T-Mobile to offer first Google Android phone; ‘big and bulky,’ it’s no Apple iPhone
Friday, August 15, 2008 - 01:50 PM EST

"Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA will be the first carrier to offer a mobile phone based on Google Inc's Android software, the New York Times reported, citing people briefed on the company's plans," Reuters reports.

"The phone is expected to go on sale in the U.S. before Christmas and perhaps as early as October, the paper said," Reuters reports.

Full article here.

Dan Frommer reports for Silicon Alley Insider, "Someone who's actually seen the gadget... tells us that both the hardware (from handset-maker HTC) and Google's Android software suffer from a similar problem: They're technically powerful but not as elegant as Apple's iPhone and OS X."

Frommer reports, "Specifically, the phone -- apparently a hot item to show off in Google's cafeterias these days -- is big and bulky, and not as sleek as the iPhone. And Android, while extremely powerful, has a less-elegant, less-user-friendly interface than the iPhone."

But it's excellent at sensing danger.

i think that Android is a good idea. it will bring a "real mobile" device to the masses. For those people that cannot get an iphone, or dont want one, Android will be a good choice.

"For those people that cannot get an iphone, or dont want one, Android will be a good choice."

Steve Jobs, however, plans to knock down every barrier between the people who can't/won't get an iPhone and the device itself. Price, size, various shapes and functions as the lineup expands. That's exactly what he did (and continues to do) with the iPod.

So if Android goes after those customers first then that's bad news for Apple.

There seems to be a chorus of Apple fans who don't want this battle to be between the iPhone and Android but Android and Windows Mobile instead. That doesn't make any sense. T-Mobile and Google want to eat into those holiday season iPhone sales just like everybody else with the phone you see in that video. Google has gone from friend to enemy.

People who choose that cheezy looking thing over the iPhone ....... deserve it.

that video is blurrier and lower res than the last video I saw of bigfoot.

this is fucking 2008, you'd think it would be possible to film with something better quality than a webcam from 1997.

I also like how the screen blacks out when it switches from portrait to landscape. Elegant!

Linux on the phone will be as streamlined, simple and easy to use as Linux on the desktop.

but will i have to recompile to install some apps?

Aug 15, 08 - 01:44 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

It's not that Android will be "good enough" for some consumers. It's that Apple's marriage to AT&T;in the U.S. market means there are millions of us who can't buy it even if we want to because of poor or no reception.

God I want an iPhone. Instead, I've got a Razr. One thing I won't do is settle for a bad smartphone. If Android is worthy, I'll probably bite . . . so long as it's fully Mac compatible.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Android based phones out in the publics. I want to see what interesting apps are made for it.

MDN, that headline doesn't make sense. Of course it is no iPhone. If it was, Google would be sued! LOL

I hope both Apple & Google control the main mobile markets!

Aug 15, 08 - 02:15 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

I can't say that first impressions make this a compelling device. probably will be better by sale time but looks more of a threat to Windows Mobile and other devices than to iPhone at this stage of the game if that brief encounter is anything to go by.

Aug 15, 08 - 02:24 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

I wonder if Eric Schmidt will give up his iPhone, for the Google Android phone?

He was given an iPhone, as he is on Apple's board of directors. Do you think he will dump it for the G1?

I hope Google comes out with an exchange program by Android release date so I can trade-in my iPhone for one of these technical marvels!

Just announced: Dell is hot on the heels of this announcement with their new Android phone as well. The High Energy Mobile Android phone, or HEMroid, will be Dell's biggest product yet.

Aug 15, 08 - 02:46 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

My take on why Android will fail:

It's just too much like Windows and Windows Mobile in that one company does the software and others do hardware — and some of the hardware will be fully touch screen while some have keyboards. Some will have faster processors or more RAM, etc. while the cheaper ones meet minimum specs.

It won't be a tightly integrated experience, and customer support will be a total bitch, too. Apple has a headache right now with its dropped calls fiasco, but just knowing it's one company with one device tells you it'll get taken care of.

Not so when 10 vendors, 50 devices and a separate software company are all in the kitchen at once (and that's assuming Android comes to fruition).

Aug 15, 08 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Gone Nuts

So no one has a touch-screen mobile phone solution or can even comprehend what it can be until the iPhone is released, then suddenly all anyone can do is poorly reverse engineer it.

It's a good thing that Google is on Apple's Board of Directors.

Why is he breathing so hard??? Thats just weird. Anyway, thanks for the video. When its released and it still runs like that, lets get a list of those "ANAL-lyst" declaring iPhone in big doo doo when it comes out. That way we can remind them of how anal they were on their prediction.

Look at Google's websites - what would one expect?

Google's success comes from being able to provide relevant search results and placing advertising around those results. But let's be honest, they don't get any points for style, aesthetics or elegance.

Google's websites and projects, IMHO, break so many UI rules, conventions and accouterments it's ridiculous. So why would anyone think that they could design something as elegant as the iPhone?

Design is a part of Apple's DNA and it shows in everything from their software to their packaging. Google may be able to make something powerful, but it won't nearly be as user friendly or elegant as Apple's. It's just not in Google's DNA. To be frank, Google was lucky. Right place at the right time with something that worked when all else was failing.

I've already switched from Windows Mobile, to the iPhone, but I do miss the full file system access. If something brings down the multi-touch revolution before it's mature, I might buy one. Don't hold your breath though.

thats a damn sidekick!

Aug 15, 08 - 05:24 pm Comment from: freebeer

I don't think there will be a major battle between Google and Apple. Fans of the iPhone and those holding their breath for Android are different. I still use Google Docs and my Gmail everyday, but my iPhone rocks. Google's appeal makes it more of a competition with other so-called enterprise and open source OS. More Apple-Google struggle may come only if major carriers and the lame corporate/enterprise IT sectors decided to stick with BB, Palm, and WinMo instead of Android. Then Android developers will have to focus on the consumer market instead of trying to convert the enterprise landscape.

"Then Android developers will have to focus on the consumer market instead of trying to convert the enterprise landscape."

Who says that Google isn't already focused on the consumer market? In terms of smartphones it's the largest, fastest growing and most prized segment and you think they're going to leave that alone and focus on enterprise? Lol.

You guys can make all the excuses you want. Apple and Google are going to butt heads over this one. Steve Jobs already recognized the storm to come when he said, "I now think Android hurts them more than it helps them. It’s just going to divide them and people who want to be their partners." He sure as hell wasn't referring to Microsoft.

What a piece of crap. The video that is. I would be humiliated to post such a blurry, jerky, mouth-breathing freek show. But I guess if the guy doesn't care about his weight then making bottom-of-the-barrel video isn't a problem.

I'm guessing that the tiny lens on his cheap phone video camera got smeared with potato chip grease. Or maybe he blurred it intentionally so we wouldn't notice the Cheetos dust all over the prototype. How many days until his heart siezes?
