Study: Apple iPhone users richer, younger, more productive than other so-called ‘smartphone’ users
Friday, June 12, 2009 - 04:02 PM EST

"iPhone users are richer, younger, and perhaps even more productive at work than those who use competing smartphones, according to a new study released Friday," Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

"The study ($750 fee) from independent market analysis company Forrester Research suggests iPhone users comprise the elite upper class of smartphone customers. The data was compiled from 32,228 working U.S. adults in 2008," Hughes reports. "It found that those who own an iPhone are typically more active on their phones and more connected to the internet than those who fell into generic 'smartphone' or 'mobile phone' categories.”

"The study, compiled by Ted Schadler, found that iPhone users are 'more than twice as likely to access the Internet from their phone as working BlackBerry, Palm, or Windows Mobile device owners.' The research was inspired by anecdotal comments from companies such as Kraft Foods and Oracle that implied employees have a personal drive to use an iPhone at work, even when one is not provided by the employer," Hughes reports. "The research suggests that an employee with an iPhone could be more productive: Those who carry Apple’s handheld device are more likely to stay connected to their employer’s network."

Hughes reports, "Among the study’s other findings: iPhone users are younger. 30 percent of iPhone users in 2008 were of Generation Y, a larger portion than the rest of the smartphone market. iPhone users are more educated and affluent. 49 percent of iPhone users have a college education, and 67 percent earn more than $70,000 a year."

And this is different than Apple users in general?

I have a friend that keeps a small toy elephant in the center of his living room, just sitting there, on the floor.

If you ask about it he says, "Just ignore that."

He's richer and younger and more clever than any iPhone user.

That's a lot of people earning over $70,000 without a college education...interesting!`

Jun 12, 09 - 03:26 pm Comment from: iPhoner

I would be richer and more productive if I didn't keep checking MDN for news stories.

Hmmm... That does not necessarily mean they are more "productive" at doing their actual jobs. smile

Well, I've got the education part down, but I'm older and poorer than (most of) the rest of you, apparently. And no, thelonious, I'm no snappier, either. I do LOOOVE me some iPhone, though.

Jun 12, 09 - 04:20 pm Comment from: Nobama

Most interesting are the stats that have more to do with the usability of the phone than the snobbery value.

The percentage of weekly texting, emailing, and web surfing iPhone users do is 75%, while the rest are all below 50%.

I text, email and surf multiple times a day, let alone weekly.
Actually, I was habitually texting internationally until I got the bill.
Won't do that again.

Point is, everything is so retardedly easy on my 1st gen. iPhone.
If you have a spare moment it's nothing to shoot off an email or look up a movie on IMDB.com.

Richer? You couldn't tell if you came to the federally-funded free clinic that I work at. 99% of the people who come there are on welfare and almost 99% of the moms of my patients (Pediatrics is one of my 2 Board certifications) have iPhones.

So that makes WinMo users Morons? Isn't that how the WinMo... oh it means Windows Mobile. I always thought it meant Windows Morons! LOL

Jun 12, 09 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

I-Phone owners are rich, smug elite? No surprise there. Wake up Forrester Research, so are MAC users! I would like to see how much of that online usage is comprised of burp and fart app over the internet. It has to be around 75-80%.

And another thing. Productivity is overrated. What really matters is acquisition cost, replaceable batteries and integration with Windows-centric technologies. Based on those three criteria the I-Phone is a huge disappointment.

The site isn't slow under safari 4 for me. Imagine how fast it would be on an ethernet connection instead of this Airport connection.

Jun 12, 09 - 05:50 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

jarrettdalynews. Your Airpot connection, even at "G" speed is faster then your internet by a long shot. So no, your wifi is not the bottleneck, it's your ISP or the server that your are attempting to contact. Copy 100 MB file from one Mac to the another on your WiFi, then download 100 MB and you will see what I mean.

Jun 12, 09 - 09:20 pm Comment from: The Campaign is Over

Who wrote this MDN header? Barack Obama? While technically the study indicates iPhone users have a higher household income. When the threshold is $70k, the word "richer" is not one that I would use.

@ Ottawa Mark--

A college degree is a piece of paper. Don't get me wrong, it's a piece if paper worth having, but it isn't a guarantee of any kind.

On the flip side, the lack of that piece of paper is not an automatic disqualifier either.

Neither case indicates intelligence, nor the incapacity to accomplish above average results.

I was a smart kid growing up. I was in the "gifted class" in school, and I skipped seventh grade. At some point though, I decided not to take high school seriously. I knew how to do my work, but I chose not to. Three weeks before graduation, I was informed that I was short a semester's worth of credits to graduate. I managed to catch up though, in the time given, and I barely graduated.

I took some classes in community college, and decided to drop out.

I made $150k last year, so I'd say it didn't turn out for the worse. College is great, but it isn't for everyone, and it isn't necessary in order to be successful.

Jun 13, 09 - 11:53 am Comment from: Feester Famon

It looks likes somes peoples know how to game the system better than others. Fortunately the millions of welfare people gaming the system all add up to a minute amoute when compared to some of the fat cat low life corporate pirates who skim millions for themselves like the hedge fund guys and the healthcare executives who are funding a campaign against universal healthcare or even a public option because they would have to compete against a non profit big bad government. So if a few people who have bee abused by the system take advantage and indulge in an iPhone then good for them. Obvious conservatives and iPhone lovers should applaud their abilities to provide themselves with an iPhone. Also they are showing good taste in smartphone choice. It's the honest hardworking, Non system gaming, lower middle class, without healthcare peple I feel bad for. They play by the rules and because they have been dealt a bad hand, they will probably go through life without being able to enjoy the simple pleasure that is an iPhone. Those are the people that lose out the most.

Cubert, do you live in the Netherlands, France, or Canada? All of their iPhone users have federally-funded health care.

Jun 14, 09 - 05:01 pm Comment from: Big Al

I think it's safe to say that everywhere the iPhone is sold there is federally-funded health care.

The United States of America is the only country where the federally-funded health care is not UNIVERSAL.

Only in The United States of America would a federally-funded health care patient sporting an iPhone be considered a good for nothing freeloader.

Jun 14, 09 - 06:33 pm Comment from: Edward

Well, I don't agree with rich. Just look at iPhone price. It is only less than $300 maxium. If you think you are middle class, you can easily get one. Don't you? Anyway, there is nothing to say 'smarter'? I am not sure. I just wonder how many people actually take advantage of all function & features on iPhone? I doubt not many. That's why somebody calls it 'gabage can' which is so stupid not to know how to use it well.

Jun 15, 09 - 08:39 am Comment from: iTruth

Believe it or not, buying an iPhone will not give you these characteristics.

They are the effect of the fact that the iPhone is still a premium priced phone with a premium priced plan. Therefore compared to a free phone with no data plan it is targeted at more affluent consumers.
