RUMOR: Next-gen Apple iPhone imminent; new Multi-Touch ‘iTablet’ due in June
Monday, May 12, 2008 - 02:32 PM EST

"In April, SwitchToaMac.com published a rumor that Apple would be launching the 3G iPhone earlier than expected... in May. At the time, we dismissed it, as the rumor didn't seem to correspond with the circulating expectations that the new iPhone would be launched in June at WWDC. Apple's dwindling stock of iPhones in both the U.S. and U.K. however, has made us look at this rumor once again," Arnold Kim reports for MacRumors.

"As mentioned, SwitchToaMac's source claimed that the 3G-capable iPhone would be announced in May, with the belief that it would be available for purchase the day after the announcement," Kim reports.

"The reason for a pre-WWDC announcement? Reportedly, Apple would instead announce a brand new portable device at WWDC," Kim reports. "No other details of what this device might be, but there have been rumors that Apple was developing a mini-tablet multitouch device for launch in 2008."

I can easily see Apple release v2 of the iPhone in the next few days.

And then a new type of hardware for the touch technology in June.

May 12, 08 - 01:39 pm Comment from: c

Complete bullshit.

Jobs is going to announce the iPhone at the ADC during his keynote, and there will be no stinking tablet in sight.

These guys are bullshit artists.

You're second!!

I wish people would stop posting first comments. Those type comments are all about "Hey look at me!" and not about the article they're posting in.

I wonder if a Mac Tablet will run Mac OS X or the iPhone OS, like the iPhone & iPod Touch do?

iTouch Myself.

May 12, 08 - 01:54 pm Comment from: cptnkirk

Rogers in Canada has started a new summer promotion of smartphones but there is no mention of the iPhone. If it were coming this soon, they may have waited and included it.

May 12, 08 - 02:00 pm Comment from: Steve

A tablet is something I've been asking for far too long. An iPhone with a larger screen and a 3G data plan. Now that would really be a breakthrough.

May 12, 08 - 02:06 pm Comment from: oh no my shorts

iPlop. iFizz. Oh what an iRelief it is!

Seriously--time to break with the "i" naming convention.

How about omniBook?

May 12, 08 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Toasty

Maybe they will call it an AppleTini and we can sip fantastic drinks from it as well as all those other fantastic Mac things it can do.

"I wish people would stop posting first comments."

Huh? Then how would a thread start without a first poster?

May 12, 08 - 02:07 pm Comment from: Mac_ATTY

I REALLY hope this is true... I cracked the screen on my iPhone a month ago and have been holding out for the new model.... can't wait!

May 12, 08 - 02:07 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

You can understand why 'c' has provided such obscure and minimal identification after making that inequivicable claim. Probably sensibly.

May 12, 08 - 02:09 pm Comment from: Macintosh

I don't think it will happen... I am pretty sure Apple wants to ship the new iPhone with the new software and give the full rundown of the features, like they always do.

This is one of the key product updates for Apple in several years. They aren't going to just plop it on their website.

The over-sized iPhone (tablet) is probably nonsense. They made the iPhone zoom in and out on everything for a reason.

And why is the iPhone out of stock so early? To avoid disgruntled customers who buy the first iPhone a few days or weeks before the new one comes out. It's called doing the right thing, even if it will impact the sales numbers for the current quarter...

May 12, 08 - 02:09 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

Boy, soon these analysts will know even as much as we know. Wow!

It is incredible that Apple has kept a lid on the next generation of stuff and
nobody really knows absolutely anything more than
they can speculate with their small minds.
Wow, 3g, maybe GPS, maybe a tablet...what powerful minds these analysts get paid to use.

May 12, 08 - 02:10 pm Comment from: Dave - Colorado

Hmmmm. none of us has been expecting a multitouch laptop, have we???? Just been a matter of time.

May 12, 08 - 02:12 pm Comment from: Stephen

iTablet, the rumor that will not die no matter how many times you drive a stake thru its heart.

May 12, 08 - 02:16 pm Comment from: Yawn

While I would like to think that Apple could do the tablet PC right, unlike Microsofts table OS... but I doubt it.

Further, while Apple seems to be gaining some ground in business, not enough yet for a successful tablet. Without business a tablet = failure.

Tablets have never lived up to the hype. More multi-touch. Thats the ticket until a resasonable arguement can be made for touchscreen tech. The screens have short lives, people have grimmy fingers, and you always lose the stylist.

Just give mea faster iPhone, maybe unlocked, and a 32 and 64 GB option.

May 12, 08 - 02:18 pm Comment from: drbyers

how about "apple newton?" lol

May 12, 08 - 02:19 pm Comment from: PC Apologist

Stephen -

iPhone was that kind of rumor, too, as I recall.

May 12, 08 - 02:20 pm Comment from: something new

man I am glad this rumor came out. iPhone 2, 3G iPhone etc was starting to become rather passé.

Seeing as how the new phone would be a hardware update (storage, data speed, 2 cameras), I think it is plausible to have this before rev2 of the software comes out which, presumably, should work on ver1 (current) or ver2 hardware.

This is going to be anywhere from a long month to a long day.

May 12, 08 - 02:24 pm Comment from: Mac Master

I would gladly give up being first as I do agree... June can't come fast enough!

Boring. You are all such lemmings. Apple pull the iPhone 1 to start the hype going and you all fall for it, hook, line and sinker!

May 12, 08 - 02:46 pm Comment from: Buster

Do people really want a touch screen laptop or a tablet? I think it would be just another niche market (like the MBA) myself.

May 12, 08 - 02:50 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

I'd like something slightly larger than my iPhone which I could velcro to my airplane panel, and have a backup GPS-based navigation capability.

Also, increase storage to 64 GB, and hook up to a wireless keyboard, and 15" display.

Fun to dream.

May 12, 08 - 02:57 pm Comment from: mark

One reason there could be an early May 20 release of the 3G iPhone is to let developers use it in preparing/updating/testing their iPhone apps for release at WWDC. The 3G iPhone would have the latest OS software but would have the App Store turned off until that time.

May 12, 08 - 02:58 pm Comment from: KenC

Apple would need to send out an invitation to journalists for a special meeting in Cupertino. We'd all hear about that, and it would be at least a couple weeks out. Until that happens, this is just more grist for the rumor mill.

May 12, 08 - 03:06 pm Comment from: SirROM

Okay, here is my take:

Apple will not want to take attention away from the next ten iPhone with a new device. They can get the press (and us) to milk this until WWDC and then fan the flames with the release of 2.0 and the app store until at least mid to late July. Then thus can have another special presentation to introduce any such new device in time for the school season along with update MacBooks. If they introduce a new device during WWDC, either it or the iPhone will have its message diluted and Steve would not likely do that. Just my $ .02 worth.

May 12, 08 - 03:10 pm Comment from: Mac+

Yawn writes "Without business a tablet = failure"

Not so sure... it's all about the size of that thing. Also, to work this tablet concept needs to be rethought. It shouldn't be a mutli-touch laptop. Don't make the mistake of Microsoft who applied the PC concept to the tablet. Do it differently or Think different one would say:

Clearly it'll have to be somekind of media device (an extended iPod Touch like). The media will make it higly usable to watch video, movies and consult documents/presentations (in the future animated). Not to mention handwritting and ebook. when you watch it that way, then you tend to think that thing can fly.

May 12, 08 - 03:23 pm Comment from: just the usual rumors

Apple will announce a tablet at the same keynote as Mac OS licensing, a game console, and a merger with Disney.

IOW, it ain't gonna happen.

May 12, 08 - 03:27 pm Comment from: jeffsu

Lets think about this guys... the most valid comment made here was this one:

"And why is the iPhone out of stock so early? To avoid disgruntled customers who buy the first iPhone a few days or weeks before the new one comes out. It's called doing the right thing, even if it will impact the sales numbers for the current quarter..."

While we all wouldn't want to think so -- Apple does. Remember the PR nightmare that was the pricecut? Everyone who just bought one complained like a maniac -- and Jobs had to write his little apology and offer $100 credit. To avoid that panic and upsetting its customer-base, its not letting people make that mistake for up to 30 days before the release date. No returns to give it back and get v2!

People are especially apt to buy now with economic stimulus checks, etc.

"...and you always lose the stylist."

Just keep the conversation simple and the stylist can usually follow along just fine.

That didn't stop Apple's white keyboards and scroll-pellet mouse.

May 12, 08 - 04:48 pm Comment from: Ferf Muckmeyer

There is no fscking "iMac Touch" or whatever they want you to believe.

But like I predicted last week - the new iPhone WILL arrive sooner than later. Would Apple take a chance and not have stock of ANY iPhones for a month? C'mon!
