RUMOR: Apple’s net-gen iPhone will have 3G, no GPS, same 2.0MP camera
Wednesday, June 04, 2008 - 02:46 PM EST

"The next major revision of the iPhone, expected during this year's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, could be a major disappointment for those who were expecting more than 3G connectivity on this new model," Alexandros Roussos reports for MacScoop.

"Sources who can be trusted told MacScoop that the next iPhone will of course have 3G connectivity, but not much more, as it will lack built-in GPS chip and include the same old 2Mpixel digital camera," Roussos reports.

"Unless there is a second super-secret higher-end model, the two probably most requested features made by current and potential iPhone customers won't come as soon as expected," Roussos reports.

I actually find this more believable than the all the pie in the sky updates PLUS 22% thinner with longer battery life.

Jun 04, 08 - 01:51 pm Comment from: ProtoDAda

heretic!

Jun 04, 08 - 01:52 pm Comment from: Angelus520

Man, that bites about the camera since the current one pretty much sucks! My old Nokia had a decent camera with flash even and that was from 2005. The iPhone camera bites if you're taking pictures in a club or whatever, which is where one would often use a camera. We're not all shooting daytime nature pics. Guess we'll see next week.

Jun 04, 08 - 01:52 pm Comment from: Lladnar

Sheesh. What a kill-joy! That's bound to have a negative impact on the stock price leading up to Steve's next big iPhone announcement.

Jun 04, 08 - 01:53 pm Comment from: Greg M

No GPS then my current iPhone will be just fine for another year or longer. After all, new software and 3rd party software will make mine seem new anyways!

Jun 04, 08 - 01:54 pm Comment from: Aldarion

How about the ABILITY to send and receive MMS???
And NO... EMAILING pictures is NOT the same or a good substitute.

Jun 04, 08 - 01:56 pm Comment from: Questioning

I know that Apple is secretive, but if the only update yet to be mentioned is 3G, then there will be huge disappointment. The 3G addition should be handled with just a press release. Nothing to get to excited about. If you want $ in the shorthand before a large drop then sell some stock before Monday. (If this is all they have as unannounced upgrades.)

Jun 04, 08 - 01:56 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

sounds reasonable to me.
first apple doesn't care that much about features (2 MP is good enough they think), second, they don't sacrifice battery-life for an gps-chip if triangulation is good enough for most instances. (they would argue). would be disappointing though. prepare fpr after macworld/wwdc depression.

Jun 04, 08 - 01:57 pm Comment from: My dear boy - SHUTUP!

Another stupid rumour, and a dull one at that.

Yeah, its the same phone, exactly, but its a bit faster. I dont think so.
If that was the case, why not simply bring it out now?

Apple is preparing an event, for frick's sake - its going to have a bigger camera, GPS options, new software, better battery life, different case, video ability, video phone is possible, more than one version ( a high end and a lower end) - why wouldnt it?

People are going NUTS for this phone - and Apple is just going to bring out the same one?

NO, sorry, lousy rumour.

Jun 04, 08 - 01:59 pm Comment from: IKON

But it will have a G5 processor.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:01 pm Comment from: KenC

Why do people read rumors and react like they're true?

Jun 04, 08 - 02:02 pm Comment from: Lord Byron

Aldarion

you can send photos as MMS through email.

Every carrier has a "email" address setup for MMS. I just add that address to my contacts for people i want to send photos that way. So can send a pic to my friend on tmobile who has a razr this way and he will receive it as MMS.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:03 pm Comment from: R2

Please tell me I can at least use the landscape keyboard in other applications outside Safari.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:03 pm Comment from: iPhone guy with a chip on both shoulders

If you read the article, you find that the jackass BACKTRACKS further on in the article and says that maybe there will be all these new things, but his 'trusted sources' (his Mom) didnt want to say anything more.

What a pile of garbage.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:04 pm Comment from: Bill in Providence

I find this hard to believe, just as the I do the 20% rumor. I think Jobs wants to significantly boost sales, that GPS, second video chat camera, and higher resolution would not break the engineering bank. If the hardware upgrade only consists of 3G & more storage, I'll do the unthinkable and stick with the fabulous iPhone that I got.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:06 pm Comment from: qka

The most sensible rumor to date.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Mark

I sometimes wonder if the rumors that are too good to be true are put their by competitors and anti-apple people so that when the new product is released, there is much disappointment.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:07 pm Comment from: Dave from Milan

Actually I have nothing to say - I just wanted to be 'Dave from Milan'.

Feels good. Now I know how 'Ralph from Berlin' feels.

Very cool.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:14 pm Comment from: NeverFade

I think that this is very doubtful.

iPhone has been out for a year, and within that time, all's Apple was able to do was to come out with 3G as opposed to Edge? Doubt it very much.

Apple knows that they have to keep on pushing and pushing. I call BS.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:18 pm Comment from: Turbine

I think we'll see:

3G
no GPS (perhaps external add on, or a car kit)
Slightly thinner
Better Battery Life
3.0 MP Camera, One on Front and Back

Jun 04, 08 - 02:20 pm Comment from: ajksddf

the what about all of the gps and geotagging references?
they wouldnt be there for the 3rd gen iphone yet
apples going to pull something big out of its sleeve

Jun 04, 08 - 02:24 pm Comment from: MikeR

Who cares. Wait until Monday and then you can be happy or sad based upon Steve's address to the faithful.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:24 pm Comment from: steve516

Who knows, it is all rumor anyhow grin

I personally think:
3G / 3.5G
Dual camera (video chat front camera 2mp/photo 5mp rear)
Same basic design - Apple is know for upgrading features and maintaining the design - look at all their other computers.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:24 pm Comment from: Yours Smugly

Good. GPS on a cell phone is a gimmick. The camera is also good enough. It's no meant to replace a real camera anyway.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:26 pm Comment from: CYxodus

I think that the photos on http://www.weiphone.com/thread-105920-1-2.html### are real and the iPhone 2 will at least have video chat.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:37 pm Comment from: Ferf Muckmeyer

There needs to be something more than just 3G. I was ready to upgrade, and if this turns out to be true, I'll spend my money on something else.

But I find this a bit hard to believe. Could care less about the camera. GPS would be cool. But I'll bet there are some secret features that have yet to be revealed.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:40 pm Comment from: yebot

So should I buy a Garmin or a TomTom?

Jun 04, 08 - 02:46 pm Comment from: OldMacFan

Why does anyone need more than a 2MP camera on a phone?

I have a Razr and the camera sucks.

I love the camera on the present iPhone. It is the only camera on a phone I have ever liked.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:48 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

""Unless there is a second super-secret higher-end model"

^ Remember this.

Jun 04, 08 - 02:51 pm Comment from: Total BS

Get real people! So Jobs introduced this thing 18 months ago. Do you really think that in 18 months time all they added was 3G. Total bullsh*t! I have just as much ability to predict as the analysts and I say:

- GPS
- MMS & SMS forward
- Cut & Paste
- Email bulk delete
- 3 MP camera
- To Do sync

Jun 04, 08 - 02:57 pm Comment from: jackspratt

i like the camera on my iPhone...for use in a pinch, or when i want to take a quick snap of something and email it right there. for a phone camera, it works pretty well.

for everything else, i ponied up for a real digital camera. very happy with my Canon A560.

Jun 04, 08 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Gman

This indeeds seems more believable...As a matter of fact, this is what I felt iPhone 2 will be....my current iPhone will get a major revamp with software v. 2 and the App store.

3G iPhone? = iPassNothanks.

Jun 04, 08 - 03:09 pm Comment from: AnGeMiiMa

There's a rumor going on that the new model also has a rectal thermometer....

Jun 04, 08 - 03:22 pm Comment from: kwalos

While we wait for Steve, with nothing but expectations, let rumours be our diet.
Let's be warned, rumourmongers are peddlers of crap.

Jun 04, 08 - 03:31 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

I thought the biggest feature of iPhone 2.0 was the third-party software support, which we already know about.

Jun 04, 08 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

AnGeMiiMa:
Isn't that what gerbils are for?

Jun 04, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: QMan

There is only one thing that is 100% guaranteed, and that is disappointment.

No matter what they include it will not have everything that people want

Jun 04, 08 - 04:13 pm Comment from: MMS Monkey

Aldarion: YES!!! I know that is the one thing that I despise about my iPhone - no MMS support. Seriously... how hard is it to support MMS? The specs are on the freaking web!!!

Jun 04, 08 - 04:21 pm Comment from: ApplePi

iPhone Nano = 3G GPS, same Camera = $200
iPhone = GPS + New Camera + 3G = $300

Jun 04, 08 - 04:25 pm Comment from: MacDaddy

"On the same note... Micro$ucks announced their new Zune coming out with the same features as before. The only difference with the previous version is that it can now connect to Windows 95 and 3.1.x."

Try to get upset and sad about this one!

Jun 04, 08 - 04:28 pm Comment from: bizlaw

People, the main points of the new iPhone are going to be 3G and the new software. Apple is working extremely hard at completing the iPhone SDK, and that is going to be the "new features" which wow people.

The fact is, the iPhone is a handheld computer, and it's the OS which makes the iPhone so powerful (not an increase in camera ability-that's what digital cameras are for).

I doubt you'll see Apple providing iChat capabilities, especially because most of the US doesn't have 3G access and AT&T;isn't sure how their network will hold up under the increased iPhone usage for surfing, etc., let alone iChatting. Even if the physical capabilities were there, Apple could hold back on iChat/IM features simply out of respect/request for AT&T;.

Jun 04, 08 - 04:55 pm Comment from: R

I would rather a GPS car kit.

Jun 04, 08 - 04:58 pm Comment from: @bizlaw

ichat, or rather the lack of, is the reason i haven't bought an iphone yet

Jun 04, 08 - 05:33 pm Comment from: Danno Bonano

At first I thought that from TomTom rumors a year ago, that TomTom would make 3rd party software that uses a new GPS chip in the iPhone.

Then I switched to thinking that Google Maps is pretty integrated and why would Apple distance themselves from that?

In the end: No GPS this version. Triangulation will have to do. Location aware tech like geo-tagging will use the triangulation.

Video conferencing would be nice but I don't see that either. What I do see is some great software additions to the iPhone: iChat (no video), Uploading photos to .Mac (MobileMe) Web Galleries. Accessing iTunes music library from home using MobileMe (Back to My Mac), TV/Movie streaming.

3G and the App Store is going to rip a new hole in the mobile world. However, recent rumors surrounding Snow Leopard leads me to believe multi-touch technology will be coming to the Mac in January along with the oft rumored Tablet Mac. That would be a whole year ahead of MS and their Windows 7 Touch-me-in-places-I-can't-speak-about OS release. Well, their initial release date which will be moved back to 2012.

The crappy part of all this hype is that people are gonna expect the sun, moon, and stars and not realize that by just getting the sun and moon, we have a device years ahead of the competition.

Jun 04, 08 - 05:45 pm Comment from: @bizlaw

Perhaps Apple won't release iChat, but I have little doubt that there will be plenty of 3rd party apps that will do just fine for 2.0.

Jun 04, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: dada

maybe it's about the iPhone nano... remember there'll be 2 models of iPhones?

Jun 04, 08 - 06:51 pm Comment from: catseye

If they are serious about the Japanese market then the iPhone better include at least a 3 MP camera. Most of the latest models have 5 MP. People here love to use their cell phone cameras.

Jun 04, 08 - 08:23 pm Comment from: alansky

Camera phones are fun to use for spontaneous snaps, but it is interesting to see how the collective aesthetic standards of the whole society are lowered as inventions like camera phones and YouTube gain in popularity. It is especially ironic that the pixelated mess that typically passes for a "video" on YouTube can now be viewed from the comfort of your living room on a state-of-the-art, wide-screen HD tv. What's the point? YouTube videos can be entertaining when viewed on the iPhone, though,

Right. A truly ground-breaking product like the iPhone is a rare commodity in a market that celebrates mediocrity (because that's where the greatest profits are). Personally, I feel fortunate to have the privilege of owning one. Whining about the iPhone's shortcomings is for small, adolescent minds.
