Salon: Apple’s new iMac ‘the best home machine you can buy’
Wednesday, August 08, 2007 - 11:09 AM EST

Apple CEO Steve Jobs' biggest news yesterday "concerned a redesign of the iMac, the company's all-in-one desktop computer system -- now the machine will be clad in aluminum rather than iPod-white plastic. Its screen is also made of scratch-resistant glass that Apple has coated for an extra glossy shine," Farhad Manjoo reports for Salon.

"The effect is beautiful; when you get up close to it the system looks something like a grown-up iPhone, more sophisticated and elegant than the previous design," Manjoo reports.

"While sharpening the design, the company has also lowered its iMac prices. Apple's previous iMac lineup comprised a 17-inch screen version for $1,199, a 20-inch model for $1,499, and a 24-inch system for $1,999. Now Apple will offer only two screen sizes, 20 and 24 inches. Twelve hundred dollars now gets you a 20-inch model rather than the old 17-inch version. There's another, more powerful 20-inch version for $1499. The old top-of-the-line 24-inch model is now $1,799, $200 cheaper than yesterday's 24-inch. And Apple now has one more iMac flavor -- a 2.8 GHz high-performance 24-inch system for $2,299... Honestly, the iMac looks, now, like the best home machine you can buy. There's nothing else so pretty and so functional for the price," Manjoo reports.

"Apple's goal, said Jobs, is to make the best PCs in the world. The company could make cheaper machines that did less and didn't look as good. 'But there is some stuff in our industry that we wouldn't be proud to ship,' he said. 'We can't ship junk.' For less money, you could buy junk; but for not very much more, you can, now, buy a stellar machine," Manjoo reports.

Too right.

Those Apple tail lights just keep going further into the distance...

Aug 08, 07 - 10:19 am Comment from: Ray Shine

I thought the old 17" was priced from $999

Aug 08, 07 - 10:25 am Comment from: GOD

Steve don't make no junk.

MDNMW: serious

Aug 08, 07 - 10:28 am Comment from: Jim - TIV

$899 with the educational discount... it was a GREAT buy.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:30 am Comment from: Macromancer

Seriously, PC drones don't get it. Apple could match the crapware that Dell advertises for $400 but it wouldn't be the Apple experience.

I for one am glad they take this approach.

Besides, I dare anyone to go to Dell.com and actually walk away with the PC at the price they advertise.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:30 am Comment from: re: glossy

I think enough people will be complaining about the lack of an option for a matte screen that Apple will begin offering a choice.

The Apple discussions forum are already deleting posts about people complaining about glossy.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:33 am Comment from: drew_ill

What's this guy's name...man-goo? Yecch.

He's not off on his assesment, though. New iMac is gorgeous, and of course, is a Mac, which already makes it the best choice.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:35 am Comment from: drew_ill

@ Jim - TIV

That educational discount now only gets you $50.00 off the lowest model iMac. Dissapointing.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:39 am Comment from: RC

"I thought the old 17" was priced from $999"

Yeah, but old entry level 17" had only 512MB RAM, a combo drive, integrated graphics, no bluetooth, and no remote control.

The new entry level iMac that is $1,199 has a 20" screen, 1GB RAM, a SuperDrive, a real graphics card, plus Bluetooth and the remote included. So it's easily worth the extra $200 and then some....

Aug 08, 07 - 10:41 am Comment from: macaholic

Also the base 17 incher at the 999 price point had GMA graphics system. Basically a Mac mini with a screen.
I doubt they sold very many!

Aug 08, 07 - 10:42 am Comment from: hotinplaya

I want to see one in person, I wondered about the glossy screen, but read where the glass overlay has a special coating?? as any one seen one yet??

Aug 08, 07 - 10:44 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

Ordered a 20" last night for my dad who has been itching to update his Rev.C CRT iMac. I'll let you know how it compares to the previous model when it comes.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:46 am Comment from: lower the mac mini price

The mac mini would be a great way to get people started into using OS X. Sadly, it's quite pricey. Not everyone has $1199 for a computer.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:48 am Comment from: Chris ][

I love the new machines, don't get me wrong, but it's really a shame about the video card choices. The 2600 Pro (which is the cheaper of the 2600's, the XT being better) gets spanked by the similarly-priced offerings from nVidea. You can say all you want about "no one needs a better video card, don't play games, blah blah", but that's ignoring the fact that many people WANT to play newer games at higher framerates and levels of detail. There should be an option for a higher-end graphics card for the iMac. Not a cutting edge one, but something more appropriate for more current games. And don't say "buy a Mac Pro"... first of all, that's overkill ($$$) for gaming, and secondly, even the cards offered for that are mediocre. I understand that Apple may not want the gamer market, but it would sure help sell a lot more machines, and you'd think they would care about that. Right now, this is a big issue with the Apple lineup. Now, let the game-hater comments commence!

Show us where the Mac mini is 199 plz.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:51 am Comment from: Randy

Why label it a home machine? Unless you need the power of a Mac Pro, isn't it also the best office machine? The best school machine? The best library machine? The best research laboratory machine? The best machine for a CEO? The best machine for the CEO's administrative staff? The best machine for a hotel business center? (I have yet to see Macs in a hotel business center - anyone have any different experiences?)

Aug 08, 07 - 10:55 am Comment from: Reclaimer

Yes Macromancer, how true. But I have known so many people that are hooked on those low quality $400 machines.

Sure…they like the iMac's looks, performance and whatnot, but they seem to view their Dells and Gateways as disposable.

Some still swear by some box of something somebody built in a spare bedroom or basement as lone as it's cheap and runs Windows.

Hell, I have even had people ask me if Macs were so good why can't they go to Wal-Mart and buy one!

Unfortunately, some people will never get it.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:57 am Comment from: ByeTakeCare

There's simply no comparison when it comes to Macs vs PCs.This is what I would say about PC's and Windows.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:57 am Comment from: Chris ][

The ATI 2600 Pro is currently about a $90 video card. It's probably the perfect card for the iMac as stock. It's considered low-end for gaming right now. They shouldn't go top-of-the-line, but abouut half-way between the 2600Pro and current state-of-the-art as a BTO option. About a $225-$250 card would be perfect.

Aug 08, 07 - 10:58 am Comment from: shen

read the comments on TFA.

"the new imovie scanning is something every video editing app does!"

clearly they have not actually seen it......

Aug 08, 07 - 11:00 am Comment from: JD

The thing that the PC-only guys don't get is that not only are Macs simply superior to Windows machines, Macs are also some of the best Windows machines made. The only place Macs really suffer in comparison is in the selection of video cards and that's only a huge issue if you're trying to play games.

And that's why they make Wiis and Playstations and X-Boxes.

"Hell, I have even had people ask me if Macs were so good why can't they go to Wal-Mart and buy one!"

i think that answers itself......

Glass screen, just like the iPhone. Sounds like multi-touch features are coming to the iMac once Leopard is released.

1199 i mean

Aug 08, 07 - 11:05 am Comment from: Macromancer

"Sure…they like the iMac's looks, performance and whatnot, but they seem to view their Dells and Gateways as disposable."

Agreed. My uncle switched to PCs a few years ago because he didnt have the money for a Mac. He argued that he didn't need a Mac even though he liked it. After years of aggravation and system errors, he is buying yet another PC, which happens to be his fourth. In that time he could have bought just one Mac, but he wouldn't listen.

Aug 08, 07 - 11:10 am Comment from: Chris ][

@JD: "And that's why they make Wiis and Playstations and X-Boxe".

Not a good reason to not have better choice of video cards. There are many games for computers that are more complex than those for consoles. Console games do not always equal computer games.

I will probably buy an iMac (or more likely a Mac Pro) in the nextt few months, but if I decide to go for the iMac that I'd rather buy, I won't have the video card I want. (And the Pro will only be able to have a good video card in Windows, unfortunately). Ah well, overall it's still better than the best alternative from PC companies. That's the bright side I suppose.

There is an old saying.
'There are none so blind, as those who will not see!"

MW-simple. how cool is that!

Aug 08, 07 - 11:12 am Comment from: shen

@Macromancer

yeah, but the trouble is that once you have software that works you want even more, and then the next thing you know you have $5000 in things like photoshop and you actually have spent more money. wink

Aug 08, 07 - 11:28 am Comment from: Woody

My sis is ordering her 20" new iMac today. Woot! Can't wait to play with it and compare it to my 17" iMac Core Duo that I paid $1,499 for.

(Must not cry... this is how the computer industry works, Woody.)

Aug 08, 07 - 11:28 am Comment from: JD

@ Chris ][ -- I agree with you, the selection of video cards is pretty weak. There are plenty of legitimate reasons for Macs to have higher-end cards apart from gaming. It's definitely a weakness that I'd love to see Apple address. I'm not sure what the down side to a bigger BTO selection is for Apple.

Aug 08, 07 - 11:32 am Comment from: Chris ][

@JD:

Exactly... my wife does 3D animation, and while I'd love to just buy a Mac Pro and be done with it, it's pushing the budget a little bit. If I could get an iMac, but with an upgraded card, it would be the perfect compromise... good for games for me, and better for 3D for her. We'll end up getting a Pro, I'm sure, just will have to save a bit longer. Win for Apple I guess.

Aug 08, 07 - 11:35 am Comment from: skyfire

@ Chris ][

I agree Apple should have given the choice of video cards, but please be serious, PC gaming doesn't even come close to Console gaming. And that BS about complexity is as outdated and false as a windows drone saying OSX is an inferior OS.

Aug 08, 07 - 11:46 am Comment from: Chris ][

@Skyfire:

Oh really? I didn't say "close", I said "different". Granted, some games are very much the same, but computer games often take advantage of the keyboard and mouse, whereas many people (myself included) don't enjoy using a console controller for everything. Can't stand it, in fact.

But thanks for your commentary anyway..

Aug 08, 07 - 11:56 am Comment from: Walter Chillum

Our semester started in July. I'll have to wait until the end of the year for mine. Damn!

Aug 08, 07 - 12:00 pm Comment from: M@c

I agree with this review. Take a great design, and make is better. No, Apple did not reinvent the personal computer this time, they just made an already great machine...greater.

And they kept the Mini, made it faster, and put some aluminum on it. Again...taking a great idea and improving on it.

The keyboard is slick too. Can't wait to try it out!

And by the way, they lowered the entry price points. It's like a quintuple whammy.

Because you go to Wal-Mart to buy cheap, not to buy good.

Aug 08, 07 - 03:17 pm Comment from: raskol AKA me

Man, all you Apple fanboys...

I'm an Apple fan and a shareholder and I'm getting seriously worried about the direction Apple is going. They refuse to address the gaping hole in the product line up and insist that there is no reason to market a computer at the enthusiast market. The Mac Pro is a $1500 product priced at $2500. All the other products non-upgradeability are deal killers for any power user. The iPhones battery turns many people off the phone. I have to send my phone to Apple to have the battery replaced? Ridiculous.

The iMac update is a weak one at best.

Don't get me wrong I love the OS. But I'm sorry. I can't spend $3,000 on a computer every 2 years. And all you retarded Apple fanboys should get a clue before calling anybody who disagrees with Mr. Jobs a troll.

Aug 08, 07 - 04:13 pm Comment from: SlapTooth

@raskol

You know, for YEARS, people have complained about the "gaping hole in the product line" and for YEARS, Apple has been selling all their machines and making a profit.

Stop whining and switch back to Dell already.

MW - away, as in: Hey Raskol, go away/

The really stupid design decision was to exclude the numeric keypad from the wireless keyboard. That's going to be <b>so/b> convenient when using the new Numbers spreadsheet application.

"And all you retarded Apple fanboys should get a clue before calling anybody who disagrees with Mr. Jobs a troll."

Actually, I personally tend to think of people who throw out random blanket insults as being trolls.

LMAO. Thanks shen. That was great. grin

Hey, they are coming out with $250 pc/ linux laptops. They will do word Proc, spreadsheets, etc. All the work things you need for a super low price. If you are going to college and have to watch every penny, I say go for it. Then get a real machine when you get out. grin

But really, for the home and family, the extra price is really worth it cause the machine will not be useless in 2 years, will still be cranking alone (have a iMac Bundy blue that still works great) so consider what you are buying. You trash your PC every year or so and get a new one, you buy a Mac to last 3-5 years for both software and hardware. grin

Just a thought. grin
