Supply of white Apple iPhone 3GS models runs dry

"Apple has been having trouble keeping the entry-level white iPhone in stock since the new 3GS went on sale two and a half weeks ago. But as of Tuesday morning, it has all but disappeared," Phillip Elmer-Dewitt reports for Fortune.

"The 16 GB model — apparently the most popular — is out of stock in the 30 of the 41 states in which Apple has stores, as well as in the District of Columbia," Elmer-Dewitt reports. "It’s available in only one of California’s 45 Apple Stores, 1 of 9 in Massachusetts, 1 of 7 in Illinois, 1 of 6 in Virginia and 1 of 3 New York City."

Elmer-Dewitt reports, "It’s not clear whether demand for the white 16GB model is unusually high, or if Apple just isn’t making enough of them."

A went with a white iPhone with this upgrade just so I would have something that looked different than my last black iPhone. I suspect a lot of upgraders did the same.

I went white because wife had black and it would be easier to tell apart. But I really like the white, I'm starting to think it looks classier.

I'd bet they did not produce as many white models as they did black models, especially in the smaller 16gb size...

I agree with Steve516

I'm sure they looked back at sales of the white 16GB compared to the black and shipped certain amounts according to the info. Its a most obvious statement to say the black one probably sold a lot more.

I switched to a white 32G for something differnent. My sister thought it was a great idea so she went with white also - 16G.
