Survey: Apple iPod bigger than beer among college students
Thursday, June 08, 2006 - 07:11 AM EST

"Move over Bud. College life isn't just about drinking beer. In a rare instance, Apple Computer Inc.'s iconic iPod music player surpassed beer drinking as the most 'in' thing among undergraduate college students, according to the latest biannual market research study by Ridgewood, N.J.-based Student Monitor," The Associated Press reports. "Nearly three quarters, or 73 percent, of 1,200 students surveyed said iPods were 'in' - more than any other item in a list that also included text messaging, bar hopping and downloading music. In the year-ago study, only 59 percent of students named the iPod as 'in,' putting the gadget well below alcohol-related activities."

"This year, drinking beer and Facebook.com, a social networking Web site, were tied for second most popular, with 71 percent of the students identifying them as 'in,'" The Associated Press reports, "The only other time beer was temporarily dethroned in the 18 years of the survey was in 1997 - by the Internet, said Eric Weil, a managing partner at Student Monitor... Student Monitor conducted the survey the week of March 6, interviewing full-time undergraduate students at 100 U.S. colleges. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.3 percentage points."

Students obviously getting wiser and have realised that with your iPod you get to get to use it and keep it but with beer no matter how much you use it you never get to keep it!!!

When will they learn that Buttwiper... Budweiser... ISN'T beer!

Jun 08, 06 - 07:47 am Comment from: scott

this doesn't surprise me...after all, budweiser is just guinness filtered through the kidneys.

Jun 08, 06 - 07:47 am Comment from: Peaze

These students need to get their priorities sorted. Mind you, if it mentioned Bud in the survey I can see their point.

After such results I am wondering why some Universities strike deals with the like of Napster, Real, MS, etc.

Jun 08, 06 - 07:54 am Comment from: KaramaData

Of course it's hot, now instead of carrying around burned cd's of music, letting everyone know your a pirate, you can walk around undercover with a flashy iPod.

Jun 08, 06 - 07:56 am Comment from: Brit

You don't buy beer, you only rent it.

Isn´t that a take off on the line from the 60s:
"Mariuana is quite the amazing phenom. If you´ve smoked it, you know why."

beer + iPod = pretty dangerous

Don't drop it in your beer man

Jun 08, 06 - 08:48 am Comment from: Joe Student

Well, all that beer drinking makes it easier for us non-drinking students to get ahead of them in the workplace later.

More braincells!

Bwahahahaha!

TTzz,
You are either one extremely active person or someone who has never tested your hypothesis. Most folk who try to both drink beer and eat something resembling "real food" get to keep their beer until way beyond the point where they are good and "tired" of it. As in "spare tire".

As for the snotty anti-Bud comments ... Right On, Dudes, to hearken back to a time somewhere between today and my own wasted years in college. These days I drink Guinness when the weather's cold, cider when the weather's hot, and single malt whenever I like. Brain cells? Who needs 'em! confused

Jun 08, 06 - 09:39 am Comment from: rlhamon

I don't believe this ... or I hope not to believe it!

Beer is less popular than an iPod with college students ... the end is near!
THE END IS NEAR!!

or this story is complete bullshit .. that is what I believe.

Re: "After buying an ipod, they can't afford beer?"

I don't think this story holds much beer...er, water.

The laws of the universe dictate two proven facts:

1. College students will drink anything and everything to maintain a buzz throughout the weekend.
2. They are required to be completely hung over by their first class Monday morning.
Note: All requirements are null and void when cramming for final examinations.

Jun 08, 06 - 11:46 am Comment from: LordRobin

Hey! I managed to get through college and grad school without drinking! Then again, I also managed to get through most of college and grad school without a girlfriend. (I can laugh now, being happily married.)

Jun 08, 06 - 02:31 pm Comment from: don't know about now

When I was in college, if you gave me $260 to buy a Nano, I could do it and have enough left over to drink Burgie/Shaeffer(sp?)/Keystone all weekend.

"or this story is complete bullshit .. that is what I believe.

---> Agreed. This is one of the most ridiculous stories I've ever heard. Gotta go, a Sasquatch is breaking into my house.

Nice hi-grade journalism MDN.

For every one iPod sold today, one billion cans of beer will be sold. The iPod is losing market share in the "adult beverage" industry. Apple needs to do something ASAP!
