RUMOR: Ultra-thin, ulra-light MacBook Pro coming from Apple by year end
Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 03:40 PM EST

"Trusted sources informed MacScoop that Apple is headed towards the release of a notebook that is so small and light that it could redefine the standards of ultra-portable computing," Alexandros Roussos reports for MacScoop.

"The new notebook is likely to complete the MacBook Pro line-up with a smaller version featuring a 12 inch display," Roussos reports.

"the new notebook is said to be half as thick, or something between 0.6 and 0.7 inch (15 to 18 millimetres). It will also be, by far, the lightest computer Apple ever released, or less than 3 pounds (<1.36Kg)," Roussos reports.

Rumors rumors rumors.. New iMacs first please!

Jul 10, 07 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Jack

I have this feeling...that we may need to prime ourselves for something besides "just" an ultrathin book. What about a new book that has a double-sided monitor all with multi-touch? Either side could function as the keyboard. We now know the keyboard doesn't need to actually be present (see iPhone). What does everyone think? Too expensive? Technically unrealistic at this stage?

Jul 10, 07 - 02:50 pm Comment from: Jack

PS--that could have been what Steve mean when he said there was stuff in the pipeline that would blow away everything (I'm paraphrasing).

Jul 10, 07 - 02:56 pm Comment from: Camel's Milk Drinker

For goodness sake Apple inc. give us a chance to build up some funds!!!!

It is going to take me a year to convert all that Camel's Milk I couldn't get to the iphone iqueue's to sell into cheese. Which I hope to sell for a premium so that I can afford a new Mac Book Pro with Leopard pre-installed!!!

WHOA! SLOW DOWN

Jul 10, 07 - 03:09 pm Comment from: iMat

I just bought a MacBook PRO 15", so this should only be rumors imo raspberry

Jul 10, 07 - 03:18 pm Comment from: Unfettered

This should sell well in Japan. I remember the little Duo notebooks, and the 2400 which were very popular there. And for many people, the retired 12" PowerBook was ideal (we owned two of them in my family) with features not available in the iBooks. I know there are many who prefer the smaller form factor and are willing to forego a larger screen.

Now were Apple to consider a high-dpi display as they have done via an optional upgrade to the 17" MBP, then folks could have more than a paltry XVGA 1024x768 desktop. And with Leopard's reported resolution-independence, this might be more likely than my pure speculation would imply.

Jul 10, 07 - 03:21 pm Comment from: Marcintosh

Take the phone stuff out of the iPhone, add some I/O connectivity such as USB, FW, PCMCIA, Ethernet, external monitor, put all that hardware under a nice 12" tactile display, and boom : you get a multi-touch ultra portable Mac.

Jul 10, 07 - 03:30 pm Comment from: Anders

@Jack

Yes, your feeling is great!!!
Let's see if Apple imitates 2007 Microsoft's vision from 2002. This would make Ballmer literally 5 years ahead!

@Anders:

The problem is that it's always Apple that brings it enmass. It does not matter what MS says. If they can't produce it, they are non-players.

Jul 10, 07 - 04:05 pm Comment from: BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

Ballmer is not ahead of anything, because he talks while Apple delivers. The first to market is the one "ahead".

Jul 10, 07 - 04:10 pm Comment from: livin & learnin

Any new 12" Pro must have back-lit keyboard !

Jul 10, 07 - 04:14 pm Comment from: Predrag

Cool down, folks. 12" sub-notebook from Apple is fiction. It is gone from the lineup because it had dismal sales. It wasn't worth it then, and it won't be worth it now. Even 17" monster is much, much more popular than 12". I can understand how some of you may salivate over this, but you are very rare birds. Most of us find 15 inches perfection for a notebook size. Its weight, its dimensions, portability, screen size is about as ideal as it possibly gets. Photoshop jockeys tend to tilt towards 17", but very, very few lean to the other side.

There will always be some Acer, or Toshiba, or Sony with a 12" offering (or even smaller... Libretto?). For Apple, it just makes no business sense.

Jul 10, 07 - 04:19 pm Comment from: MB

I will probably buy one of these because I need a new notebook. What I REALLY want first is a new Imac, not sure how much longer I can go without a new desktop.

Apple needs an ultra-portable for the Asian market.

Jul 10, 07 - 04:33 pm Comment from: Wil

I f#$king called this months ago. 11" subnotebook Macbook.

You all know it.

Jul 10, 07 - 04:46 pm Comment from: T

That will be a very hot grill plate!

Jul 10, 07 - 05:08 pm Comment from: Road Warrior

Hopefully it will married to a cell phone, include GPS, a +5 mega pixel zoom camera with night vision, iChat over the phone and VOIP.

Fully flash based, with plenty of space, no cd drive, no hard drive either.

Full keyboard, not that touch screen iPhone thing that's causing problems already (accidentially clicking links when trying to enlarge web pages)

A laser projector would be a nice touch.

Imagine proping the 12" Mac Book Pro up and projecting a image on nearby wall?

AWESOME!!!

Jul 10, 07 - 05:47 pm Comment from: nano nano

There are also reports of the upcoming MacBook nano. If you think the rumors above are cool, the MacBook Nano will knock your socks off.

First, this baby is thin. We're talkin' microscopically thin. Viewed from the side, the MacBook nano is only .3 microns thick, so thin that it doubles as a handy straight razor when you're traveling. It not only computes, but it slices, dices and lowers the prices! Compared to the rumored MacBook Pro, the new MacBook nano makes the Pro look like the big fat schmo that it will be. Thin is in, folks. And with the MacBook nano, you'll be totally stylin'!

But wait, there's more! There's no need for pesky hard drives - that was so very last year. The MacBook nano uses the latest static RAM technology for crash-proof results, super high speeds and vast amounts of memory. Forget measily gigabytes or terabytes. The MacBook nano can be outfitted with up to 15 exabytes of rich, foamy RAM. The result: a laptop that kicks butt on IBM supercomputers, all in a package that even Paris Hilton would go back to jail to have. It's the fashion accessory with the power of a Ferrari Enzo, and all for just $2K US.

Wait!! It gets even better! Forget batteries. Forget messy fuel cells. The MacBook nano is powered by a sliver of the finest imported Iranian Plutonium, giving the nano a half life of over 30 years. You'll never need to worry about recharging through the life of the computer! Sure, there will be small issues with radiation poisoning, but that's a small price to pay for having the sleekest laptop around. And if you're cornered in some hostile part of the world, the MacBook nano makes a handy tactical nuclear weapon to keep Windows zealots and islamic fundamentalists at bay.

So there you have it. Get ready for the MacBook nano. It's coming soon!!! I think. Well, we're pretty sure. At least that's what a friend of ours who knows a guy who knows somebody at Apple told us. Oh, whatever. If you heard it here on these message boards, then it MUST be true!!!!!

Jul 10, 07 - 05:50 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

What I would prefer to see is a 15" that is about as thick as the one that I have now, that takes multiple batteries.

10-hour battery life would be the shit. smile

Jul 10, 07 - 05:53 pm Comment from: livin & learnin

I want - I want - the slicing dicing straight razor 15 exabyte tactical nuke, hold the Cd drive please !!!!!

Ever notice that these rumors are always from "Trusted Sources."

We never see rumors from "Untrusted Sources" or "none-too-reliable sources" or "The E-mail I received anonymously sources"

Believe it when you see it, not when a rumor site posts it.

According to Digitimes, Apple has placed orders for both 15" and 13" LED displays. The 15" have already gone into the MacBook Pro, and the 13" are scheduled to arrive a few months after ..

The MacBook has only just recently undergone a revision, and it is unusual for a second (ie. addition of LED screens) to come so soon after. This gives the real possibility that the 13" screens are on order for another product ... could this be the MacBook 'Thin'??

In any case, economies of scale will be quite important with the new, more costly LED screens, and what better way to increase your order and drive down costs but to build them into BOTH the MacBook and the MacBook Thin? ...........

In conclusion, MacBook Thin is very likely to be 13".

Is that thing going to be a tablet? 15mm. Not that much thicker than iPhone. MacBook is 27,5mm. There's no room for Ethernet connector in 15mm frame.

Or maybe it has ULV processor, Flash memory, no optical drive.

so small and light that it could redefine the standards of ultra-portable computing," Alexandros Roussos reports for MacScoop.

Like way smaller and lighter than the new 1.9 pound core 2 widescreen 12" toshiba R500?

Smaller and lighter than the 1.2 pound Sony UMPC?

Can't wait!

Jul 13, 07 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Money for a light small Portable

I hope Apple makes this one. I am holding my cash till they do. no iphone, no new desktop and not ever one of the oversized macbooks or pros. The 12-inch G4 is as big and heavy as I want to lug around the country. There are lots of us who travel for work and need a light small machine - plug into a bigger monitor at home or office and use a desktop machine for DESKTOP sized tasks.

When it arrives it will be the core purchase for me then I will add the ipone and a pro desktop machine. But without that small notebook even the next OS is not worth the trouble. Consider that once you get a set of perfectly functioning and compatible machines you may feel a speed need but everything works and is paid for. Why carry an over sized "portable" maybe you don't remember a the "portable wonder" of the Kaypro. Come on Apple rock the world again make laptops really portable.

Jul 14, 07 - 07:13 am Comment from: RockMyWorld

"Come on Apple rock the world again make laptops really portable."

PC companies already did that (around 2.5 lb for a 12" laptop with built in DVD burner). it's time for Apple to follow and come up with it's own small lightweight laptops.
