RUMOR: Apple to release Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard in June
Monday, April 02, 2007 - 02:19 PM EST

Apple Store"Apple is currently planning to release Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard in June, mostly likely at or around its Worldwide Developers Conference, reliable sources report," Think Secret reports.

"The release will come at the tail end of spring, which ends June 21, enabling Apple to meet its original shipping estimate," Think Secret reports.

Think Secret reports, "'Leopard is shaping up to be a more significant release than anyone expected, with much more to come than any of the developer builds have led on,' one source said."

"Also scheduled for a June release now are new versions of Apple's iLife and iWork suites, which will pack extensive Leopard-dependent features. Sources say Apple continues to toy with the idea of bundling one or both suites with the new operating system free of charge in an effort to further play up the extra value and features Mac OS X offers over Microsoft's new Windows Vista," Think Secret reports.

yeah! Bundle them together!

I would actually try iWork if it was bundled.
An iLife/iWork/Leopard 3-way would be **hot**.

Whatever. Bundle 10.5, iLife, and Penryn chips in new Mac Pros, iMacs, and MacBook Pros then I can really celebrate. I'm holding out till the grand tifecta.

Apr 02, 07 - 01:34 pm Comment from: Brad

I can see it now, Steve announcing during his keynote that "thanks to all your effort, we can now announce the release of Leopard," or something like that.

Apr 02, 07 - 01:34 pm Comment from: Sunlokyee

why everything for june? april and may needs some love too.

Apr 02, 07 - 01:35 pm Comment from: McGherkinstein Jones

"there is a reasonable chance that Apple will drop its yearly naming convention for the software suites"

I always thought that was kinda dumb anyway.

MW perhaps a new "method"

Apr 02, 07 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Micro Me

Ditto Chrissy. MacWrite and MacPaint (was MacDraw bundled too? I can't remember) were great for the sales of the original Macs.

Apr 02, 07 - 01:37 pm Comment from: Gusselstank

3 weeks of June are in the spring!

Apr 02, 07 - 01:43 pm Comment from: john

If they bundled iLife with Leopard it would be an awsome upgrade. Certainly better than Vista by a very big margin. I'm upgrading no matter what but this would certainly be a bonus if they did so.
The rumor that June is the month Apple will release Leopard however has been going around for a while already.

Apr 02, 07 - 01:44 pm Comment from: @Micro Me

You know, I kinda miss MacWrite... Maybe we could get them to breathe some life in it again, quick, capable, efficient - perhect Apple.

MW: Working

as in all ChrissyOne know is working on the corner - its the only way she can afford to buy a Mac.

Apr 02, 07 - 01:48 pm Comment from: tested and NOT approved

Apple is making a huge mistake by releasing 10.5 in June. The product is very unstable at this time and should be released in the Fall of 2007. They did the same thing with 10.4 and 10.5 is much more of a beta product than tiger was at this time.

Apr 02, 07 - 01:49 pm Comment from: No Sh*t, Sherlock

Spring ends in June & it's been obvious that 10.5 wasn't ready before iPWSF (iPhone World San Francisco 2007). I and many others have long been saying June. Probably right before or coinciding with WWDC.

Apr 02, 07 - 01:50 pm Comment from: anthony007

June is the new March.

Apr 02, 07 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Jimmy

Look for Leopard soon.

Apr 02, 07 - 02:06 pm Comment from: coolfactor

It's actually really smart to having iLife and iWork releases in line with major OS releases since much of the new features in the suites are dependent on the new technology released. This means the software advances can go much smoother and be more sigificant.

Apr 02, 07 - 02:07 pm Comment from: AG Pennypacker

Apple has been great about making new releases work on old machines. I'm concerned now, with the whole intel thing, that there will be limited support for PPC useres. I use Intel at work but PPC's at home.

Any thoughts?

I wonder why i've never heard anyone address this before?

Re: Jimmy

"Look for Leopard soon."...... Soon rhymes with June!

Apr 02, 07 - 02:10 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

tested and NOT approved got at least one thing wrong ... they did not delay Tiger (10.4) late in the cycle. They announced it would be an 18-month cycle early on - after a number of complaints - one from every other Mac user - about paying $129 a year just to stay current. It looked like they were going to do another 18-month job early in Leopard's life, but they stretched it about 6 months in and now they are shooting for the end of their announced window.

(on my knees) Oh, PLEASE bundle iLife, and maybe even iWork, in with the OS. Think of the value added to your name ... oh, wait, their name has more intrinsic value than Dell, or H-P, or Gateway. Never Mind!

It seems like theres a rumor every month saying that Leopard is coming out in 2 months. Has anyone else noticed this?

Gasp!! They are going to deliver it…well, right when they said they would; end of Spring 2007! Imagine that.

"The release will come at the tail end of spring, which ends June 21, enabling Apple to meet its original shipping estimate," Think Secret reports.

Oooooooooooo, kinda like what Steve Jobs has been saying from the very beginning?

Think Secret reports, "'Leopard is shaping up to be a more significant release than anyone expected, with much more to come than any of the developer builds have led on".

Oooooooooooo, kinda like what Steve Jobs has been saying from the very beginning? "Anyone" being everyone but Steve Jobs I guess? Or anyone except anyone who actually took what Steve said at face value?

Think Secret, you insane ("let us re-state the obvious") out-on-a-limb rumor mongerers, you....

Someone tell me again why they haven't long ago closed up shop and slunk away? How long has it been since they've actually broken an actual story, rather than just regurgitated the day's headlines?

At least "Apple Recon" had the sense to go away gracefully- well, sneak away like thieves in the night at least.

"At least "Apple Recon" had the sense to go away gracefully- well, sneak away like thieves in the night at least".

FWIW Robert Morgan on Apple Recon was telling the world and his dog to buy Apple well before anyone else. If you'd followed his advice and bought at the time you would be pretty rich by now...

Thieves in the night? Hardly.

do you think if they bundle all of those things that it might make it cost more? like $149?

Apr 02, 07 - 02:20 pm Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1.

That site, and others like it would have a lot more credibility if they didn't post so many rumours from so called sources. Obviously it would be great if they were actually right, but by posting new dates and information every day they just lose any credibility they could ever have. Of course there's no money in that.

See you in June, MDN.
There won´t be any news here to read for the next two+ months. Just hash and rehash and rumors.

Apr 02, 07 - 02:25 pm Comment from: Jeff Edsell

Take as long as you want, Apple. I'd rather have it better than have it sooner.

Apr 02, 07 - 02:29 pm Comment from: Gotta love Think Secret

Um, Tacitus, are we talking about the same Apple Recon? I am talking about this one:

http://applerecon.com/

They were only around a few months (tho' widely quoted amongst the blogsphere), and got very little right about anything.

"FWIW Robert Morgan on Apple Recon was telling the world and his dog to buy Apple well before anyone else"

Which decade are you talking about? I was talking about the last couple months.

Apr 02, 07 - 02:33 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

Micro Me,
MacDraw was never bundled with the Mac system. It always cost extra.

I think this is a good point. Unlike all previous OS releases, Tiger was a radical revamp of the OS and moving to Tiger when it first came out was a major mistake for me. The problems were not ironed out until after a few updates. With that in mind, all the current prognostication seems to indicate Leopard will be a radical change and that means beta-style *trouble* for a lot of Mac users. I am really hyped about what Apple is set to release in 10.5 but thi time will be waiting for at least the second update before buying.

Let the bitching about slipped ship dates begin!

Apr 02, 07 - 02:45 pm Comment from: Good News

If it is true. Maybe Apple realizes if it doesn't fix iLife and iWork - especially iLife parts iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD - they might as well drop it.

With the coming of Leopard and xxx-core Mac Pro, I have high hopes and eagerly await a new dawn.

Apr 02, 07 - 02:53 pm Comment from: Micro Me

@The Other Steve.

Thanks for reminding me. Good for it's day, MacDraw.

I hope the bundling rumour is true.

Well, all I can say is that the suspense has been killing me...

...bundled...mmmmmm....

Apr 02, 07 - 02:59 pm Comment from: Gotta love Think Secret

Sir Toby, I can't help being hard on Think Secret- they make it just so frickin' easy. They are still convinced of their own relevance in our little sphere... still wallowing in the "glory days" of being sued by Apple over Asteroid, or whatever it was....

The only reason Apple would bother suing them today is over bringing down the general level of discourse over all things Apple.

Look, for those who ask "will Leopard be ready for prime time" in June..

Yes, it will. You can bet Steve has his programmers working despicably long hours to get it all done and working in time- I'm not saying it's right, but why do you think he makes those speeches begging forgiveness from his employees and THEIR FAMILIES at every Mac event? He works them like dogs, and I guess they tolerate it for finite periods- because none of them want to be Microsoft, and there's nothing that Steve Jobs HATES more than missing a self-imposed, and public, deadline. He also hates to repeat past mistakes. We all benefit from it, and should tip our caps to his people.

So, I say, yes it will be done and will be ready.

Apr 02, 07 - 03:14 pm Comment from: glad cow

If iLife and iWork were bundled than I would anticipate a price increase. I would definitely be willing to pay $179 or so for that bundle. Even $199 would be a bargain compared to buying all three titles separately. Cool times ahead. Cool times.

Anyone here using C3 beta? Is it supposed to be the case that when I launch it that there's no background? For example, I have the tool bars on left and right but the background is my desktop. That doesn't seem correct. I realize this is beta but just wondering...

OK, I'm very confused because isn't iLife already bundled with the OS? I was inclined to believe that it is... considering iLife is what Apple touts about Getting a Mac the most...
From the Apple website: "Every Mac comes with iLife, a suite of software that transforms your photos, music, and video into all kinds of projects."
If that doesn't say, "iLife comes bundled with macs"... I don't know what does?
Now, I understand iWork... that would be a welcome bundled productivity suite.

you answered your own question. iLife comes bundled with macs, not with the OS. meaning if you buy a retail copy of Leopard, you won't get iLife with it, new or old.
