/or the so called media types these days are in the position to have their investment lost or stolen from them.

May 21, 09 - 11:10 am Comment from: PoorGuy

If Apple chains this iTablet to ATT like they did the iPhone, they can count me out.

$500+ ($65 a month x 24 month contract) = screw that!!

$500 + free wifi skype = much better

May 21, 09 - 11:16 am Comment from: bjh

@gramma : Even Homer nods. Referring to my OED confirms that the North American usage of "jibe" is "to agree with".
Outside of the US, "jibe" is a variant of "gibe", meaning "to sneer" or "to scoff".

May 21, 09 - 11:16 am Comment from: TheMacAdvocate

This won't be an 8" iPod touch or an 8" OS X tablet. It will take borrow elements of both - for hardware and software. Apple has always leveraged new form factors with customized OSs. They did it with the clickwheel iPod and the iPhone.

Expect innovative use of touch to manipulate the environment and enter text. Ink was the beginning. Prepare for the Revenge of Newton! wink

May 21, 09 - 11:17 am Comment from: Olternaut

Ya know MDN sometimes you guys annoy the living hell out of me!
I love it when you play a headline to put Apple in the best possible light. The main issue on the story is the friggin price but the fact they said 2 0 1 0 for a release. As in next year. As in why the hell isn't it coming out this year???
Geezus MDN!!!

May 21, 09 - 11:35 am Comment from: Twenty Benson

Hmmm. I think this thing will be bendy - 10 degrees each way from flat - tactile, a bit like a... book. White rubberised shell with an 10" oled screen - all the way up to the edges (no rim). No superdrive, no imputs, no output at all - just power jack socket - and as tough as old boots. It'll run Snow Leopard with a multitouch widgets layer - think having 10 virtual, resizable, iPhones, floating on the screen... one containing the Mac interface.

Which word is more explanatory? B-O-G-U-S, B-U-L-L, or A-I-N-T G-O-N-N-A H-A-P-P-E-N ?

Hit hungry, that's all.

May 21, 09 - 11:52 am Comment from: currentinterest

Oaky, so what are they using all those 10" touch screens for they reportedly ordered recently? I doubt they would place such an order for a product to be delivered in 2010.

May 21, 09 - 12:03 pm Comment from: Macdoc

I don't want to wait a year, and thats what I want is a little larger iPod Touch! But I want it to run iPhone/iPod Touch Apps and mac OS 10.5/.6 software.

Everyone at Apple has said repeatedly that they are very excited about forthcoming "exciting new products" in this year's pipeline.

We will see more than a new iPhone...

May 21, 09 - 12:19 pm Comment from: Ogre

If nothing else, please be suspect of this assertion:
"Slot-loading SuperDrive."

Apple has already done away with the drive on the MacBook Air, why would they include it on a lower end, even more portable device - especially now that they've proven the effectiveness of the iTunes App Store as a content/application delivery platform..????

Think (different) people.

May 21, 09 - 12:32 pm Comment from: HD Boy

Apple probably will have to do a 7-inch, iPhone/iPod tablet device at some point, or perhaps a 7-inch vehicle dock for the iPhone/iPod Touch. This is the standard (ISO 7736) screen size for double-DIN (180 x 100 mm) media playing 'head units' in vehicles (4" x 7"). Single DIN head units are 180 x 50 mm (2" x 7"). Unfortunately, the depth is not standardized, and occasionally, people run into problems trying to install modern head units in older vehicles that have shallow dashboards.

Still, if I ran Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, Delphi, etc., I'd be watching the rear-view mirror.

This sounds like something Apple might actually make. A conventional netbook would be too 'blah'. Aping the markets newest fads just isn't what Apple does.

May 21, 09 - 01:07 pm Comment from: flowley

uh, isn't this taken from this article that came out a couple months ago:

http://www.derekunderwood.com/general-computer/details-regarding-new-apple-touch-netbook/

what is new about this info? seems like absolutely nothing

May 21, 09 - 02:17 pm Comment from: KingMel

"' 'Apple could possibly introduce a second screen resolution into the iPhone OS software development kit (SDK), enabling developers to build apps specifically for the larger tablet device...' "

It was my understanding that Apple's objective is for App Store products to be display/resolution independent. I would hate to see the apps segregated by screen size/resolution, but I suppose that it could work.

May 21, 09 - 03:33 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

@KingMel.

You're right. I read that the iPhone/touch OS ALREADY supports other screen resolutions. It's not tied to 480 x 320.
This is Apple, not Palm!

May 21, 09 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Essence

It sounds cool and all, but what is the target market for these things supposed to be? Can someone please tell me what you would use this for, that the air and the iPhone/Touch don't already cover?

May 21, 09 - 06:32 pm Comment from: KingMel

@Herbal Essence wink
I have used several apps on the iPod touch that would benefit from additional display real estate, especially if your vision is that of a 40+ year old and not a youngster. The eBook application is a good example - you would like to have more text of a reasonable size on the screen without having to flip pages too often. Touch controls could be enlarged for some applications, and 'instruments' such as GPS location or a magnetometer compass could be kept on the 'desktop' and still leave display space for an app. You could iChat with multiple people and keep their pictures up at the same time. I suspect that many business apps could also benefit.

There are likely a few display size 'sweet spots.' The current iPhone/iPod touch display size appears to be a good compromise between portability and utility. And the 13.3" to 15.4" laptop displays have their advantages. But the popularity of netbooks indicates to me that there is likely at least one display scale between the iPhone and the MacBook that offers an appealing combination of portability, battery life, and utility. You could browse the internet comfortably, write emails, take and edit photos, use GPS navigation, read books or watch movies during car trips, etc., with one device that is easily transportable from place to place and ultimately a lot more affordable and useful than several separate devices (although targeted, single function devices like the iPod would still be quite popular for obvious reasons).
