RUMOR: New brushed-metal, reshaped Apple iMacs coming at WWDC
Monday, June 04, 2007 - 10:25 AM EST

"With WWDC approaching it’s not just the iPhone that has captured all the headlines - the rest of Apple’s range is being scrutinised to see what’s next for a Santa Rosa upgrade. The venerable iMac looks to be the likeliest candidate, with rumour suggesting the casing will see a reshaping (losing much of the under-screen bulk) and swapping the white casing for a smart brushed-metal one," Chris Davies reports for SlashGear via 9to5Mac.

Davies reports, "Obviously the innards are getting some attention too, with the obvious Santa Rosa upgrade and Apple discontinuing the 17-inch TFT panel in favour of a 20-inch version (which will apparently come in cheaper), while the current 24-inch flagship might get some even larger siblings."

Full article, with artist's conception of the new iMac, here.

Brushed metal is so 2003.

Jun 04, 07 - 09:31 am Comment from: drew_ill

HAHA - MDN Magic Word - "Wrong"!!

I'd be shocked if this one were true. The metal case would do a better job of sinking heat away though. Let's not hold our breath on this one.

Jun 04, 07 - 09:32 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

Or maybe something iPhoney? Black front and screen with a silver surround that also forms the back of the case. Just a thought. The current iMac was obviously a tie in to the iPod, why not the same logic with the iPhone?

Jun 04, 07 - 09:42 am Comment from: tre

That artist rendering looks like the display from the last generation "lamp-shade" iMac with the current generation cinema displays pedestal thrown onto it..

If Apple is going to redesign the iMac, they're gonna be more imaginative than that..

Jun 04, 07 - 09:47 am Comment from: NO GLOSSY SCREENS!!

NO GLOSSY SCREENS PLEASE OR I'LL CLASS ACTION FOR HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON THE BEHALF OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS

You have been warned Apple.

Jun 04, 07 - 09:49 am Comment from: Paulo

With the new shuffle and nano iPods now in brushed metal it makes sense that the iMac would change too. I've never been a fan of all that shiny plastic.

Jun 04, 07 - 09:58 am Comment from: MikeR

I agree concerning the glossy screens. My MPB has the matte screen and it's wonderful. No reflections while sitting in my sun room. Couldn't be here with the glossy screen.

Jun 04, 07 - 09:59 am Comment from: RedBeard

Actually, I think I saw one of these in the movie "Knocked Up" this weekend. There is VERY prominent Apple placement in that movie - and there is a scene where one of the characters is using a brushed metal looking one-peice Mac. I turned to my wife and said, "those don't even exist! What's up with that...."

Maybe they do! smile

Jun 04, 07 - 10:00 am Comment from: wing

people must bear in mind that it is the WWDC, not the January consumer shows. It will focus on 10.5. So unlikely to have new imac .

Jun 04, 07 - 10:02 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

Hey wouldn't be nice if Apple gave me my choice of color? Maybe I want brushed metal, maybe red, blue, or even beige. I just want the choice.

And you can't tell me that Apple can't make a decent profit by doing customized cases:

Case Color please choose from White Plastic (+$0), Black Plastic (+$200), Brushed Metal (+$200), Anodized Red (+$300), Anodized Blue (+$300), Anodized Green (+$300), Anodized Yellow (+$300), Anodized Purple (+$300), Anodized Orange (+$300), Anodized Navy (+$300), and for the folks who live in Redmond Anodized Brown (+$300).

Jun 04, 07 - 10:07 am Comment from: emax

Seems cool. but i still want an intel cube....

and Glossy Screen....I hope you are joking.

While i dont like the glossy screens, it is not grounds for a class action lawsuit. if you like to sue people sue the gun maker after you pull the trigger when its against your head.

Jun 04, 07 - 10:08 am Comment from: Tre

Wing,

WWDC is not about consumer vs. non-consumer. It is about developer vs. non-developer related items..

Whether it be a pro model or a consumer model, a Mac is a Mac and therfore of interest to developers and a perfectly suitable product to be introduced at WWDC..

I wouldn't expect new iPods or Apple TV type products at WWDC, but a new iMac is fair game..

Jun 04, 07 - 10:16 am Comment from: iMaki

Brushed metal iMac? Well, that would end it for me. I can't stand the look of all brushed metal. It would be a huge mistake to depart from the pure white design. A black option I could handle. Please say it ain't so.

>>Or maybe something iPhoney? Black front and screen with a silver surround that also forms the back of the case. Just a thought. The current iMac was obviously a tie in to the iPod, why not the same logic with the iPhone?

That makes a lot of sense. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to see tht come true.

Jun 04, 07 - 10:18 am Comment from: macone

I was hoping for the kameleon mac that they thought of quite some time ago. Man if apple does that its going to be all over for any other company out there everyone will want a color changing imac.

But im up for any change. Apple has stopped us from ordering imacs so something is amok.
When the new imacs come out you can find them with some great adobe CS3 deals at MAC ONE STORE and our site is located at <A href="http://http://onestopappleshop.com">onestopappleshop.com<a>

Jun 04, 07 - 10:18 am Comment from: Georgy Porgy

Let's not set ourselves up for disappointment...Leopard should be the number one priority here. I also would like to see a revamped iMac, but I wouldn't bet on it. Apple knows they need to spread things out, especially over the summer where most of our focus is on vacation, outdoors, etc. and not tech purchases. Lets let the iPhone and Leopard features do the summer hype and get our expectations up near the fall for hardware. The water gets muddy real easy with Apple hype, as prospect sheep can't focus on barely one thing at a time.

Jun 04, 07 - 10:25 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

I'm hoping there won't be a new iMac until my iPod dies. I bought an iMac in December and although I've reconciled myself to it being replaced at some point, I'd like to be able to buy a new iPod/iPhone if an iMac comes out so I can console myself with some shiny new apple kit. Not really a great deal of logic but there you go.

Jun 04, 07 - 10:29 am Comment from: MacB

Please....NO new iMacs. I put my bet on new Mac Pro's (tower) with a new housing. Next to that a new server line.....wait and see.

MacB

Jun 04, 07 - 10:35 am Comment from: Kev

I really hope not. I was hoping they would do that whole color-changing thing using fiber optics in the casing.

Jun 04, 07 - 10:37 am Comment from: Petey

Apple always uses white as it's signature colour for it's consumer range of hardware - not brushed metal.

Unless the imac is gonna be in the pro-hardware line I cant see them doing this at all.

Jun 04, 07 - 10:37 am Comment from: ron

>and for the folks who live in Redmond Anodized Brown (We'll pay you).>

Jun 04, 07 - 10:41 am Comment from: TowerTone

I prefer combed metal.

Jun 04, 07 - 10:52 am Comment from: macman

Basically, the iMac would look like a Cinema Display which I don't believe will happen since Apple likes to keep the consumer and pro lines different looking (i.e. macbook versus macbook pro).

I bet the new iMac will still come in white, without the bulk below the screen, but Apple will offer a higher end matte black iMac to match the black macbook.

Jun 04, 07 - 11:00 am Comment from: Steve

Two words. Black. Matt

Jun 04, 07 - 11:06 am Comment from: Tre

A new iMac design in white would be predictable... Apple is anything but predictable..

Think different.

Jun 04, 07 - 11:12 am Comment from: Petey

I want an updated version of the mac mini!

Jun 04, 07 - 11:22 am Comment from: montex

What's your problem, NO GLOSSY SCREENS!! ? Glossy screens are great for those who want them. Not every Mac user is a Photoshop jock.

Jun 04, 07 - 11:40 am Comment from: M@c

I want a Bondi Blue iMac. In fact, I want Bondi Blue everything. Actually, i just like saying Bondi Blue.

Jun 04, 07 - 11:41 am Comment from: Save your eyes!

What's your problem, NO GLOSSY SCREENS!! ? Glossy screens are great for those who want them. Not every Mac user is a Photoshop jock.

Glossy screens are just like CRT's

There is a reflection on the screen and with your eyes constantly focusing on the two images causes intense eyestrain and the premature need for glasses.

Occassional glossy screen use may not be such a problem, but longterm use is another problem altogether.

It's a occupational hazzard caused by a product defect that was cured with Matte screens whne they replaced CRT's but returned again with glossy screens.

The grounds for a lawsuit are valid and Apple is certainly ripe for a target.

People overwhelmingly choose matte screens over glossy anyway, just for this reason.

Jun 04, 07 - 12:06 pm Comment from: YoYo

We'll see if the black iMac finally comes out or if the screen's LED backlight extends to the case so the whole computer will glow (and even change it's hue).

Jun 04, 07 - 12:22 pm Comment from: PM

People....stop confusing brushed metal with anodized aluminum. They are two completely different things. Apple uses anodized aluminum on their ipod nanos and Macbook Pros....not brushed metal. Apple owns the patent for anodized aluminum....not brushed metal.

Stop mixing the two up (or in some cases...forgetting one)

Jun 04, 07 - 12:36 pm Comment from: Chris

@PM: Not arguing your point, you are correct about the two... but a question. What does Apple own the patent for? Not for anodized aluminum, period. That's been used in many products long before Apple used it. Do they own the patent for using it in a computer case? Aren't there other computer cases that use anodized aluminum? I'm almost positive I've seen them.

iMac - the 'de Lorean' of computers

Jun 04, 07 - 01:03 pm Comment from: Phil

Maybe they'll also change the name. It doesn't really fit into all the names. MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro.....iMac??!?

Jun 04, 07 - 01:27 pm Comment from: Holy Mackerel

If Leopard supports multi-touch and the iMac supports Leopard then a 17" iMac is probably too small for multi-touch applications.

I hope the iMac will have the similar pedestal to current models, and can not only operate far away as a monitor, but clicks back into a small drafting table-mode for single user touching use, or swings all the way flat as a multi-user coffee table. Now where have I seen this before?…

Jun 04, 07 - 02:00 pm Comment from: Traveller

The entire line of mac hardware is likely to be updated between now and the launch of 10.5. They all have gone a long time without any serious redesigns.

It's really a question of what new macs Apple will choose to release first and when. Apple tends to be very strategic in these matters.

I'm thinking their will be at least one new mac revealed at WWDC, but I'm not guessing which.

Jun 04, 07 - 02:38 pm Comment from: LordRobin

So a Mac rumor site no one's heard of quotes a second Mac rumor site no one's heard of about a consumer product about to be launched at a developer conference?

Oh yeah, totally believable. I'd stake money on this one, fer shure.

Jun 04, 07 - 07:54 pm Comment from: Sss

If they offer a 30 inch iMac I'll get in line for one - no matter what the case color.

Jun 04, 07 - 11:20 pm Comment from: GeorgeP

"Brushed metal is so 2003."

So are all-in-on computers! For god sake Apple, give me something worth buying.

Jun 05, 07 - 05:39 pm Comment from: Late

Well, maybe by brushed metal they mean aluminum like the Mac Pros. Aluminum is much easier to recycle than their current million-year life-span plastic casings. Possibly this has to do with the move to be "greener".

Or, it could quite possibly be a load of crap rumor. I suppose we'll find out in due time....
