RUMOR: Thinner iBook replacement ‘MacBook’ to debut tomorrow in choice of black or white
Monday, May 08, 2006 - 09:54 AM EST

"Additional sources have confirmed the MacBook's announcement this Tuesday. Further, sources report that the MacBook will be thinner than current iBooks, will be available in both black and white configurations, and will likely cost slightly more than previous iBook models—not unlike the price increase Apple's Mac mini saw with its transition to Intel processors," Think Secret briefly mentions.

In addition, Think Secret reports that 17-inch MacBook Pro units will hit users' hot little hands this week and we can confirm that tracking reports of our 17-inch MacBook Pro order and several other MacDailyNews readers' all show delivery dates of May 10th.

Thinner? Thinner generally means "more expensive" - not the best trade-off for an entry-level machine.

May 08, 06 - 10:03 am Comment from: Frank

It'll be sad to see my little clamshell ibook go. CC ready for the new iBook (plz plz plz plz plz no integrated graphics).

May 08, 06 - 10:03 am Comment from: Suicidal Gingerbread Man

I have a bad feeling this will be the only alternative I have for an under 15'' Apple portable.

Has the 12'' PB been placed on EOL?

May 08, 06 - 10:04 am Comment from: whatever

rise AAPL, daddy needs a new pair of ibooks..

May 08, 06 - 10:05 am Comment from: natis

please please please let this happen tomorrow. got a nice sized gift certificate for my b-day back in early march that i've been hold onto for a new intel ibook.

May 08, 06 - 10:05 am Comment from: andy

the change to intel should not increase mac prices, they get slammed for being 'expensive' all the time and this doesnt help, the mini had potential and then they priced it out of the market without a low low end model like previously. plus i thought intel were cheaper than ibm chips and that apple got a speacial pre-release and price because of the muilti-core technology they helped provide from aim?

May 08, 06 - 10:08 am Comment from: JadisOne

If this is true, then I can get a shiny black one to match my iPod. Sweet.

May 08, 06 - 10:09 am Comment from: macnut222

"plus i thought intel were cheaper than ibm chips and that apple got a speacial pre-release and price because of the muilti-core technology they helped provide from aim?"

That's why you take rumors and rumblings with a grain of salt.

May 08, 06 - 10:11 am Comment from: ajags

all this wait is driving me crazy!!!! (please no integrated graphics)

May 08, 06 - 10:13 am Comment from: DLMeyer

Frank,
The Integrated Graphics we saw in the mini were not there just to save space, they are key to low cost. If you really need great graphics in a laptop you need to open your wallet a lot wider - or, at least enough to max out the memory. The graphics card in this iBook G4 (what I'm typing on now) may be no great shakes but has never failed to meet my needs.

Don't :( , Be wink - that you'll be getting a little extra screen real estate to reduce side-scrolling.

May 08, 06 - 10:20 am Comment from: Jooop

I too will miss the aluminum 12" powerbook, it has served me well. However, I'm sure the 13" widescreen iBook will be just as portable, yet more powerful, so I don't think there's any real reason to feel too bad about it.

And now, finally, thanks to BootCamp, when my Dell Latitude goes back in a couple months, my company will get me an iBook!!

May 08, 06 - 10:23 am Comment from: 17" Macbook Pro

Just tracked my order for the 17" MBP. It's on the truck for delivery today! Yey!!! It shipped out from Shanghai May 6th, and it's already here on the 8th. Boy, that was fast!!!

May 08, 06 - 10:26 am Comment from: Pete

My 17" MacBook Pro arrived this morning!!!
(It had a scheduled delivery date of Wednesday 10th).

May 08, 06 - 10:30 am Comment from: Stegg

Anyone have any idea how that intel integrated graphics card might handle World of Warcraft?

May 08, 06 - 10:31 am Comment from: Tonnemanski

The wait is almost over to make a choice which model to buy (macbook/macbook pro, 13/15/19 inch) All models are soon available. Tommorrow I know what I am going to have, do you ??

May 08, 06 - 10:34 am Comment from: duper

Tonnemanski.

You might have to wait awhile for the 19 inch.

May 08, 06 - 10:39 am Comment from: Ampar

Sign me up. But yes, I'll take this rumor with a cube of salt.

May 08, 06 - 10:43 am Comment from: Macaday

iPods were more expensive than the other craap on the market 4 years ago.

Apple are doing the same again - creating products that people will really really WANT...and therefore find the money to get them.

More expensive MacBooks are fine.

May 08, 06 - 10:57 am Comment from: dub, the grammar freak

"...MacBook Pro units will hit users hot little hands..."

Notice the comma.

"...MacBook Pro units will hit users' hot little hands..."

May 08, 06 - 11:11 am Comment from: Mike K

They will be more expensive because.

1. Core-duo chips cost almost 2x more than g4 chips.

2. The 13" widescreen LCD will cost Apple $143, which is about $20 more than the current 12" and 14" LCD.

3. iSight Cam

4. Mag-safe connector and latch

5. Remote

Because of all the additional costs, the base model will most likely come in at $1099.. Not that Apple is price-gouging, it's just the new MacBooks cost more to manufacture.

The rumors that Intel chips would be cheaper were just that, RUMORS.

May 08, 06 - 11:14 am Comment from: Big Al

Uh, dub, that's not a comma, it's an apostrophe.

May 08, 06 - 11:21 am Comment from: RS

May 08, 06 - 11:23 am Comment from: G Spank

Apple's entry level machines need to come DOWN in price, not go up. So sad...

May 08, 06 - 11:37 am Comment from: Ray

All laptops should have dual head vid cards as standard.

I hope Apples puts that in the MacBook.

May 08, 06 - 11:38 am Comment from: NotDub

Bless his heart, poor Dub,s got bad grammar, y'all. He sounds like Dubya.

May 08, 06 - 11:38 am Comment from: clyde

Wonder what the performance specs will be on it, compared to the macbook pro's?

Will it have a integrated graphics like the mini to keep power users buying the pros? Or will the difference be more narrow, as in the last generation g4 powerbooks and ibooks?

The pricing of this product may be precipitious; it may be difficult to hit a price/performance 'sweet spot' between the mac mini and the 17" imac.

If it's $1100, there will be a lot of people killing themselves to get this model assuming that they don't dumb it down too much.

May 08, 06 - 11:39 am Comment from: ndelc

Regarding the integrated graphics in the Intel minis, everything I've read said that they are superior to the dedicated graphics chips that the G4 minis had. We need to get away from the old ideas of what things were, and look at how they are. Just like the switch to Intel. When SJ first announced that they were going to Intel chips, everyone said, "Ewww! I don't want a Pentium in my Mac!", but we didn't get Pentiums, we got Cores which are much better. The new integrated graphics are not like we've known them in the cheap PCs of yesterday. Give it a chance.

Apple sponsoring a seminar on Wednesday on "new" iBooks. Notice they didn't use MacBook yet, to try to avoid releasing too much info.

May 08, 06 - 11:50 am Comment from: Settle Down, Children

If you're crazy enough to buy the first machines falling off the end of the assembly line, you've got more money than brains.

May 08, 06 - 11:51 am Comment from: drmacnut

Let's not get our knickers in a twist about this integrated graphics thing until we see the results of Apple making such a move. Make sure to max out your RAM in any case.

I am sure the MacBook is going to provide better performance than the currently shipping top-end iBook and PowerBook 12" models are now.

It's going to be sad to say goodbye to the PowerBook 12". It is a great little workhorse!

May 08, 06 - 11:52 am Comment from: Jooop

Suicidal: Thanks for the link. Did you notice on that page the text that reads:

Overview
Hear about the most affordable iBook ever.

That makes me doubt all the rumors that are saying "oh noes! It's going to cost $2000 for sure!"

May 08, 06 - 12:00 pm Comment from: Suicidal Gingerbread Man

Joop.

You're right. Let's hope for a real competitive price point for the new MacBook.

Or else the seminar will be: "Let me tell you about the most affordable iBook ever. The one we just discontinued!!"

May 08, 06 - 12:03 pm Comment from: @dub, the grammar freak

You're a lousy grammar Nazi. It's an apostrophe that's missing, not a comma.

You need periods before the elipses because the sentences end. This means four dots, not three. As well, in each sentence there should be a space between the period and the first elipsis dot, and between each of the following elipsis dots. I could go on, but. . . .

The depths to which America's education systems have fallen are beyond measure.

Remember the talk before the switch to Intel that by switching to Intel the price of the computers would go down, due to supply?

Whatta joke.

May 08, 06 - 12:32 pm Comment from: DJ

Dear Dub, the grammar freak...

... good to see someone at least trying to guard the bastions of our language.

I doubt that US schools are much worse than UK ones. It's hardly the teachers' fault though: they get their sights changed continually by interfering politicians.

Hey ho! I do hope to see a black MacBook; it'll go with my iPod video.

May 08, 06 - 12:38 pm Comment from: Hugin

"The depths to which America's education systems have fallen are beyond measure."

I do not know that the American "education system" is particularly bad. What I do know is that @dub has a problem both with spelling and word meaning. The first dub correctly pointed out a grammar error, but apparently did not know the word "apostrophe." @dub does not know the meaning of the word "grammar." He correctly pints out the misuse of the word "comma," but then goes on to criticize some typographical misdeeds, thinking that grammar and typography are the same. To top it off, he (she?) consistently misspells "ellipsis."

May 08, 06 - 12:43 pm Comment from: ndelc

"Remember the talk before the switch to Intel that by switching to Intel the price of the computers would go down, due to supply?"

Actually, I recall hearing the exact opposite - that Intel chips cost more than the PowerPC chips across the board.

May 08, 06 - 01:56 pm Comment from: OzzysCross101

black? hmmm I don;t know. The black iPods are hideous- imagine a 12-14 inch notebook?? How is that supposed to stand out with all the other competitors black notebooks?

"Is grammar an adequate substitute for sex?"

Definitely not. It is just that for some of us it is the best we can hope for.

May 08, 06 - 02:47 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

"the change to intel should not increase mac prices,"

Not if they are duel core chips. Also keep in mind that Apple is replacing G4 chips, not G5's. G4's should be extra extra cheep this late in the game.

So, will this run Aperture?
