RUMOR: Apple’s next-gen iPhone to launch at WWDC 2008, starting at $399

Apple’s next-gen iPhone “will launch at WWDC 2008, in two or possible three different configurations, and prices starting at US$399. There are a few other tweaks, which, however, may be less than you would expect from a next-gen iPhone,” Richard Felton reports for TG Daily.

“Our sources told us that there will be at least two models, one with 8 GB and one with 16 GB memory, priced at $399 and $499, respectively. This pricing structure is identical to current iPhones There is a chance that we could see a 32 GB version for $599, but we were not able to receive a confirmation for this claim,” Felton reports.

“Apple is also now working in tic-tock mode between iPhone and iPod Touch. iPod touch should always have a twice the capacity model for the same price as iPhone,” Felton reports.

  1. Very doubtful. The iPhone is a consumer level product. WWDC is a developers conference.

Once rumors like this get some traction, the media starts to expect them to come true and is throughly disappointed when it doesn’t.

An update to the iPhone will IMHO, have an event on it’s own, bringing in the media, not developers

  2. on the other hand, they are releasing a developer kit for the iPhone, why not release the new phone to developers too.

….i only say this to point out that armchair quarterbacking Steve is generally a fools errand. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  3. WWDC should be about Mac OS X 10.6, not the iPhone. There will probably be some iPhone SDK attention, but the Mac will remain the focus. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point there were some iPhone mini-developers’ conference.

I would also expect capacity of the iPhone to get a boost at this point, as well.

  4. @Investor

WWDC is not about consumer or pro level hardware, it is about products that apply to developers.. Since the iPhone SDK is being released around the same time, it makes perfect sense for the next generation iPhone to be launched at the event.

There are lots of developers interested in developing for the iPhone.

  5. Mr. Reeee

Check the WWDC Web site and the sessions that are planned. It will be iPhone oriented. 10.6 is not a priority for now. Nest year for sure.

The iPhone is the next-gen platform for Apple and will generate at least 50% of the revenue by 2012.

Also, Apple will develop more an more real applications and solutions like Wiki, Podcast Producer, iCal, Time Machine, … Yes the OS will evolve but the future is heading toward out-of-the box solutions.

When you add the iPhone platform and specialized apps and solutions integrated with Xserve and OS X (and potential Xserve mini for home), then you have exceptional ecosystem that leave competition in the dust.

  6. That is such a hack article written by a hack author trying to jump into the Apple rumor mill.

This guys says things like “Our sources told us” and “we are told”…. by whom? The guy in the next cubicle?

Gimme a break. This guy is a hack. All of us who have been following Apple for years know that WWDC is the boring event of the year.

  7. Don’t count on it. In light of Microsoft’s revolutionary advances with Windows Mobile Apple is going to scrap the disastrous I-Phone experiment altogether. Better get out now before the I-Phone really stinks up the place.

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  8. @ Zune Juice

Speaking of stinking up the place….

Here in Australia there is a saying about people we love to hate – of the which you just may qualify – but I do love your sarcasm….

He hangs around like a bad smell…. kindof like a Zune.

    Your Stink. My Hurl. ™

As for the prognostications about the next generation iPhone – I am patiently waiting for the intro of the G3 or G3.5 for Australia. RUMOUR has it that it will be unlocked. Good reason for the rumour – it is the Law in Australia. BUT the famed iPhone What Makes It So Special features could be tied to a single telco…. we can only hope it is not Telstra!!!

    Cheers!

“Jobs says Apple’s current OS update schedule to continue”
    (Monday, Oct. 22 2007)

“Steve Jobs spoke with the New York Times about Leopard, saying that this latest release of OS X would form the basis for another cycle of continuous operating system upgrades, which could last as long as a decade.

“I’m quite pleased with the pace of new operating systems every 12 to 18 months for the foreseeable future,” said Jobs. “We’ve put out major releases on the average of one a year, and it’s given us the ability to polish and polish and improve and improve.”

This is, of course, in stark contrast to Microsoft’s Windows, which only has new releases every several years.”

Found this quite interesting to read, I love the iphone but it makes some fair points, I live in the UK and no-one I know owns an iphone, why? a combination of reasons, from a phone view, 3G is important in this country as well as mms and a decent camera with flash also business model wise, a large number of phones are free initially as they are subsidised by the operator (I could even get a N95 for free for example) and the other issue i have pointed out to me is the contract for the iphone in this country is poor value (although has been improved recently) people here want to change their phones annually and they want more bundled texts (particularly) than 02 offer them. Texting (sms) is massive in this country, im led to believe this isnt so much the case in the US?.

Im not iphone bashing at all, i love apple and its innovative nature, im just explaining why maybe it hasnt quite taken off in Europe yet and providing some balance to the opinions on this website (devils advocate if you will)

  12. Macworld is a personal computer conference and it has been used to publicize the release of telephones, DVR’s and NAS devices. Why shouldn’t WWDC be used to publicize telephones?

    Just my $0.02

  13. I would jump all over a 32 GB iPhone for $599. A 64 GB model for $799 would be even better (of course, I wouldn’t complain if it were cheaper.) ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

A 64 GB model would allow me to replace my current 60 GB iPod, and leave an extra 4 GB for iPhone apps. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  14. my compatriate has it right about the lack of success of the 1st generation iphone in this country, who would pay £269 (approx $500) for the 8gb or £329 (approx $650) for a 16gb edge based iphone when you can get a 3g based N95 for free for not only the same per month contract price as the iphone but with more bundled free minutes and texts.

This isnt an anti apple post, just a common sense decision.

On a side note, how did the richest nation in the world end up so far behind with regard to mobile phone technology??? full 3g access was rolled out here about 3 years ago.

  15. @ Another UK guy

Trust me, we’re all trying to figure that out here too. I’m fairly disgusted by it, to tell the truth.

But, in regards the the 3G N95, they tested it, and the N95 on 3G is slower than the iPhone on EDGE. Now if EDGE isn’t commonly available in the UK, then ok, that makes sense why you’d go for the N95

    @Gareth in the UK

Actually, texting is huge in the US. I remember the day when my dad first started texting, freaked me out. But everyone does it. The reason the iPhone isn’t huge on texting: Steve Jobs hates it. He thinks it’s another way for the cell providers to gouge their customers (e.g., I pay 39.99/month for 300 mins plus unlimited to my 5, I pay 15.00/month for texting…seem a little out of proportion to you?)

My guess is that the iPhone will eventually have better texting plans, but for now, I think the Steve is trying to push people towards email, and away from texting. Cuz after all, if everyone has an iPhone, why would you need texting? You can just email for free, rather than paying out the nose for texing.

And as far as the large amounts of open wifi…I wish. You can go to Starbucks (or pretty much any coffee shop), or if you’re a college student, pretty much all college campuses have free wifi. Beyond that, yes, it’s getting more common, but it’s still pretty scarce here. The reason we can “live” with EDGE is because 3G is even more scarce than wifi.

  16. Hi, i should point out again im not anti apple, for various reasons technology and price wise the iphone isnt a compelling offer here yet, i hope soon it will be.

We do have edge commonly available, and i have used an iphone, iphones with edge are certainly a lot slower than my 3.5g sony ericsson k850i by a long long way, the problem is phones with such speed are commonplace here and it makes the iphone unattractive by comparison, add the fact you have to pay for an iphone and have to take a long contract with few included minutes and texts and you can see why they arent selling so well here.

  17. Yep…I would go for the 32gigger. Hope that one makes it to reality.
I’m hesitant to jump on the 3G bandwagon just yet. It just seems like it will be comparable to having a cell phone in the 80’s. Very cool, hi-tech, but nobody else on the other end because the technology isn’t as readily available.
What really sucks for me is I have to live with a crappy treo 650 for another 3 months while using Sprint, the king of crap cell service providers in Las Vegas.

  18. The reason why we don’t have wide-spread 3G is simply a matter of geography. Too expensive, even for the richest nation (did you take into account the national debt?).

    US, 9.2 million sq km
    UK, 250 thousand sq km

  19. I have an iPhone. My stepson has an N95. Looked ok but after six month’s use battery life is minimal and its fake metal plastic is all scratched. The iPhone has changed the way I work. I watch tv profs on the bus to work or surf. Brilliant machine.
