RUMOR: Dell just days away from unveiling mobile phone
Monday, August 10, 2009 - 02:09 PM EDT

Apple Online Store "A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that Dell is launching (or at least announcing) a mobile phone in China in the next day or two," Michael Arrington reports for TechCrunch.

There's "wide speculation on the operating system, but we’re guessing it’s Android. Dell has been working with Google on an Android-powered tablet computer in recent months," Arrington reports. "But in April Reuters had a report that Dell may be creating a proprietary operating system with China-based software maker Red Office."

Arrington reports, "What we’ve heard on the hardware: iPhone-like, touchscreen, no physical keyboard."

Aug 10, 09 - 02:29 pm Comment from: silverhawk

Last fall Dell was told their phone was too boring. So they had to go to China to reinvigorate the phone?

Aug 10, 09 - 02:30 pm Comment from: Deus Ex Technica

A possible attempt to freeze the market just as Apple gets ready to unleash the iPhone in China.

Also, a possible explanation of why Schmidt left with so little fanfare.

Or, could be a load of crap. But if Dell is making a move in the smartphone areana, I'm keeping my eye on Palm's stock price - could be a connection there.

It will be called the 'jPhone 4SuperGS', just so people will know it's better than the iPhone 3GS.

Another Android phone to add to the pile.

Maybe THIS will bring in that ocean of developers. LOL

if it is some winmo POS, it will just make the iPhone look better.

Let's see. american companies copy one another to death, then send the blueprints to asia to be built. Japan is probably working on their 7th generation robots and other innovations, China on their 10th generation manufacturing electronics impressively cheap. How long before asia realizes they have the upper hand and drive most of our companies under? We still owe them our national debt don't we? If so, then they have plenty of credit and capital. (typed on a good old-fashioned made in china Macbook Pro)

I'm putting my iPhone on eBay right now!

Aug 10, 09 - 03:25 pm Comment from: Gordon Horne

When I read the headline my first thought was not possible, unless they are rebranding an existing phone. Approvals for new devices take time, are not secret, and Dell has been closely watched.

But China? That's possible. Fight with the counterfeit iPhones before Apple moves in. Get and defend a piece of the largest potential market in the world. Then move on to India, I guess. Possible. I'm not sure it's probable, though.

Aug 10, 09 - 03:27 pm Comment from: Original Jake

@maclover,
If anything, Asia has fallen further behind Western companies in technology design and software development. Software is the key, because--as the iPhone and iPod Touch have shown--the future of "gadgets" is no longer driven primarily by hardware engineering but by software engineering. By the way, Asian companies copy each other even MORE than they copy Western companies. Asia is a dog eat dog market environment, with plenty of incentive for incremental change and flashy new products but very little incentive for investing in software (IP) or in fundamental tech advances. Also, those robots in Japan are still not particularly useful or efficient given the cost of producing them. Nice basic research, but no real likelihood of an economic benefit any time soon.
Remember all those late 80s/early 90s stories about Japan overtaking the US? Instead, Japan has gotten a LOT less competitive in the international arena since the early 90s. In Japan, they even refer to it as the "lost decade" in economic stagnation.
China is only different because it has over a billion people, so it will be a bigger market. But they'll have even bigger problems over the next 20 years, such as their birthrate to take just one example.
There are plenty of challenges in Western nations (e.g., California) too, though, so no guarantee we won't fall flat on our faces. But, if we do, it will be primarily because of our own mistakes, not because Asia is such a powerful competitor.

Another DJ for sure!

Aug 10, 09 - 03:34 pm Comment from: cogitoergomac

In the hands of a competent company--not necessarily a brilliant one, just competent--this could be cause for competitive concern. Such a company could learn a lot from this endeavor, and significantly enlarging Android's installed base will have an impact.

Dell to throw away investor's money on another POS.
MS Windows PC hawkers aren't even recommending Dell anything these days because of quality issues with the hardware. A friend who has to suffer with a Windows Laptop recently when looking for a new one because his 18 month old DELL crapped out he told me he was going to buy another Dell but the guys in Best Buy told him that would be an wise choice because of Dell's poor quality in the past year or so. With their profits tanking and all the cuts they've made to save cost the only thing Dell was churning out these days wasn't worth spending the money on. They recommend an HP which he bought. I told him he should have gotten a Mac and went Windows slumming for work using Boot Camp. He hadn't even open the HP Box so he returned it to Best Buy and bought a Macbook Pro. set-up Boot Camp took out this old hard drive from the Dead Dell and recovered his data and important stuff. He's loves the MacBook over the cheap plastic HP POS and the really cheap Dell POS

So, the question is who in their right mind will be buying a Dell anything these days.

DELL boardroom discussion:

- "Johnson, what's your idea?"

- "Well, Michael, we'll innovate and research and create a whole new, user-centric, easy interface, on a quality, DELL-designed OS!"

(Pause, then peels of hysterical laughter from the DELL board-members)

- "Heh heh - Kidding!
Nah, it'll be totally 'iPhone-like'. "

Aug 10, 09 - 04:52 pm Comment from: fandango

Just like Microsoft, Dell is continuing to introduce products outside its area of 'expertise'.

Listen folks, the true mark of a professional is to make something look easy. But Dell & MS need to stick to the warning of ''What you are about to see is performed by trained professionals. Don't try this at home."

It's so funny to watch companies like Dell, et al, think that just because Apple has been so successful in its endeavors (which has taken years of planning, btw) that they can cobble together some 'me too' product and then market it as 'just as good as iPhone' and have people fall for it. News Flash: people are too smart for that crap now; it's not 1985 anymore...

I was recently thinking about getting a 10" 'netbook' to run Linux on as a 4th lappie, but after I read the story about how Ballmer is trying to escalate the prices of netbooks by inflating the cost of Windows 7, I decided to give Ballmer the 'Middle Finger Salute'.

http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2009/02/26/why-windows-7-on-netbooks-wont-save-microsoft/

I'll be getting a new 15" PowerBook and a 32g iPod Touch (with Skype) instead.

Dell must be looking up from their balance sheet, noticing the margin in the iPhone and just dying to get some of the action. Good luck with that.

Had a friend from home who was in my squadron. He had a little duplex 1 block from the beach in Pacific Beach. Nice place to R&R;. One of the guys in our barracks was a ex-Army paratrooper who had been a roommate of Richard Speck, the dude who killed the nurses in Chicago. He'd get drunk and bail out of the second story barracks window, and those were old high ceiling places. It was good times. Got back in 95 to watch the Americas cup boats. That town changed for the worse. Not a seafarer store downtown.

Yea, in/out over the years, and seems by mid 80s Downtown - Broadway was getting "civilized"

Reckon the War on Drugs Hookers and Booze put the old people and places into the History Books ?

But, that seems a never ending process ...

Had a landlord there in Early 70s who - Honest to God's Truth - as a young puppy he was a coal shoveler who made the Cruise with the Great White Fleet.

Ol' Salt sure had some Damn Serious Sea Stories, and loved to bitch about how Sandy and the Navy were full of nothing but wussies who didn't know shit from shineola, or words to that effect.

Well, guess more things change, more they stay ... etc, yea ?

cool smile

Now, hadn't heard the name of Speck in long while, yuk

But here's you a similar tale of weird shit connections ...

In Mid to Late 80s, leaving a Rest Stop in North Fla on I-10, picked up a woman hitch hiking.

What the hell, I was alone, it was night, figured she was maybe a hooker, and she was - but didn't take long to know she wasn't my cup of tea, if you get my drift.

Did feel sorry for her, knew she wasn't going to have much success at her chosen endeavor - had been beat up too many times.

And something about her made me nervous, very nervous. Could have been that she was nervous, but mostly was because she never took one hand out of her purse ... hummm?

Anyway, I was congenial, made some nice chit chat, let her off at the next exit, wished her luck, and got back on the road.

However ... did remember her face, was hard to forget.

Then find out couple years later ... was Aileen Wuornos, the Monster movie lady

silverhawk, imagine you already know this, but for any of the Kids around ...

You never know who you may run across on the Road of Life

And always keep an eye on the ones who keep a hand in their purse ... wink

She knew everybody and everything from Venereal Beach to just south of Squaremont

Was a walking talking combination tour bus and social director

If you run into her, tell her I said "hey" and she still owes me that $20

Classic stuff. The Black, how could I forget? Well, I guess now that I think about it, I'm not surprised that I couldn't remember.....since I used to live walking distance.....Great town. Peace.
