Steve Ballmer egged at Hungarian University (with video)
Monday, May 19, 2008 - 03:18 PM EST

"Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was egged by a protester during a speech he gave at a Hungarian University," Matt Asay reports for CNET.

"As this video shows, the protester rose to his feet to challenge Microsoft for stealing billions in Hungarian taxpayer money, then started hurling eggs at Ballmer, who was forced to take cover behind a desk," Asay reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Ahh, the memories. Hopefully, those eggs were properly aged. Too bad the protester wasn't more closely related to Al Hrabosky.

awesome :D

I see Ballmer took SHELLter behind the desk wink

May 19, 08 - 02:26 pm Comment from: ericdano

Wow, Ballmer is such an assclown.

May 19, 08 - 02:26 pm Comment from: John

Did you see the guy who had to pick up his laptop as the egger moved? It was a macbook--sweet smile

May 19, 08 - 02:29 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

Needs a bigger desk obviously. Lets hope the eggs have salmonella.

May 19, 08 - 02:29 pm Comment from: eric24601

notice the guy sitting next to the needler was using a Macbook.

May 19, 08 - 02:31 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Next time, aisle seat.

May 19, 08 - 02:34 pm Comment from: Spark

I know it was Ballmer, but I still dislike disruptive idiots like that. His shirt was enough. There is always someone with an axe to grind. Each one of us most likely has someone out there that would like to throw an egg at us for some real or imagined transgression. Next time it might be some Greenpeace activist tossing an egg as Steve Jobs. Not cool.

May 19, 08 - 02:34 pm Comment from: ha

I love how no one tries to stop him

If some one tried this with jobs
the mac faithful would tackle him and beat him senseless with a dell laptop

May 19, 08 - 02:36 pm Comment from: breakfast

Now on the menu:

Eggs Vista
(eggs, slightly broken, with Ham, served in a pocket)

I am Hungary

May 19, 08 - 02:37 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

To give Ballmer a little credit, he handled that very well. By now he should be very thick skinned.
I disagree with his vision, tactics, and past antics, but he really did not deserve that. As a teenager, I was guilty of putting snakes in mailboxes, blew up paper boxes with M-80's, changed the words on church signs on Saturday night, hit cars with muskedines, and co-egged busses for rival high schools. But that guy went too way too far. He really crossed the line. I don't like Ballmer, but I would never do that. He actually shined and gets my first positive comment ever.

May 19, 08 - 02:38 pm Comment from: Aaplsaur

Inappropriate behavior that I cannot condone. Let him know how you feel about him, but don't debase yourself in the process. Let Monkeyboy be the chair thrower.

May 19, 08 - 02:38 pm Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

I've seen this done to all sorts of politicians and celebs that I personally don't like and you know what? I've never thought it was cool. I can't help thinking that it makes the thrower look just as much of an asshole as the recipient.

An egg's capable of causing a great deal of injury if it hits the right spot (eye, temple etc). It'll happen one day and even though I can't stand Ballmer, I can't gloat over this.

May 19, 08 - 02:40 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

@ha,

If there was a Dell laptop to be had.

May 19, 08 - 02:42 pm Comment from: Kevin

Egging and other forms of public humiliation at other people's expense are immature and show absolutely no class. Make a point by not buying/using their products, don't egg. Hold yourself to a higher standard, they may call us Mac Snobs, but let's not digress to low levels of degradation.

Remember, Baller provides plenty of fodder to us, we don't need to create it on our own.

Now, had everyone shown up with a MacBook and iPod/iPhone earbuds . . . that would've been a sight to see.

May 19, 08 - 02:42 pm Comment from: Gabriel

The egger's boorish behavior almost makes Ballmer look sympathetic in comparison - not exactly the outcome he was going for, I'd wager.

Still, when you consider the billions (trillions?) Microsoft has unfairly extorted from the world as a whole with their shoddy software and monopoly lock-in tactics, an egg or two in the face is pretty mild retribution, really.

May 19, 08 - 02:45 pm Comment from: James

Yeah, that's just rude. But it's a telling statement about people's feelings toward Microsoft. Back in their heyday one couldn't waltz over to Youtube and see a video; I'm sure the incident would have never made the press. Their grip loosens more and more with every passing day in this day and age of freely available information.

May 19, 08 - 02:46 pm Comment from: Steve516

Well, I am no fan of Ballmer or M$ but I have to say, any time a physical assault is used as a means to communicate, regardless of the message, I am disappointed. Violence is the last resort, when all other forms of communication have failed.

And it would have been funnier if there were multiple protesters yelling at him and throwing eggs. One sole protester looks like a kook.

The Ballmer videos on youtube are just amazing. How Gates could give control of his company to such a moron is really stunning.

May 19, 08 - 02:47 pm Comment from: Mac User since 1984

This kind of behavior is never acceptable, no matter who the target is.

May 19, 08 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Pathetic

This kind of low-class hooligan-protest is desperate and childish. I actually felt sorry for Ballmer (imagine that!), and say huzzah for him for getting a laugh and carrying on.

May 19, 08 - 02:48 pm Comment from: HMCIV

I'm disgusted and I can't believe you people would actually egg encourage such insolent and childish behavior. Steve Ballmer is man in charge of a company, not a monster.

And those eggs were wasted on a man. They deserved better. Those eggs could have been poached, scrambled, or hatched and raised as chickens, to be served fried, baked, grilled, or perhaps combined with other eggs to make a chicken omelette (which Freudian by the way). Instead they were shamelessly wasted.

A respectful moment of silence for the eggs, and the person who missed out on eating those eggs. I may never read another MDN post again because of this... unless I have an egg and cheese sandwich to go with it.

May 19, 08 - 02:51 pm Comment from: Steven P Jobs

Not cool.

Not cool at all.

May 19, 08 - 03:01 pm Comment from: Not Bill

Throwing eggs is ineffective. The man just seems a bit nuts. Too bad there was not a more widespread, orderly display of indignation at the M$ rip off.

May 19, 08 - 03:02 pm Comment from: MacUnCool

This kind of behavior is never welcomed. I commend Steve Ballmer for taking it in stride. I'm not a fan of Microsoft, but still, this kind of behavior is just not cool.

May 19, 08 - 03:03 pm Comment from: wyorancher

Low class and boorish behavior and for once it wasn't Ballmer doing it.
Totally wrong.
Say your piece or save it for Q&A;.
Nobody deserves this (maybe the government of Myanmar (sp.). But this was wrong.
No two ways about it.
And I dislike Ballmer as much as any of you.

May 19, 08 - 03:04 pm Comment from: Artist

In these times, you never know if someone is pulling out an egg or a gun. Must of scared the sh*t out of Balmer. Not cool

May 19, 08 - 03:05 pm Comment from: iWill

I agree, tres not cool, but was Ballmer ducking behind The BigAss Table? See, it IS useful afterall!

May 19, 08 - 03:06 pm Comment from: Timbo

Ballmer took it in stride - good for him.
He has now met somebody kookier than his own kooky self.

May 19, 08 - 03:06 pm Comment from: Ampar

It does give new meaning to the word ovation.

May 19, 08 - 03:07 pm Comment from: jtc

everyone seems to be complaining about how wrong this is to throw eggs at someone.... I didn't hear the tape just watched it... not the best to do but.... wish I saw him get hit with an egg or two. Just think back in the 80's and early 90's when they would just take over companies and such.... im sure many people would have loved to toss an egg or two.

Either or... M$ is making their own grave.

May 19, 08 - 03:09 pm Comment from: no longer my eMac

"That broke my train of thought" said Ballmer.

Thought? You actually have thoughts? I find that hard to believe.

May 19, 08 - 03:13 pm Comment from: Man on the Street

The protester was escorted outside and flogged with a Microsoft mouse.

May 19, 08 - 03:14 pm Comment from: Ampar

The Seattle Post Intelligencer just couldn't resist:
"Egg-thrower makes Ballmer scramble"

It could have been worse. He could have used the whole chicken.

May 19, 08 - 03:16 pm Comment from: Ampar

And what did the eggs have to say after all this?
Not a peep.

May 19, 08 - 03:18 pm Comment from: Aaquib

I clicked on this video thinking I was in for a laugh, but WTF, that guy was a nut! File a petition, get a group to argue, but don't just go around throwing eggs you fuc*ing maniac! Kudos for Ballmer for handling that well.

May 19, 08 - 03:21 pm Comment from: zek

T0 all you superior types who find this behavior so unacceptable, it's simply nothing compared to this:
http://www.garfnet.org.uk/joomla/content/view/118/16/

"Make a point by not buying/using their products, don't egg."

Well that's the whole point, they have been unable to 'not buy' the product.

May 19, 08 - 03:23 pm Comment from: Pun Patrol

I'm just glad they showed him to the eggsit quichely.

May 19, 08 - 03:25 pm Comment from: 7over

This is a case where "the enemy of my enemy" is not always my friend.

Putting myself in SB's shoes, I hope I would handle myself as well as he did, which was far better than the miscreant that tossed the eggs!

May 19, 08 - 03:26 pm Comment from: My 2 Cents

Much as I may disagree with Mr. Ballmer and his leadership, this is completely uncalled-for and disrespectful. Protestors like this are people with a few bad ideas that need to use violence to "prove their point."

Ballmer did a good job handling the situation - kudos to him for the way he handled this.

May 19, 08 - 03:26 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

Punish the guy by making him use Vista, Virtual PC, and a Zune for the rest of his life. Or better yet, let him be roomies with Zune Tang for a year.

May 19, 08 - 03:26 pm Comment from: MacRaven

Hey, the guy could have thrown a chair.
Now who did that? hmmm? I can't work up a whole lot of sympathy for someone getting an egg, who himself has tossed chairs.

What goes around comes around as mom always said.

May 19, 08 - 03:28 pm Comment from: Dialtone

I'm with Spark, Pierre and Blue Dream et al...

Not cool -- too high school Halloween.

May 19, 08 - 03:29 pm Comment from: Ampar

Those eggs might be the only things in that room that have been laid.

May 19, 08 - 03:31 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

Reality is that it easily could have been a gun.
I think this will give a wake up call to lots of CEO's, including Steve Jobs. Ballmer may actually win when it come to mercy...I fear what would happen if someone threw eggs at Steve Jobs. If it had been a streaker with a cream pie, it would have been hilarious, but throwing raw eggs is terrible.

May 19, 08 - 03:32 pm Comment from: Pun Patrol

I know when I'm outclassed.

May 19, 08 - 03:34 pm Comment from: Who? What?

A streaker with a cream pie would have been okay?
Are you serious?

May 19, 08 - 03:37 pm Comment from: Eddie

Ampar, remember when you asked me to tell you when you were being a tit? Well you're doing it now.

May 19, 08 - 03:38 pm Comment from: Eric

That was really uncalled for. How many hypocrites are cheering somebody throwing eggs at Ballmer over nothing but cursing countries at war?

May 19, 08 - 03:45 pm Comment from: Chicago

eh... he throws like a girl

May 19, 08 - 03:50 pm Comment from: Buster

@Eddie...fer crissakes....can you not understand humour. Ampar is the D'Artagnan of jokesters with his rapier wit. Many of us come to read his funny posts. Is egg throwing cool? No and I didn't see him write 'Death to Ballmer' either.
Now sit back and take a deep draw on a big cup of STFU.

May 19, 08 - 03:50 pm Comment from: Gabriel

Inappropriate and uncivilized. Shameful behavior.
