SlingPlayer for iPhone facing opposition from AT&T?
Thursday, April 16, 2009 - 03:18 PM EST

"An apparent delay in the approval of SlingPlayer's release on the App Store, coupled with unconfirmed reports that AT&T isn't keen on seeing the device make its way to the iPhone, has led to speculation that the wireless carrier is seeking to have the software rejected in its current form," Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.

"Sling Media announced on March 26th that it had submitted the highly-anticipated application to the App Store for Apple's approval. It's been three weeks since then and the app has yet to gain Apple's approval, suggesting something is holding up its release," Marsal reports.

"Meanwhile, industry watchers are taking advantage of the matter to speculate that AT&T may have ulterior motives for requesting that Apple deny the application, if it indeed has chosen to do so. In particular, it's theorized that the wireless carrier may be close to making good on a promise to launch a similar service that would allow iPhone users to steer video recorders for its U-verse digital TV offering from their handsets," Marsal reports.

The Boy Genius report says, "Sling says that they 'have had no word from Apple.”

Uhhh... What if you can't get U-Verse??? AT&T;only provides it in a very small portion of the nation. That sucks and is not fair, it AT&T;is actually trying to block this.

The sling app is the one reason i want to buy a slingbox.

Perhaps it's simply being rejected until the SlingPlayer app is coded to work only via Wi-Fi? I have a tough time believing Apple wouldn't want this available to their iPod touch users.

More likely:

"BGR is citing an unverified source who claims that Apple plans to deny the application in its current form because AT&T;has expressed concerns about its potential to saturate its 3G network."

We'll see what the real reason is if Sling pulls a Skype and only allows Wifi streaming.

Just shut the fsck up AT&T;and provide the bandwidth at a affordable price.

They are just like Comcast, getting their fingers into places where they don't belong.

It's because this "line owners" have a monopoly on cash generation and don't know what the do next, so they diddle around in other people's business areas, even those of their customers.

Spend your time and money building faster and better infrastructure, leave the rest alone.

The US is falling behind, other nations are already on fiber optics.

I love my sling player on my iMac.

I disagree with Virus Free.

I'm an iPhone developer, and yet I still understand why ATT does not want sling to go over their 3G/EDGE networks.

They should have the app only work on WiFi. Then Apple should approve normally. I would understand the out rage if its a WiFi app that gets denied.

Apr 16, 09 - 03:23 pm Comment from: yup....

I agree with ed there. the iPhone is about 2-4 years ahead in technology than what ANY carrier could handle right now. Having sling and how ever more copy cats over the network will only make matters worst. When it does come out expect it to be WIFI only, and if doesn't come out at all, it's probably sling crying to get their way. AT&T;has every right to test their product on their own network out before allowing any other options, its BUSINESS NOT PERSONAL.

Allowing an app like SlingPlayer to stream video over 3G/Edge is crazy. There's simply not enough bandwidth for something like that. You think there's too many dropped calls now on 3G services? Just wait until you can't even make a call because too many people are streaming "American Idol" over their iPhones. And think of how many times your SlingPlayer will stop or be choppy because of the lower bandwidth, or get dropped due to heavy use of the 3G network.

U.S. mobile phone networks simply aren't built out enough for these services. Maybe in other countries where they don't have the vast geographical space to cover (more towers closer together), but right now the U.S. doesn't have the mobile capacity.

WiFi shouldn't be a problem, but again, you're dealing with using someone's network to stream video. Someone has to pay for that.

Apr 16, 09 - 04:37 pm Comment from: U-Verse user

Considering how well AT&T;has implemented U-verse (still quite buggy), I'd MUCH rather Slingplayer for the iPhone...Also, in regards to the bandwidth issue, I realize that the iPhone has a MUCH larger impact on AT&T;'s 3G network, but Sling has had the app available for Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian, and Blackberry phones for a while now (prior to AT&T;"expanding" their 3G network)...Did AT&T;attempt to block release of that? No...There have even been rumors swirling about AT&T;bringing non-Uverse mobile TV to the iPhone via an API:
So either AT&T;could allow Sling for free or get paid a monthly service fee for using it's mobile service...This sure seems like a case of AT&T;not wanting a competing service on the same platform

Not if AT&T;builds a faster network.

Ok, I admit right now might not be the best time, but if your going to bother to build a new faster network, 3G being so new and all, at least make it fast enough to allow PROGRESS.

This is why AT&T;is having the problems it is, because it didn't THINK AHEAD.

It built a half assed network, underpowered from the very beginning.

You can't go wrong building big and allowing the world to scale up.
