RUMOR: Unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro with fixed internal battery, new Mac mini coming Tuesday
Monday, January 05, 2009 - 09:15 AM EDT

"Apple as early as Tuesday will introduce a 17-inch MacBook Pro with a fixed internal battery and a new version of the Mac mini, both of which will feature chipsets from NVIDIA, AppleInsider has been able to independently confirm," Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro's "battery will be fixed in place and not easily removable by users, similar to the MacBook Air's," Jade reports.

"Additionally, AppleInsider can also confirm that a similarly-timed makeover to the Mac mini will see the diminutive desktop adopt chipsets from NVIDIA's MCP79 platform," Jade reports.

"In addition to sporting both a Mini DisplayPort and a Mini DVI connector, it's now also rumored that the new Mac mini will see the addition of a FireWire 800 port and a fifth USB port, with the legacy FireWire 400 port going away," Jade reports.

"RUMOR: Unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro with fixed internal battery, new Mac mini coming Tuesday." The magic word is RUMOR, that does not mean FACT. It is alleged, not proven. my dictionary states:

rumor |ˈroōmər| ( Brit. rumour)
noun
a currently circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth : they were investigating rumors of a massacre | rumor has it that he will take a year off.

verb ( be rumored)
be circulated as an unverified account : [with clause ] it's rumored that he lives on a houseboat | [with infinitive ] she is rumored to have gone into hiding.

ORIGIN late Middle English : from Old French rumur, from Latin rumor ‘noise.’

Not sure what RGKahn's point is. MDN is a site that aggregates articles regarding Apple and the Mac. These articles range from news stories, to opinions, commentaries, as well as rumours. Clearly, we are all aware that, since Apple hasn't officially announced anything, we'll all continue to speculate until early Tuesday morning. Even when the dust settles on that, sometime Tuesday afternoon, we'll begin to speculate what is the next big announcement.

Unlike others, who announce products months in advance, Apple almost never announces anything it can't ship on the same day. Obviously, people investing into Apple would like to know as early as possible what Apple will ship in the future, so that they can asses the profitability of that product as early in advance as possible. Those who have followed Apple long enough, as well as those with some inside contact in Apple, will continue to try and either gues, or provide confidential leaks to the public that seems to be hungry for it.

In other words, as long as there are so many rumour sites regarding Apple, there will be rumour mills feeding their audience.

Apple uses surprise product announcements for unpaid ADVERTISING.

In effect, the press gives Apple millions of dollars worth of free print, web and airtime commercial promotions.

I try not to get too worked up about possible product announcements. Usually the rumors are only partially right. I used to get disappointed, but learned not to waste too much energy on the whole exercise.

Apple product speculation and rumor following IS a lot of fun, though!

I'm ok with FW800. You can always get a 800-to-400 adapter. I'm just glad it is rumored to have FW. And the fifth USB would be nice since Apple has put USB in ipod/iphone -- if you have multiple devices the extra port would be nice.

While I expect both products, I doubt a fixed battery would be done for a performance laptop, and I expect the mini to be short a firewire port, though I hope not.
