RUMOR: Apple’s next-gen MacBook to be two-tone: aluminum and polycarbonate
Friday, October 10, 2008 - 01:39 PM EST

"MacBooks will have black (perhaps other colors - we have only heard black) plastic outer shells. The same type of plastic that is on the backside of an iMac," Cleve Nettles reports for 9 to 5 Mac.

"The inside shell, around the keyboard and the screen will be aluminum and that one piece structure will be the skeleton of the laptop," Nettles reports.

"It will be two-tone," Nettles reports. "Think if a iMac and a MacBook Air had offspring. Thinner than its predecessor. They are going to sell a lot of these."

Let the countdown begin!!!

Oct 10, 08 - 12:54 pm Comment from: Dr Mcr

In all fairness, this is the design I had invisaged Apple would produce for the new MacBook or whatever their smallest notebook will be called (if they introduce a new product line).

My guess is black and white (with maybe white being available on the higher spec machine like the iPhone), colours at macworld.

Oooohhhhh, spicy!

mmm, lovely in brown!

Oct 10, 08 - 01:04 pm Comment from: Nick Fury

I hope it's glossy.

Oct 10, 08 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Jimithy

I hope it's snappy.

"Think if a iMac and a MacBook Air had offspring."

Would the umbilical cord transmit at 400–3200 Mbit/s?

Oct 10, 08 - 01:29 pm Comment from: Jeremy

If the original rumour about 6 new product codes is correct, and the new 13" Pro is correct, then colours might not be in the mix.

I am thinking the products shake out as:

- 13" MacBook Pro
- 15" MacBook Pro
- 17" MacBook Pro
- Black MacBook
- Silver/white MacBook
- New MacBook Air (or secret new product)

Oct 10, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: Theory

Maybe that video from this morning is a fake and the front of the screen on the MacBooks looks like the iMac, with glass and a black border. Then the new MacBooks will look quite a lot like giant iPhones, with Black and white shiny round backs and a glass front.

4 days till AAPL stock takes a beating!!!

Oct 10, 08 - 02:02 pm Comment from: Noodle-Armed Choir Boy

Two-tone?
Tacky.
Apple won't do it.
Not only would it be poor esthetics, but also, Apple's tasteful, classic designs are another differentiator between Apple products and the desperate Apple-wanna-bees.
See all the ads for custom-design Vaios and Be-An-Individual DELLs?
Apple doesn't have to market tail fins and plaid keyboards.
Apple can instead concentrate on understated elegance in its designs.

You're here. You know what I'm talking about.

. . . or tacky flower power iMacs. Oh, wait. Never mind.

Glad those days are behind us.

Oct 10, 08 - 02:12 pm Comment from: TowerTone

In other news-Microsoft's next OS is reported to be a cross between a Zune and some Charmin....

Oct 10, 08 - 02:13 pm Comment from: State Hwy 41

". . . or tacky flower power iMacs."

Or Dalmation. However, solid colors wouldn't be bad.

Oct 10, 08 - 02:31 pm Comment from: Poo

The MBP will take up six of those new product codes. With each model (Good, Better, Best) available in glossy and matte screens. So in reality, you've got six available codes to take up between the MacBook and possibly refreshed MBA.

Oct 10, 08 - 02:34 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Sounds a bit suspect, but I never believed the all aluminum MacBook rumors.

If anyone could do a two-tone Mac and make it look great, it would be Jonathan Ive.

Glossy is TACKY! Unless you like the look of gummy fingerprints.

Oct 10, 08 - 03:18 pm Comment from: www.thefreemac.com

eww.

sounds fugly.

Oct 10, 08 - 03:24 pm Comment from: @Noodle-Armed Choir Boy

You mean like the tacky white iPhone? Black front, chrome bezel, and white back...

Apple does go for tri-tone it seems.....

Oct 10, 08 - 03:47 pm Comment from: Joy Of Tech

Apple Inc makes crappy hardware and softwares. I can't believe that dumb consumers actually buys lame products. Get a life Apple sucks!

"If anyone could do a two-tone Mac and make it look great, it would be Jonathan Ive."

It probably comes with a coupon for a set of whitewall tires and a pair of two tone clown shoes.

Oct 10, 08 - 04:13 pm Comment from: The Truth

Sounds a lot like the iBooks from a few years ago. While I like the current MacBooks in black, those white + brushed aluminum versions were amazing. I still wax nostalgically about my old dual USB 500 MHz iBook. The design went south afterward, with the change to that off-white keyboard shell that collects dirt so badly...or should I say collects dirt so well.

Oct 10, 08 - 04:40 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

The invitation to the launch suggests all-aluminium.

Oct 10, 08 - 05:03 pm Comment from: Loru

Just so long as the second color is WHITE!!!

Oct 10, 08 - 05:48 pm Comment from: bioness

speculative bs again.

If apple did that, they'd have a lot of complaints about scratching on the polycarbonate casing.

They're at the back of the imac for a good reason... no point making the macbook like a PC, in other words a blend of metal and plastic....

it's all or nothing

Oct 10, 08 - 05:58 pm Comment from: gmsquires

Even if all aluminium (for our Brit users) ;0) it could potentially be an anodized aluminum in color. Some anodized colors are sharp looking.

Oct 10, 08 - 06:14 pm Comment from: Gabe

It looks like the (aluminum) epidermis of the new Macbooks will be down right on the house!

Oct 10, 08 - 06:37 pm Comment from: Scandalous

@Joy Of Tech

You definitely come across and angry and insecure. You definitely have an unhealthy desire to immerse yourself in an environment that (somehow) allows you to feel better by insulting anyone who does not share your delusional and uninformed diatribe.

How old are you anyway? Does your big brother know you're using his computer?

Maybe your Mom should send you outside -- go ride your bike, you'll feel better.

Oct 10, 08 - 08:59 pm Comment from: Victor Meldrew

"Think if a iMac and a MacBook Air had offspring"

It's so sickening when someone can't write a better comparison such as that.

To think that English is their Mother Tongue makes it all the more pitiful.

Oct 10, 08 - 09:09 pm Comment from: iDon't

Who cares? I want bling!!!

Oct 10, 08 - 11:04 pm Comment from: MacBill

Am I the only one who wants colored MacBook Pros??! Come on Apple -- I want a range of colors to choose from when buying a MacBook Pro, just like when i buy an iPod!!

Oct 11, 08 - 04:18 am Comment from: spyinthesky

I doooon't believe it either Victor that someone can resort to such a cheap remark on here.

Oct 11, 08 - 05:45 am Comment from: Any color you like

" I want a range of colors to choose from when buying a MacBook Pro, just like when i buy an iPod!!"

Or when you buy a Dell.

Oct 11, 08 - 09:24 am Comment from: davros

Apple should use Dalekanium (aka bonded polycarbide).

Then add some funky white hemisphere bumps for character...

Oct 11, 08 - 11:52 am Comment from: Midterm Mac

Students around the world returned to school in September. Everyone loves their MacBooks. The timing of this release appears to have missed the boat. No?

Oct 11, 08 - 11:48 pm Comment from: Milking

"The timing of this release appears to have missed the boat. No?"

Not if Apple's intent was to milk fashion conscious students by selling them overpriced hardware one last time before lowering prices.
