Samsung gets $240M contract from Apple for 3 million more iPad displays; brings total to 13 million

Apple Online Store“Samsung Electronics has received a large order for displays that will be used in Apple Inc.’s tablet-style iPad, industry sources said Thursday,” Kim Yoo-chul reports for The Korea Times. “The iPad has a 9.7-inch color LCD screen.”

“‘Samsung Electronics has won a contract worth $240 million from Apple to supply 3 million LCD panels used in the iPads,’ a high-ranking industry representative told The Korea Times, asking not to be identified,” Yoo-chul reports. “‘The most expensive component in the iPad is the display and touch-screen interface that costs $80 for all models. The 9.7-inch display is more than twice the size of the iPhone 3GS screen and costs five times as much,’ he said.”

“According to executives from Samsung Electronics and LG Display, the iPad touch-screen is mainly made by LG Display and Chimei Innolux Corp., which was created from the merger of Taiwan-based LCD makers Chi Mei Optoelectronics, Innolux Display and TPO displays,” Yoo-chul reports.

“Separately, Samsung Mobile Display ― a flat-screen joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI ― has been in deep talks to supply its LCD panels for Apple’s upcoming 4G iPhones and iPads, a company executive told the newspaper,” ,” Yoo-chul reports. “‘As far as I know, Apple will use the LCD panels for its next iPhone models. We are receiving related orders from Apple,’ the executive said, without elaborating further.”

Yoo-chul reports, “The LCD orders came a few months after Samsung’s biggest cross-town rival, LG Display, struck an $800 million deal with the U.S. company to supply 10 million LCD panels for the iPads.”

MacDailyNews Take: With that bright light shining, we’ll simply stand back and watch the analysts scatter back to their hiding places where the smarter ones will revise their iPad forecasts dramatically upwards.

  1. Hmmmm…. Now why would Apple place 13,000,000+ 9.7″ touch screens on order? Todays BMO Capital analysts says 2,700,000 iPads will sell in 2010. Even an analyst isn’t that stupid – makes it pretty clear that the analysts are pure WS BS manipulating the share prices.

I say it again – any stock held for less than 30 days should have all profits taxed at 50%, and any losses should not be able to be written off. That would solve about 90% of the problems on WS.

  2. No one seems to be recognizing what this means for the competitors of Apple:

Dell = \/ down, Down, DOWN, DUMP
HP laptop models = down, Down, DOWN
    Toshiba……
    Sony Vaio……
    Fujitsu……
    Microsoft……

Why? People do not need complex, heavy, mechanically complex, low battery life devices to do the ordinary day to day tasks that most people do at home and work daily.

    The tsunami is coming.

Microsoft?……So what will happen there at M$? Their OS is not well suited to get to a tablet form, nor is MSOffice, and neither of those 2 items are as inexpensive (or as good) as Apple’s offerings. MS has now warned everyone that they may enter the hardware markets and the likes of HP & Dell have to be scrambling to put a decent easy Linux package in play before they croak. The only question is when investors will suddenly drop support in the stock market for M$ & others.

It doesn’t take genius to understand this. All it takes is trying to support the PCs in a family or business office to be jumping for joy at no more BSDs and DLL conflicts/missing items/corruption.

    Hallelulah!

  3. @ET ahh yes, and any one who buys anything, including all retailers, should have to hold everything they trade for at least 30 days

good grief, have your nanny wipe your noise and let you get back to your play date

  4. R2, not hardly a multi-year purchase! One thing we can be fairly sure of is that it will cost less to manufacture such screens this time next year, and still less a year later.
Sure. Apple has revised its sales expectations upwards. For real? They think so. They have reason to believe so. They could still be wrong. As for the “players” who are hoping for the AAPL market to drop for a day or two … I’ll play along. If they can get it to drop, I can profit on it rising again soon after.
ET, not all of us are “players”, yet you would punish us all?

  5. Switheroo, that was very much NOT a Consumer, or even Prosumer, video. That was full-blown Pro … but who made it? Who was it advertising FOR? The message was solid – go with the media designed to fit on an iPad OR Tablet. So … not an ad for an iPad, not by Apple.
That said, posited, asked, etc. … thanks for pointing it out. There’s every reason to believe that tablets of all sorts will benefit from this hype – but I believe the iPad will “Rule Them All”. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  6. The article says “The 9.7-inch display is more than twice the size of the iPhone 3GS screen and costs five times as much,’ he said.”

I am hoping the iPad is much more than “twice” the size of my iPhone. If it is not at least 4 times the size, I will not get an iPad. I think this statement does not accurately reflect the full screen size of the iPhone vis a vis the iPad.

  7. I wonder how many Bill Gates “Tablets” have been sold over the years since inception, where he tried to get his idea of a PC with all it’s ports, thickness, OS etc. inside a successful tablet?

I know Gates recently talked about how the Tablet needs to have a stylus, ports and keyboard to be a success. Right or wrong the man sticks to his water pistols!
