RUMOR: Apple to unveil ‘iPhone nano’ at Macworld Expo in January (with image)
Monday, December 15, 2008 - 08:47 AM EDT

"Once again iPhone rumors are floating in China... Why is China the place where these rumors start? Simple. Thousands of people are involved in building iPhone components and, those that have the means, know how to get inside information. Once it starts, the information spreads. These rumors are used by accessory manufacturers and agents in China to decide what they will produce, when they will start to manufacture it and when they should unload their old stock," iDealsChina reports.

"No more speculating. The new iPhone is a Nano Phone! We just got these images of a silicone case design by XSKN for the new Nano iPhone. This case is in production. We are not sure when they will release it on their site. The XSKN designs will give you an idea of the shape and size of the new Nano iPhone. We understand that a number of companies are producing cases as of last week," iDealsChina reports. "If you remember, before iPhone 3G was released, a number of companies including Griffin had advanced information of the size and shape of iPhone 3G. We understand that once one company starts making a mold their information is passed onto other mold companies or accessory companies through a China underground network."

iDealsChina reports, "It is the same height as the just released Nano but wider and thicker and with the same iPhone 3G contours. It has 3 sensors, camera, mirror screen but no 3G. Production will start on the 20th with 60,000 to 80,000/day pieces coming off the assembly line. Steve Jobs will be announcing it during the January MacWorld Show and you will find it in the stores shortly afterwards

Um... No.

Dec 15, 08 - 10:04 am Comment from: Hilken

No way. How will apps work on a smaller display? Devs would have been told about this a while ago. Unless you won't be able to install 3rd party apps on it?

Dec 15, 08 - 10:05 am Comment from: taxi

looks schnappy!

Dec 15, 08 - 10:07 am Comment from: Charlie

Why isn't this simply amazing information? Where is the surprise product?

Dec 15, 08 - 10:20 am Comment from: Wingsy

No 3G? Wonder what carrier will be handling this phone. Perhaps this phone isn't hard-wired to ATT and will appear across the board.

Dec 15, 08 - 10:23 am Comment from: R2

No 3G would be unacceptable. Even the cheapest midrange phones have 3G these days.

Please don't let it be true.

Dec 15, 08 - 10:24 am Comment from: BacMook

Is the screen Matte or Glossy? wink

Dec 15, 08 - 10:25 am Comment from: steve516

well, if the screen is proportionally smaller... it could work - but I doubt that Apple would do such a thing. IMO, if they do a nano iPhone (big if), then chances are the display will be far smaller, and not touch sensitive. But really, who needs a nano iPhone??? the original and 3G are small enough, and the price is correct. Perhaps a nano iPod Touch??? Nah.

I say highly unlikely...

Dec 15, 08 - 10:29 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

Without redesigning the interface and thus having two versions, the only way this works is if everything is just smaller, albeit with the same number of pixels just at a higher resolution. If that's the case using the thing will be a pain.

Dec 15, 08 - 10:37 am Comment from: Macfabulous

# BacMook - "Is the screen Matte or Glossy?"

...Who cares? As long as it´s glossy!!! cheese

Dec 15, 08 - 10:38 am Comment from: marc duchesne

No way. That's the reverse: they will announce the Mac Touch wink

Dec 15, 08 - 10:40 am Comment from: bioness

Talking shit again!

If anything, that'd be more like an iPod touch nano

Dec 15, 08 - 10:45 am Comment from: MacintoshSoftwareList.com

Does it have firewire?

Dec 15, 08 - 11:05 am Comment from: iPhony Andy

This time Chinese are ahead of Apple, they have the copies out before the new iPhones are even announced. We walked through electronics market in Shanghai today and spotted these. Luckily my buddy snapped couple of pics and put them up.

iPhone Air eh?

Dec 15, 08 - 11:07 am Comment from: My 3 Sense

This is as bogus as paid analyst Wu's iPhone nano claim that spiraled into the black hole of nothingness. I don't think the iPhone will get smaller ever, and unlikely that it will get bigger, even though I desire a 10" Macbook. I do think the processor/graphics, etc. is going to get pumped. Videoconferencing is on the horizon, but not until it is perfect. Landscape keyboard, cut and paste systemwide is ready now...yawn.
Id/Carmack type standards on apps and games that demand resources are going to be addressed before any major physical changes. It aint broke and don't need fixing, just some under the hood tweaks and no stutters in interface and games.

Dec 15, 08 - 11:13 am Comment from: edgeknight

1) That phone says Cingular instead of AT&T;on it.
2) Chinese knock-offs are possible source of rumor.
3) Home button is too small to be real.
4) As was stated earlier, this would change the dimensions of the UI screwing up a lot of apps.
5) More likely this is just an iPod nano redesign that just plays music/videos with no apps or wireless.

MW = probably.

Dec 15, 08 - 11:20 am Comment from: YoYo

I saw those iPhone minis too, didn't try out. The smaller iPhone makes sense in Asia, just need to find a smaller screen with the same pixel count. For people with baby fingers the mini would be perfect, and that's is most Asian girls.

A pink iPhone Air, wow, I've seen only aluminum and black.

Dec 15, 08 - 11:47 am Comment from: dg

as long as it has a new headphone jack configuration that is completely incompatible with the two existing configs.....count me in.

Dec 15, 08 - 11:51 am Comment from: useless needless

will it have a replaceable battery and harddirve or will steve continue to be a planetary rapist? Ipod and iphone have inbuilt obsolescence which is a crime against the limited resources on this planet. wake up psycho steve and smell the limited coffee we all have left...

Dec 15, 08 - 11:52 am Comment from: ElderNorm

Hey, just a thought.

Maybe its the iPhone Nano rip off of the iPhone china rip off of the..... you get it. Someone steals bits and pieces of technology, sells it to a China company and they make look-a-likes.

Sounds about right to me.

This rumor is nothing more than stock manipulation.

When asked about introducing new models to the iPhone lineup at the most recent conference call, Steve Jobs replied:

"Babe Ruth only had one home run, he just kept hitting it over and over."

Dec 15, 08 - 11:56 am Comment from: eMax

give me a break.....ill believe it when i see it...

Dec 15, 08 - 12:16 pm Comment from: @ useless needless

iPhone batteries are replaceable and recycled by Apple.

Coffee grows on bushes. No shortage there.

You are an idiot.

The above three facts are true. Just google them.

Dec 15, 08 - 12:23 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

A physically smaller screen does NOT necessarily mean fewer pixels, just SMALLER pixels (higher pixel density). DUH, people.

Maybe it's an iPod touch nano?

Then again, maybe it's all bullshit.

Stay tuned...

There will be an iPhone Nano. It will be cheaper, with fewer features and cost less (maybe nothing with a contract). To try to sell them to school kids, it will not have GPS, 3G, data (wifi only). Kids don't need that extra stuff. It will be a smaller iPod Touch with a phone and text messaging. $40 a month.

Plus, the iPhone price will drop to $99. And there will be a tablet so Apple will be going bigger and smaller and cheaper.

Dec 15, 08 - 01:16 pm Comment from: HD Boy

A lack of GPS and lower-priced plans for kids would be a fatal mistake for an iPhone nano. Parents MIGHT consider a purchase if: - Apple offers a "hardened" model designed for kids who are rough on phones.
- Carrier rate plans are lower (or discounted family plans are offered).
- GPS allows them to live track the whereabouts of their kids.
- 3G IS INCLUDED (for homework research).

My brother is a new Apple iPhone customer, but he won't purchase the current model for his kids. Instead, he's buying a $250, jail-broken (Verizon) LG Dare for use on MetroPCS, which has cheap monthly rate plans, but Web phones with lousy browsers. I'm nbot sure the LG Dare browser is any better though...

Dec 15, 08 - 01:20 pm Comment from: HD Boy

...Also, this simply could be an iPod Nano instead of an iPhone. With WiFI, maybe it could include VOIP phone capabilities (such as TruPhone)

Dec 15, 08 - 02:59 pm Comment from: currentinterest

GPS is not required for cell phone location, I used to have it for my kids long before GPS.

I also think an iPhone Nano that has access to the App store, email, and Safari via WiFi, iPod, text messaging (MMS would be nice), PDA stuff, camera, and a decent phone is all that is needed. A horizontal keyboard for texting and email would solve the size/keyboard problem.

Dec 15, 08 - 05:20 pm Comment from: Brau

It could also be a case for a Chinese knock-off ... but that wouldn't garner hits, would it.

Dec 15, 08 - 07:11 pm Comment from: Dan B

Whether the size or form of the iPhone changes or not, I have to believe we will have some “small yet big” surprises at MacWorld in January.

Consider the MacWorld 2009 teaser “Even the small talk will be big!” A Nano iPhone (low price due to no 3G and reduced storage) at full-size (current form factor) would be “big” and would fill a gap in India and greater Asia where many hundreds of millions of mobile users are pre-pay (no contract).

Dec 15, 08 - 08:16 pm Comment from: ken1w

> How will apps work on a smaller display? Devs would have been told about this a while ago.

How? The screen resolution can be same as the regular iPhone. This would be consistent, since the iPod nano has a smaller screen than an iPod classic, but they share the same resolution.

If there is anything removed, it will be the WiFi and GPS. It will still be an iPhone with Internet access without the WiFi. The GPS is a nice to have feature; the original iPhone did not have it either. It will probably still have a camera, since a camera seems to be an expectation on even cheap phones these days.

Dec 15, 08 - 08:45 pm Comment from: Jonk

@currentinterest

So... exactly the same as the iPhone except for GPS. I can see how that would reduce the cost.

Dec 15, 08 - 08:49 pm Comment from: Jonk

@ken1w
You can squeeze the same pixels into a smaller screen, but the human finger will stay the same. So touch interfaces designed for the larger screen will not be usable on this mythical nano.

Dec 15, 08 - 09:24 pm Comment from: mike

who cares about App compatibility, give me the Orange Screen of Death or give me....

....death?

Dec 15, 08 - 09:27 pm Comment from: mike

iPod touch nano?

eh, this branding is getting a little long in the tooth.. not to mention X-rated,,

Dec 16, 08 - 01:34 am Comment from: ken1w

@ Jonk

Based on the photo "evidence," it's only about 20% smaller.

> but the human finger will stay the same.

Really, my fingers are a lot bigger than some people I know, and a lot smaller than other people I know. The variance is a lot more than 20%.

Also, a 20% variance is a lot smaller than the variance in size between the physical keyboards of various smartphones (and the number pad of various regular phones).

Also, the iPod's click wheel varies in size from large on the full-size iPod to small for the iPod nano (to absolutely huge for the original iPods). The difference is size from smallest to largest is more than 50%.

I can go on... But in any case, there goes your argument... smile

Jan 03, 09 - 10:10 pm Comment from: nooneukno

i dont think so, it would at least need to be less wide, so it could have the same resolution to work with everything else already established
