RUMOR: Apple’s iTunes App Store for iPhone and iPod touch to get ‘premium’ section
Monday, March 16, 2009 - 09:25 AM EDT

"As Apple gets ready to preview its new software developers' kit and an updated iPhone operating system next week, there could be some changes to the company's App Store too," Priya Ganapati blogs for Wired.

"We're hearing rumors that Apple could introduce a 'premium' section in the store, in order to sell more expensive third-party programs," Ganapati reports. "The premium section would largely be focused on games, giving game makers a channel to offer more in-depth (and pricier) titles without getting lost in the clutter of free and $1 apps."

"This 'velvet rope' section of Apple's store could feature software programs that cost $20 or more, making it friendlier to publishers whose products are too complicated to be created in one developer's spare time. That change would make the App Store more friendly to game publishers, as well as enterprise software companies such as SAP," Ganapati reports.

Not many apps I will pay $20 plus for...

I would if they were ridiculously better & more advanced than the cheap flimsy apps that sell for free or $1.

So? your point is.....?

I think this has to happen eventually, even if it's not right now. If the iPhone/iPod Touch is to be taken seriously as a gaming device, there have to be some really top notch games available. Not to say that there aren't some really nice games now, there are, and I own a few. But at some point there has to be more. We have to constantly keep in mind that the App Store is still just getting it's feet wet. I'm so curious to see how it will look in another year or another five years.

The market should take care of itself in this regard, no premium section is needed. Good products will justify themselves; creating a separate section will not change market demand. Prices naturally adjust to what people are willing to pay...

I think this is a great idea. I have paid $20 for many applications throughout time for palm, WinMo and BB. I would like to see a section that gets me to the better apps immediately vs looking through the useless fodder.

To all those who say they will never spend $20 on an app. I wonder how many are windows sufferers that gladly pay to have virus protection on their lump?

I always find there is this ridiculous double standard when it comes to Apple. Case in point is all the tools complaining that you need to have a verification chip for an ipod shuffle. It makes perfect sense since the essence of using the shuffle is the remote on the headphones. If you don't like it simply by a MP3 lump and use with any headphones you like.

There are already some high priced apps on the store so organizing them by price is a realistic idea. Not sure about the $20 limit though...Given Apple's predeliction for being just a little higher than other products I'd say the top price will be $24.99 for a range of superior games...If that happens you WILL see more high end games appear on the platform though the transition may be slower than you think.

this is old news/rumors

Mar 16, 09 - 10:18 am Comment from: Unlock It From AT&T;

I would gladly pay a fair price for a legally unlocked phone. I WILL NOT do business with AT&T;- period. Besides, their crappy network is dropping calls and giving no service all over the South-by-SouthWest fest in Austin, Texas.

BTW- Austin is almost in San Antonio based AT&T;'s back yard.

@ Unlock
Give it a rest, huh? Apple has a 5 year contract with ATT. We've heard 2 years of ATT haters bemoaning the situation on every iPhone story. Bulletin: nothing is going to change for another 3 years.

Mar 16, 09 - 11:49 am Comment from: Predrag

And no amount of crying will change it either. Reality remains that AT&T is (soon to be again) largest US carrier. Apple wanted an exclusive partner for many reasons (which are obvious to everyone here) and they got one in AT&T. Therefore, T-Mobile won't even be a consideration and no unlocked phone (iPhone or any other) will ever work on Verizon (GSM vs. CDMA). You may feel free to continue to complain, if that makes you feel better; it won't change anything; it just may annoy some readers here.

Premium section is just another word for special advertising. Developers pay a bit extra to Apple, set their app price to $20 or higher, and get a bit of preferential treatment. Users find it easier to navigate through higher-quality (presumably) apps, Apple cashes in a little bit, everyone benefits (except for the small developer, who is still stuck in the sea of other competitors).

Mar 16, 09 - 05:54 pm Comment from: kat

I would be more happy if ATT lowered prices for basic services.

Spark:

So what if people describe their frustration with ATT? If Apple signed an contract with ATT excluding all other service providers until 2012 then people have a perfect right to complain for lack of choice. Besides, have you never complained about anything? I didn't think so.
