“Apple has picked up rights to air a Super Bowl commercial on February 4. The rumor is that they’ll use that commercial to announce an three-month exclusive deal to electronically distribute some Beatles music via the iTunes Store,” Blackfriars’ Communications’ Carl Howe writes for SeekingAlpha.
Howe asks, “Now wearing my marketing hat, this raises a question: Does this ad buy make sense from an ROI point of view?”
Howe does the math and decides that there might “be more in an Apple Super Bowl ad than just the Beatles announcement.”
Howe writes, “Assuming it was able to negotiate the rights, Apple will probably announce a Beatles-themed iPod to bundle with the Beatles music, just as it did with the U2 iPods. And given that Apple just talked down iPod projections for the first quarter, that would be a smart way to boost sales during this traditionally slow period — and again surpass analyst projections.”
Howe wonders if even something like that is big enough for a Super Bowl ad, “A Beatles iPod that had all the sexy wide-screen and touch-screen goodness of an iPhone without the phone functions would certainly fit that bill, but I don’t think Apple would be willing to confuse the market quite this soon after the iPhone introduction. Regardless, my bet is that the Super Bowl ad is about more than just adding the Beatles catalog to iTunes.”

Techpwn.com also is reporting that Apple might announce a touchscreen, widescreen iPod during the Super Bowl here.
[UPDATE: This article (originally posted January 19th) is being brought to the top as the Super Bowl nears kickoff.]

Report: Apple to announce iTunes Store deal with The Beatles via Super Bowl commercial – January 17, 2007
What a coup for Apple, Inc., to announce a Beatles iPod with all that rich musical goodness coupled with the slick touch-screen interface!
…he ponders as he wipes drool from his chin…
the touchscreen ipod (iphone form factor) is a no brainer. And of all the software on the iphone, the ipod stuff was the most complete.
this wouldnt be that hard a task, no fcc needed
But, and here’s the really important questions, what color would it be?
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
The supper bowl? So Apple thinks everybody eats soup and watches TV at the same time?
Maybe when I eat chili, but never with soup.
This is another lame idea from Apple…
Widescreen Internet iPod WiFi touch-screen.
Say no more, say no more.
Hmmm…an iPhone without the phone. It wouldn’t need OS X taking up valuable storage space. Maybe one could get a version with a hard drive if its really for video.
iPod does need a refresh so it doesn’t pale in comparison to the iPhone…
I think the Superbowl ad will be about the iPhone and that’s it.
This could be a huge boost to iPod sales…
I don’t think it’ll happen. It’s just too soon after the iPhone announcement, and then what would Apple do for an encore come the holidays?
Color it Yellow Submarine.
They scrapped the idea for a Heather Mills iPod. It was a cheap model, stripped down, VERY expensive and it didn’t have a leg to stand on.
MW: wrong. I know. So very wrong.
I might have to actually watch the Superbowl this year.
That would make sense if Apple doesn’t want sales of the vPod to ‘dry up’ upon speculation of a phone-less iPhone.
This isn’t even a rumor. It’s speculation.
Apple won’t introduce the widescreen iPod until next holiday season..
Remember, they have to be able to sell more than 21 million iPods next Christmas.
To follow up during the holidays, they will come out with new Nano’s and different iPhone models. That’s a good way to follow a touch screen iPod in Feb.
But it’d piss of about 21 million people.
And to top that quarter next holiday season, they will lump iPhone and iPod sales in one.
That would be absolutely brilliant on Apple’s part. So many people would jump to buying a new wide-screen iPod that shared some tech with the iPhone, because they would still buy the iPhone in June for the phone and web functionality. Brilliant! Let’s hope…
Maybe they are using the Superbowl to advertise the iPhone.
Yes, tech geeks and Apple fans have seen the iPhone … but what about the wider world?
I don’t think you’ll see new versions of anything until Leopard (release is a vague date of Spring ’07) is GM for functional reasons.
The Super Bowl could be a sneak preview of Leopard to steal attention from Fista.
Or the Super Bowl ad could be Mac and PC playing a game of multi-touch football. Let’s hope PC isn’t “skins”.
I’m just glad that Apple is now a standard advertiser during the Super Bowl.
And honestly, I’d love to see them show a new Mac vs PC ad there!
Apple won’t introduce the widescreen iPod until next holiday season..
Remember, they have to be able to sell more than 21 million iPods next Christmas.
I agree. Plus, if the iPhone is the only product to use the widescreen touchscreen (WSTS) for four or five months (prior to the holiday shopping season), that’ll help its sales get off to a healthy start. If there’s a WSTS iPod out in February, I’d buy one immediately… but then be a little more inclined to wait on the iPhone. OK, I probably wouldn’t, but the thought would cross my mind, and more casual Apple fans might wait.
That was a low blow, Amp…. Unsquirted… but funny nonetheless.
Hmmm…. This does tie in well with something I thought was a little odd in the keynote. Go to the keynote stream and jump forward to about 42:48 and watch.
Things I thought were odd:
– I wonder why he chooses the Beatles after the Apple vs Apple battle a few months back.
– “A little help for my friends”, hmmm indeed Steve, indeed.
– “Thats a 5 star album”, a little bit of ass kissing there? (okay, I agree sgt peppers is a 5*)
I would love to see the Beatles on iTunes, and I would love an Beatles iPod.
Maybe Sneak preview of Leopard plus offical release date. That would reach a lot of people and show the general public Leopard and compared to Vista.
If done right (which will probably be the case) it could also be one of the best commericals. Maybe two different commericals, one for the Beatles, and one for Leopard.
I personally don’t think Apple will release a touch-screen wide-screen iPod until after the release of iPhone. Afterall, the iPhone is supposed to be the best iPod Apple ever made. If iPhone is released in June, about August would be the most reasonable time.
the only way Beatles would agree to an exclusive: Beatles iPod – not just any iPod – a beatles iPod – limited edition!!! (only 5 mm).
Great way to give public a taste of what touchscreen is all about.
About the only things Apple can release pre-Leopard/iPhone are new Macs with a 10.4.9 Tiger update. And TV. And hopefully, MUCH more movie content on the iTS. ~200 movies is still pretty paltry especially since The Hot Chick, Ernest Saves Christmas and The Ladykillers are in that list.
Does anyone at Apple have any music taste…U2 and now maybe a Beatles iPOD…..WTF…..I would still like to see the numbers on how many U2 iPODs sold….now a Stones iPOD that would sell…..
why spend millions promoting Beatles – won’t increase iPod sales only iTunes.
try new macs!!
“But, and here’s the really important questions, what color would it be?”
Pshychadelic rainbow colors. And remember Apple has a patent on a color-changing case design too.
Sorry, wasn’t “supper bowl” after all.Hah!
Bymad.
But “super bowel” doesn’t make any sense either. Who has TV in the outhouse? Maybe a combo iPod/Sears catalog holder, but a TV?
I wonder if that would include Beatles movies and music videos as well?
“3-month” exclusive? Is he on crack? 1-year, 2-years, 5-years, those are exclusive numbers.
As long as it is not a new lame Mac & PC guy! OMG those are lame commercials. This would be a great thing for Apple Inc. They need to move away from the Steve Jobs Keynote thing. Yes he needs to be involved with stuff but Apple needs to start something new when rolling out new products. Just shock everyone with a great TV spot. Steve rocks but time for a new approach.

Steve showed us the touch screen iPhone, next perhaps a touch screen iMac???
or MacBook??? or etc.???
Fun to speculate!!! But…?
iPod video will not be released until after the iPhone.
@ TowerTone:
Zune will be advertised heavily during the “Super Bowel.”
Your potential. Our porcelain.
Beatles, Schmeatles… I want a Pierre Boulez iPod!
Yeah, I wanna see an ad with some air conducting to Mahler or Varese or Bartók or Shostakovich or Ligeti…
There were quite a few Beatles sightings during the keynote… Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road album covers… and a few songs, too.
At the fortune 30 company I worked at, they wanted total quantity of impressions for advertising buys and NOTHING matches the Super Bowl for total eyeballs. Even at the high total cost of a Super Bowl ad, it’s worth it when you look at the cost per impression made, which is actually quite reasonable.
Maybe a Beatles iPod would come pre-loaded with the music catalog and all their movies.
song that comes with Heather McCartney iPod: “my mama told me, you better hop around.”
I want a “Dixie Chicks” iPod.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Yeh right , and they are sending cats to the moon!!
honestly, i can hardly imagine that they would come out with a video Ipod that would confuse consumer and deplete people that might want to purchase the Iphone, not a good strategy,
you never introduce low end first , always the high end and that’s what Apple always did, so did BMW.
I hope Yoko Ono is in the ad…..
No, this opinion makes zero sense.
1. Apple has no iPhone to sell, so if the message is now all about a touch-iPod, that Apple can sell now, then so be it.
2. iPod video sales are surely slowing to a crawl, now that consumers are asking the question “when will an iPod video show up that has the iPhone functionality in it!?”
Apple cannot afford to wait too long in launching an iPod HD…
… oh, I’m sorry, did I say iPod HD? Yes, the iPod HD will arrive but let us think about this ad space for a minute.
A. Steve will launch the iPod HD at a Special Event, not in a 30 second commercial.
B. The Beattles on an iPod and an exclusive is more than enough for a SuperBowl ad, when considering how much publicity and clout it delivers Apple.
But what if Apple uses the spot to do an amazing iPhone ad and really get some 60 million US viewers completely jazzed about this device? Five months before it arrives, but just another 5 months of grief for other providers and cell phone makers…
Worse yet, what is Apple does an iPhone add, and then pulls the launch early game and delivers the device with Cingular in late April, cashing in on the publicity and starting a scrable to the product, screwing up other cell maker and carrier counter-launches…
Those predicting that a widescreen iPod will not be released until after the iPhone seem to not understand that the iPhone makes the current iPod look kind of lame and dated, by comparison. I would imagine that it’s already having a negative impact on iPod sales. I don’t know if we will see a new iPod by the Superbowl, but I think it’s entirely reasonable we could see one by spring. Mind you, I could be wrong in either direction. But hey, at least I’m not stating something to be a fact. People who just come out and say, “The viPod won’t be released until after the iPhone” as if they actually know this for a fact are awfully annoying. None of us know anything about what they’re going to do, or when they’re going to do it, and to pretend otherwise is ridiculous.
Bwaaaagh!!
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/19/universal-and-sony-prohibit-zune-sharing-for-certain-artists/
I agree–I doubt you’ll see the iPod multi-touch until after the iPhone is released. After all, why sell it for $399 when you can get people to pay $499 or $599 for it? Milk the early-adopters for all they’re worth.
Heck, Apple did a superbowl ad in 2000 talking about being Y2K compliant. I would have no problem believing that Apple will do a superbowl ad featuring Beatles content in the iTunes Store and a 5.5Gen Beatles iPod.
Oh, I almost forgot: GO PATS!
SUPERBOWL IPOD = LOCKED IPHONE TO BE TURNED ON IN JULY
why wait to sell expensive hardware? Since the hardware’s probably already decided, just sell it as an iPod with the iPhone software and firmware turned off. Then in August make the update available and activate the phone part!
You heard it here first!

Has MDN installed something that boots a post if they mention certain posters? I was making a fun/positive comment about someone and the post got swallowed. Hm…
You gut the iPhone 5 months before it ever hits the market if they do that.
A touch-screen iPod won’t need all of the extra features of an iPhone (voicemail, Google maps, e-mail, etc.). Thus, more room is available for storage space, so Apple could use the same screen and navigation in essentially the same form factor, but offer significantly more GBs w/o the hard drive.
It wouldn’t cannibalize iPhone sales, because the iPod wouldn’t have all of the PIM and other features of the phone (and, of course, can’t make phone calls or take pics).
Do people really think that Apple will let the full sized iPod stagnate until after June?
People who want a phone will buy the iPhone when it comes out irrespective of whether a comparable iPod is on the market because … they want something that makes phone calls! No one who wants a full-screen iPod will buy the iPhone just to use it as an iPod since the capacity is too small for everyday use … as a video iPod.
There is very little overlap between the full sized iPod market and the iPhone market. There is overlap between the nano market and the iPhone market. Release the damn full-sized video iPod in 100 GB at $400 or $450 and get it over with. Call it iPod video to differentiate it from the regular iPod line, and then eventually merge the two (anyone remember iPod photo?).
/what the hell is up with Page 2?
//i could venture a guess …
give the consumer a little more credit. iPhone made news.. people know about it.
I think they are going to advertise a Beatles iPod with the iPhone form factor and some of its UI goodness. iPods w/ video are due for an overhaul.
100 gigs for 399.00, Beatles edition, 80 gigs for 399.00…
we shall see.
Why not a widescreen iPod? It could feature a larger HD (to make up for the lack of phone capabilities), but still include some of the features of the iPhone like calendar (iCal) and contact (AddressBook) synchronization. This would appeal to the people who don’t want/need a new phone, but want some of the features of the new iPhone. And it would take direct aim at Palm who has been spotty as of late in their Mac support. It could be what the Newton was envisioned to be.
As for the commercial, I think it’s mainly a Beatles announcement — I’ve heard that the remastered UK catalog CDs are being released in the US sometime around June…so why not say, “Why wait? Get them now!”
Even wikipedia refers to the colors of the Zune:
The device is available in three colors and features what Microsoft calls the “doubleshot” effect, with a translucent glow in a different color. The colors of mainstream availability are light black, poop brown, and pearl white with a doubleshot of blue, green, and clear respectively.
“Poop brown” How rich! How many chairs will Ballmer/Monkeyboy destroy before the madness ends?!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zune
Congrats to MDN for figuring out how to get more add revenue. And as Paul Harvey would say, “page TWO”.
Does this ad buy make sense from an ROI point of view?
It did in 1984. A single ad, a breakthrough new product, a daring one-time shot (just like the hammer through the screen). And the rest is history. 😀
For those who doubt: Perhaps it’d be better if Apple dumped several years and billions of dollars into shoring up a crumbling foundation product, as did certain other OS vendors?
I just hope that Apple knows their audience, and makes the best of the priciest air time available.
RUMOR: Microsoft to launch wipescreen anal-touch Zune via Toilet Bowl ad.
Now that the iPhone has been shown, iPod video sales are dying on a vine. Eveyone now wants a touch-screen iPod like the iPhone has, so Apple cannot wait any longer to launch the new iPod video (AKA iPod HD).
iPod HD specs:
– 4″ touch-screen (yes, slightly larger screen width than the iPhone, but overall, a bit shorter, as there is no home button or mic, speaker or sensors or ear piece on the top or bottom).
– 4 or 6 hours of video battery life.
– wifi
– Holds and plays back to a TV 720p (screen is not quite to that res, but looks incredible none-the-less)
Price:
$299 = 40 GB
$399 – 100 GB
Apple will also launch another movie partner, 20th Century Fox, and have an exclusive Star Wars deal, in HD (720p) via iTunes.
Other titles from Disney, Paramount and 20th Century will also be available in HD.
Here is perhaps the biggest deal of the entire Special Event:
AppleTV will connect directly to “iTunes in the sky.” More precisely, AppleTV connects to iTunes movies store, for purchase or RENTAL!
Rental Pricing:
$3.99 Stnd Def
$5.99 HD
Purchase Pricing:
$14.99 New Release
$19.99 New Release HD
–
$9.99 Current Library
$14.99 Current Library HD
Here is another kicker – If one rents a movie – at the end, Apple will offer the choice to purchase the movie minus the cost of the rental fee!
Apple is not dumb here. The cost to download is not cheap, thus, if they can get a movie to be rented and purchased via one download – all the better.

I want a “Dixie Chicks” iPod.
The same Chicks who went out of their way to insult and alienate their own fans? (I don’t mean the Bush incident either, there have been other stupid spout-offs)
The same Chicks who now wonder why they can’t sell songs, fill concert seats, or get air play?
Maybe there’ll be a Dixie Chicks Zune.
Yes, Dixie Chicks Zune would be sweet!
That reminds me of a song by Little Defeet
“If you’ll be my Dixie Chicks then
I’ll be your Tennesse Gore
Then I’ll have three time mo fun
Than Clinton had before”
Maybe a yellow Zune?

Just to come back on some of the comments made,
the basic rule of marketing is you put high end product first and then you sale lower second.
there is no way that Steve jobs will introduce the same interface as the iphone ( i mean touch screen itunes movies, music) before the iphone)
you do not cannibalize you sales by introducing a mid game product, now
may be and i say maybe he might introduce a 5g ipod with the Beatles on it
why not , but a stripped version of the iphone there is absolutely not possible !
I think the multi-touch interface will soon affect our lives more than many
have realized. The first time I saw it I thought of Minority Report. The
multi-touch widescreen iPod is inevitable IMHO. Next: Macbook or tablet?

The iPhone without the phone idea sounds great. It could just be an iPod with the cool flip/rotate features and the touch screen. Maybe keep OSX on it so it could do more advanced games, contacts, and notes. I dont know how the screen will hold up against prints and scratches though.

why not have a rumor saying that Apple Computer bought Apple Corp and the new company is called Apple, Inc. with a record label as a subsidiary so they do not have to deal with the RIAA labels in the future.
That would be worth a Superbowl ad announcement….
A widescreen iPod was pretty much due at the September ’06 iPod “update” announcement. A lot of people were surprised and disappointed that Apple didn’t do anything significant to the iPods at that point. And now, Apple is really, really late with a viPod. It’s not going to drain sells from the iPhone if all it is is a widescreen iPod with basically the same functionality as the current models. I seriously doubt they’re going to let iPods just wither on the vine until after June. That doesn’t make any sense, and deliberately holding back a technology that you have access to now doesn’t seem like Apple’s way of doing things. Why give the competition a chance to play catch up. And after all, a sell is a sell, and they need iPod business just as much as they want iPhone business.
> That doesn’t make any sense, and deliberately holding back a technology that you have access to now doesn’t seem like Apple’s way of doing things.
Deliverately holding back??? Just because Apple has 5 or 6 prototypes of the iPhone working, it doesn’t mean Apple is ready to mass-produce a touch-screen wide-screen iPod by the millions. Be realistic. For a “spring” release, production would already have to be in progress. I have not heard any of the usual rumors that accompany Apple contracting an Asian manufacturer to make new “6G” iPods. June (only five-months away), may be the earliest Apple can deliver any product with the touch-screen. In that case, the first product will be the iPhone, because it has been announced and Apple wants it to be the focus of attention. It will be followed a few months later by the new “video” iPod, to generate another round of media hype before the all important “holiday” quarter.
Apple will just have to endure a few months of iPod sales lull. Fortunately, Mac sales will get a huge boost during that time with the release of Leopard. Overall, I’d say Apple did a good job of orchestrating its product releases for 2007.
I think we’ll see the Multi-Touch iPod before iPhone comes out. Remember, the operative word is “phone” – you have to sign up with Cingular for two years to buy one. People who just want an iPod, or don’t have Cingular in their area are not going to buy one. They have the potential to sell probably between 10-12 million MT iPods in 2007 (assuming they take the place of the existing HD-based iPods), where they hope to sell 10 million iPhones by June 2008. That’s a lot of money they’d be kissing goodbye by waiting. I’m sure they spent a fortune developing the Multi-Touch technology. They need to start getting a return on that investment.
Um… remember 1984? the Mac? and the teaser for MacWorld? “The first 30 years were just the beginning…… Welcome to 2007”? Well Mac…. 2007…. Put two and two together…. A brand new Mac with a revolutionary UI – Multi-touch thus similar to the Mac in 1984 with the revolutionary UI – Point and click.
“Pshychadelic rainbow colors. And remember Apple has a patent on a color-changing case design too.”
Yes, you buy a white iMac and it goes yellow. We know.
Wouldn’t releasing the touchscreen iPod first be screwing over Cingular? It’s bound to decrease sales somewhat, if most of the features are available elsewhere. Or is the argument that iPhone sales would increase if people could actually play with their friends’ touchscreen iPod before making the decision?
In any case, this is all speculation.
LordRobin: Wouldn’t releasing the touch-screen iPod first be screwing over Cingular? It’s bound to decrease sales somewhat, if most of the features are available elsewhere.
as per my previous comment, i really don’t follow this logic: even if a new iPod could massage your feet, so long as it can’t make phone calls or do web stuff it cannot compete with the iPhone. The iPhone is going after the nano + smart-phone crowd by offering an all-in-one device. A video iPod is a dedicated device for those who want lots of music and video on the go. There is little overlap between these markets. Once it becomes feasible to combine an 80 GB iPod with a smart-phone then there will be the relevant overlap. Current battery life issues suggest that this day is a long long way off.
Now, if a new iPod has Wi-Fi and a Web app then things will be different, as this would certainly hurt iPhone sales. However, Wi-Fi is one area in which the Zune has an identifiable advantage, albeit in its crippled form it is virtually useless. Apple will want to introduce wireless features soon. I suspect that a touch screen wireless iPod will come late this year or early next year, but not until the iPhone is released. Alternatively, a new iPod with a March release could have its Wi-Fi features locked until June.
Would this be remastered Beatles music or the same music you can currently buy on CDs?
I don’t see an ipod with touchscreen until the holiday season is upon us again.
It’s all about the phone and macs ( Leopard) until then.
Steve will want the focus on iPhone from now until November.
As well as Apple TV and the new OS. Ipods lay low until the big holiday splash (Maybe wi-fi/touchscreen iPods)

A clear case of squirtus interruptus.
Apple has only had one other SuperBowl ad, and it was to premier the Mac. Now you think that they’d waste this ad on a new iPod? I don’t think so. I think a new iPod is due, but I don’t think they’d use the SuperBowl to do it. My guess is Leopard will be given a release date, and the secret feature or whatever, which I’m starting to think may be the new Multi-Touch interface. Think about it. 1984, the Mac-the mouse (although it was in the Lisa as well). 2007, Leopard-Multi-Touch GUI in a computer.
This is not a RUMOR. It’s just a damn guess. Move along.
“But, and here’s the really important questions, what color would it be?”
Strawberry Fields Red
Submarine Yellow
Blackbird Black
BlueJay Way Blue
ALthough having the Beatles on iTunes would be quite a coup, it’s a shame that so many ppl who may be hearing those recordings for the first time would be forced to listen to them at 128 kbps.
Those records are some of the most jaw-droppingly-amazingly produced albums in the history of music. CDs barely do them justice.
“Howe asks, “Now wearing my marketing hat, this raises a question: Does this ad buy make sense from an ROI point of view?””
At this point the article falls down.
We’re taking conjecture from a journalist?!
Maybe they’ll talk about the Beatles. But no major iPod is required.
iTunes always works from an ROI point of view. Promote iTunes downloads, which promotes iPod sales, which promotes AppleTV and Macs….
Speaking of which… it wouldn’t kill Apple to do an AppleTV ad for the Superbowl…
I hear that Microsoft is thinking about unveiling a Milli Vanilli Zune to celebrate all the ideas they have ripped off from other people over the years.
You gut the iPhone 5 months before it ever hits the market if they do that.
—
Ha! Totally disagree, but wouldn’t it be cool if Apple could just sell all these widescreen iPods then put the PHONE software up on iTunes when the iPhone is released?
After all, it’s just one of the many programs on the iPhone…
“My guess is Leopard will be given a release date”
LMFAO!!!!!!!!
Ok, last post, I swear… but that was fuckin hilarious.
Who do you think is looking forward to the Leopard release date more, Bears fans or Colts fans.
Wow. Wow. Wow.
I think “ve found the ad they want to run:
This is the biggest show/game on TV, with millions of average people who don’t watch keynotes
ITS APPLE TV in your living room
NOW, if they would get Peter Max to design a psychedelic skin for the Beatles iPod : )
We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine…
What I think they could sell is a stripped down WS beast:
Wide screen like the iPhone.
iPod functions only
No phone, no WiFi, no bluetooth
Runs OSX and have a 40-100 gig HD instead of flash.
That could sell for 350-500 easily.
The bonus for Apple is that they get the production numbers on the components up so that the price they pay will go down.
Plus this is really what I want and have been waiting for for over a year.
Not only is this simply speculation, the speculation quoted is that Apple will NOT advertise a multi-touch iPod.
MDN, why are you so sloppy?
The Beatles? Who gives a shit? They’re so boring, I can’t even name ONE song of theirs that I like.
I heard it will be for a new iPod with something called Future iPod Graphics, or F.i.G. for short.
It will integrate seamlessly with Mac OSX giving the user a plethora of options-not just iTunes.
So there you have it.
At long last.
The F.i.G. Newton…
What if Apple Inc. just buys Apple? Then can become a proper label/studio.
This rumored is based on Merlin Man’s announcement on Macbreak Weekly-it was totally sarcastic and he has stated his source is “his butt”.
I think the next revision of the iPod will only be announced at an Apple Special Event. Announcing products via commercials is not Apple’s style. Count on just another addition of the “I’m a Mac” commercials.
Okay, this is odd. My comment from January 19th is here.
I’m not as convinced that I’m right, though. I just got my very first iPod–an iPod nano–which a friend of mine bought me for my birthday. It should be arriving Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
Therefore, Apple will now ship an 80GB multi-touch wifi iPod for $199 on Tuesday. Mark my words.
Nevin, are you sure about that?
Consider this from wikipedia: “”1984″ is the title of the television commercial that launched the Apple Macintosh personal computer in the United States, in January 1984.”
Steve wrote: “The Beatles? Who gives a shit? They’re so boring, I can’t even name ONE song of theirs that I like.”
———-
Uh, yes. If you don’t like them, then no one else does. And we know this because your taste is a univeral template for the global tastes of all mankind.
Damn you MDN! All you did was up this old crap story!?! My heart was pounding through my chest thinking you had some new information! I wouldn’t have slept tonight, I would’ve sat here all night long holding my credit card!
DAMN!!
Doesn’t the iPhone require Leopard? So, by extension, wouldn’t this fantasy wide-screen iPod need Leopard, too?
Although, a double-touch iPod would be fantastic. keep the Bluetooth (BT headphones?) and possibly WiFi (to Sync with iTunes?) Skip the phone and web stuff and pop in a 100GB hard drive.
There are PLENTY of people who would prefer a large capacity iPod over the nano capacity iPhone.
I, for one, would buy one the next day. Maybe I’d skip the rest of the Stupor Bowl and scoot on over to the Fifth Avenue store (yeah, I can walk there in 30 minutes!!!) topick one up!
As for the Beatles Apple Corp. partnering with Apple Inc. to announce the release of the entire Beatles catalogue, newly mastered. It’s a win-win. There’s NO WAY I’d waste money and disk space on any iTS music at the current sampling rate. Bundle them in Apple Lossless format and it might be worth considering. I’d like to see Beatles SACDs
> This isn’t even a rumor. It’s speculation.
Agreed. If Apple was ready to start selling the wide-screen, multi-touch iPod, there would be some “real” rumors. There would be leaks from the Asian company that was contracted to manufacture them.
Just because Apple showed off 5 or 6 prototypes of iPhone at MacWorld, it does not mean it has the capacity to start selling millions of similar iPods 30 days later.
iPhone first, probably earlier than June. Then, about 3 months later, this “rumored” iPod.
Yeah, I like the September-October time frame, myself.
The Touch iPod, baby. I can’t wait (but I’ll have to)!!
Well, from a market timing perspective, doesn’t it make more sense to release new shuffles and nanos in the fall since it’s gift-giving season and how many people spend $250 on individual gifts? (One of the Zune-Crack-a-Lackin marketing mistakes.)
With tax rebates soon on the way, we’re entering the season where a Baby-Boomer is more likely to spend big bucks on themselves for something like a multi-touch, wide-screen, Beatles iPod.
A multi-touch Gisele Bündchen iPod makes a lot more sense(s). With Braille.
If true, chairs in Redmond will start killing themselves.
TowerTone: “The F.i.G. Newton”
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”LOL” style=”border:0;” />
Ballmer’s doodle list has an idea for rebranding the Zune.
It’s called the iSack Newton.
Very clever, that – the “F.I.G. Newton.” TT, you should donate your brain to science.
If this blog post is correct, there will be no Apple ad during the Super Bowl:
NoAppleSuperBowlAd
And I will be disappointed.
Oh crap, the MDN redirect does not link the right page. Just cut and past the following URL:
http://www.investorvillage.com/smbd.asp?mb=445&mn=28139&pt=msg&mid=1355784
I tested that and it works.
Oh double crap, I screwed up the link syntax and had garbage in the Name box. Here is the proper link:

I want a bang Bros video ipod
The Beatles alone not big enough a Superbowl advertisement? This guy should talk to a few musicans or beatles fans, or just the general population and ask them who the biggest pop band of all is. Answer: The Beatles. I’m not a huge Beatles fan, but I know their relevence to moderm music and the impact they had on society during the 60’s and the members individually during the later years.
There are plenty of people (like me) who are currently under contract with a wireless provider and will have to wait longer than June to get the iPhone. But those same people might be willing to spring for a less-expensive but still cool widescreen iPod that say…has a hard drive in it… like 100GB so its actually usable for video….
Col. Angus
I’ve got half a mind to do just that…
Unsquirted
Zune-the butt of our jokes.
Please Please Me!
@James
Funniest thing I’ve read all week! LOL
Then I’ll have three time mo fun
Than Clinton had before”
Maybe a yellow Zune?
No. A blue zune with a stain on it.
You’re all wrong, and don’t forget where you heard it first:
Apple sees the writing on the wall and the commercial will be an announcement that iPod is now compatible with Zune Marketplace. That’s right: the world’s most fantastic MP3 player now plays nice with those crappy iPods. Blockbuster stuff that’s gonna rock the market. Welcome iPod losers to the magnificent Zune Marketplace! You’ll find all your favorite artists and content with this powerful and easy-to-use software.
Admit it, you iPod lemmings have been looking over the fence and drooling at the Zune Martketplace points system, generous and flexible WiFi sharing and FM radio support. Well, Apple has been drooling too and this time they know when they’re beat. If you can’t beat ’em join ’em. Way to come to your your senses, Apple.
My apologies in advance to Colts fans who must endure a crushing loss to the mighty Chicago Bears.
Welcome to the Social.
Yes A Yellow Submerine. The iPhone Wide Screen has a perfict shape for a Yellow Submarine on the back side. Yes a widescreeni Pod Now! would sell like Hot Cakes And YES it would expose millions more people to the NEW iPone coming out later. This idea would sell alot more iPones this summer. Fall Chrismass Season Apple will have more new stuff
bear in mind kids that MDN is only recylcling an old rumor that has no basis in fact. Even the MAC wingnuts over at Mac Rumors are sceptical. So chill out. Would it be cool? SURE. Will it happen? Only Jobs knows.
™
There will be a superbowl ad but it’s the finale to the PCvsMac dialogue.
™
Hodgeman will say, “I don’t even get it……if you’re really cool, that means you get to be a lying person whenever you feel like it?”
™
Long will say, “You don’t have any taste….and I don’t mean that in a small way….I mean that in a big fcking way.”
™
“So, Steve Jobs invented the world, and then the rest of us came along? Well, here’s how I go a Ballmering all over your ass.”
™
At this point we’re about 7 seconds into the ad. Hodgeman breaks the leg off the chair he’s holding and comes at Long. A struggle ensues. As Hodgeman is forcing the leg into Longs mouth like Ash did to Ripley, Ringo spelunks by a rope onto Hodgemans back, Yoko pulls at his shoe at stage left, MacCartney is seen upstage rehearsing a really bad song.
Hodgeman suddenly goes limp. Someone says he was taken down by the smallest of critters. “You mean like the flu?” someone asks. Then the Budweiser commercial starts.
™
It will be so weird that 20 years from now it will be hailed as the second best superbowl commercial ever aired.
I want a Bush / Cheney ipod!
anti-creative cretin psychic: Stoned before noon? Nice!
Wouldn’t it be scary if Zune Tang were right? Of course it’s be a completely ludicrous idea, which makes no sense when you look at the numbers…but I think I’d scream like a little girl and hide in a corner if Zune Tang were right for once…
ZT, someone has been doing a very poor impersonation of you, good to see you back.
If there is a new ipod advertised tonight I will eat the losing teams socks. No way new iPod.
iPhone. yes. we will see the first iPhone ad 2night.
Beatles? I’m not so confident this will not happen, possible.
Simply a new mac ad? Yea.
“Hi, I’m a mac”
“And I’m a PC”
“Hey PC, what’s with “glam rock” look?”
“Well mac, as you know I’ve been waiting 6 years for a makeover to be more more like you”.
“You look snazzy, but I don’t wear rhinestones, lipstick and eyeliner”
“Maybe you should, Mac, maybe you should”
Eh! That’s why I don’t work in marketing..
Everyone that likes Beatles music already has it….for a long time.
What benefit would it be to announce it at the Superbowl? Every Beatle tune I want on my iPod is already there from my Beatles CDs.
And I really doubt the under 25 crowd is much interested in the Fab 4.
Apple should release a widescreen iPod earlier than later for the following reasons:
1. Video is better on a larger and widescreen format. The current offering look lame compared to the iPhone.
2. Many customers want larger drive sizes. This is only possible with hard drives at the moment. Apple can easily make a thicker WS iPod with 40-100 gig space.
3. Sharing common components like the screen, interface and chips will help drive down component costs.
4. Not everyone wants Phone, web capabilities yet, but want the next generation iPod.
So I think Apple could have a WS iPod with the following specs without hurting iPhone sales:
40-100 gig drive, large and widescreen display, no phone, no web, runs OSX, syncs data from mac (Home on iPod), readily display HD on connected TVs.
They could sell this for 350-500 easily.
I know I would buy one. I’ve been waiting for this for a year now.
mac + pc + leopard
mac + pc + leopard
mac + pc + leopard
Apple is not on the lists at any source for SB2007 ads that I can find.
Rumors of an Apple ad might be wild speculation only. A check of the Advertising Age report on who is advertising during the Super Bowl shows NO listing of Apple. Below is a link to planned advertisers from the AdAge site:
http://adage.com/SuperBowlBuyers/
I will say it again, hope to hear some response

what do you think
I’m voting a BIG NO on a touch screen iPod… Maybe a fith gen Beatles themed iPod, but not the widescreen iPod.. Steve will hold a special keynote before the holidays for an announcement like the widescreen iPod.
Steve Jobs will do this, that, and the other, at such and such time of year…blah blah blah.
Apple won’t do this, that, and the other, before such and such time of year…blah blah blah.
From a marketing perspective, it only makes sense that…blah blah blah.
They’ll announce this, that, and the other….blah blah blah

Looks to me like there is an awful lot of talking out of one’s ass here. No one knows anything! Period! End of story! And for anyone to pretend they can magically say what Apples’ strategy is going to be on *anything* is ridiculous. If anyone here had that kind of insight, they’d be very rich indeed. So many experts on the internet. (Insert rolly eyes here.)
This is one of the reasons the stock fluctuates so much. Time and time again, people get all hopped up on their own fumes of prediction, and then when those predictions turn out to be false, we’re all oh so dissapointed.
Here is my prediction:
Apple may release a widescreen Beatles iPod today. Or they may not. Apple may announce the imminent release of Leopard today. Or they may not. Apple may advertise AppleTV today. Or they may not. Apple may advertise the iPhone today. Or they may not. Apple might air a commercial on the Super Bowl today. Or they may not. Or they may do something no one else has even thought of at this point. Or they may not.
It’s an iPhone commercial. Steve thinks that it’s the future. The phone is announced, now is the time to get the word out to everyone. That’s almost literally, everyone in the US. Even if people don’t watch the superbowl, they’ll hear about this.
What if it’s Leopard? With a scheduled Spring launch, and the revised date for the WWDC – this seems like the ideal time to steal Vista’s thunder. Although Vista launched with more of a “thud.”
MW:couldn’t. Why couldn’t Apple advertise the OS for once?

I think you are dead on with your prediction!!!
just heard snippets from the new love album.
Much of it is morphing 2 songs together.
Hmmnn, I dunno…
Here is a list from Advertising Age of the advertisers for the Super Bowl today.
I don’t know how complete it is, but it looks pretty comprehensive.
Apple is not on the list.
http://adage.com/SuperBowlBuyers/
I think Apple will have the commercial for the iPhone©. If they wanted to announce something I think they wouldn’t announce it so soon after the iPhone©. Therefore if they wanted to announce a Yello Submarine iPod© or a Beetles iPod©, they could. We must also remember that Apple has a patent on a color-changing case design©. <–That could possibly be the announcment. I still think they aren’t going to announce anything. We must also give thought that it is not a rumor it is a speculation. Also they probably won’t announce the widescreen iPod© for a while.
If you have noticed most of these thoughts and comments were already discussed and posted (sorry if I used your words) therefore there are many different things-huge & timy-that could be shown tonight. I guess we’ll have to wait to find out.
I think it will be a modern version of “1984” with the release of Leopard… The ‘surprise’ feature will be the ability to run Windoze apps right in Leopard….
Wouldn’t THAT be special?
After all the speculation, the stock will go down even further tomorrow if they don’t have a Super Bowl commercial. It won’t matter that Apple never said it WOULD have a Super Bowl commercial. It only matters now that there will be dissappointment if there is not one. The stock has been stuck in the mid 80’s now for weeks. It’s as if MacWorld never happened.

MW: “near”… Is it ?
Halfway through the 3rd quarter….Apple store and ITMS are still open for business as usual….no changes.
no ad
Yup….no ad….middle of the 4th quarter….looks like they won’t be there.
too bad…the litigation in England is continuing with Apple Corps Ltd. appealing coming up on the 26th of February.
And no Apple spot listed on the Ad Age site. Shows you not to trust rumor sites.
I sincerely hope that whoever OK’d GM’s Super Bowl ads are out of work tomorrow morning. What an awful waste of milions…
And I sincerely hope that Apple doesn’t hire those idiots!!
game over… no ad… oh well, goes to show you never can tell.
Game over. No ad.
MDN is gay
I knew nothing would happen!!
Well, Superbowl is over. Where was the Apple ad?
where’s da beef?
On cnn.com there is a Circuit City ad with the Beatles’ “Love” picture on an iPod… is this meaningful?
And what ad would that be? It wasn’t the HP ad was it?
Speculation and rumor doesn’t mean something will happen.
What’s worse than finding a maggot in your apple?
Finding half a maggot.
Just watched the whole Super Bowl (yay Colts), and no Apple ad.
Another one of those mystery rumors that never comes to fruition?
No Apple commercials tonight. Maybe some kind of announcement on new music Tuesday.
was there even a commercial??? did i miss it?! wtf?
No Apple commercials! Good! I’m all cash right now, no AAPL.
The Bears looked like a high school team…Bad!
For the next year we will now get to hear how great Peyton Manning (mostly handing the ball to someone else) is…Super Bad!
NO Commercial at ALL!! I watched the Super Bowl for nothing! Who started this rumor????
I think rumors like this are started by people who want a buying opportunity for AAPL.
I understand that the rumour of what the Ad would be about is just speculation, but this twit said that “Apple has picked up rights to air a Super Bowl commercial on February 4”
That is not a rumour/speculation, that is a STATEMENT.
The way that is written, it seems like that is knowledge of a booking schedule for the advertising for the Super Bowl.
What a turd!
As I said I have no issue if rumours don’t eventuate, or the actual product predicted isn’t the same as what is eventually shown, but do not EMPHATICALLY STATE “Apple has picked up rights to air a Super Bowl commercial on February 4” when clearly you wouldn’t know your left nut, if the right one wasn’t next to it!
My 2 cents,

Superpower my arse, more like lazy fat people.
Anyone for more than a minute seriously think that Apple will ever do another Superbowl ad since that little bombshell they dropped in 1984 that is STILL considered the best ever? Doubt it. Why mess with perfection?
And, Cap’n – thanks for the “spelling” lesson. Sure woun’t fourget about putting thaut extrau leutter wheure thue sun doun’t shuine anytiume sooun.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Captain Cornflakes, pulease guo fuuck yourself….mate
LOL!
What Super bowl ad???
Apple must have realized at the last minute no one really cares that it will be able to sell Beatles songs via iTunes. (Everybody that wants them already owns them!)
Or the Steve was upset that he was not featured prominently enough in the ad.
There is really no reason for Apple to have a Super Bowl ad. Unless it was a teaser for some great secret feature in Leopard that was to be announced on Tuesday…
alas, another rumor flamed away.
The rumor concerning the new ipod and it’s connection to the Beatles was started by Merlin Mann – sort of. On Macbreak Weekly, the participants were just idly chatting about what Apple was going to do at the Superbowl and Merlin fabricated the whole idea of the Apple Ipod/Beatle from his head. It was a joke. He just though it would be a really cool. If you’ve ever listend to Merlin Mann, you know that he has a quick wit and an incredible ability to improvise. He wasn’t serious and he didn’t mean to be taken seriously.
Then, this joke took on a life of it’s own.
Now people are dissapointed in Apple for not “coming thorugh” with the Superbowl ad.
I guess even Apple can’t meet expectations when those expectations are created from thin air.
Captain Cornflakes-Spelling is not taught in the USA . Nobody cares.
Oh shit, in all that American bashing, I swallowed another tooth. Blimey.
Hey Cap’n, its ass not arse.
Why hasn’t this article been updated with the comment that it didn’t fucking happen!!!
I don’t think Apple would be willing to confuse the market quite this soon after the iPhone introduction. Regardless, my bet is that the Super Bowl ad is about more than just adding the Beatles catalog to iTunes.
bowel syndrome supplement
I still think they aren’t going to announce anything. We must also give thought that it is not a rumor it is a speculation. Also they probably won’t announce the widescreen iPod© for a while.

I received 1 st credit loans when I was 25 and this aided me very much. But, I require the credit loan once again.
I guess that to receive the mortgage loans from banks you should present a good motivation. But, one time I’ve got a small business loan, because I wanted to buy a car.
