RUMOR: The Beatles to bow on Apple iTunes Store on December 15
Friday, November 06, 2009 - 02:52 PM EST

"According to the Swiss Radio 'Suisse Romande,' Beatles catalog will be available on the iTunes Store on December 15th," linathael notes for HardMac (MacBidouille) in a brief turn of the ol' rumor mill.

Link: here.

MacDailyNews Take: As we've said before, The Beatles arrival in Apple's iTunes Store will be the final imprimatur in the minds of many people beyond a certain age. Yes, Apple's iTunes Store has for some time now been the #1 U.S. music retailer, but you still couldn't buy The Beatles there. When you can, Apple's iTunes Store will become "real" to many millions who've rarely or never purchased a single track online. The latest Rasmussen Reports U.S. survey fond that 69% of adults still say they rarely or never download music with over 80% of those ages 50 and older saying they rarely or never download music, compared to 55% of those 18 to 29. The Beatles' stamp of approval will make iTunes Store and the concept of digital downloads something that's finally worth looking into for many who haven't done so yet. Beyond the fact that there are people born every second who've never heard The Beatles' music, that's the real significance of the arrival of The Beatles in Apple's iTunes Store, not that those of us yet to reach a certain age have long ago ripped our Beatles CDs to iTunes.

Suisse Romande has one of the best sites for breaking news on the web. They also have an iPhone app. If you're a news junkie who can read a little French, check it out.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

Hmmm, I feel like I've heard this before PC.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:03 pm Comment from: m159

The Beatles on iTunes is good and all that, but this breathless notion of some certificate of authenticity is overdone. Rather than define iTunes by its connection to the Beatles, in 2009, I think the opposite is more like it.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:04 pm Comment from: Yawn...

Even if the rumor is true, does this even really matter anymore, Jobs' taste in music aside? Screw the Beatles and their greedy estates.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:05 pm Comment from: Paul Johnson

Will Apple Corps be providing a little USB dongle to securitize our access to iTunes, as they have done with their recently released collection?

Nov 06, 09 - 03:05 pm Comment from: flappo

and ac/dc too

Nov 06, 09 - 03:21 pm Comment from: Dan The Photo Man

With the rollout of Beatles music, it is obvious to me they are trying to make as much money as possible by selling big chunks of music first (CDs, USB drive), then they will let the iTunes stores have a shot at it just in time for Christmas. Well planned business decisions to maximize profit.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:22 pm Comment from: ericdano

Well, if the Beatles could put together a nice LP version of their stuff, that would be great. I'm still waiting for someone to do that for all the CDs.....cuz the album art is really nice.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:22 pm Comment from: DH

What's the big deal ? Most folks have figured a way to get all the Beatles music they want. These folks got too greedy. They waited too long to put the music on iTunes.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:24 pm Comment from: x

Piss on em. They chose to be cagey, thinking they can milk iTunes users for all their worth.

Listen, you Beatle asswipes. You fiddled farted around too long and I got your music by other means. Take your gouging prices and shove them up that ono or whatever the sluts name is arse.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:25 pm Comment from: Grego

What do bugs have to do with iTunes?

Nov 06, 09 - 03:25 pm Comment from: Always Right

After the Beatles,
all 67 album's of ZAPPA, please.

Thanks for your contribution, x.
Very enlightening, and well spoken, you are.

This reminds me of the latest Get a Mac ad, "Promises". Instead of John Hodgeman promising the latest Windows won't have the problems of the last version, they should have a Paul McCartney lookalike promising this rumor won't be like the last one.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:45 pm Comment from: BronsonVanDam

Who are "The Beatles"?

Nov 06, 09 - 03:47 pm Comment from: Studio8H

I have all the LPs' and CDs - even bought a couple of the new mixes on CD. Ripped and ready to rock. You waited too long, boys. Really don't need to buy from iTunes any more. I suspect the release will be seriously underwhelming.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:48 pm Comment from: ron

I said it earlier, most Beatles fans, (including myself) already have just about every one of their songs already on our Macs & iPhones.
Us old farts still like them.

Nov 06, 09 - 03:51 pm Comment from: papasmack

@BronsonVanDam you beat me to it smile

Nov 06, 09 - 03:52 pm Comment from: Quad Core

I am a HUGE Beatles fan, but haven't heard any of their songs in years because they aren't on iTunes. Finally, I can hear them again.

Nov 06, 09 - 04:03 pm Comment from: Overlook00

No need for them on iTunes. They have been shoved down our throats since 1964. Oldies radio every hour on the hour for free. Every crazy ol men coming in my record store asking for the same one and only band, as if nothing else ever happened, as if no other band existed. Documentary after documentary, music critic after music critic trying tho make them out to be the best thing ever. They aint! Kepp them off itunes, we have suffered enough with the hype machine already.

Nov 06, 09 - 04:06 pm Comment from: Zukuzu

They like to sell Beatles in bundles. Before iTunes we'll probably see a Beatles edition of Time Capsule wink

Nov 06, 09 - 04:09 pm Comment from: iPhoner

RUMOR: Everybody that wanted Beatles songs already has them.

Nov 06, 09 - 04:27 pm Comment from: RL

Who are the Beatles?

Day late and a 100 million dollars short.

The Beatles or whoever controls the rights to the music really screwed the pooch on this one. Anybody who really wanted The Beatles have been forced to get them via the torrents since there was no way to buy them legally via online.

Obla Di life goes on.

Nov 06, 09 - 04:29 pm Comment from: TowerTone

I wonder if it will be a French or a German bow.....

Nov 06, 09 - 04:36 pm Comment from: Jon

@TowerTone

They're British. It'll be a long bow.

Nov 06, 09 - 05:10 pm Comment from: dave

Available for the low low price of $24.99/album (sorry, no picking and choosing what you want).

Nov 06, 09 - 05:48 pm Comment from: GlassHollow

Geez, yes they were great back 40 years ago. . . they wouldn't be today.

What about AC/DC why are they still holding out?
Who cares about the Beetles anyway, yea I'm old also.

Nov 06, 09 - 06:19 pm Comment from: ron

"They're British. It'll be a long bow."

Funny! They're still grabbing their ankles over there.

What do you know! Three spellings of there in one sentence.

Nov 06, 09 - 06:34 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

I'd sooner believe the second coming of Christ!

Nov 06, 09 - 06:49 pm Comment from: TigerCliff

Well, it's going to happen sometime. I'll be glad just so the rumor doesn't get dug up over and over again. Release it already.

I suppose the releases will have iTunes LP electronic packaging. I'm sure it'll be cool, but like everyone else who's interested in the band, I have everything in my iTunes library.

Oh... and on the statistics of older people not downloading music... are they buying that much (non-classical) music anyway? I'd guess not. They're not rushing to get the new Fergie or Miley single anyway. Their "new" purchases are likely the new Nora Jones CD every other year.

Nov 06, 09 - 06:58 pm Comment from: GregoriusM

Wikipedia:

"... (Michael) Jackson and Sony merged their music publishing businesses in 1995, becoming joint owners of most of the Lennon-McCartney songs recorded by The Beatles.

Do you think Sony might have had something to do with the hold up?

And if they did, why am I not surprised?

Nov 06, 09 - 07:24 pm Comment from: One more

The sad legacy of the Beatles: incredible music. Lousy business management. Neil Aspenall totally hosed it by standing in the way of progress. Eventually, he got pushed aside. But the writers of Revolution sadly missed the iTunes revolution.

If this rumor actually has legs, it would be great, and possibly a big seller for the holidays. But when you look at the history of the Beatles, one big black mark has been atrocious management since the untimely death of Brian Epstein. It's likely cost them billions of dollars. The cynic inside you is probably saying, "yeah, right - like they need MORE money." But when you see such an incredible product so badly managed, that's a tragedy.

Many of you are regulars here, and your favorite sport is to complain. So I read many of your comments with my typical filter. I think mainstream consumers will have a different point of view than many of you. But with iTunes now the largest music distribution channel on Earth, it will be interesting to see if a younger audience embraces the four lads from Liverpool, or if rapidly aging boomers such as myself will be the only ones excited should this actually come to pass.

Given the stories that Apple Corps has been at work remastering the Beatles' song library, I'm among the optimists.

Cross your fingers. Let's hope that this time, it's for real. And maybe then, we can put decades of useless acrimony, lawsuits and bad business decisions behind us.

Considering the fact that 90% of today's pop music is garbage, your statement would be funny if it weren't so stupid. People who arrogantly dismiss everything that's older than they are should think twice before advertising their complete ignorance so openly.

Nov 06, 09 - 07:54 pm Comment from: disposableidentity

@ MacDailyNews Take, not sure about that one.

At this point it's iTunes that's bigger than Jesus.

Nov 06, 09 - 09:26 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

If they're going to do it, it makes sense to do do before the post-Christmas gift card season.

Nov 06, 09 - 11:48 pm Comment from: dialtone

Anyone notice that the Beatles Apple/USB release will be 24 bit? It seems people were moaning and groaning about that for a while.

Nov 07, 09 - 05:36 am Comment from: Daniel

OK, a year or two ago this couldve been big news. but now? seriously, everyone who gives a shit about the beatles...its too late now, weve already downloaded them from bittorrent, etc.

Nov 07, 09 - 07:48 am Comment from: Macdoc

BFD.....Beatles'? We don't want no stinkn Beatles'!!

Nov 07, 09 - 03:14 pm Comment from: Over 30, Under 50

Contrary to MDN take, I can't see the arrival of Beatles tunes as having much influence on the over-50 crowd in terms of their interest in downloading music. Each downloaded track becomes another digital file to manage, whereas simply flipping on an oldies station (airwaves or streaming audio) provides a pleasant enough stroll down memory lane, without any files to back up afterwards.
