Survey says: Apple iPhone ‘is going to be a monster’

Apple Store“Apple’s iPhone will be highly sought-after when it debuts in June, according to a new survey,” Patrick Seitz reports for Investor’s Business Daily.

“The combination mobile phone, Internet device and widescreen iPod media player has been the talk of the tech world since Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs unveiled it in January,” Seitz reports.

Seitz reports, “A survey of tech-savvy professionals by ChangeWave Research to be released Friday indicates that demand will be high for the iPhone. About one in 10 respondents (9%) say they are likely to buy the iPhone once it becomes available. Another 7% say they are likely to buy the iPhone as a gift for someone else. ‘That’s huge,’ said ChangeWave founder Tobin Smith. ‘This is going to be a monster.’

“The survey results indicate a much faster adoption curve than is typical for a consumer electronics product, Smith says. If the iPhone’s performance lives up to consumer expectations, sales should exceed Apple’s sales goals, he says,” Seitz reports.

“In the survey, ChangeWave polled nearly 3,500 people April 4-10. Respondents were members of the ChangeWave Alliance, a group of 10,000 business, technology and medical professionals who work on the frontline of technological change, the pollster says,” Seitz reports.

Seitz reports, “Among likely buyers, 79% say they would dump their existing wireless carrier and switch to AT&T to use the new iPhone, ChangeWave says.”

  1. I DO believe it will be huge and will be a wonderful device…but the 2nd Generation iPhone will be

    1. Cheaper
    2. Have more capacity
    3. Have more features
    4. Be more stable.

    I will wait…

  2. A monster? Don’t make me laugh. Who did they survey? Pansy Mac babies? I’ll tell you this: a couple of monsters have already been unleashed and they go by the names Zune and Motorola Q.

Apple’s itty bitty sissy iPhone will be no match for the magnificent Zune and the awesome Motorola Q, and here’s why: the iPhone doesn’t run Microsoft Office and doesn’t have enough buttons. Have you seen all the buttons on a Q? Awesome! Don’t forget that thing runs Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile!

The WOW is very much now my friends.

  3. @pr

Why wait for the 2nd generation iPhone? Why not wait for the 3rd? How ’bout the 4th that’s coming? Dang, can you even IMAGINE what the 5th generation will look like?

As for me, I’m waiting for 10G iPhone. Your 3rd will look like a brick!

  4. No Squirt – I’m pretty sure that no company with that name currently exists. The company that once bore that name (not counting its breakup, re-emergence and the fact that it’s actually SBC) is now named AT&T Corporation. (The same goes for the companies formerly known as Radio Corporation of America, the Columbia Broadcasting System, and probably a host of others. I’m not sure about International Business Machines.)

  5. @pr,

I agree with Randian. The first generation iPhone will be much better than any other phone on the market, and that’s all you can ever hope for when buying. Sure, later models will be even better, but that’s always the case, and no reason to wait.

MDN Magic Word: wanted, as in: I’ve always wanted visual voicemail.

  6. @Zune Tang

If Microslop made toilets, they’d flush in reverse.
    WOW = Wailing Over Waste

I hope that is sufficently scatalogical, in keeping with the brown Zune. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  7. Hi Follower: Just a mediocre attempt at humor. Or humour, even. Speaking of anachronisms, it’s funny that people still say they’re dialing a phone number. I used to hate numbers with lots of nines and zeros.

(Kentucky Fried Chicken is now KFC.)

  8. No Squirt said:
“And MS won’t be able to stop themselves from copying Apple again. The Zhone?”

The difference will be that the Zhone will squirt… not sure what it will squirt though.

BTW, the reason for the rename of KFC is because “fried” is a bad word healthwise.

  9. I think that mobile phones are great for families with kids or for coordinating social functions. However, I COMPLETELY escaped the need for a mobile phone, but will get a Tracfone the next time I fly in winter; last winter was a headache with delayed flights.

Given that the iPhone will be easy to misplace, just as with any mobile phone, or presents a security risk as it can hold a wealth of data and can get stolen, and has a smaller screen than a Mac Plus, just what is the intrigue of the iPhone? Something to brag about?

  10. @Thorin – that’s funny, I’m still waiting for the $384 million to be wired to my account from Dr. Sulemon Muhammad in Zimbabwe. He said I could keep 10% as a fee for helping him. Not that I’m doing it for the money, I just like helping people, ya know. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  11. A few questions for y’all:

    1) Do you think Apple will be able to provide the supply to meet the demand, or will we face a situation like the Wii and be forced to pay-up on Ebay in order to get one?

    2) When do you think Apple will update the iPhone; e.g., increasing the memory to 16GB or enabling the chipset for 3G networking…by Christmas, or would doing so tread upon sales of the 6G iPod?

  12. “Given that the iPhone will be easy to misplace, just as with any mobile phone, or presents a security risk as it can hold a wealth of data and can get stolen, and has a smaller screen than a Mac Plus, just what is the intrigue of the iPhone? Something to brag about?”

Well that was *almost* the dumbest thing I’ve read all day.

  13. Welcome home Zune Tang.

I’m looking forward to the Zhone phone, inc (of course) classic brown, or possibly even classic brown simulated wood veneer.

ps. MDN where are the smileys?

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  14. “They’ll squirt text messages.”

But the words, anti-trust and abusive monopoly will be pre-screened out. And any instance of the use of the word, innovation will be adjusted by adding “Microsoft” before it.

    Microsoft.
    Our Truth. Your Gullibility.

  15. “Given that the iPhone doesn’t dispense feminine or intimate products, has no internal refrigerator, and has a smaller screen than a drive in, just what is the intrigue of the iPhone? Something to brag about?”

Makes a similar point, don’t you think?

  16. @Not a phone slave
“I think that mobile phones are great for families with kids or for coordinating social functions. However, I COMPLETELY escaped the need for a mobile phone, but will get a Tracfone the next time I fly in winter; last winter was a headache with delayed flights”

So you *are* a phone slave when you need the convience.
Many people like the ability to conduct business (both personnal and office) at almost any time.

I am not sure what side of the fence you are on here.

Also if history is any indicator, 2008 June M$ will announce the coming of the Zhone Pune.

  17. Sometimes I hate the digital leash, hell we can’t even bring them into my workplace (classified). There are times though, whoo. Ever had a drunken friend run the boat out of gas WAY upriver from anything civilized? Uh, yeah.

  18. I use Cricket wireless, but it’s not available in all areas. It’s unlimited minutes 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

There needs to be a revolt against Verizon and AT&T because there’s no reason they can’t offer unlimited minutes.

they have the consumer hoodwinked into thinking that plans with restricted minute usage is OK.

  19. I never trust these kinds of surveys. Such internet buzz also made it clear that “Snakes on a Plane” was going to the biggest money-making movie of all time. Once it got here nobody went. It’s easy to say that it’s great, you’ll buy it, tell me more, etc., but that frequently doesn’t translate into actual action. Only way to know about pent-up demand is to look at how the first 30 days shakes out.
