RUMOR: Apple’s next-gen iPhone to feature GPS, slightly thicker design
Friday, April 25, 2008 - 06:14 PM EST

"So we've got it on authority that the second-gen iPhone is already well into testing, and numerous units are floating around in super secret pockets. A trusted source got a chance to check one out, here's what we've heard," Ryan Block reports for Engadget.

"The first thing people will notice: the 2nd gen iPhone will be about the same size and shape as the first gen.," Block reports. "It will, of course, have 3G. And proper GPS!"

"The phone itself will be slightly thicker than the first gen device," Block reports.

Believes it when i sees it...

Apr 25, 08 - 05:23 pm Comment from: Peter

I heard it will be snappier...

Apr 25, 08 - 05:30 pm Comment from: flabby phone

iPhone, thicker, not thinner, fatter, not svelte. plump, portly, paunchy. Well, no MBA owners will buy one.

Apr 25, 08 - 06:05 pm Comment from: I wish

Pretty cool. If only I could afford it. :/

Apr 25, 08 - 06:18 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

Thicker. That makes total sense.

If there's one thing that Apple always does, it's make the next in each product line fatter.

Think of all the many examples . . . .

. . . still thinking . . . . . .

Uh . . . Yeah.

Apr 25, 08 - 06:19 pm Comment from: Jay-Z

surprising to hear that it is thicker - i didn't buy a case for mine because i felt it made it too thick. i guess we will see when it is out.

Apr 25, 08 - 06:25 pm Comment from: Jaxson

@MidWest Mac

While I agree with you overall, I actually own an example - the first 40gig iPod was almost twice as thick as the 20gig gen 2 I had before it.

That said, I doubt the article.

I'm just saying...

Apr 25, 08 - 06:27 pm Comment from: NeonRed

By slightly thicker they mean
0.06 mm
two sheets of 20# bond paper
they just need to fit 3 Gs in instead of 2 and a half

Apr 25, 08 - 06:31 pm Comment from: madz abiera

I was holding out until the 2nd gen. iphone will come out hoping that it would be thinner and sexier. The rumor just dashed my hope.

Apr 25, 08 - 06:35 pm Comment from: new iphone ad

"Plump up the volume!"

Apr 25, 08 - 06:36 pm Comment from: DogGone

Apparently it was a feature request from 50 % of customers.

Apr 25, 08 - 06:47 pm Comment from: Jubei

@NeonRed

Where did you see that 0.06 number? It's not on the site link or at ipodobserver.

Apr 25, 08 - 07:19 pm Comment from: Joe

I agree, if anything it would be the same or thinner
I highly doubt it will be thicker. I dont think they would bother with any gps chip if it would force a thicker iphone.

Apple is ALL about thinner, they have seen that Stephen King movie.

Apr 25, 08 - 07:24 pm Comment from: no-no

The Engadget story is correct.

Apr 25, 08 - 07:32 pm Comment from: new iphone ad

NeonRed pulled the 0.06 mm number out of his ass.

Apr 25, 08 - 07:41 pm Comment from: NeonRed

@Jubel & @new iphone ad

i like to think i had a vision...
But, yes, you're right i have no inside scoop.
i thought the 2G- 3G reason would be light enough
after all just how thick is a G

Apr 25, 08 - 07:55 pm Comment from: GPS

I know a friend inside Hong Hai Precision Industry who claimed there will be GPS on board, so this is really nothing new.

Apr 25, 08 - 08:02 pm Comment from: Jubei

@GPS

I have a friend whose cousins 2nd cousin twice removed related to his half sister who's friend is adopted by their 3rd cousins that are twins and related to their 4th cousin eight times removed.... wink

Apr 25, 08 - 08:06 pm Comment from: Knight

I thought that people didn't like the plastic feel. and most consumers (including me) wants a removable battery its a phone you need that feature. I hope that it isn't too much thicker. GPS?? Why would apple put it in they already have that in the iphone with the "Locate Me" (i know it uses cellar and Wifi spots), Then again that could have been to bridge the wait for the 2nd Gen iPhone. We will just have to wait If it has GPS then it will be cool, as it would work in the middle of no were, were there is no wifi or cellar signals. Cant wait to see it, Knowing apple it will be great..... (I Hope)

Apr 25, 08 - 08:28 pm Comment from: fool_me_once

Can't wait to see one. Will wait to buy one....at least until the $200 price cut.

Apr 25, 08 - 08:41 pm Comment from: Mr. Obvious

Sources here say the next-gen iPhone will be just like the current one, only different.

Can I have a cookie now?

Apr 25, 08 - 09:14 pm Comment from: ragarcia

MDN,
Congrats on the mobile version. Very nice!!

Apr 25, 08 - 09:28 pm Comment from: nicleT

As long as it's not thicker than my Treo 650, I'll switch!

Apr 25, 08 - 09:55 pm Comment from: Roy W.

Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington have been seen with it!!!!

Apr 25, 08 - 09:59 pm Comment from: Walter Chillum

I won't be buying one because in Australia the phone plans for mobiles (cells) are too expensive or, if you buy the phone it's just too costly. Frankly the thought of paying $AU30 - 40 per month is just a little bit too rich for my taste. Don't get me wrong, iphones will sell in Australia, but I won't be one of the buyers.

Apr 25, 08 - 10:22 pm Comment from: tt

bigger? the only way it will be bigger is if they make a bigger screen.... asshats.

MDN magic word: degree

as in, I have a degree in asshatology.

Apr 25, 08 - 10:22 pm Comment from: R2

They squeezed 32gb into the iPod touch at the same thickness. Some of the world's thinnest phones made by the likes of Samsung and Toshiba have 3G (not to mention removable batteries). I don't see why Apple couldn't make the next iPhone thinner, if not keep it at the very same thickness. They are the masters of miniaturization.

Apr 25, 08 - 10:35 pm Comment from: bobchr

@ Knight what the hell are you doing touching the battery, you're not gonna share it between devices are you??? Most phones on the market have removable batteries and contacts that build resistanct over time. This retards full charging and discharging over many cycles, not to mention as soon as you drop the damn things the battery door pops open and out pops the battery. A soldered non-removable battery is more reliable easier to manufacture and lasts way longer.

Apr 25, 08 - 11:34 pm Comment from: ron

Knight, or is that Nite?

"were there is no wifi or cellar signals."

Come out of the cellar and you may find wi-fi WHERE it is. You might even get cellular sigganells.

Apr 25, 08 - 11:40 pm Comment from: Crabs

BS, that's a case for the current iPhone they're selling in Hong Kong

Poster Clark on the Engadget comments is a legend, his last post was brilliant.

Apr 26, 08 - 02:32 am Comment from: @MacFanBoys

Last year you kept chanting: we don't need 3G, we dont need GPS, who needs it yada yada yada..

Now..even with just a rumour you are already drooling. I bet this "we dont need a good camera in our mobile phones, buy a real camera .." is just crappy talk as well until iPhone has it, right? wink

Apr 26, 08 - 04:12 am Comment from: Macaday

@ SKY LARK,

I think you meant 'Clak' not Clark. I just read his dismembering of the WinMobile fanboys there - as you say he is a bit of a legend!

Can't believe there is anyone left who can espouse Windows in any shape or form..let alone its appalling mobile version.

Apr 26, 08 - 07:00 am Comment from: Yours Smugly

A new Apple product that is thicker than its predecessor? I'll believe it when I see it.

GPS? A useless feature creep geek thing that most people don't use and don't need with a phone. Google Maps is good enough for personal navigation. If you really need a GPS device, you buy a real one for your car.

Apr 26, 08 - 07:11 am Comment from: R

These rumors are a shot in the dark-- it's what some people expect. My guess is that the new iPhone will have some changes, but nothing all that radical. But, it's just a guess. It would seem weird to me to release the apps store at the same time as a new phone that has functionality that won't be accessible. If the phone has GPS and programs only access the google location feature, it's like having a race car with a hamster wheel engine. Not Apple's style.

I would bet new design, sleeker. Improved power management, if that's possible. 3G. Bigger memory, maybe slightly improved processors, though we'd probably notice no real difference in functionality. And the apps store, the biggest new feature of all.

Apr 26, 08 - 08:46 am Comment from: dab

this is the first time i can actually say I will be happy with the first gen. Im buying one in may!

Apr 26, 08 - 09:20 am Comment from: jomo2000

I wouldn't assume that the chip components drive thickness. It's rather for increased battery capacity, which both GPS and 3G require.

Dark Helmet: Before you die there is something you should know about us, Lone Star.
Lone Starr: What?

Dark Helmet: Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become.

and once again, note the posts from "reality check" the only poster whose posts have no connection to reality.....

Apr 26, 08 - 01:15 pm Comment from: dd

Can I be the annoying guy who asks, "Yes, but can anyone tell me when this will be released?"

Every forum has at least 1 thread started by some moron who doesn't realize that nobody knows.

Apr 26, 08 - 04:47 pm Comment from: ron

"iPhone to feature GPS, slightly thicker design"

Why not? Everything else in the USA is getting thicker. The Barbra Streisand out of Washington, the man-made global warming scam,
the populations' waistlines, the public schoolkids, etc..

Apr 26, 08 - 05:50 pm Comment from: iDon't

It need to be larger by about 1 inch on all sides.

Apr 26, 08 - 08:35 pm Comment from: Spiritual Spriteness

I don't believe any of this...if Apple is shipping a new iPhone, then they have had this concept in the works since before the first one was released. Steve Jobs is not going to just change a case design in order to add anything, including battery life.
I promise Apple had version 2 and probably version 3 in mind before they released version 1 of the iPhone.
Get ready for your self-rumored expectation disappointment when you find
out that there wil be no GPS internally for the iPhone 2...instead, there may be numerous external GPS plug-ons!
Did Apple ever put a simple FM receiver in the iPod...no...instead they sell an external radio/headphone unit. The same applies for GPS, folks. If they make a thicker iPhone, then I will film myself running around my house backwards in pink underwear and send everyone the link. Ain't gonna get thicker!

Apr 27, 08 - 07:41 am Comment from: Ampar

"It need to be larger by about 1 inch on all sides."

That's what she said.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:55 pm Comment from: jtech

I would gladly buy the new iphone if I could play my music through a Blue tooth headset. Oh and Ron you are a fucking tool. I cant believe that anyone who believes that Global Warming is a man made scam would be progressive enough to have an iphone or any other Apple product.
