What about an upgraded iPod touch to keep it on par with the iPhone? The iPod touch DOES sell better!

Jun 10, 09 - 08:29 am Comment from: jarrettdailynews

Yeah, First gen iphone owner, GoPhone plan. Month to month payments here. If they keep updating the iPod Touch with similar specs to the iPhone, like I don't know, everything but the phone, I will never have to buy another phone. Well, not until my wife wants one.

Apple II released this day on 1977.

"Apple II released this day on 1977"

Let’s all bow our heads for a moment and give thanks to the master.

My Apple II, bought in 1979, had 48K of RAM and TWO 5.25" floppies. Talk about cutting edge. Hooked that baby up to a daisy wheel printer and a 12" color tv and off we went. Even thought about a modem.

The total cost of the system would buy two iMacs and a color laser printer today and have money left on the table. I love this stuff.

Jun 10, 09 - 09:07 am Comment from: Now That This is Settled

Whew... I'm glad T-Mobile has done this! I guess the WWDC didn't make things clear enough.

Almost as fast as my eMac.

Jun 10, 09 - 09:47 am Comment from: Quad core

HMMMM, I guess that makes this phone a better graphics workstation than my dual 2Ghz G5.

Jun 10, 09 - 10:00 am Comment from: Jeff B.

Apple won't upgrade the iPod Touch until the "Back to School, buy a Mac get a Touch" promotion is over; they have to clear inventory some way. Every year as soon as that promotion is over, then Apple updates the iPod line.

This is why I'm waiting on the iPhone 3GS. I'm a first gen iPhone user and I think that Apple will intro a new iPhone at the CES show in January. I think the iPhone 3GS is kinda like the 1st gen of the Unibody 15" MacBook Pro with the removable battery. It was great to see the refinement of the MacBook, but it's replaced with the new sealed battery 15" Unibody MacBook Pro months later, when the design was refined. I'm happy with my 1st Gen 2G iPhone, and can wait until CES to see if a new iPhone comes out.

Getting mine June 19th--so stoked.

Jun 10, 09 - 11:59 am Comment from: Tomas

How does that compare to the super fast Pre? I don't understand these numbers. Guess that shows my age.

Jun 10, 09 - 12:57 pm Comment from: Roger

@Tomas
The iPhone is still slower than the Pre. Much slower and no multitasking. And you gotta know that Tom Tom is going to be a subscription like Verizon GPS. $9.99 a month or $2.99 a day.

@Roger

"The iPhone is still slower than the Pre. Much slower..."

Citation, please.

"...and no multitasking."

Except for the clock, and iTunes, of course. Which doesn't stutter. Ever. I am sure you meant to say "Limited multitasking to preserve battery life", didn't you?

Jun 10, 09 - 02:49 pm Comment from: Tomas

@MTMacphee
You seem pretty sharp. Nobody has answered my question. So can you tell me how the specs in this article compare with Pre specs? I really do not have a good understanding of this stuff. I am a grandpa after all so what is important as far as specs?

Jun 10, 09 - 02:58 pm Comment from: iPhun

@Tomas
Here is Pre info, and it is almost exactly the same as the 3GS. The key feature that differentiates the Pre from the original iPhone is that it is the first to use Texas Instruments' OMAP 3430 processor, which runs at 600MHz and integrates several different functions, such as graphics processing, onto one single chip. The advantage to this, Vronko claims, is that the Pre can reduce the number of chips it uses in the device, thus lowering its power consumption and making its design more compact than other smartphones. To put it into perspective, the OMAP processor is "almost 50% faster" than the same class of processor used in the rival Apple iPhone. SAME AS 3GS

In addition to its processing capabilities, the Pre also features 256MB of memory from Elpida Memory, which Vronko says is "twice as much system memory than what's in the current iPhone." SAME AS 3GS
Hope this helps you oldtimer. Get an iPhone.

Jun 10, 09 - 05:18 pm Comment from: M. T. MacPhee

@Tomas

What iPhun said. The processors are a wash. Even if they were not, how the phones work is far more important than what powers them. Try them out and see which one makes sense to you.

Jun 11, 09 - 07:26 am Comment from: schmluss

I love how they say the chip in the Pre allows for smaller devices and longer battery life, but the Pre is thick and has short battery life.

Jeff B.: This is why I'm waiting on the iPhone 3GS. I'm a first gen iPhone user and I think that Apple will intro a new iPhone at the CES show in January.

The probability of that happening is pretty exactly zero. The iPhone obviously has a yearly upgrade cycle which is tightly coupled to the carriers' usage plan turnover. Apple introducing models mid-season would disrupt the carriers' operations and wouldn't help Apple in any way.

So if you really have such a hope, don't hold your breath. It's a long way to next June! wink
