RUMOR: Apple to release Yellow Submarine iPod preloaded with full Beatles catalog
Wednesday, July 11, 2007 - 12:24 PM EST

"A limited-edition Yellow Submarine iPod, with every single Beatles album preloaded onto it? Oh yes," Stuart Dredge reports for Tech Digest.

"According to music industry consultancy Music Ally, the Yellow Submarine iPod may be back on Apple's roadmap, now that the iPhone launch is out of the way," Dredge reports.

"It'd be launched to tie-in with Beatles tracks finally going on sale on Apple's iTunes Store, possibly as a one-month exclusive," Dredge reports.

Here we go again.......

Jul 11, 07 - 11:36 am Comment from: Petey

Boring...

As if anyone is gonna buy Beatles music anyway on iTunes.

Everyone who wanted the music has it on cd now anyay.

Who cares????? Liberal, commie, tree-huggers.

Jul 11, 07 - 11:37 am Comment from: Timmy

Chucka-Mucka . . .

Jul 11, 07 - 11:38 am Comment from: coolfactor

I want some Beatles music. I don't have it on CD. There's people turning 21 every day of the year. There's always a fresh supply of listeners.

Jul 11, 07 - 11:38 am Comment from: FistOfGod

Someone, somewhere, will surely have much more fun than they've had since Pompeii!

Jul 11, 07 - 11:40 am Comment from: shipwithsails

If the touch screen iPod is coming in August, will the Beatles iPod be the old style or the new style. I love the Beatles but I don't think they are the massive draw they used to be. I would figure they would not sell that many of the yellow old iPods but if it's on the new touch screen and it includes a yellow screen image of the Beatles, that may do well.

Jul 11, 07 - 11:40 am Comment from: Big Mac Attack

It's the Beattles.... who cares?

Jul 11, 07 - 11:42 am Comment from: Paul M

Well, I don't know, I think it'd be kind of cool, well.

Jul 11, 07 - 11:43 am Comment from: @Petey

I think the Beatles would sell well on iTunes regardless of how they've been available so far. "Dark Side of The Moon" sold well when EMI went DRM-free, so why not the Beatles?

I have no idea what the people involved with this are thinking, really. George Harrison's widow saying that it won't be released any time soon because "you have to prepare the liner notes and find the right photos". So dumb.

Jul 11, 07 - 11:43 am Comment from: Big Mac Attack

How about a LED ZEPPELIN iPod?

Jul 11, 07 - 11:45 am Comment from: hooty

After the rumors of the new iPod with a touch screen, why would they release a yellow one in the "old" form factor??? I would love a Beatles iPod. I am a 44 year old who became a big Beatles fan in high school. I have been putting off the purchase of an iPod until the much rumored "touch screen, wi-fi" version comes out. Maybe very soon.....

Jul 11, 07 - 11:45 am Comment from: @Hap

"Who cares????? Liberal, commie, tree-huggers."

You bring up a good point. They should instead focus on releasing the cherished archives of all those conservative, capitalist greatest pop stars ever.

Oh wait...

Jul 11, 07 - 11:47 am Comment from: Buster

Who cares about a LED ZEPPELIN iPod????

Liberal, commie, tree-huggers.

Did I say that right Hap?

Jul 11, 07 - 11:59 am Comment from: shawn

well fitz, you've officially shown yourself to have no musical taste whatsoever. good job.

MW - 'serious' - are you??

Jul 11, 07 - 11:59 am Comment from: Nick Holla

That's a horrible, made-up rumor. How did you get music that was bundled with a U2 iPod? An iPod needs to be formatted and setup via iTunes, so obviously the music will not be pre-loaded. It will be redeamable like U2. As far as a yellow iPod.....lol

Jul 11, 07 - 11:59 am Comment from: Another voice

You guys crack me up. The Beatles' music will be around long after most of today's "stars" are forgotten footnotes. Oh yeah, and they've sold a few records, CDs, etc, been covered a few zillion times, and have made so much money it's insane.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:00 pm Comment from: SoE

Coolfactor:
Me too. And I'm pretty sure there are still lots of folks out there who do, too.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:01 pm Comment from: RC

This rumor is absolutely bogus. They've never released a pre-loaded iPod ever before, and they sure won't do a Beatles one now...

Jul 11, 07 - 12:03 pm Comment from: The Beatles

Paul = Egotistical
John = Communist
George = Plagiarist
Ringo = Overrated

cool smile

Jul 11, 07 - 12:09 pm Comment from: Danno Bonano

Possible this may have legs although not sure about Yellow? There are few bands like U2 that could have their own iPod. Beatles are one of them.

Could launch with the WideScreen but more likely, Apple will have the same deal they have for U2...possibly a special iTunes promo price for ALL Beatles catalog of songs.

My burning question is whether the WS iPod will have wireless browsing and ichat. I hope it is equivalent to the iPhone but with the 80-100GB HD in it and no phone capabilities. Or they could have VOIP phone capabilities over WiFi (it will come some day for sure but WiFi isn't pervasive enough yet....)

Jul 11, 07 - 12:11 pm Comment from: Fitz-hume

Is it April 1st again?

Jul 11, 07 - 12:11 pm Comment from: John B

"Ringo = Overrated"

I think most would acknowledge Ringo as the least talented member of the group. I don't think he's even really rated at all, but mostly ignored. Although I always kind of liked "Don't Pass Me By" and "Act Naturally".

Jul 11, 07 - 12:11 pm Comment from: eWorldian

How about a Purple Rain iPod with every album from Prince pre-loaded on it?

Jul 11, 07 - 12:13 pm Comment from: Cubert

"How about a LED ZEPPELIN iPod?"

Yeah, baby! Now you're talking!

It would be all black with the 4 runes symbolizing the band members etched into the back. There would be a "Satanic Chants" playlist on it by default, AND it would include a special "Play Backwards" mode.

RC, Apple wasn't able to sell iPods with pre-loaded content because that would violate the terms of its previous deal with Apple Records not to get into the music distribution business (iTS skirted the issue since Apple Computer was not selling a physical entity containing music, just a download system). Now that the two Apples have settled, that's no longer an issue.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:24 pm Comment from: functus

I refuse to buy an iPod until they come out with the William Shatner special edition, with every song released by him on it.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:24 pm Comment from: anti-creative cretin

..my iPod isn't yellow but has had several discharges ..no Beatles catalogue but it is filled with a lot of crap. thanks, I'll be here all week.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:25 pm Comment from: BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

The Beatles are B O R I N G. How many Beatles songs bring a tear to your eye or make you feel anything at all? I can name one song out of their whole catalog that does anything for me. One.

As far as conservative music stars go, you might be surprised. If you even had to ask, it'd show that you knew nothing about the lyrics to "One" (Creed) or "Don't Tread on Me" (Metallica). Now go do your homework.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:28 pm Comment from: Stefano Lavori

I used to dismiss the idea of pre-loaded iPods - Hmmm... Would Apple release an iPod pre-loaded with ANY music without any mechanism to allow the offloading of said music to the purchaser's computer? Well, I guess they could pre-load music and also include a password tied into the serial number and registered username of the device that would allow a one-time download of the catalogue... But that seemed so "un-Apple".

After living with Apple products most of my life now, I'm sure they'd develop an easier and more seamless way to do this (like the activation of the iPhone). I'm not so dismissive of the idea of pre-loaded iPods anymore. I think a Beatles' fan might be into it-artwork, lyrics, booklets, all tags plugged in for you. Could work...

@ Stefano Lavori

Didn't they offer the U2 catalog with the U2 iPods? I know you could get the box set as a certificate and download it later. But you're right - it would never come pre-loaded, no way to get it off.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:41 pm Comment from: iMat

Funny since "Yellow Submarine" might be the WORST beatles song EVER!!!!

Jul 11, 07 - 12:49 pm Comment from: AP

How about a special edition iPod for Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath...

Jul 11, 07 - 12:52 pm Comment from: Logan

Wow... a yellow iPod with lame old music.

Who cares.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:53 pm Comment from: @ BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

How old are you, exactly? If you think for a second that the music of Creed or Metallica is going to live as long as the music of the Beatles... well, maybe YOU need to do your homework.

And Ringo rocks. Not a single living drummer could improve the drum parts of any Beatles recording.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:55 pm Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

How about a codpiece shaped iPod with the complete works of Tom Jones?

Jul 11, 07 - 12:58 pm Comment from: nani

quote> How about a special edition iPod for Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath...<

Hmm - A Pink FLoyd iPod would be pink

Black Sabbath iPod could be .... black!

So what color would a Dylan iPod be?

I guess the answer is blowing in the wind.

Jul 11, 07 - 12:58 pm Comment from: Ringing Paul George's John

Just a note that you can, with recent iTunes versions, sync purchased music from an iPod onto any authorized computer. There would just be the method of taking pre-loaded content onto a first computer... but that could be a step in the activation... iTunes 7.4 anyone?

(Not that this rumor is at all true, of course.)

MW: "position"... at the John? nevermind.
