RUMOR: AT&T iPhone tethering plan to cost $30 per month with 5GB cap
Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 12:59 PM EST

MacBlogz has a source who has shed some light on a few specific pieces of information pertaining to iPhone tethering we can expect from AT&T, when the plan is finally released.

Details include:
• 5GB Data Cap (just like Blackberry users) - AT&T will automatically turn off your tethering connection if you use too much bandwidth. Of note, the 5GB cap might get sliced for all users, not just iPhone users, in order to accommodate all new tethering plan customers (bandwidth demand).
• Expected speeds: GPRS: 30k - dialup speeds / EDGE: 110k - ISDN speeds / 3G: 1000k - slow broadband.
• Will be +$30/month, new iPhone plans may be rolled out with tethering rolled in.

That's right AT&T;, nickle & dime your customers to death instead of providing an 'all-inclusive' package, you bastards. Using iPhone demand to rape your customers isn't cool.

Nov 11, 08 - 01:25 pm Comment from: Still cheaper if it works

This is still cheaper than having a separate data card from AT&T;, VZW or Sprint. Those are about $60/month and also carry the 5GB cap which is a lot of data unless you are trying to use it as your main/only internet connection.

New plans might actually be good. If you can keep it below 5GB for your phone and your tether then only having to pay $30 for both would be great.

Wasn't there a tethering app that did this for the one-time cost of buying the app? And wasn't it pulled at the behest of AT and T [semicolon]?

Nov 11, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: slow bandwidth

I get at least 1700k with sprint using my pocket pc.

It would be real bad if Apple bought Sprint. It makes zero business sense. It sounds sexy, but in the end it is not their business model. Now Microsoft would buy Sprint and funnel its customers, but that is another article

Perhaps this will coincide with the release of version 2.2.

Hook it the f'k up

NOW

It sounds to me like AT&T;needs to work on making their network more robust to handle all this demand for bandwidth rather than imposing limits like this for people who will be shelling out over $100/month to them.

Ouch! $30 is a big hit. I was thinking more like $5 - $10.

Nov 11, 08 - 02:20 pm Comment from: Tether pirate!

I was one of the lucky ones to buy NetShare during the few hours it was up! I use it daily at my office (right now in fact) and LOVE it!! 9.99 one time charge! Will Apple disable it once a "true" tether comes out?? Don't know, but I got a friggin' receipt from Apple Inc. which shows they LEAGALLY sold it to me!! Dont' mess with my NetShare Apple!!!

I have Macs throughout my house and have been an Apple customer since the 1980's. Apple TV's, iPods, Mac desktops and laptops are all over the house. Many of my friends and most of my relatives have Macs and even a few iPhones.

I do not own an iPhone, as much as I would like to. The 'New' AT&T;, actually SBC (Southwestern Bell Communications) with AT&T;'s name, is the reason why.

This is an anti-consumer company- plain and simple. They have sued communities that have tried to put in community broadband precisely because AT&T;and other TelCos would not, even after it was approved by the voters in the communities involved. They have fought against net neutrality. They illegally handed private and confidential personal information over to the US government without a FISA Court order without any concern. The list goes on and on.

They are also notoriously cheap. Unlike Verizon, who is building fiber to the doorstep, AT&T;is trying to push digital TV services over old fashioned copper. They are the champion of tiered service, bandwidth caps and all the rest- for some of the highest prices in the developed world.

Until I can buy an iPhone and use it legally and with full warranty on the network of my choosing, it's not going to happen. BTW- Alltel offers UNLIMITED 3G broadband for $60/month. I am typing this on such a connection. No cap. Why can't AT&T;get off it's cheapskate arse and get with the program?

Workaround to display the Ampersand as in A T [Ampersand] T correctly:

Most posts show "A T [Ampersand] T ; ".

To avoid the semicolon type instead of
Ampersand
Ampersand amp ;
Here the first ampersand is actual the HTML escape character, "amp;" is the string name followed by a semicolon

Just like for generate a (sharp) accented e:
Ampersand eacute;

Examples:
AT&T
Here comes the accented e: é

Just trying to be helpful.

@ vanfruniken
I've wondered about that. Still, it's too much work. I will continue typing simply "ATT". They don't deserve more effort than that.

In other news, PdaNet remains free...

I have Sprint's data card and their is no cap. I get full EVDO rev. A. While I really like the iPhone, AT&T;is awful. I got tired of no bars in more places and I am doubt that will change. The iPhone is great. The tethering plan is more fleecing by AT&T;. The tethering should be included with the 30 bucks extra we already pay for internet access.

The iPhone on EVDO rev. A would be great. I hope there is traction to Apple buying Sprint.
