Rush Limbaugh thanks Apple for fixing his Mac issues
Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - 05:25 PM EST

It looks like Apple has fixed Rush Limbaugh's Mac issues and he talked about it on the most listened to radio talk show in America; heard on over 600 stations in the U.S.

Selected excerpts from the transcript of today's edition of The Rush Limbaugh Show:

Last time I was in New York or maybe two times ago, I asked on air, an open-air plea to Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, Inc., to help out with a couple problems I was having with the new operating system: OS 10.5 Leopard. Let me review the problems because it was funny. You know, every time I talk about Apple... I read a lot of Apple Web blogs just to keep up with the latest what's happening with Macs and iPhones and so forth. Any time I talk about Apple it's just guaranteed that some of these blogs are going to blow gaskets like everybody else does. They're mad that I use a Mac, thinking I don't know what I'm talking about when I discuss Mac issues and so forth. It's funny to read. As I mentioned there were two things that would really be helpful. Actually, just only one. The other one was more of a fun thing I wish the computer would do that it was supposed to do. Both have been resolved through the diligent work of an engineer that Apple assigned my IT guy, and the primary problem was with their Time Machine program.

MacDailyNews Note: Limbaugh mentions that he has four brand-new Mac Pros, each with 32 gigs of RAM with two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) processors, and describes what his Mac issues were (Time Machine could not restore mailboxes and Back to My Mac could only connect using direct IP sharing) and what Apple did to fix them. And, for the record, we are not mad that Rush Limbaugh is a Mac user (although based on past Limbaugh-related articles, some of our readers certainly do seem to have an issue with Rush's choice of platforms), nor do we think that he doesn't know what he's talking about when he discusses Mac issues.

Selected excerpts (continued):
An Apple engineer was assigned to us, and the fix took place last night. I did two weeks of trying it, creating logs for the Apple engineers to look at, and they found the problem... So I just wanted to take a moment to thank people at Apple. I'm not going to mention the name of the engineer. I would love to, but if I did, this guy would be taking heat for the rest of his career from people for helping me. But they were very cooperative, and I think it's going to end up having to be a system-wide fix, which is good, because it's been discovered... What? (interruption) Mmm-hmm. Algore is not going to fire anybody. Algore is probably going to say, "Wow, I can use mail now with Time Machine?" He'll probably go home and try it and see if it works. I don't even know... Somebody said, "Make 'em name the patch after you." There will be a patch. I don't think they'll say anything about it other than in the release notes of the next security update or system update. But, anyway, I wanted to fill you in on the details of this, because it was very nice [of] them and they were extremely dilligent. It took a lot of time to find out what the glitch was.

Hit-bait. Queue the vitriole...

Mar 11, 08 - 04:30 pm Comment from: Winston

Now if Apple could only fix his other issues...

Mar 11, 08 - 04:34 pm Comment from: Tiger Leopard

Now thats what I call customer service!

Mar 11, 08 - 04:36 pm Comment from: grok

"...four brand-new Mac Pros, each with 32 gigs of RAM with two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) processors..."

It seems that my sin is envy...

Mar 11, 08 - 04:37 pm Comment from: Steve

i'd say that's pretty nice of him to report the fix with as much detail as he did his problem. i didn't expect that!

Mar 11, 08 - 04:37 pm Comment from: bond co. stooge

MDN, that picture almost made me punch my (glossy) screen on my precious MBP.

Damn you!

Mar 11, 08 - 04:43 pm Comment from: gow

Good for Apple, plus apparently good for Rush, maybe the rest of us can get that fix as well as it drives me nuts also.

Mar 11, 08 - 04:53 pm Comment from: rush

rush is right

Mar 11, 08 - 04:55 pm Comment from: bizlaw

Whether you like Rush or not, this is only good PR for Apple. A user was having a problem, and Apple worked diligently to fix it. Much more than can be said about Microsoft and Windows problems.

So how about we try to leave the personal comments out (either like/dislike) and keep this Mac-related, eh? Is that even possible with this forum?

Mar 11, 08 - 04:59 pm Comment from: Ampar

"...four brand-new Mac Pros, each with 32 gigs of RAM with two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) processors..."

He needed the horsepower. His clone army is nearly complete. And his Saturday morning cartoon.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:03 pm Comment from: ron

Rush is the most Right-on broadcaster there is. You wack-job libs should listen for a few weeks. You might change your minds about him. He's entertaining also. I'd vote for him over Shrillary or Barak Hussein Obama. We need a benevolent dictator in the USA.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:03 pm Comment from: Jake

Good show!!
(Both Apple and Rush.)

Mar 11, 08 - 05:04 pm Comment from: Beryllium

@bizlaw

I agree completely. Leave out the politics.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:06 pm Comment from: anaknipedro

Rush is arrogant. But usually correct.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:07 pm Comment from: loganson

Send in the clones! At least they won't be spouting off the same silly liberal talking points that the media love so much.

<<ducks and runs>>

Mar 11, 08 - 05:08 pm Comment from: TowerTone

"You can have a third-party application to set the interval to different times if you don't want to have it done every hour and fill up the backup drive."

Anyone have this?

Mar 11, 08 - 05:09 pm Comment from: NeonRed

@bondco.stooge
Such visceral response is from the same source that keeps windows users enslaved.
Blind hatred is almost never a good cradle for personal philosophic advancement!
just my two cents?

Mar 11, 08 - 05:12 pm Comment from: Scot Murphy

Thank you, "ron," for exposing the dirty little secret behind modern conservatism: secretly, it despises democracy and wants a fascistic state with dissenters marginalized (at best).

Where have all the respectable conservatives, the Barry Goldwaters, gone?

Mar 11, 08 - 05:19 pm Comment from: TowerTone

I used to be a pretty big fan of Rush's, then I lost some weight,
but I still listen enough to catch tidbits like this today.

And his quoting of Charlie Sheen that "he doesn't pay women for sex, he pays for them to leave afterwards".

And if you wonder why he post pictures like the one above,
it's called "self-defecating humor", or something.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:20 pm Comment from: flappo

i bet he gets more reaction than us poor plebs , ths supposed mac faithful

etc

it's not what ya know

it's WHO ya know

nuff said

Mar 11, 08 - 05:20 pm Comment from: killBill

Rush should copyright "Thickovation" as an apt expression of him and his audience's stupidity.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:27 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ flappo
"nuff said"

You said enough quite a long time ago.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:28 pm Comment from: Big Al

If you ever start making some decent money you will slowly become more conservative in your outlook.

It's easy to be liberal when you aren't signing the cheques.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:31 pm Comment from: Gavron

Tiger Leopard,

nice one!

Mar 11, 08 - 05:32 pm Comment from: Gavron

Winston,

fantastic post!

Mar 11, 08 - 05:34 pm Comment from: Joe

I just want to know the command that the engineer told him to type in Terminal.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:38 pm Comment from: Greg L

@ bond co. stooge

Yeah, I agree with MDN and you. As a Mac user with such a high profile listenership, Rush helps to dispel the perception that only lispy liberals from the art departments use Macs in enterprise environments. Heck, Mr. Conservative has a bunch of Macs with belt-driven blowers on ’em.

It’s ironic that one of the most ecologically minded people in the world, Al Gore, has a Mac setup similar to Rush’s. I think Al has something like three 30-inch Cinema displays. It looks like he’d getting a tan and going sterile sitting in front of those things.

Rush’s politics shouldn’t sour us on his Mac use and should be beside the point.

Still, I agree with you. That photo looks like Rush got a patent on arrogance. He knows that too; it’s part of his schtick.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:38 pm Comment from: jaybrad

What would Rush need with 32 gigs of ram per machine.
That memory is very expensive and if he bought it through Apple it would cost a whopping $36,400 for four machines, and that's just for memory!

I'm sure it's a business tax write-off because he makes millions a year.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:42 pm Comment from: MikeK

@ron -

Ron, you sound like a political version of ZuneTang. Are we supposed to take you seriously? With such clever riposts as "wack-job libs"?

You're entitled to your beliefs. But when you sound like a petulant kid, it makes it hard to take anything you take seriously.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:49 pm Comment from: Jubei

Thats some serious horse power there. What's he doing with all that power? Creating a real Time Machine? wink

Mar 11, 08 - 05:52 pm Comment from: JD

You're right MDN, this is definitely very good publicity for Apple and the Mac, regardless of what the myopic libtards on here think.

Mar 11, 08 - 05:54 pm Comment from: Ampar

You can write to him for his autograph but be forewarned. He'll send you a GLOSSY photograph.

Mar 11, 08 - 06:00 pm Comment from: Raymond from DC

In summary, Rush is telling people, "I love Macs, but I had a serious problem and wanted them to fix it... Apple assigned a top guy and, after a lot of effort, everything is working... I love Macs." And everyone is happy.

We're dealing with very complex software structure here, involving tens of millions of lines of code. Some issues aren't obvious until you confront them. Then, they're often a bitch to resolve.

I'd setup an Xserve/Xraid with 1 TB of data, to be NFS-shared to Sun servers. It worked so well, we added another 2 TB to the array, which they wanted shared as a single resource. Oops! I worked with one of Apple's engineers, generated the requisite logs, and they found the problem. I had to wait for the next 10.4 patch, but it did resolve the problem.

Mar 11, 08 - 06:01 pm Comment from: maclovin

@ ron: you mean "Hitlery"? lol

Mar 11, 08 - 06:03 pm Comment from: Preston

"Thank you, "ron," for exposing the dirty little secret behind modern conservatism: secretly, it despises democracy and wants a fascistic state with dissenters marginalized (at best)."

Isn't it liberalism that wants the gigantic nanny state controlling everything and using the government to tell everyone how to live?

Mar 11, 08 - 06:08 pm Comment from: poo

@ron

You are not a good shill for the Republicans with that shitty attitude... I can only assume you are being sarcastic and actually think the opposite.

Mar 11, 08 - 06:10 pm Comment from: poo

@ron

perhaps Ron Tang might be a better handle?

Mar 11, 08 - 06:12 pm Comment from: BiZarRo BaLlmEr

Hey Rush, tell Apple to make airport extreme work with external HD's

Mar 11, 08 - 06:14 pm Comment from: Darkness

@grok...

What's in the box?

It's been Limbaugh's game all along. Limbaugh has the upper hand...

I personally am not a Rush fan, but he clearly knows his Macs. He even knows that he'll likely be credited in the release notes for finding and reporting the bug. Not something a casual Mac fan would know.

Mar 11, 08 - 06:40 pm Comment from: Ann Coulter's penis

See, Rush can be quite a gentleman.

Mar 11, 08 - 06:45 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Preston

No, they BOTH want that, they just sell it to you in two different ways so you don't realize it. One is like your dad, installing a barbed-wire fence so Hooligans™ won't steal your shit. One is like your mom, who'd rather invite the Hooligans™ in for pie so they learn to play nice. Both of these approaches are naive and oversimplified, but Rush and others in the Political Attack Dog business have proven that Americans love nothing more than naive, oversimplified answers to their problems.

Let freedom ring!

Mar 11, 08 - 06:55 pm Comment from: I'm Proud

You Guys!!!

It can be done! An article on Rush that DOESN'T end in sniping flame wars.
At least, so far...

Mar 11, 08 - 07:24 pm Comment from: Winston

TowerTone, that line about men paying hookers to leave after sex is an old Woody Allen joke.

Mar 11, 08 - 07:45 pm Comment from: Reclaimer

There are plenty of good Mac techs in NYC that could have fixed his Mac problems.

All he or any one of his staff had to do is look in the Yellow Book or yellowbook.com. instead of pitching a fit on the air.

Here is the 3rd party program Rush is talking about!

Mar 11, 08 - 08:11 pm Comment from: DH

Rush is a class act. He's been a Mac user since day #1. He's bragged about Macs long before he had a problem with Leopard. He did the correct thing by asking for help, giving Apple the chance to fix the problems, and then giving them credit and thanks to Apple for fixing the problem. That's good customer service given to a good customer.

Mar 11, 08 - 08:24 pm Comment from: Steve

I partied with a carpenter that did some work on Rush's house. He said he was a great guy. Easy to work with.

You liberal haters would be the "assholes" all us trades guys dislike because you are pricks.

Seems Rush is one of the "good guys" to work for!

Face it Rush is a cool guy, even though he is wrong 20% of the time.

Mar 11, 08 - 08:46 pm Comment from: TowerTone

thanks, Winston. I didn't figure it to be Charlie's, but that makes it even funnier.

Mar 11, 08 - 09:01 pm Comment from: ron

@Steve, Face it Rush is a cool guy, even though he is wrong 20% of the time.

And that 20% is more right than the lefties.

Mar 11, 08 - 09:07 pm Comment from: Joe Mac

Pretty cool of Rush to actually take the time to work with Apple on fixing the problem. Great of Apple to spend the time listening to a customer - whether it is Rush or anyone else.

It sounds like it took a lot of time on everyone's part and they got the issue resolved. Nothing but good press from it!
