Steve Jobs to deliver WWDC 2008 keynote June 9

“Although no official announcement has been made, Apple public relations confirmed to Fortune that Steve Jobs will deliver a keynote address on June 9, the first day of the 2008 World Wide Developers conference,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt blogs for Fortune.

“It is widely expected that Jobs will use that speech to unveil the next generation of iPhones, including a so-called 3G model,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

“The drumroll has already started on Apple’s website, where users can download a Dashboard widget counting down the hours before the June 9 WWDC by the days, hours, minutes and seconds,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

  1. “…including a so-called 3G model…”

So-called?? It will either use that technology or not. Maybe it is a so-called “Blackberry Killer”; that would be a better use of the phrase.

  2. “I can’t imagine them waiting until June 9 in release a new one.”

3G iPhone could be released before June 9… then Steve Jobs’ WWDC speech will be about something else. After all, it’s going to be a developer conference, so I assume the speech will be about software.

  3. @Mac+

that’s what I’m thinking. The iPhone has been out long enough that they don’t need an entire conference to discuss its update. The new iPhone will be released before hand, and be discussed at the conference, but there will be other news. Something “new”.

  4. @ Fitz

indeed, I was told last year by a guy who happened to be “connected” that Apple was working on something “new” that would blow people minds, or even shift the computing world paradigm, bla bla bla… people always say that. At the same time you never know from Apple. Maybe there’s something new.

Anyway, we still don’t know what lies behind the slogan of this year WWDC. Mystery guarantee!!!

  5. From a marketing perspective it would make a lot of sense to release a more exclusive and expensive device (bigger with more battery) with 3G capability, and only update the iPhone to 3G later.
That expensive device would be a Newton-like thing, a little larget than the iPhone and therefore with much more battery grunt, that you can also use as a phone and as a GSM bridge to your MacBook [Pro|Air]. Or you could use it standalone. It will have the “back to my mac” feature, so you have access to all your files wherever you are, even without having to carry your notebook with you.
Fits in nicely with recent rumors about revamped .Mac.
    You heard it here first ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  6. There are few things i look forward to more than watching Steve Jobs communicate in public. He really loves his company, and everything he does. I wish the month would fly by already.

  7. indeed, I was told last year by a guy who happened to be “connected” that Apple was working on something “new” that would blow people minds, or even shift the computing world paradigm, bla bla bla… people always say that.

Well the bar of expectations is set high for any Stevenote.

Unless the industry is left slack-jawed (and not just by the RDF), it’ll be called “lackluster” etc.

Hard to say what’s up Steve’s sleeve. As always, anything’s posssible.

  8. “The drumroll has already started on Apple’s website, where users can download a Dashboard widget counting down the hours before the June 9 WWDC by the days, hours, minutes and seconds,”

Only in seconds? Pfft. What kinda slop is that?

    I want this baby down to CPU clock cycles. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  9. My sources (which asked not to be identified) have revealed that a new phone product is coming from Apple in the not too distant future. Remember you heard this news first here on MDN. Now go do something meaningful.

  10. “How about new Cinema displays?”

With Apple TV integrated maybe… otherwise it ain’t worth a keynote. Also what’s the relation between that and the WWDC ’09 slogan? No, the note got to do with application development for wireless devices + probably some new hardware to come along with it.

  11. When the iPhone was announced, Jobs first said that Apple had created 3 (three) breakthrough devices:

    1) Phone
    2) iPod with full screen and touch screen controls
    3) Internet communications device

Well, we got the iPhone first, then the iPod Touch came out months later. Is it possible that the Internet Communications Device is an iTablet of some sorts?

MDN: let. “let me be right”
