RUMOR: Sting, Dire Straits on board for ‘I want my Apple TV’ campaign
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 - 02:42 PM EST

Apple StoreWe have an unconfirmed rumor that's just too juicy not post for discussion.

If this rumor isn't happening, perhaps Apple should look into it. If it is happening, you heard it here first!

Our anonymous single source from within the music licensing industry tells us that Sting and Dire Straits are on board with Apple Inc. to feature a new TV, Web, and radio campaign for Apple TV that will feature Sting singing an updated lyric from Dire Strait's classic "Money for Nothing" that replaces "I want my... I want my... I want my MTV" with "I want my... I want my... I want my Apple TV."

The deal is for the audio only; neither Sting nor Dire Straits will be appearing in campaign visuals.

MacDailyNews Note: The "Money for Nothing" music video was the first computer generated music video shown on MTV (created on a Bosch FGS-4000 CGI system, according to Wikipedia) and the first video shown on MTV Europe when the network launched on August 1, 1987.

Campaign start dates and visual content for the TV and Web ads are unknown. There may be more than meets the eye to this deal as our source did state, "I'll leave you with two words: 'Police iPod.'"

According to our source, Sting has already recorded the new lyric and Apple has licensed the worldwide rights from Dire Straits' Universal Music Group's Mercury Records' Vertigo Records division. The song was co-written by Dire Straits' leader Mark Knopfler and Sting.

MacDailyNews Take: If true, that certainly is an infectious, repetitive lyric which would seem well-suited to driving the words "Apple TV" into mass awareness.

God I hope not. What a bush move and a lousy song. Apple has more taste than that.

Feb 27, 07 - 02:47 pm Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1.

That's just stupidly obvious and therefore even more lame.

Feb 27, 07 - 02:47 pm Comment from: AshNazg

Long live Sting!

fukc that

i HATE sting and dire straits

eeeurgh

Feb 27, 07 - 02:52 pm Comment from: SJR

It's not that stupid, and at least it would definitely get people's attention. Unlike 99% of radio ads out there today. I've definitely heard of many advertising ideas that are far worse than this one.

Feb 27, 07 - 02:55 pm Comment from: R

Yes, Perry Como, too.

Not. Gonna. Do. It.

Feb 27, 07 - 02:56 pm Comment from: Jamie

"MTV" has three syllables and "Apple TV" has four. Try singing it--it's impossible to make it sound anything but awkward.

I call BS.

Feb 27, 07 - 02:56 pm Comment from: Wade

That just doesn't scan right.

Feb 27, 07 - 02:57 pm Comment from: Wade

Jamie and I are synchronous geniuses....

Feb 27, 07 - 02:57 pm Comment from: Crabster

Meh...

this one's made up...Apple would come up with something better than that...like getting The Police to do it...

Feb 27, 07 - 02:59 pm Comment from: M@c

And now they'll have extra time to run the campaign.

Feb 27, 07 - 03:01 pm Comment from: Ray

I hope not......

What is next? ZZ Top records "Apple TV Dinners" for a commercial??

Just my $0.02

Money for nothing....

isn't that the RIAA anthem already?

Feb 27, 07 - 03:03 pm Comment from: iestynw

Nah that can't be true - Apple are never that cliché.

Feb 27, 07 - 03:04 pm Comment from: pog

Apple does so well picking cool songs for its iPod commercials. The last thing they want to do is associate with fscking Dire Straits and Sting. Its bad enough that they seem linked to U2 (who are only cool if you're >45).

Feb 27, 07 - 03:05 pm Comment from: macaholic

nice one joe!

Feb 27, 07 - 03:13 pm Comment from: ndelc

Wow, I always thought Mac users had good taste in music. Dire Straits isn't my favorite band by any means but I certainly give them credit for being better musicians than most.

That being said, I'm not buying it. The song is too old and too far removed from our collective conscious. Kids today surely have no idea who Dire Straits are, although Sting is still popular. I dunno. Seems unlikely.

Feb 27, 07 - 03:18 pm Comment from: dialtone

Could happen. Remember, TV viewers are generally not as young/cool/mobile as music fans -- or they're so busy having kids that they're no longer *being* kids. So what better way to resonate with middle America but still be hipper than Oprah, Dr. Phil, et al? Maybe they'll get the same animators who did the Money For Nothing video!

ndelc: If Apple fans don't like Dire Straits then they do have good taste in music. Dire Straits are fscking terrible. If I never have to hear their droning Dad rock again in my life I will be extremely happy.

Feb 27, 07 - 03:23 pm Comment from: just one more

Sting and Dire Straits are the best of the last 20 years
just the best here in Europe
would be great!
grin

Feb 27, 07 - 03:32 pm Comment from: Music Critic

People who are ragging on Dire Straits really need to get a copy of their 1982 album "Love Over Gold" and give it a listen. It's one of the best progressive rock albums ever recorded.

Feb 27, 07 - 03:37 pm Comment from: Macview

Whether you like the song and/or performer is irrelevant, it's the recognition factor and the fact the Dire Straits video helped start the music video revolution (at the time anyways) makes it meaningful. I don't know about you, but I want my A T V.

Feb 27, 07 - 03:50 pm Comment from: Bob

Low hanging fruit, don't ya think.

Feb 27, 07 - 04:19 pm Comment from: Raymond from DC

Dire Straits remains one of my favorite bands of the post-classic period. Money for Nothing, however, is hardly my favorite from their epic "Brothers in Arms" album. Suggestion: Try listening to Brothers with an alternate track sequence: 1-4-5-6-9-2-3-7-8. It will take on a whole different flavor.

Perhaps those hawking this rumor are recalling Microsoft's pursuit of the Rolling Stones "Start Me Up" for the release of Windows 95. As the story is told, the Stones weren't interested. Microsoft suggested the Stones name their price. One of the Stones threw out a multi-million dollar figure, hoping Microsoft would go away. Instead they responded something like, "Yeah, we can do that." Anyway, that's how I heard it.

Feb 27, 07 - 04:20 pm Comment from: Cubert

If this does come out, every single person on this forum that just knocked the concept will be saying that it is brilliant!

give me ac/dc , led zep

ha! you think zep is gonna do an Apple ad. You're obviously not a fan.

Feb 27, 07 - 05:07 pm Comment from: Thorin

Dire Straits is (was?) a great band. Brothers In Arms was recorded

and mastered quite well. That said, I think that particular track was

a tad cheesy and would be surprised if this rumor holds true.

Feb 27, 07 - 05:16 pm Comment from: van vaals

it all makes perfect sense, for the police have just anounced their reunion tour

Feb 27, 07 - 05:50 pm Comment from: Jim

Six Blade Knife by Dire Straits is one of my favourite songs, and I'm only 28.

Feb 27, 07 - 06:02 pm Comment from: indy358

Something I think a lot of you are missing is the fact of who will be buying the Apple TV. I would think that most purchasers would be in the 25-45 age range and to most of these people Dire Straits is still a very relevant band. I am 33 years old and grew up with their music. Plus even most younger music conscience people know who Mark Knopfler is. To have Sting singing the song is all the better. He is still popular and the reuniting of The Police make this the perfect time to use him.

Feb 27, 07 - 06:09 pm Comment from: Frank

Sting's voice is not suited to generate enthusiasm..too low keyed and strains when upped.

Feb 27, 07 - 06:50 pm Comment from: Greg

Incredible band, great song (one of those sarcastic, cynical songs whose wit is so dry a lot of people don't get it - "Born in the USA" anyone?)

But no, it's not going to happen. Why?

Because it's CURRENTLY happening. In a campaign by a company called TOYOTA. They sell cars.

"I want my, I want my... MPG"

This is their current campaign to push the fuel efficiency of their cars. Oh, and it uses the exact original Dire Straits music, too (much to my chagrin).

Feb 27, 07 - 06:51 pm Comment from: AppleTeeVee

Wow. People sure don't seem to like Sting anymore, at least on MDN. Anything would be better than the garbage they use for iPod commercials.

Feb 27, 07 - 07:02 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Big fan of Dire Straits and the Police and then Sting (he had a killer backup band in the 80's-Omar Hakim, Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland and Daryl Jones-Holy Shit!)

Of course, the real killer would be the end of Zep's 'Stairway', the lead blaring, and then Plant blurts out "And she's buying an Apple TV".

Feb 27, 07 - 07:08 pm Comment from: Walter Chillum

It's acts like Sting and Dire Straits that caused me to embrace the punk and post punk genre. Moral: taste is relative and don't assume that people will reacte the same way. I'm 52 and my wife's 48. I like bands like Good Charlotte and Greenday. My wife likes Coldplay and Radiohead. It just means that everyone has different tastes.

Feb 27, 07 - 07:11 pm Comment from: Rene

And just as I was reading this on MDN it plays on the radio.

Feb 27, 07 - 07:31 pm Comment from: PowerZach...Apple TV (lame name)

OK, Apple may be hip and cool but common man, Apple TV? LAME! I think this device will fall the wayside just like the stupid Cube. TV and computer just don't mix, at least not in the form of "Apple TV". God I'm sick of all this Apple is the best shit.

I "wanted my Apple TV" this week.

Thanks for the compliment. It really means something to me, what I can't say. The depth of your statement is too big for any mere mortal to understand. Please elaborate on your wisdom oh great being. I'll bet I have more Mac's and Apple shit than you so shut your frickin pie hole.

Maybe the Carpenters should reunite and do the ad.

Feb 28, 07 - 12:38 am Comment from: MasterMacNikon

Something everyone has missed to this point: "I'll leave you with two words: 'Police iPod.'"

Meaning that the U2 iPod will be replaced with a Police Special Edition iPod. I can only imagine the fanboy fallout; especially from the likes of Throutt and Enderle. Pussies. [I don't even care if I spell those *&%^$#'s names correctly; they don't deserve respect]

Feb 28, 07 - 01:27 am Comment from: j

"give me ac/dc , led zep

Why not their music is on Cadillac commercials.

I bet there is not truth to this, too cheesy.

Feb 28, 07 - 09:08 am Comment from: Jeff

"The last thing they want to do is associate with fscking Dire Straits and Sting. Its bad enough that they seem linked to U2 (who are only cool if you're >45)."

Yeah, because today's artists are definitely better. Not. I really believe Rock is dead. I've tried listening to new bands and I like a few, but will any of them be relevant in 10 years? 20 years? Today's rock artists remind me of hip-hop artists in the sense that name one hip-hop artist who's shelf life has lasted more than 5 years. Thats how I see today's rock artists.

I don't see any who are true artists anymore. Maybe it has to do with the labels. Put out an album, tour for 18 months. Take a year off. Record another album.

The artists of the past put out albums every year. 2 years at the most. Artists today milk it for all they can. They lose their creative edge.

For the record, ya'll do recall, don't you, that Sting sang on the original version as well? It was a duet, dudes. wink

Does this mean your TV will crash for no reason at all? Then ask you to 'send report', to which nothing will happen? Will you have to pay for each and every upgrade to your TV, which will make it glitchier and more complicated then before?
