Supply of Apple iPhones runs dry in Canada and Australia

Apple Online Store “It’s been in the spotlight more than almost any other product of the information age, but the iPhone is becoming hard to find in Canada,” Simon Avery reports for The Globe and Mail.

“Apple Inc. is shipping limited supplies of its smart phone to Rogers Communications Inc., the only Canadian wireless operator able to carry the device, as the California company scrambles to try to meet global demand that appears to have exceeded its own forecasts,” Avery reports.

“Rogers is advising shoppers that it is out of stock of Apple’s latest device, the iPhone 3GS, which was launched in June, as well as earlier models introduced last summer. The wireless carrier is telling visitors to its website that the newest device will be available again in the coming weeks,” Avery reports. “Rogers’ discount brand, Fido, is also out of stock, although some Fido stores said they had older devices, with significantly less memory, available.”

Avery reports, “Liz Hamilton, a spokeswoman for Rogers, said the iPhone remains popular and demand is high. ‘We are out of stock and still taking orders as our inventory continues to come in week to week,’ she said. ‘While we have continuous incoming inventory, we are filling back orders on a priority basis and we appreciate the enthusiasm and patience of our customers.'”

Avery reports, “Phone companies around the world have been adjusting to the shortage, and some markets, such as Australia, said this month their supply of iPhones had been exhausted.”

  1. If you go to an Apple store you will also see the demand for exchanges is also high… Back to back appointments for swaps. Apple is out of stock in some locations for exchange units…

Apple does about 500 iPhone swaps a day per store!

That is an alarming rate for defects… I had to wait for my swap and continue to use my defective phone until Apple was able to refurb the phones quickly ;(

In all media, yours is the first I’ve heard of this supposed cataclysmic deluge of 3GSs so defective that they must be swapped out.
Until I see some back up for such an extraordinary claim, I call “troll”.

“Apple does about 500 iPhone swaps a day per store!”

No way. There aren’t even 500 genius appointments per store in one day. In addition, that would mean about 50,000 swaps for all stores every day, or about 1.5 million swaps per month! That’s practically more than they sell.

“Apple does about 500 iPhone swaps a day per store!”

200 stores * 500 swaps per day is 100,000 swaps per day. If you assume they’re closed 2 days per year that means Apple is doing 36.3 MILLION iPhone swaps a year.

He can’t show his research, because he made that number up, or someone else made it up and told it to him. At any rate, it’s complete B.S., because it would have to mean EVERY iPhone is being swapped out for service.

  5. People, people…

The heat is getting to you, like it gets to a white iPhone…

    @Peter is NOT “Peter”.

eighter apple has some kind of production problem or demand is unbelievable high.

    book an appointment for iPhone

check the dates/times… back to back booked solid.

go to an Apple store if you like…. Stay by the Genius bar.

See the back to back lineups for swaps … Check it out and report back to me… If you get anything less… I will give you a reward… Deal?

I meant 500 units a week per store… my bad.

I know. My friend works for Apple. And I got all the info from him.

  9. 500 x 52 = 26,000 units per store per year x 200 stores

5 million units…. in total just for stores… add Applecare or service providers… We are talking crap loads here…

If Apple sells 20 million units, that is a lot of returns… don’t take my word for it…. go to an Apple store and pretend you are buying like everyone else does (stay there for 30 minutes) and you will see 3 swaps go ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> LOL that might make you wake up and smell the coffee!

My friend works at the Genius bar and says so many people have defective phones!

  11. One iPhone allegedly explodes in France and it’s all over the international news. 500 iPhone returns per Apple store per week and there isn’t a peep in the press except for Peter.

You have to build up to the big lie, Peter.
