Skype for Apple iPhone to be released on Tuesday, March 31
Monday, March 30, 2009 - 09:23 AM EDT

"Skype, the Internet telephone unit of eBay Inc., is planning to launch its service for iPhone users on Tuesday," Sinead Carew reports for Reuters.

"Skype has been pushing to make its service work on the most popular advanced phones with an aim to expending its more than 400 million users who were mostly lured by the promise of cheap and sometimes free calls made using its computer application," Carew reports.

"Skype Chief Operating Officer Scott Durchslag said he has high hopes for the application's success on Apple Inc's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) popular iPhone as he expects Skype's most feature-rich mobile offering to appeal to new and existing customers," Carew reports.

"'The No. 1 request we get from customers is to make Skype available on iPhone. There's a pent-up demand,' Durchslag said in an interview before the CTIA annual mobile showcase in Las Vegas, where Skype plans to launch the service on Tuesday," Carew reports.

Rory Cellan-Jones blogs for BBC News, "It works fine - just install the app, tap on the icon and Skype launches with the familiar start-up sound you get on your computer. Your contacts list then tells you who is online - and you can either send them an instant message or make a call. When I tried it, the sound quality was about the same as on any mobile call - and as it was to a Skype contact it was free."

"But here's the catch - I could only make the call because I was on a wi-fi network. Apple's restrictions on the use of its software development kit mean that Voip applications cannot use the 3G network," Cellan-Jones reports. "The other issue is that the iPhone doesn't allow you to have more than one application open at the same time - so your Skype buddies probably won't be able to get you on the phone unless you happen to be in the app when they call."

Cellan-Jones writes, "Skype is obviously very happy to be on the iPhone. But unless Apple takes a radically different approach to integrating the free calls service into its phone, it's unlikley to make a huge impact."

The one-app-at-a-time limitation probably won't apply once iPhone 3.0 OS comes out in a couple of months. The background notifications will probably be sufficient to alert you to an incoming call. That will make skype on iPhone a real value (though it's OK as far as it goes even now).

Skype makes money when you need to call an actual phone number. They charge $99 for unlimited calls and you get your own phone number, too.

What kind of adapter would one need to use a phone headset with an iPod Touch?

Ok, I had to ask...my wife uses Skype on my Macbook to call China to family and friends...it works well, except during heavy traffic holidays, especially the Chinese New Year. We also have a version 1 iPod touch. Is there some kind of a mic rig up that would work for this??

Skype makes money on SkypeOut. Good number of Skype users use it often from their desks. It's cheaper than most mainstream long distance carriers out there; even the US ones.

CD:

You can buy an iPhone headset and use it with the iPod touch. It will work with all iPod/iPhone applications that make use of audio input.

Cool.

I finally got an iPod touch 2G last week. Now all I need is the Etymotic h2F headset/earphones.

The Reuters article says this:

While Skype video is very popular with desktop customers, Durchslag said that the company is still considering whether it will offer video for the iPhone or other phones.

"We're considering video carefully but we have a really high bar on the quality," and how the user interaction will work with other applications on iPhone, he said. "If we do it we will have to do it incredibly well."

Video? Hmmm... And just how is that supposed to happen on an iPhone that doesn't have a video camera? Do you think that maybe Skype knows something about upcoming iPhone hardware that we don't???

Is it just me or does Durchslag sound like Douchebag?

eBay considers Skype a loss-leader. It was supposed to make it easier for buyers and sellers on the Marketplace to communicate, but that never really took off. That's why eBay has been looking for a buyer for the last year: they took a $1.7 billion write-off on it.

If they can't sell it soon, the stockholders may demand they let it go dark. It's closed and proprietary, so that won't be a great loss to the industry as a whole.

@CD

"You can buy an iPhone headset and use it with the iPod touch."

Actually, that's not true. The first-gen Touch headphone jack cannot process incoming signals. The latest Touch does, but not ours.

Jailbreak is your only hope.

But even then, you would have to acquire one of those custom microphones for about fifty bucks.

cool hmm

@Apple Cider

You're probably a pretty good douche, yourself.

Question:
We usually have this beautiful concept of PC2Phone = flat rate voip, while PC2PC = Free, and it's well accepted and expected. So if Skype in every phone become a reality, what's in it for Skype? Calling landlines? It's going obsolete already. So what will happen to those voice monthly plans? People could just pay the minimum minutes plan to keep the connectivity and that's it. The rest of the call will go through VoIP I guess.
