RUMOR: Verizon and Apple testing CDMA iPhone on Verizon’s 4G LTE network
Monday, October 19, 2009 - 12:04 PM EST

"We all know that Verizon started testing their 4G network earlier this year and that Verizon plans to roll out their LTE network on the 700 MHz spectrum sometime next year," FoneFrenzy reports.

"My sources have confirmed that Apple and Verizon have been testing a CDMA iPhone on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Yes, you read that correctly, Verizon and Apple have been testing the first 4G phone on Verizon’s 4G network," FoneFrenzy reports. "The tests have been taking place for the last couple of months but with no confirmation on the release date."

FoneFrenzy reports, "It would make good fiscal sense for Apple (and Verizon) to release the first CDMA iPhone right here in the United States running on Verizon’s new 4G network, with announcement expected in 2010 at Apple’s WWDC."

It will only work if it's "snappy".

Oct 19, 09 - 11:09 am Comment from: ManMan

It will never happen.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:10 am Comment from: Bunsen Honeydew

I was under the impression LTE would merge techs - CDMA and GSM.

I guess I was wrong.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:11 am Comment from: HMCIV

The Droid Commercial flies directly in the face of this rumor. That or Verizon's marketing department made a career ending mistake.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:12 am Comment from: Tflint

Why would Apple make a phone for the Christian Medical & Dental Association?

Oct 19, 09 - 11:13 am Comment from: Olmecmystic

I thought 4G LTE wasn't CDMA anymore.

Just a thought.

If true, though, look for Apple's iPhone sales to go through the roof in the U.S. and for A T & T's numbers to take a hit.

Peace.

Olmecmystic cool smile

@ManMan is right. Steve Jobs does not forget.

And besides, the commercial may be produced by Motorola, but it was co-announced with Verizon and http://www.droiddoes.com redirects to a verizon-operated site.

It'll be a cold day before Verizon gets a 4G iPhone. . . They'll have to kowtow all the way up to Cupertino, hat-in-hand.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:15 am Comment from: itpromike

Does Verizon LTE remedy the extremely lame limitation of CDMA that you can't use voice and data at the same time? Until that is addressed, I'm sticking with AT&T;.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:18 am Comment from: iStepchild

AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!! It doesn't line up with Verizons latest
anti-Apple and AT&T;ads and Steve already gave them first chance,
and now it doesn't line up with AT&T;relations. Sorry!

Oct 19, 09 - 11:21 am Comment from: Bizlaw

Verizon needs something to "compete" with the iPhone until it gets the iPhone. Thus, Droid.

Verizon will get the iPhone. Steve may be upset at Verizon, but they have too many potential iPhone users to ignore forever. It's too smart of a business move not to do.

Also, don't forget that the reason Verizon doesn't have the iPhone already is that Apple was trying to get a share of the monthly revenue. Once other countries shot down this arrangement, Apple gave up on it and moved to a conventional subsidized phone model.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:24 am Comment from: steve32465

I'd buy one if it's is a true 4G!

Oct 19, 09 - 11:41 am Comment from: Tony

Sorry, but that site is not reputable and there is no reason for us to believe their "sources". Verizon will NOT get the iPhone for quite some time, if ever. Apple should stick with AT&T;and open it up in the U.S. to include T-Mobile. That would give people at least a little more choice without having to build a whole new phone to support their network.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:42 am Comment from: Cascadians

The commercials making fun of their own phone will be interesting. Schizoid.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:49 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

@ Bunsen Honeydew --

The way I understand it, the phone needs an alternative signal to fall back on for when the LTE network is unavailable, similar to the way a 3G phone will use Edge when 3G is unavailable.

If the iPhone were to operate on an LTE network, that has CDMA running behind it, that would make the phone very unreliable in areas with poor LTE coverage, as is guaranteed to be the case, at least initially, and in "lower priority" areas.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:56 am Comment from: chabig

I don't think Apple would be put off by Verizon's latest Droid ads. Business is business. Apple and Verizon aren't partners today. But if there is money to be made, they will gladly partner up.

Oct 19, 09 - 11:59 am Comment from: pastrychef

I'm with ManMan and HMCIV on this one. I call bull.

Oct 19, 09 - 12:09 pm Comment from: Gregg Thurman

Anybody that thinks Verizon is going to get the iPhone doesn't understand the technical differences between GSM and CDMA. GSM is a far better technology, which is why it dominates worldwide.

There won't be a CDMA version of the iPhone. LTE or not, Verizon would be going backwards technically.

Oct 19, 09 - 12:11 pm Comment from: sMac

Is there a map for that?

Oct 19, 09 - 12:12 pm Comment from: R2

There's more than one way to advertise a new product. No way in hell Verizon launched that campaign knowing that a Verizon iPhone was right around the corner.

I think this person simply has a source with dated info. Yeah, there WAS a CDMA and/or LTE based iPhone in the works for Verizon but the deal fell through for some reason. Happens all the time where a source is working with old information and plans that have since been changed.

Oct 19, 09 - 12:18 pm Comment from: jbella

From what I understand LTE is not a CMDA based technology, and certainly has nothing to do with CDMA phones as currently implemented by Verizon and Sprint. LTE can, however, seamlessly pass between LTE and CMDA or GSM networks if the phone has the proper hardware. That is a given because Verizon will be living with an LTE / CDMA mixed network for quite a while. In the meantime, AT&T;will be living with an LTE / GSM network for quite a while as well. The question is, will Apple create an LTE / GSM phone that will work on Verizon's LTE network only.. or will they try to create a phone with LTE / CDMA / GSM in it so that it will work on all networks. CDMA /GSM phones already exist, this is how RIM is able to sell a "world phone" on Verizon.

Oct 19, 09 - 12:33 pm Comment from: BlackWolf

"It would make good fiscal sense for Apple (and Verizon) to release the first CDMA iPhone right here in the United States running on Verizon’s new 4G network...."

Umm yeah, release the antiquated CDMA phone in the US 1st . . . that's because it's one of the very few countrys that still has a viable working CDMA network, cause Verizon hasn't gotten around to upgrading it to GSM like the rest of the world.(I belive there is a decent amount of CDMA in China as well.)

I see it coming to T-Mobil before Verizon.

Oct 19, 09 - 12:38 pm Comment from: MacTony

If the iPhone doesn't come to Verizon, it will be due to there not being a deal between Apple and Verizon. When Verizon does start the 4G network, it will only be in select markets. Devices on their network will have to fall back to the CDMA network when 4G isn't available. Unless Apple allows Verizon to cripple the iPhone, I will be in the line for the first iPhones.

Oct 19, 09 - 12:47 pm Comment from: x

Verizon is the new Microsoft. Fsuckups.

Apple will never do a deal with those asswipes

Oct 19, 09 - 01:02 pm Comment from: jtc

@itpromike

I didn't know you couldn't use voice and data at the same time with verizon.. I do know that if I get a call I cannot text someone while on the line or it hangs up... but my friend on verizon can talk to me and text others while still on the line.. so as far as I know... you can use both at the same time with verizon.. maybe with at&t;too but not with the iphone.

Oct 19, 09 - 01:02 pm Comment from: XJMPasadena CA.

@ x. U r right I don't believe apple would restrict it's phone jus to be on verizons network... Besides that vzw is bashing iPhone in two comercials!!!

Oct 19, 09 - 01:05 pm Comment from: Marky Mark

What a bonehead. CDMA has *N*O*T*H*I*N*G* to do with LTE! Apple with certainly make a LTE iPhone eventually, but they'll never make a CDMA phone, seeing as how they are not into dead-end technologies.

Oct 19, 09 - 01:14 pm Comment from: tina gina

u kno wat if verizon does come out with da iphone i will be laughing at all of u people that are saying its never gunna happen..that its not possible..

im not saying i love verizon in fact i have sprint.
but if it does happen i will come back to dis site and laugh at all of u.
hey anything is possible on dis world...

Oct 19, 09 - 01:27 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

"Why would Apple make a phone for the Christian Medical & Dental Association?"

@tflint... They're PRAYING for universal health care?

Oct 19, 09 - 01:43 pm Comment from: Big Als MBP

The iPhone 3G and 3GS works on Canada's 4G network owned by CDMA using telcos.

Oct 19, 09 - 01:47 pm Comment from: @tina gina

Yeah it'll happen when we get Verizon out on the podium stating that they were wrong about the iPhone, and that it was stupid of them to pass it up or even doubt its capability or true potential.

Lets not forget Apple is not afraid to use the lesser of the signals. They went with Edge before 3G for a whole year, They aren't exactly known to jump on the first signs of a new technology, unless they've had their hands in the mix, and LTE is fully set on it's standards.

But hey your right Anything is possible as you put "on dis world..." Thank you for making America less educated.

Oct 19, 09 - 02:04 pm Comment from: NCIceman

Choice. Customers like choice.

Oct 19, 09 - 02:16 pm Comment from: ken1w

If Apple wants a second carrier to which it can dictate terms and get happy compliance, it should be Sprint.

Oct 19, 09 - 02:36 pm Comment from: Correct Term

LTE is not 4G. LTE is a technology to lengthen the useful life span of 3G without replacing the whole infrastructure with 4G technology. It is rather proper to call it 3.5G or 3.9G, but definitely not 4G.

Oct 19, 09 - 02:55 pm Comment from: dave

Perhaps, what he actually meant is a dual-mode LTE/CDMA phone. Yes, they are different tech...but because of this Verizon will need a dual-mode phone to take advantage of its entire infrastructure.

Regardless, I highly doubt there's any credibility in this guy. He wrote the article in such a manner that I seriously question whether he actually know what he's talking about. Not to mention, his article is littered with incorrect info.

Oct 19, 09 - 03:02 pm Comment from: dave

@Correct Term

Yea you're absolutely right but everyone is marketing LTE as a 4G technology even though it's a technically not a 4G tech. In the end, LTE will be sold as 4G phone...after all, it sounds better than a 3.9G phone.

This is beyond yours and my control, the marketing people decided on this. To be honest, the common consumer will not care about the 'slight' distinction.

Oct 19, 09 - 06:14 pm Comment from: HeyHowYou

The Verizon commercials seem to be making fun of ATT's network, nothing to do with iPhone. Anyway, I have been on both Verizon, and now ATT - we had much better reception with Verizon, but save money with ATT.

Oct 19, 09 - 09:47 pm Comment from: van vaals

The only negative I've found with my iPhone is its functionality as a phone. ATT has horrifically crappy coverage, especially in San Francisco. And it craps out in you when you ned it the most!! I can't wait for VeriPhone. The lines at Verizon will be longer than ATT ever dreamed.

Oct 19, 09 - 10:35 pm Comment from: i call BS

with the droid ads, no way were they testing anything for Verizon

but I also call BS that Verizon will NEVER get the iphone. I do not believe they will get a CDMA phone, double one just for them.

however, if Apple makes a phone that supports LTE, and they most likely will, they aren't likely to put out a proviso that it can never be used on Verizon. with all the flack they get over ATT, they will most likely unlock the phone when the contract is over, not simply change devils. so at that point and with that tech, Verizon could support the phone if they choose to.

and after the Droid (which has and does a lot of stuff that few really care about one way or another) fails, they might be happy to have the iDon't

Oct 19, 09 - 11:35 pm Comment from: twilightmoon

Marky Mark

if Apple wants to sell the iPhone on the Verizon network in the next 5 years it will need to have support for CDMA. The LTE network will still exist and be necessary in many portions of that network for at least that long. The 3GS still works on Att edge for example.

Network upgrades have to support legacy tech for all the customers with older handsets and it takes time to do costly network upgrades.
