Skype has released Skype for Mac 1.4.0.49 today, which is the first Universal build of Skype. Version 1.4.0.49 also includes support for web presence, which allows you to showcase your online status on the web or in an email signature.
To activate web presence, go to Preferences -> Privacy, and tick the box saying ‘Allow my status to be shown on the web’. More info about web presence here.
Skype has also translated Skype into Traditional Chinese for this version. More languages to follow in upcoming releases.

Actually skype is pretty neat. It annoys me that iChat dosn’t recognize alot of my Windows friends who have cams/mics. And that is where skype comes in.
also, it would be nice if they mentioned it on the site somewhere that it was universal…
What about webcam support for Mac? That’s what we need from Skype.

What we really need is for Apple to come out with a version iChat AV for Windows. It could possibly become a standard. Right now it is limited because 95% of other users are using Windows. I have yet to use iChat AV and my brother lives 12 hours away. We both never use it.
I’m all for Apple releasing a Windows version. They did it with QuickTime and iTunes and more PC users are iTunes customers than Mac users (only because of market share). Still, Apple should consider iChat AV for Windows. How many Mac users out there now use it EXTENSIVELY. Not many that I know of.

That’s because most Mac users don’t have an iSight cam… Of course, that is changing fast as Apple includes iSight cams on all of it’s new Macs..
iChat AV would never work for Windows… One, because it’s Windows. Two, because there would be way to many compatibility problems trying to get every mom and pop web cam on the market to function properly with the software… iSight and iChat work seamlessly together because it is like every thing else Apple does, a complete solution.. Just like Mac and OSX and iPod and iTunes.. Apple delivers a complete end to end user experience without third parties involved.. That’s why Apple products “just work.”
I’m disappointed there is not video chat functionality included in this update. Although iChat is great and works with PCs, AIM for windows is cheesy for video. C’mon, Skype! Give us video chat!

I agree. We need ichat & isight for windows. It is just too difficult to video chat with my pc brethren.
They could even express this in one of their ads.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but does anyone know what the heck is going on with Filemaker creating a UB version? If/when, etc.? Our small business needs to buy a basic database program but we expect to upgrade our Macs to MacIntels over the next year or so and don’t want to be stuck running a database in Rosetta. We were thinking Filemaker, but can’t get ANY information from their sales staff about when, or even if (!), they plan to create a Universal version.
Any info would be welcome!

Easier for Apple would be to make iChat compatible with Skype.

—> This statement is not credible and cannot be backed up by empirical evidence. iTunes and QuickTime seem to have no problems on the Windows platform. I do admit that iChat AV is a complex app. Apple can accomplish this.

—> FALSE. Apple seemed to have no problems with providing Windws drivers for BootCamp. Also, if iChat AV became a standard, web-cam manufacturers would be RUSHING to provide updated drivers and have “Compatible With iChat AV” plastered all over their packaging. Next time you go to a big-box retailer, check the notebook section. Quite a few manufacturers now have built in web-cams a-la iSight. THIS IS NOT AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK.

It’s the “V” in iChat AV that is key to what I am saying.

Huh? iChatAV is no more sophisticated than any other Windows video chat application. Of course it could work.

Microsoft manage it with Messenger. Yahoo! with their messenger. Skype with theirs. AIM with their’s. Why can’t Apple with iChatAV. I think you fail to understand the concept of a device driver.
