RUMOR: Apple to release wireless accelerometer-equipped computer mouse
Monday, January 05, 2009 - 05:28 PM EST

"The successor of Apple's Mighty Mouse could actually bring much more mightiness if reports we obtained from our sources are to be believed," Alexandros Roussos reports for SiliconRumors.

"The mouse that will succeed to the Mighty Mouse could be equipped with an accelerometer and come in a wireless only version sources told SiliconRumors," Roussos reports.

"Sources added that it could not only replace the Mighty Mouse but also the Apple Remote Control which has become optional in the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro refreshes," Roussos reports.

Mighty Mouses SUCK!!!

Jan 05, 09 - 05:35 pm Comment from: me

The Mighty mouse is a piece of garbage.

Jan 05, 09 - 05:38 pm Comment from: coolfactor

Wow, a bunch of babies.

Jan 05, 09 - 05:39 pm Comment from: @me

Odd. I use two and find they actually work for what I use them for.

Jan 05, 09 - 05:44 pm Comment from: Tom Strong

I've always liked my Mighty Mouse. Suck it.

Jan 05, 09 - 05:53 pm Comment from: PC Apologist

Mighty mice here at the office have been more bad than good. Sadly true of many of Apple's ride-along peripherals.

- the new skinny keyboards get bent. last good one was the full-size white-key

- mighty mouse wheelyball clogs & fails.

- iphone earbuds break -- on my 3rd pair in less than a year.

It'd be nice to see a fix of the mightymouse. improvements are even better, but a fix at least.

Jan 05, 09 - 06:22 pm Comment from: jbella

I personally think the mighty mouse is terrific. Works well and does not have an obnoxious number of buttons like the logitech mice. THe only thing that I can complain about is the ball gets gunked up pretty regularly, but it's easy to clean.

Jan 05, 09 - 06:24 pm Comment from: Crazyy

PC Apologist and others: please stop posting about hardware you do not own- some of those comments show a lack of ownership. I feel the mighty mouse is the best mouse on the market AND I use one on a Windows PC at work because I must use a PC at work. Although you can't scroll sideways with it in Windows, it is awesome and helped my carpel tunnel. The new thin chiclet keyboards are good for people like me who program and type a lot - helped witharm strain - I use the wireless keyboard with my Macbook at home

Jan 05, 09 - 06:29 pm Comment from: Grigori

No, no, NO! We don't need another mouse; we need an external multi-touch trackpad!

Jan 05, 09 - 06:44 pm Comment from: TowerTone

I am on my third Mighty Mouse in three years, all replaced under warranty by Apple, including a free upgrade to Bluetooth, which has the same trackball problem as the others.

If they do release a new type, I will ask for one of them to replace my current mouse, hopefully ending the problems.

If not, I will buy one of these when my warranty expires

iPhone + Snatch = Awesome wireless mouse, keyboard, and remote.

Jan 05, 09 - 06:53 pm Comment from: Brau

I have two "mighty" mice and they suck something mighty.
1. The scroller ball constantly gets jammed up and is near impossible to clear.
2. They won't scroll inside a Stickies note for some god-unknown reason when any 3rd party mouse will.
3. They constantly cause errant clicks invoking the Dashboard, Expose, etc, when you don't want it.
4. They confuse the heck out of new users who, with the invisible buttons, fail to know why it's not working reliably.
5. The wireless ones eat batteries something fierce.

Any update will likely be welcome, but I really wish Apple would simply provide a basic reliable multi-button mouse that actually works fully within their own OS.

Jan 05, 09 - 07:02 pm Comment from: moused

Apple's had software mouse acceleration for, what, 20 years?

Why would they release a hardware accelerometer now??

Jan 05, 09 - 07:04 pm Comment from: dukemeiser

Ummm.... this doesn't sound like a mouse or a remote. It sounds like a gaming controller ala Wiimote. Hopefully one for the AppleTV. And why not? There are already thousands, if not millions of AppleTVs sitting beside TVs just waiting to be used for gaming. With a huge app store for the iPhone, the majority of which are games, Apple is in great position to offer those same developers a shot at gaming on AppleTVs everywhere.

Jan 05, 09 - 07:05 pm Comment from: MikeK

Mighty Mouse is great apart from the fact that they don't last very long. The scroll ball clogs way to easily and needs some design improvement.

Let's face it though, Apple has never been known for shipping good quality mice.

Jan 05, 09 - 07:09 pm Comment from: d'nomder

Works well and does not have an obnoxious number of buttons like the logitech mice.

Have a Logitech here. Has four buttons (two on top, two on the side I don't use) and a non-clogging scroll wheel. Hardly obnoxious.

IMO it's every bit as good as the Apple Pro mouse, my previous favorite.

Apple could learn from it.

Jan 05, 09 - 07:09 pm Comment from: Omg.

I've only been a mac convert for a year, but I already knew that logitech makes the best mice, so I stuck with them, and never bothered with a mighty mouse. I didn't think they had a right click, so why bother. But are u seriousely telling me that not only is the mighty mouse not laser, it's not even optical?!?!? You've got to be freaking kidding me!! They still use a ball???? I simply can't believe you idiots deal with terrible and innaccurate tracking, and you have to clean your ball/rollers consantly. Aren't you guys all artists anyway? wink. I wouldn't trust a non optical mouse for even video games, much less work. Remind myself never to trust you idiots again. I thought just one mouse button was bad...

Jan 05, 09 - 07:14 pm Comment from: Omg

Ok, thank goodness, you guys were talking about the scroll wheel dealy. I take back what I said.

Jan 05, 09 - 07:15 pm Comment from: @dukemeiser

It sounds like a gaming controller ala Wiimote.

Apple already has two AppleTV controllers: the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Maybe this "mouse" is Apple's answer to Wii's nunchuk? smile

Wipe the peanut butter and jelly off your fingers BEFORE using the Mighty Mouse.

Jan 05, 09 - 07:18 pm Comment from: Predrag

Omg:

take thirty seconds to look at your mighty mouse (if you can remember where you put it). It has no buttons, but it supports up to four button functions:

Left click
Right click
Side squeeze
Scroll ball push

On the bottom, you'll see a red optical sensor. On the top, instead of a scroll wheel (that goes in only one direction, up/down), you'll find a scroll ball, that allows you to scroll in 360 degrees. So, if you're working on a large photoshop file, you can move around by scrolling the ball, rather than hunting for the scroll bars, or changing the toll and using arrow keys (or dragging the mouse). I don't know if there is any other mouse out there that can do that.

The little scroll ball on the top can unfortunately quickly pick up gunk and begin to malfunction. Ordinary (and effective) remedy is to get a wet piece of smooth cloth (like a napkin), lay it on your table and run your mouse upside down across that cloth, making sure the ball gets plenty of exercise on that cloth. This fixes it for me every time.

Jan 05, 09 - 07:22 pm Comment from: Raymond in DC

The Mighty Mouse *is* laser/optical. The "ball" they're referring to is the scroll ball on top. I'm using one here (came with my iMac).

After a few months, I found mine could scroll up, but not down. I finally visited a local Apple Store for a possible warranty replacement. They took it to the back, cleaning it with an alcohol compound. Not perfect, but it's working. I too would love to replace it with a multi-touch pad.

As to Omg's "logitech makes the best mice", I spent a few years doing desktop support and replaced more than a few "Dell" and "HP" mice (made by Logitech).

Jan 05, 09 - 07:22 pm Comment from: MikeK

@predrag

Yeah, the mighty mouse is a great concept, but the fact that it jams so easily means that it has some design issues. Sometimes cleaning like you said helps, but really there has to be a better design solution out there.. I'm not gonna pretend to know what it is as I'm not a designer, but there has to be one..

Jan 05, 09 - 07:30 pm Comment from: bioness

The mighty mouse really sucks.... they really need to fix the trackball. It's a nice concept but they need to put a touchpad where the trackball is for scrolling.

Other than that, it basically gives me RSI... damn shame cause theres not that many white mouses out there that are ergonomical

Jan 05, 09 - 07:34 pm Comment from: ken1w

It's the WiiMouse.

Jan 05, 09 - 08:05 pm Comment from: Splat

Mighty Mice....I have three and LOVE them. I will admit they sometimes jam in the ball but you just clean it with compressed air can....EZ!!!

I also use an ExactMat from Razer ...Alum pad coated in teflon....and I also spray it with silicone to make it even better.

Jan 05, 09 - 08:08 pm Comment from: Joojooo

I second the external track pad. Bring multitouch to the desktop. Or perhaps a multitouch track pad / mouse pad.

Jan 05, 09 - 08:25 pm Comment from: Lilochris

What I hate about mighty mouse is when the F***ing scroll ball gets dirty & clogs.

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When everything works, it performs beautifully. The buttonless right&left;clicking works great. But I will never go out & pay a premium for it. Only will use mighty mouse if it comes with what ever Apple system I purchase next.

I bought a Full-size Logitech USB Optical mouse at walmart for $8.95 and it works just as great. Though it doesn't match my iMac Setup, It works great & I know that huge scroll wheel won't give me any issues for a LONG time.

Jan 05, 09 - 09:24 pm Comment from: NCIceman

I would rather see better mouse drivers than a new mouse. The fact that I cannot turn off acceleration is a constant annoyance to me.

That said, this is a neat idea...

Jan 05, 09 - 09:37 pm Comment from: Dijonaise

IF you are technically inclined, and love to de-assemble gadgets, there is a procedure to clean the ball pickup wheels (the actual culprit). I've done it on 3 MMs and it works. Make sure to have superglue on hand before starting.

I can only hope that apple will find a way in their heart to make the iPhone a wireless trackpad and link it to the computer. That way special programs will work with it. I thank it would be just as good for the PC, so fewer of those mice are around. Just think of all the iPhones beside the computers just working their little heart out! I can dream!

Jan 05, 09 - 10:10 pm Comment from: Cubert

I read a review in MacWorld a few years ago about a wireless mouse that had a gyroscope in it. You used it by holding it in your hand - setting it down on a table or mouse pad wasn't necessary. I wonder if this is anything like that.

Jan 05, 09 - 10:25 pm Comment from: Algr

I have the mighty mouse and have trouble with the mouse ball.

When I first got it I had a few unwanted clicks too, but I soon learned to use it well. Now the top ball is the only thing I don't like about it.

Jan 05, 09 - 11:37 pm Comment from: Crazyy

Brau and others: I don't believe you have a mighty mouse. I use one all day at work for past 3 yeArs - no clogged ball - no problems. Errant clicks going to expose? That's from YOU errantly pressing side buttons. Get a mighty mouse and use one and then give your opinions posers and MS plants.

Jan 06, 09 - 12:50 am Comment from: BMA

Mighty Mouse kicks ass!

Jan 06, 09 - 05:20 am Comment from: studentrights

I love the Mighty Mouse. You just have to be a clean person to use it, unlike those filthy PC users.

Jan 06, 09 - 07:34 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Mighty Mouse. Hateful thing! Piece o' Mierda!
The mouse I found stuck in a glue trap under my stove was mightier.

I'll stick with my Kensington Expert Mouse trackball.

Jan 06, 09 - 11:16 am Comment from: cwa107

@Grigori

Agreed. An even better idea would be a mouse with an integrated touch sensitive area where the buttons would ordinarily be that can support gestures, but act as a clickable area, much like the touchpad on notebooks. An AL enclosure would be nice too instead of the plastic.
