Sony Ericsson phone units plummet 43% in Q209
Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 04:44 PM EDT

Apple Online Store "Sony Ericsson warned of worsening trouble at the company as it recorded a steep drop in the number of phones shipped this quarter as well as in its financial well being," Electronista reports.

"The company shipped just 13.8 million phones this quarter, dropping 43 percent compared to one year earlier; the number was also a 5 percent shrink from already weak performance in the winter," Electronista reports. "Accordingly, the company swung from a roughly $8.5 million profit in spring 2008 to a $300.5 million loss in 2009."

Electronista reports, "Most of the company's recent declines have come through a combination of a virtual absence of smartphones as well as a chronic problem with product overlap that has resulted in multiple similar phones that do little to stand out in the market or from each other."

This is a shame. Sony Ericsson was always the most Mac-like of all phone manufacturers until the iPhone came out. Really nice phones.

Is this part of the bloodbath? It seems like nobody wants anything but an iPhone. Maybe common sense is starting to make a comeback!

The big problem is Sony's CEO and President.

Didn't Nokia come out with a revenue and earnings warning last nite?

Jul 16, 09 - 05:11 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

@John. I agree. Sony Ericsson makes some excellent phones.

I've had an unlocked SE phone for about 3 years and never had a problem with it.

First "spend" became a noun, now it's "shrink"

Here's the Nokia earnings:
http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20090716-712313.html

And, a snippet from the article:
<<Nokia's net profit was EUR380 million for the three months to June 30, down 66% from EUR1.10 billion a year earlier but ahead of analysts' expectations for EUR316 million. Earnings per share came in at EUR0.10 compared with EUR0.29 a year earlier, also slightly ahead of expectations for EUR0.09.

"Competition remains intense, but demand in the overall mobile device market appears to be bottoming out," Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said.

Nokia's market share increased to 38% from 37% in the previous quarter, but its average selling price fell to EUR62 from EUR65.

The reported operating margin in devices and services fell to 11.6% from 17.2% the previous year, ahead of expectations for 10.5%.

Sales fell to EUR9.91 billion from EUR13.15 billion a year earlier, missing expectations for EUR10.11 billion. Operating profit fell to EUR427 million from EUR1.47 billion, against expecations for EUR487 million.>>

Profits down 66%, sales down sharply, margins down, and the average selling price of a Nokia handset is 62 Euros!!!

First the quality goes. Then the quantity goes. Same with Motorola as it is with Sony Ericsson.

Jul 16, 09 - 05:29 pm Comment from: Olmecmystic

Sony, yet again, is WAY behind the curve as it has no smartphones and no OS to produce a smartphone with. Motorola's in the same boat. Their only hope may be Android, but I doubt they have the ability to produce even a passable smartphone due to the software issues.

Jul 16, 09 - 06:08 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

Aww, that's a shame. I have a sony ericsson k800i, and it gets the job done. Some of us don't want or need a smart phone =/

S/E gonna join Motorola in the "killed by iPhone" graveyard.

@ bearman

Haha. Smartphones are for people who need them. I do not need one atm, but I will do when I leave uni. Hope there is a nice Android or blackberry out by then.
