In their finite wisdom, Toronto District School Board wants to phase out Macs for Windows PCs – January 22, 2010
Just now, a source has tipped us that the Toronto District School Board have just purchased 3,200 Apple MacBooks for a significant portion of their teachers.
If our source’s information is correct, it looks like someone came to their senses!
Congrats to the lucky teachers! Now, how about some new Mac goodness for the students, too?

My ex – who works for TDSB, had mentioned the earlier move towards windows. Neither of us could figure it out.

We are the only Mac school in our county (everyone else forced on windows pc a couple years back) and have no desire to switch. Our teachers are very happy. Over 400 macs for ten years now and never a virus or problem!
Sounds like the head of IT at Toronto Schools found a new job or got whacked over the head for being a fool. Either way sounds like the mistake was corrected.

Similar at the Chem Dept of my old uni in Oz. They held out bravely in the late 1990s when all around them were falling to the blandishments, and then directives, of ITS’s so-called experts to ‘get modern’ and go Windas. Result: all other departments at the uni have had unending waves of virus attacks and catastrophic downtimes over the last decade, while Chemistry has had … NONE (zip, nada).

Why does every conversation on MDN have to devolve into dumb political attacks. The fact that Macs are mainstream means that you have a lot of conservatives and liberals that use them. You can’t assume one or the other.
And for that matter, people make computer decisions independent of their political leanings. I’m a conservative and I love Macs and have helped a lot of people convert over the years.
Let’s celebrate our common love for Macs instead of making stupid comments that only divide us. The politicians are doing enough to divide us as it is.

Anyway, it looks like there is at least one smart guy in Toronto….we love our Macs here in Montreal. I am sure those teachers will too.
And to our American friends…do not let the term conservative fool you into thinking that our conservatives are like yours. They are not. Ours have gone away from the center having been taken over by a Reformist (far right wing).
Far right enough that I am sure even Republicans would feel uncomfortable….at least Bush invested in science instead of cutting back on it.

Back on topic: I’m sure the folks in Toronto are very happy with the decision, assuming the rumor is true.
The idjit tech challenged school boards get sold a bill of cheap “wonder” goods from PCrap makers unknowingly stepping into the TCO nightmare known as Windows and Windows race to the bottom quality hardware. Schools don’t have the money for all the extra support costs hidden within every craptastic Windows machine.
