that's a lie, the shops NEVER get the prices in advance, it never happened before (not since the late 80's), and is not happening now.

$800 for a portable? Say goodbye to the Mac mini.

$3k seems pretty steep. I know there are some Windoze laptops at about that price point... primarily gaming machines. Frankly, unless there is a specific market... a price like that only helps the argument that Macs are more expensive. People will point to that laptop, not the lower priced ones.

That is the price of the higher spec Mac Mini ($799) and would translate to £499 in the UK (which is how the same Mac Mini is priced in the UK).

I can think of a few people that would buy this in an instant, and I would start saving the day it was launched (having an iMac, I couldn't justify a second mac immediately).

First thing I thought of - at $3100 SSHDs would have to be installed. Having said that, it's hardly a rumour is it - next-gen laptops priced between $800-3100. Wow, shocker...

3k is the SSD/Nvidia price for Final Cut types.
A thin DVD-less 10" laptop really appeals to both me and my wife. Our Macbook has been used so very much along with our little iPod Touch for couch surfing, etc., but a device that splits the middle of these two would be used even more.
Welcome to the world of ultra-mobile...I hope Apple makes last years Macbook look and feel like a tank. Students would eat it up and yes, a few choices of color is important.

i hope the 800 model doesn't come with a combodrive! otherwise the right strategy at the right time. netbooks are becoming very popular at least here in germany. good, that apple reacts to that threat (that the price-differnce between the average windows-laptop and an apple-laptop becomes too big) accordingly. i really hope it's true. and i hope el jobso is delivering the new laptops in a stevenote otherwise the health-rumor will raise its ugly head again.

Did ya' have any idea that the ads you see on this (and most webpages) are generated and selected according to YOUR parameters - the pages you visit, the stuff you click on...for example, I do NOT see the ad you describe on "my version" of the MDN page. I saw a Obama Biden for President poster today. The group I was with thought it said Obama Bin Laden at first glance. The scary thing is that they're all Obama fans and thought it had been put up by someone trying to smear Obama. On second looks they all agreed that it said Obama Biden. It is an official poster you find at the Democratic support site. I'm just not seeing the connection.

Obviously MDN has yanked the video ad, and rightfully so. It was just below the "Add Your Feeback:" section below the "Submit" button.

There is only a blank space there now.

I paid $699 for a new Leftover iBook 1.2GHz G4 in Late 05 @ an apple store because the 1.33 & 1.42 Ghz G4's replaced it.

Can we please keep this MACINTOSH site free of things that have nothing to do with the MACINTOSH? I do think that political advertising on this site is inappropriate, and I think that the adds that occasional ads that pop up for viagra are even more inappropriate. However, selling ad space is the main way that sites like this one are able to stay online.

Finally, @Flameon, I promise not to push my Jewish beliefs down your throat if you promise not to push your non-Jewish beliefs down my throat. Also, I know I just asked to keep things politics free here but I have to ask... do you really think a MCain/Palin ticket is the way to go? The first thing they will do is overturn Roe-V-Wade which will effectively remove a woman's right to make choices about her own body with regard to abortion. You say that you have children. Is at least one of them a daughter? If (I would not wish this on anyone) she were to be the victim of a sexual attack and discovered that she was pregnant, do you believe that she should be forced to go through the pregnancy term? That is what overturning Roe Vs Wade would cause to happen.

As for the sub-$700 laptop, it's about freakin' time; could put the final nail in the Windows Vista coffin. Likely a fairly low-powered processor and the integrated graphics so it wouldn't be a good gaming machine but would be a perfect entry-level laptop for moderate income families with a kid going into middle school; would likely last them till high school graduation when you could justify getting them a higher-powered laptop as a graduation gift. Would also be great for schools that want to use computers for certain classes but don't have the space for a dedicated desktop lab.
