Technologizer reviews Firefox 3.5
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 - 03:13 PM EDT

"Was it really fewer than five years ago that Firefox 1.0 debuted? Its arrival ended the dismal period in which only one browser–Microsoft’s mediocre Internet Explorer–seemed to be viable," Harry McCracken reports for Technologizer. "With Firefox, Mozilla proved that millions of people were itching to adopt a better browser. And today, we find ourselves with multiple better browsers: Not just Firefox, but also Google’s minimalist Chrome, Apple’s flashy Safari, the ever-inventive Opera, the highly social Flock, and even the no-longer-calcifying Internet Explorer 8."

"All of which means that Firefox 3.5–which Mozilla plans to formally release today–is no longer a shoo-in for the distinction of being the favorite browser of browser fans," McCracken reports.

"In many ways, today’s browser race really is a race: The single biggest trend in recent browser updates is an emphasis on speed. More specifically, an emphasis on optimizing JavaScript, the programming language that’s used on virtually all Web sites and which gives sophisticated Web apps such as Gmail much of their power. For Firefox 3.5, Mozilla created a new JavaScript engine, which it calls TraceMonkey. I used the industry-standard SunSpider benchmark, and found that TraceMonkey is zippy–2.6 times faster than the old Firefox JavaScript engine, essentially tied with Safari for second place, and just a smidge behind Google’s Chrome 2.0," McCracken reports.

"when you pry them from our cold dead hands"

Choose your words carefully. Most folks I have heard use words like those are dead. Most recently some old guy who reminded me of Moses with a rifle at some NRA event shown on TV.

@Rob

The guy you're referring to is the Farmer from Men in Black and I don't like your insolent tone! Not all of us can die for a cause as noble as defending our pickup truck.

I would like to combine the best elements of both Safari and Firefox!

Speaking of Safari, has anyone had a problem with Safari 4 crashing? I have archive and installed my OS and Safari 4 continues to crash.

Is there a way to return to Safari 3.x without having to erase. I think Safari 4 still may have some bugs to sort out.

Speaking of Safari... I've resisted the move to 4.0 so far. I love the snapback feature in 3.x. Is this feature in Safari 4.0? Anyone using Safari 4.0 know?

Jun 30, 09 - 04:04 pm Comment from: Yours Smugly

Surfing with FF 3.5 here. Yes, it's snappy. But I'd like to disable that annoying New Tab button in the tab bar. I already have one in the toolbar, thank you.

until there is something as comprehensive as the noscript plug-in I won't be using safari much.

Jun 30, 09 - 04:21 pm Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

I use both Safari 4 and Firefox. Firefox is nice for two reasons: it's extensibility (especially AdBlock Plus), and the Master Password feature. But Safari 4 is just so damn fast. I can't decide.

Jun 30, 09 - 04:23 pm Comment from: MrMcLargeHuge

@ByeTakeCare

I can't speak for the Mac version currently, but snapback still exists on the Windows version of Safari 4.

Jun 30, 09 - 04:23 pm Comment from: spencercal

Safari is fine, but my firefox plugins are irreplaceable. I upgraded my safari to 4.0 and its fast, but I can't run it for more than 10 minutes without the the thing freezing on me (and yes, I'm on a mac). Not worth messing with in my book for now.

Jun 30, 09 - 04:24 pm Comment from: pocketRocket

@golucid - I had the same problem until I removed ALL my internet plugins, every last one. I only then added a plugin or two when I needed it and I have only installed two now I think. Safari 4 hasn't crashed once since. It always crashed when I closed a Tab or Page and it was really winding me up.

Snow Leopard treats browser plugins differently - but I wasn't going to wait that long - it was really getting me down...

It's official, iTunes Store is coming to Mexico in Augusts!!! means that Apple is going to show something big in august. May be iPhone with Telefonica and American Movil in te same country (Telefonica just upgraded to 3.5G their network a few months ago and Telcel, Alias American Movil is already the official carrier of the iPhone in Mexico).

Jun 30, 09 - 04:56 pm Comment from: Cubert

ByeTakeCare,
Unfortunately they removed that feature. Maybe try Googling it to see if someone has found a preference file to change via the Terminal to restore that function.

Jun 30, 09 - 04:57 pm Comment from: Hg Wells

@golucid: I have had problems with Safari seeming to slow down significantly. It seems all right at the moment, but I agree that Apple may need to give it some attention.

"Was it really fewer than five years ago that Firefox 1.0 debuted? Its arrival ended the dismal period in which only one browser–Microsoft’s mediocre Internet Explorer–seemed to be viable,"

Ummm, clearly Mr. McCracken has completely forgotten about the Mozilla suite, which sure seemed "viable" to me.

"For Firefox 3.5, Mozilla created a new JavaScript engine, which it calls TraceMonkey."

"TraceMonkey is actually code contributed to SpiderMonkey from Tamarin, the ECMAScript engine Adobe donated to Mozilla." So, to say Mozilla "created" it is less than entirely inaccurate.

The new video features are interesting. Ogg really is an elegant system. Apple's Macs don't even come with Ogg support -even though it would be free to include.

Then, Firefox is really behind the curve in other areas. Oprah, Chrome, and Safari all pick up 100% on the Acid 3 Test. Firefox 3.5 still sees in the 90%'s. (Of course, they are still way better than IE 8 which sees in the 20's. Where the hell have you been MS?)

Jun 30, 09 - 05:16 pm Comment from: @dallas

Oprah made a webbrowser?! Is there anything she doesn't do?

MW: human, as in, "Is Oprah human?"

Jun 30, 09 - 06:39 pm Comment from: Mark S.

If you have problems with Safari crashing, most likely it's the plugins causing the crash.

Most likely.

Jun 30, 09 - 07:42 pm Comment from: WhozeYourMacDaddy?

I find it annoying to read articles mentioning Safari's impressive SPEED when the most recent version of of Safari has dramatically SLOWed all my Macs (both older power PC AND intel chip models).

The two very longest waits occur when I first attempt to log on to my home page (AOL), and anytime I click on a specific story in my Dashboad MacDailyNews widget. I watch the spinning wheel next to the "X" for approx. 30 seconds before anything happens. MacDailyNews stories then take a few more seconds to "build."

In case you're wondering, I pay a premium for high-speed 10 Mhz. broadband.

Any helpful suggestions? If not, I'd like my older version of Safari back.

It's not that Firefox is a bad browser. Ugly, yes; but it does its job reasonably well. On the other hand, that's not much of a recommendation. Firefox has had the great good fortune to become the browser of choice for untold numbers of dissatisfied Explorer users. But then, that's not much of a recommendation either.

Jul 01, 09 - 01:56 am Comment from: Golucid

@ Mark S.

I do not have any browser plugins installed that I know off. Safari 4 still crashes far too often.

I removed all preference files, reinstalled, checked disk for errors/permissions.

Any other suggestions?

No problems with Safari 4 here. I ran the BETA for most of the beta period and DID have it die on me every 2-3 weeks (yes, I keep my Mac Pro running continually). But the non-Beta version of Safari seems totally stable. I don't think I've had ANY crashes, freeze-ups, etc.

You could say the same about OSX couldn't you? Apple didn't really create it they just paid for the bits and put it together like a piece of IKEA furniture.

If you want to de-uglify FireFox, try these themes:

When Apple removed SnapBack from Safari 4... as well as other missteps... WHY, Apple, WHY?

Jul 01, 09 - 09:57 am Comment from: Yours Smugly

BTW, FF 3.5 finally updated the Firefox icon to a hi-res version, as can be seen in Finder. It's also a little bit glossier.
