RUMOR: Next-gen Apple iMacs soon to ship with new low-profile keyboard
Monday, July 09, 2007 - 05:00 PM EST

"An overhaul to Apple Inc.'s popular line of iMac computers, now due in a matter of weeks, will see the company's latest industrial design efforts extend beyond the systems themselves," Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

"The new all-in-one signature desktops, expected to be available only in 20- and 24-inch configurations, have been described as both slimmer and sleeker than the 17-, 20- and 24-inch models they will replace," Jade reports.

"Each new model will come dressed to impress, bundling a snazzy new Apple keyboard of similarly slender proportions, people familiar with the project say... It's said to draw upon the aesthetic and feel of the low-profile keyboard which was first integrated with the company's 13-inch MacBook portables in May of 2006," Jade reports.

? I think the MacBooks Keyboard feels funny to the touch. It better not be like that.

Jul 09, 07 - 04:05 pm Comment from: ron

That'll be 6 Mac keyboards I have as soon as I buy the new iMac in August.

Apple makes computers?.....

Jul 09, 07 - 04:19 pm Comment from: ken1w

That would be cool. I like the feel of those keyboards, although I've only used them on demo MacBooks at the Apple Store. I hope I can buy them separately for my existing Mac.

Jul 09, 07 - 04:24 pm Comment from: Eric

Eh, I want a touch surface Apple. Give me something like the iPhone but bigger. It is simply awesome to browse the net with your fingers......

iMac, shmyMac. Give me a mini tower with a single Core 2 Duo, more RAM slots and separate graphic card and PCI slots. I need something more extendable than an iMac for my home office without resorting to MacPro overkill.

Jul 09, 07 - 04:35 pm Comment from: tz

and a super slim mouse? Road kill perhaps?

Jul 09, 07 - 04:37 pm Comment from: Road Warrior

I must admit the metal looking keyboard on my MacBook Pro's is pretty cool looking.

Also the thin profile.

I sat in a coffee shop next to a guy who had this 2 inch thick HP laptop. He was jealously glancing at my laptop from time to time.

Unfortunatly the coffee shop wireless had something like 128 bit 28 character encryption and a huge password.

I looked like a idiot trying to figure it out by opening the Airport menu and retyping the password over and over with different options, WEP etc.

So anyway I finally gave up and the HP dude laughed.

What did I do wrong and why wasn't it easy as it supposed to be on a Mac?

Anyone?

Jul 09, 07 - 04:48 pm Comment from: AshNazg

@ tz: Or maybe no mouse at all but some slick Multi-Touch input device...

Wait a sec.. who am I kidding?

Jul 09, 07 - 04:57 pm Comment from: Andy C.

@Road Warrior

If it's 128Bit hex, you need to add a "$" to the beginning (without the quotes, of course).

@Chrissy

Yes, I heard their hotcakes were selling like iPhones.....

This slimmed down keyboard would for sure eliminate all the crumbs that have gathered inside my keyboard. I can probably feed a small country with the amount of food that gathers in this thing.

Jul 09, 07 - 05:20 pm Comment from: standardmess

Damn, that's one crummy keyboard you've got!!

MW: you

She doesn't care if it's thick or thin, as long as it feels good.

Jul 09, 07 - 05:37 pm Comment from: America's Next Top Sheep

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who use ergonomic keyboards and those who are or will suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.

Jul 09, 07 - 05:42 pm Comment from: pocketRocket

@Fat Computer Slob

Gotta agree with you there... had that problem with my old PowerMac keyboard on my dual G4. When I upgraded I got an iSkin keyboard cover - takes a little getting used to - but now when things get dusty I can just wash it off under the tap!

Jul 09, 07 - 05:57 pm Comment from: 8R

@One guy from Finland
If you really need 10 iMacs you should have ordered them last month. If there is work to do get it done. You don't need the next best thing at a work place.

MW: cause: Buy before you need "cause" there is money to be made!

I am replacing all pc and imacs with iphones. get with the times people. desktops are for the windows users.

Jul 09, 07 - 06:33 pm Comment from: Famous Grouse

It was a sad day when the Apple Pro keyboard that came with my Quicksilver died and was replaced by the $29.99 Apple keyboard du jour. I tried Kensington and all the rest, but even apple's watered down replacement was better than these.

Nonetheless, please bring back high keyboards!!!

Uh, I guess You're talking about the big A*S table Microsoft makes for almost 10K.

Jul 09, 07 - 08:14 pm Comment from: Jay

The low profile keyboard will also cut down on wind resistance. I plan to add racing stripes, which will be pretty sharp.

Jul 09, 07 - 09:17 pm Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

"Damn, I got a woody!"

Sorry to kill your buzz but it's about time you washed it off and gave it back to that kid in Toy Story.

"iMac, shmyMac. Give me a mini tower with a single Core 2 Duo, more RAM slots and separate graphic card and PCI slots. I need something more extendable than an iMac for my home office without resorting to MacPro overkill"

Absolutely, but after Apple prices it it'll be cheaper to get the Power Mac. Look at the mini to see what I mean. Too expensive, and once you upgrade it you're "just" a couple of hundred from the next level. Once you look at that, uoure "just" a couple of hundred from the next level up. Eventually you price the Tower and go, "Whoops, too much for what I need to do." and then you look at the refurbs, but eventually you cancel the order and wait for better days.

It's a keyboard!

I have GOT to get a life.

Jul 10, 07 - 01:55 am Comment from: mAc-warrior

I wish they would bring back the "Apple Pro Keyboard" from the Quicksilver/iMac G4 era. I have one with my iMac G4 and it is by far the best keyboard I have ever used in my life. Perfect tactile feedback, quiet, and nice looking. The current, cheap "Apple Keyboard" that replaced it has half the elegance and does not feel as nice to type on as the Pro Keyboard it replaced.

Yaaay!

Because we're all sooo deperate for a "low profile keyboard"...

or not...

How quickly have we forgot the ThinkSecret's thicker!
This news is the constant rumers reported from AI slimer, maybe faster.. which now with the slim keyboard explains the MB-Pro features or sharing such parts.
I hope for a quad-core too! It's always good to dream wink
@Eric I too whish for a Muti-touch UI especial if it's sensitive enough tobe a Graph-tablet in-put via a styles of-course. Although people would still prefer to use a keyboard
but they could if, when their keyboard breaks be-able to use the on-screen keyboard for emergencies.

Jul 10, 07 - 05:36 am Comment from: Chris ][

Please don't let it be like the MacBook's keyboard. That's okay for a laptop, but for a desktop -- no way. As it is, I have to replace my mouse with a non-Apple mouse (for Photoshop etc), so if they change the keyboard for the worse, I'd have to have a non-matching (current Apple) keyboard. Unless they really pull off some incredible design, a MacBook-like keyboard will be a laughing stock. And if they do it on the iMac anyway, Please, please, please, not on the MacPro.

QUESTION FOR FEEDBACK:
I'm considering a Mac Mini or AppleTV for my home theater. Is there anything that the AppleTV can do that the macMini can't?

I just want to be able use front row for movies, music... maybe occasional web browsing.

"Unfortunatly the coffee shop wireless had something like 128 bit 28 character encryption and a huge password"

I recently went thru something like this with our cable company when we were getting a wireless setup going at my summer residence.

I'm not an expert about this, but make sure about the type of 128bit encryption being used.

Make sure the password is exact. We had issues until we realized we were one letter/number off. Also, (I'm presuming the password was alphanumeric) using capital letters MAY be a factor. Although our technician said it didn't matter, we couldn't log on until all the capital letters in our password were replaced with lowercase.
