Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 tries to look like Apple’s iPhone for a reason
Tuesday, February 12, 2008 - 06:01 PM EDT

"The Xperia X1 from Sony Ericsson resembles Apple Inc.'s iPhone, and that's not a coincidence. The Xperia X1, introduced at the Mobile World Congress, is Sony Ericsson's entry into the mobile-phone multimedia arena and is based on Windows Mobile. But its initial display looks more like Apple's iPhone than Windows Mobile," Richard Koman reports for NewsFactor.

"Sony Ericsson has launched a shot across Apple's bow with its Experia X1 multimedia cell phone. Announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the X1 features a three-inch VGA touch screen, an arc slider and a full keyboard. It supports the fast 3G networks HSDPA/HSUPA, as well as slower EDGE and GSM networks, and it supports WiFi. The X1 weighs 5.1 oz," Koman reports. "The phone is Sony Ericsson's first Windows Mobile phone and will be available in the second half of the year."

MacDailyNews Take: In other words, Sony Ericsson's fake iPhone will debut after Apple's 3G iPhone. From that perspective, 'tis not much of a "shot across Apple's bow," now is it?

Koman continues, "At first glance, the X1 looks remarkably like the iPhone, with a flashy nine-panel interface that lets users choose the programs and Web pages it displays. Past the initial screen, however, the interface is pure Windows Mobile. That makes the interface both familiar to American users and not as innovative as the iPhone's."

Full article here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "JadisOne" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: As "JadisOne" wrote to us when sending the link, "The iPhone is doing something right, everyone compares their product to it."

Furthermore, the only time the word "pure" should ever be used in describing Windows Mobile is when placed immediately in front of the word "garbage."

Thats why you will never ever see an ad like the ones Apple does for the iPhone and Touch. Instead you get the flashy glitz, the word touch on the ad and more flashy crap. If they showed the real thing, people can see that is just crap with some nice icing on top to fool the public.

Feb 12, 08 - 07:14 pm Comment from: DRM sucks

OMG, a full keyboard. Sorry, not worth making it 40% thicker than the iPhone.

Other features seem nice - GPS, etc.

Industry and analysts seem to think that the virtual keyboard is a problem. I do not think that users share that feeling.

Feb 12, 08 - 07:25 pm Comment from: MikeH

My daughter's GPS still wants to route her over where the 35W bridge was until last August 1. My Touch knows it fell down!

Sent from my Touch with no real keyboard!

Feb 12, 08 - 07:26 pm Comment from: coolfactor

So where's a photo?

No, MDN has to use up that article space with yet another ad. please replace that iPhone ad with a photo of the subject of this article.

Feb 12, 08 - 07:28 pm Comment from: ericdano

Windows Mobile? Yeah. Ok. I know Zune Tang is looking forward to that.

iPhone FTW

Feb 12, 08 - 07:31 pm Comment from: ken1w

Quite a brick. Why do they show the side view? That's not good marketing. Even the half with the keyboard looks thicker than an iPhone. And Windows Mobile? How quaint...

Feb 12, 08 - 07:37 pm Comment from: Goople

love my iPhone, but XPERIA is hot period....downfall could be Windows Mobile...because in my past xperience WM is a crashfest.

if they put Android on that thing I could get interested

Feb 12, 08 - 07:39 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

So... Windows Mobile with an intro screen... Stunning.

Sony, what happened to you?

Feb 12, 08 - 07:40 pm Comment from: Jim

Here's a link to the Xperia X1. That thing's a loser before it even gets off the ground.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/sonyericsson-xperia-x1-qwerty-with-windows-mobile/

Feb 12, 08 - 07:43 pm Comment from: AcuMonkey

Um, sorry but whoever thinks that actually resembles the iPhone should be drug out into the street and shot.

If I had a few of these, I could build a new home. Nice brick guys.

Feb 12, 08 - 07:56 pm Comment from: Reclaimer

Nope…the X1 is an iPhone knockoff.

Jim is right. Who could confuse the two?

Feb 12, 08 - 07:57 pm Comment from: occams razor

That is one fugly brick, nothing like my beaut iPhone. Plus it's infected, yuuuuuuuuk.

Feb 12, 08 - 08:26 pm Comment from: KenC

It'll be here, WHEN?!?

Feb 12, 08 - 08:31 pm Comment from: Peter

Tend to agree--lipstick on a pig.

The opening screen may look pretty, sure. But as soon as you say, "Hey, I want to check out a webpage!" you end up back in ugly Windows Mobile.

Feb 12, 08 - 08:46 pm Comment from: R2

"In other words, Sony Ericsson's fake iPhone will debut after Apple's 3G iPhone."

Nothing else really needs to be said.

Feb 12, 08 - 08:49 pm Comment from: Michael Cheung

Just like the HTC Touch, they try to put on a touchy, slick cover interface on the main screen hoping to lure people away from iPhone... but underneath it all, its just plain vanilla Windows Mobile underneath...
Kinda reminds of what Bertrand was saying about Windows Vista when he went on stage one time.... (cant remember if it was MacWorld or WWDC), that underneath all the gloss, its still the same old Windows.

Feb 12, 08 - 09:04 pm Comment from: Ferf Muckmeyer

Sony. ALL Baloney.

Feb 12, 08 - 09:35 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

I know that mindless morons like "@Tired of Retards" will probably rip me a new one for this, but the Xperia looks like a great phone. It has many of the features that the iPhone is missing.

I for one am happy that the iPhone has raised the bar and forced manufacturers to up their game instead of giving us the crappy little phones we're accustomed to.

Between the Xperia X1 and the Garmin phone, things are looking exciting in the mobile device space. We should thank Apple for that.

The iPhone has one primary advantage over competitors and that's the beautiful user interface. Hopefully Apple will continue to work to bring functionality up to par with form.

Feb 12, 08 - 09:52 pm Comment from: ken1w

> The iPhone has one primary advantage over competitors and that's the beautiful user interface.

One? How about the iPhone having a REAL browser? And visual voicemail? And OS X under the hood? ...

Feb 12, 08 - 09:59 pm Comment from: Spark

Some of the poster under the engadget article say "they'd be happy to pay $800 for it". Seems like it was just 7 months ago that people were ridiculing Apple for having the gall to charge $500 for the iPhone. We'll have to wait another 7 months to see what this Sony phone actually sells for.

Feb 12, 08 - 09:59 pm Comment from: Mac4lfe

That thing is fusking ugly. Are you kidding me. Is that the best they can do. Let's just cram all the feature we can come up with in a phone and give the design department 2 days to figure out what it should look like.

Sorry Sony Ericsson, simple does it.

Feb 12, 08 - 10:04 pm Comment from: Petey

After getting my iPhone on launch day in the UK I can say that in all the time I have used the iPhone not once have I EVER thought "I wish this phone had a keyboard".

That to me sums up how fantastic Apple's OS and touch screen is - and i'm a 40yr old married guy who has owned countless mobile phones in the past.

Just goes to show - you can teach old dogs new tricks.

Thanks Apple for the easiest phone to use I have ever owned!

Feb 12, 08 - 10:06 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

"...
One? How about the iPhone having a REAL browser? And visual voicemail? And OS X under the hood? ..."

Well the browser is nice, slow, but very nice when WiFi is available. Visual Voice Mail, who doesn't have that. You can get it free. I use Callwave over the iPhone visual voice mail because I get e-mail notifications and text translations, and it's freeeeeee. Effectively any phone can have visual voice mail.

Feb 12, 08 - 10:07 pm Comment from: Petey

Just seen a pic of that phone - boy is it an ugly mother!

No need for Apple to worry about that thing - yuck!

Sony's designers have lost the plot and their creativity too.

Time to go back to art college guys and learn the basics of good industrial design!

Feb 12, 08 - 10:07 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

Oh, and as far as OS X, well it's not like we get to use it now is it?

Feb 12, 08 - 10:22 pm Comment from: Hm...

Well, now:
“Past the initial screen, however, the interface is pure Windows Mobile. That makes the interface both familiar to American users and not as innovative as the iPhone's.”

What a masterful understatement! Windows Mobile not as innovative indeed. Tis a bon mot worthy of Peter Sellers! Or Monty Python...

Feb 12, 08 - 10:25 pm Comment from: JD

Sure are a lot of people commenting on it if there's nothing to worry about. If it's a non-story, why is there a story here?

Feb 13, 08 - 12:54 am Comment from: elgruga

thelonius mac - it appears that you are the mindless moron.

'Anyone can have visual voice mail' - yeah? Where is it?

'The browser is nice' NICE? Its the best freakin browser on ANY cell phone ever.
Its the only REAL browser - the rest are shit.
'Its slow' - NO, Mr. Moronic, its NOT - have you seen or used an iPhone?
It was tested as faster than some 3G phones because of its faster processor, when it was using EDGE data, NOT wifi.

What about the 8 gigs of memory?
What about the iPod?
What about the amazing OSX interface?
We dont get to use it? Hows that - is it running on vista or something?

WTF is up with you? The best phone ever and you have the gall to call it down?
You are utterly wrong and out of touch with reality.

Are you an astroturfer for Micro$hit?

Feb 13, 08 - 01:16 am Comment from: ?what?

someone said put android on it...that may be all well and good but android is a really crappy name for a piece of software...it has a negative connotation in my opinion. aside from that this thing is a brick....back to the drawing board losers.

Looks like a zune on steriods, butt ugly and will probably take a dump just like the zune

Feb 13, 08 - 03:09 am Comment from: Huh?

S/E? Ha!

I bought a brand new SonyE cell late Nov2007. It gets about a day and a half of talk time from its battery. I took it to the Fido repair center, to have a look. Two days later they gave me a NEW handset — which gets... about a day and a half of talk time from its battery!

I bought my wife and daughter each a Nokia flip, just before Xmas. Each of these gets about four DAYS talk time from the battery.

The Nokias are clear in a busy restaurant. The SE is useless in an empty bookstore . Jeez!

Oh, but the SE has Bluetooth — which you can use to send yourself DRMed MP3 ringtones. (Google: drm packager) DRM! Why would you need to install DRM onto an MP3? The handset only has 10 MB of RAM. Well, wait. I could get some of Britney's 'songs' on this unit — if I rip to 96kbps!

Feb 13, 08 - 03:29 am Comment from: RonJeremy

now now ppl (and MDN), you still dont get it do you? Just like sex, CRAP SELLS - just look at Windows OS sales figures wink

Feb 13, 08 - 03:46 am Comment from: DJ

So sad, the dearth of originality shown by the corporate suits.

And even sadder that their designer lackeys cannot even pull a knockoff with some semblance of style.

Feb 13, 08 - 04:41 am Comment from: Macaday

1. Well, at least their seems to be a growing consensus that there is no certain competitor to the iPhone. Which is true.

2. Better views of this phone are here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/x1/default.aspx?cc=GB&lc=en

3. It's a mass of metal and plastic - too much. But it looks good and if it weren't for the iPhone it would be state of the art.

4. It demonstrates that the genius of iPhone is its simplicity. One thin slate, packed with innovation - in the software.

5. Sony must be desperately unhappy launching such a product with Windows on it. A travesty really.

6. The IT nuclear bomb of the 21st century is OSX, no doubt.

Feb 13, 08 - 06:32 am Comment from: Let down by Sony Ericsson

Sony admits that their previous touch screen products, until the newest P1i, where a complete failure. They also give up on Symbian, which is frustrating for P1i holders.

I so regret buying that P1i brick. A complete waste of money. Buggy, clumsy, hard to use. Until then I had hoped companies working on these things for several years could deliver. Now its clear that the iPhone is simply uniquely the best. The best now, and the best of whatever comes in the next couple of years.

Because seriously, Sony switching to Windows Mobile will not change anything. Its only a public announce of their defeat. Using a Windows Mobile phone is really insulting for ones intelligence...

Feb 13, 08 - 06:41 am Comment from: GmanMac

@Macaday...Looks Good? It looks horrible. Those diamond shaped control buttons look like something from a VHS recorder I bought in 1989.

Zune meets Psion 5

Feb 13, 08 - 08:21 am Comment from: Ray

Wow! Nice phone! Once Sony figures out how to get that Windoze virus off it, it will compete well against the iPhone.

Just my $0.02

Feb 13, 08 - 09:51 am Comment from: shen

wow, just wow....

i should copy all the names that post thinking this phone looks good and remember to never take their advice on any matter of appearance ever.

in the name of..... oh that is one fugly phone. hell to call it a phone is an insult to even the typical winmobile crap.

*shudder*

but hey it has a whole lot of tiny buttons hidden under the screen! rotflmao!

Feb 13, 08 - 11:01 am Comment from: Larry B.

I heart competition!

Feb 13, 08 - 11:48 am Comment from: Synthmeister

Yes, the fact that Sony feels compelled to try out a new OS tells you something about how "smart" Symbian really is.

Feb 13, 08 - 02:15 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

@elgruga

thelonius mac - it appears that you are the mindless moron.

'Anyone can have visual voice mail' - yeah? Where is it?

Oh ye of infantile capacity, did you not read further? Any cell phone out there can have visual voice mail, you check out callwave.com. It's an outstanding application. Your voice mail is forwarded to callwave. It is delivered via e-mail. You can scroll through them, pick the ones you want to play. It even sends you a text message of the voice mail as it comes in. There are several of these services out there.

"...'The browser is nice' NICE? Its the best freakin browser on ANY cell phone ever.
Its the only REAL browser - the rest are shit.
'Its slow' - NO, Mr. Moronic, its NOT - have you seen or used an iPhone?.."

Silly pathetic fangirl, yes. It is P A I N F U L L Y slow when using Edge and only acceptable when using WiFi. Blackberrys on Edge are typically faster with both e-mail and Web browsing on Edge, which is not saying much because it's still painful. Nonetheless, when using Edge IT IS S L O W. Just about every time I try to use iPhone Safari on Edge, I give up and wait until I can find WiFi.

"What about the 8 gigs of memory?"
"What about the iPod?"

8 gigs or even 16 gigs now! It's memory you can pretty much only use for iPod functions and while having my iphone mushed with an ipod is a great option, I suspect most wanting a smartphone would prefer that the SMARTPHONE aspects be enhanced over iPod aspects.

"What about the amazing OSX interface?
We dont get to use it? Hows that - is it running on vista or something?"

If you're read before you got your panties in a bunch, you'd see that I said the only thing the iPhone has going for it over any other phone is it's user interface. And even though it is running on top of some stripped down version of OS X, we don't get to see or use that OS X. I mean I can't even connect my iPhone to my computer and have free use of that "8 gigs of memory!!!" I can't make an AppleShare connection to my desktop. I can't store files. I can't even create folders. I can't drag an image from an e-mail and store it in a folder. I could write pages on what I can't do with the iPhones variant of OS X.

For all intents and purposes, it might as well be Windows Mobile underneath. Except for some strange reason I can do many of those things with Windows Mobile, but not the iPhone. Gee, with Windows Mobile, I can even cut/copy/paste.

"WTF is up with you? The best phone ever and you have the gall to call it down?
You are utterly wrong and out of touch with reality."

The iPhone may be the best cell phone ever, but it isn't perfect. The only real strength it has is the user interface. The user interface is so far beyond what anyone else has come up with that it overshadows the shortcomings of the phone, of which there are quite a few. It's the 80/20 rule brought to life. 80% of the people out there use 20% of the capabilities of their smartphones. I believe this is due to how difficult they are to work. The iPhone makes those 20% of functions exceeding easy, so the 80% is mindlessly happy with the iPhone. The remaining 20% of us know that the phone comes nowhere near delivering on the potential of an OS X device, and surprisingly doesn't deliver much of the functionality of devices with far less capable operating systems.

"Are you an astroturfer for Micro$hit?"

No, I'm a consultant, working the enterprise sector, for clients including Apple Computer. I've done nothing but Mac enterprise consulting since oh, 1992.

Feb 13, 08 - 04:20 pm Comment from: antmeeks

iPhone killin' Sony XP-diarrhea X1, who cares? We all know this phone will languish in the periphery of obsolescence before it even hits the marketplace (if it ever does). How many other WinMobile iPhone "Killers" have hit in the last several months, only to disappear from general consciousness? A simple Google search will answer that question (a lot). The only purpose they serve is to dilute the market and help build consumer mindshare for the thing they're all trying to copy.. Why would I want a hastily thrown together copy of something I can get for real? Hmmm..

Feb 14, 08 - 09:19 am Comment from: mindpower

MacDailyNews Take: In other words, Sony Ericsson's fake iPhone will debut after Apple's 3G iPhone. From that perspective, 'tis not much of a "shot across Apple's bow," now is it?

And you know this because you have the fixed release date of a 3G iPhone given to you personally from Steve Jobs? C'mon you have no idea!

I notice to that MDN conveniently ignores all the other better features the X1 will have, such as support for microSD memory cards, GPS, 3.2MP camera, video recording, and so on, and so on, and so on.

I completely agree with theloniousMac. Apple may be ahead in some respects in the smart phone arena but this market is a lot harder to stay ahead in than mp3 players. Other companies will catch up very very fast and unless Apple are up to the pace they will be left behind SJ said when they announced the iPhone that Apple was five years ahead of the competition. He overestimated by four years.
