RUMOR: No new Apple iMacs at WWDC

“Despite a growing number of reports to the contrary, it’s highly unlikely that Apple will use its developer conference next week to showcase a line of redesigned iMac desktop computers,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

Jade reports, “People familiar with the matter say an extensive overhaul to the top-selling Apple consumer desktop machines remains on track for an unveiling later this year, adding that an introduction during company’s Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday would be premature and serve only to disrupt sales of existing models.”

Jade reports, “Apple engineers have been putting extra hours into a pair of radically redesigned 20- and 24-inch iMacs that will be both slimmer and sleeker than today’s offerings. When the project reaches fruition later this year, it will represent the first major industrial design overhaul to hit the flagship all-in-one consumer Apple desktops in nearly three years. Omitted from the makeover will be Apple’s 17-inch iMac model, people familiar with the project have said.”

  1. I’d trust this latest report (AppleInsider) over the previous report that appeared to be wild speculation with unreasonable expections (such as an iMac larger than 24 inches). Now that report was just plain stupid.

  2. hmmm….maybe I was right: no new iMacs but new Pro’s….although the thought of a entrylevel 15″ and 17″ iMac’s would also make sense: 600-700 bucks all in one mac with flatscreen and barebones config. Any thoughts?

  3. The 17″ is a great low-end machine.

All Apple needs to do is offer the base configuration with a combo drive and drop the price to $699 or $799.

The more people use Mac OS X, the better it is for ALL of us!

  4. hmm as I think of it: AppleTV, Mac Mini and iMac….maybe this will turn into one machine: with our without screen. Woul dmake sense from all points of view: spareparts, logistics, marketing etc etc. Too much fragmentation is not good. Just thoughts… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  5. What no iMacs? For reals? Oh, man, that’s a kick in the nuts.

I can’t afford an iPhone, MacPro, or AppleTV.
I don’t need the limited Mac mini.
I don’t want a MacBook or MacBook Pro.

So, what’s that leave me? Nada. Better wait till next year peeps and the 45-nm processors. Maybe by then Apple will come to its senses.

Gawd, I hate negative frickin’ rumors even more than the most promising ones that newer materialize. Sheesh, this latest gossip just killed my fantasy.

  6. If there is going to be multi-touch in leopard, then Steve would have to announce it at WWDC. If Steve announces it at WWDC, then what current hardware would there be to use multi-touch for beta testing? None. It would hurt sales of iMacs as most would wait for the multi-touch iMacs. If Steve announces multi-touch for the OSX in Leopard, then he would have to release a new iMac and/or monitors with multi-touch screens built in. The multi-touch screens would not be operational without leopard or the leopard beta.

If there is multi-touch in Leopard, then there would be new iMacs and monitors.

  7. @ Mr. Reeee

All Apple needs to do is offer the base configuration with a combo drive and drop the price to $699 or $799.

The “Combo Drive” went out with the Sphinx. Apple is one of the few companies who charge extra for it as a DVD burner is standard on most every other PC…

Of course, Apple overcharging for yesterday’s leftovers is nothing new, is it?

  8. Fortunately, Apple has decided not to drop more turkeys on the unsuspecting populace of the planet. Here is hoping that Apple Inc gets out of the computer industry (to which it never really belonged) and stick to making horribly overpriced mp3 players. It is sad that people have been suckered into purchasing computers that are priced hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars more than competing models. Apple is the seller for the rich, no working class person could ever begin to afford the pseudo computers that Steve Jobs suckers the masses into. Since there is no software for these stupid computers, I’m not sure why there is a developer conference. Guess this is yet another publicity stunt to show that someone other then Apple produces anything more then another copy of “The Sims”.

As Windows Vista continues to blow away Macintosh sales we can only hope that the stock holders will vote to throw Steve Jobs out of his overpaid position and put someone in that can produce products “for the rest of us”. In the mean time we can all purchase real computers from HP, Dell and Lenovo and run the only operating system that corporations around the world run — Microsoft Windows.

  9. As Windows Vista continues to blow

    You should’ve stopped right there. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Back on subject: Hard to say what if any new hardware will make WWDC. Leopard news should keep us busy anyway.

Definitely expect something for the iMac in July, in time for the back-to-school and holiday ordering seasons.

  10. WWDC should be primarily about the features in Leopard. Apple should save any announcement or release of new iMacs for after WWDC and the iPhone. That keeps the marketing machine rolling right before the back-to-school season heats up.
