“Apple Computer plans to update both its MacBook and MacBook Pro lines of Intel notebook computers in time for the holiday shopping season, but may take some time before it does so, AppleInsider has learned,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.
“People familiar with the matter say development of Core 2 Duo versions of all three models — the 13-inch MacBook, 15-inch MacBook Pro and 17-inch MacBook Pro — are now complete and all that’s left is for Apple marketing to pull the trigger,” Jade reports.
Jade reports, “But those same people indicate that precise launch dates for the respective models remain fluid and Apple customers should expect the updates to arrive anytime between now and the time Thanksgiving rolls around in late November.”
“Last week, Credit Suisse analyst Robert Semple told clients that checks in Asia revealed MacBook shipments were tracking at approximately 200,000 units ahead of his initial 580,000 unit estimate for the company’s September quarter. Despite these impressive figures, Apple is still struggling to to meet overall demand for the notebooks as a result of the recent the educational and back-to-school buying seasons,” Jade reports. “Semple revised his estimates for the quarter to 775,000 MacBooks plus some 250,000 MacBook Pro systems, bringing his combined notebook estimate to over 1 million units.”

Apple isn’t announcing because they need to build up a supply. Intel allocated them 500 Core 2 Duo chips but that won’t help when they need 500,000

Shouldn’t that be Because of instead of “Despite of”?
Updating both? Not that it isn’t welcomed, but why don’t they leave the MacBook back for a bit and cut the price instead? Those Core 2 Duo chips have been reported to be in short supply, save them for the Pro and you can build more of each.
BTW: anybody got a spare grand and change so I can get my own non-Pro MacBook?

Still waiting for Apple to add an Express card slot to the Macbooks – why this is not already there makes no sense to me. I guess they want force people to buy MacBook pros if they want to add a wireless card from their cell phone carrier.
Intel wants to leave the old Core Duo “Yonah” chips behind as it transitions to the Core 2 chips. So Apple’s switching the MacBook Pro and the MacBook to the latter chip architecture is a given. But Apple will not cut its own throat and switch before it has adequate supply.
The next quarterly report information will blow the lid off any remaining doubt about Apple’s market share gains — mid October, we will know for sure then.

In the US, the holiday buying season starts with the Friday after our Thanksgiving Day, which is the fourth Thursday in November and lasts until Christmas Eve. For a new (or updated) item to be a factor in this season, it would have to be announced in time for people to decide to buy it and available in quantity prior to that Friday (generally called Black Friday, since many retail businesses only start operating at a profit during the holiday season, or so it’s said. I’m not sure how much of this is fact at this time and how much is FUD that has become “conventional wisdom”). So any meaningful announcement would have to come in the next six or so weeks.
FWIW, that’s the US Holiday Buying Season, in one paragraph.
When they come out, in goers my order for a 17 inch.

Argh! I just bought my MacBook last week. I’m using it right now. I knew this was going to happen, and I tried to wait, but I couldn’t hold out any longer. Oh well.
I ordered my MBP 15″ right after MacExpo because Steve Jobs didn’t announce Merom upgrades, but cancelled my order after the latest rumors about Apples Photokina announcment. My PB G4 is draving it’s lasts breaths. I hope that Merom Updates will be announced at last.

I think only MacBook Pro will be.
MacBooks are being sold really well, there is no real need yet.
I predict that there is going to be a real difference from now on, between Pro and cheap laptops.

Miguel they cant use the same old setup as before, the mac books and pros both have to compete against the xp based machines in order to drive market share. Pros can have faster processors, but the mac books still need regular upgrades. People need to get used to the idea that once you take a computer out of the box it becomes obsolete. But that doesnt mean it wont do exactly what you bought it for. And all this coming from the guy waiting for the upgrade to buy. I need one for college next year and im holding out till revision 2.

Gee if Apple keeps innovating at this rate they’ll never be more than 3-6 months behind Dell and HP with releases of new Intel technology.
