Teen wanted Apple Mac for Christmas, got Dell coal instead, ends up tossing balky PC out window
Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:30 AM EDT

"A teen who wanted an Apple Macintosh computer (Mac) for Christmas after seeing one of the ubiquitous apple ads on the apple website, but instead got to inherit his father’s older Windows PC, finally got mad early Saturday morning and threw out the inherited Dell PC out of the window in a bizarre case of life imitating 'the internet world,'" hipFOX reports.

hipFOX reports, "The 16 year old boy, Dam Enkhbayar, threw out the computer after it froze while he was downloading video files online. The boy said, 'If this had been a Macintosh, I would never have had this problem.'"

Full article here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "Macaday" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: We only advise throwing Dells and other Windows PCs out of windows in cases where you are 100% sure that nobody will be hurt (as always, send your videos to ). As Dam Enkhbayar is from Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia, where the population nearly 1 million, the old "out the window with that Dell" might not have been the greatest idea. That said, we are intimately familiar with how Windows frustration can drive people at least temporarily insane. We recommend that Windows sufferers first count to ten and then make use of the Apple Recycling Program: Apple will take any old PC (or Mac) and recycle it for free when you buy a new Mac - no matter where you live. Too bad the kid didn't make a video of this.

That would have been great.

I think Apple should send him an iMac 20'.
He'd like that, and the follow-up story would get even more press coverage; good publicity for Apple.

Everybody benefits!

Feb 18, 07 - 11:55 am Comment from: psst... here's a secret, young man

psst... here's a secret, young man: applications freezing happen on a Mac too (with far less frequency than on Windows) so when you get you Mac, please don't throw it out the window.

Feb 18, 07 - 12:08 pm Comment from: Dolita

Now you know why it's called Windows.

Feb 18, 07 - 12:12 pm Comment from: Frank

Silly boy; should have thrown Dad out the window. Next time Dad, give your son something new and not your unwanted clunkers.

Feb 18, 07 - 12:13 pm Comment from: to psst...

Here's another secret for you. He didn't say the application froze, the entire PC froze. Now, applications do freeze on Mac, true, sometimes it happened to me as well. But the entire Mac freezing? Just Force Quit the application and get over with it.

Windows (the entire OS) freezes, witnessed many times, even running it on Parallels and the only way out is to reboot the crap. On Mac OS X? I never have to reboot the Mac unless for updates requiring it.

So, read the story more slowly next time: it would not have happened with a Mac OS X platform. The boy was right when he said 'If this had been a Macintosh, I would never have had this problem.'. He would have simply Force Quit the application (maybe Safari) and resumed the download from where it left. No biggie, no tantrum, no PC flying through the window.

Feb 18, 07 - 12:18 pm Comment from: C'mon, dudes...

It's effin' Mongolia- a Mac would probably cost his Dad a YEARS SALARY.

Go ahead and ask YOUR Dad to spend a year's salary on your next computer.

It's a cute story, but- grow up.

Feb 18, 07 - 12:31 pm Comment from: MacMental

PCs should be considered child abuse.

I let my five year old use a PC one day for some PC only game. You should have seen the look of frustration on his face everytime that piece of crap crashed. He would start banging on the mouse and almost start crying; the look he gave me made me feel guilty. We don't play PC games any more and he doesn't ask too either.

Feb 18, 07 - 12:33 pm Comment from: snowman

If I were his cheap ass parents, I'd be totally embarrassed. At least he was spared a brown Zune.

At least he learned young.

Feb 18, 07 - 12:40 pm Comment from: MacRaven

I think a psychological study should be done, exploring some research essay questions for PC users:

-Why does working with PC's makes you want to throw things? (ie. Chairs, computers, etc.

-How has Mr. Ballmer's chair tossing influenced you, as a PC user?

-PC users, please tell us what have you, personally, thrown so far?

-How do you feel after throwing the object?

-Did throwing the object solve your problem?
(ex: Mr. Ballmer's might answer: "Though it vented my rage, throwing the chair did not stop my employee from defecting to Google, nor solve my "rats leaving a sinking ship" problem.)

yes... it was a bratty thing to do.
yes... someone could have been hurt.
yes... it is not the way to solve a problem.
yes... a Macintosh in Mongolia probably would have cost an arm and a leg.... but...

if a kid in freakin' Mongolia can figure out the difference, why can't some of these fat, rich American adults?

My daughter's sister in law got a Zune for Christmas. She returned it three times for various problems. I saw her last Sunday using an iPod, she told me that the last Zune had died also, but instead of returning it she just went out and bought an iPod, it's been working fine for over a month. She keeps the old Zune in a drawer so that when the person who gave it to her asks, she can say that still has it, so as to not hurt any feelings, but she'll never give up her iPod, "it just works".

Ah yes, the Defenestration of Dell! I hope it does not touch off a religious war as the Defenestration of Prague did in 1618. But considering the zealotry of computer fanatics, I suspect it has the potential.

"That's a stupid question. He'll toss her out the window! Computer, wife, toaster... what's the diff?"

What's the difference? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

I'll tell you the difference. A toaster can turn a slice of bread into a delicious pizza snack.

THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE!!!

Wait, that's a toaster oven.

THROW THE DAMN TOASTER OUT, TOO!

You're right of course, especially compared to a third world country, but almost anyone who can connect to the web is spoiled to some degree.

....if I was actually in Hell I might want Windows only to make my hell more hellish...you know..I'd really be into burning sulphur and stuff but, or course, the devil would be up my ass about every little damn thing. In my own vision of hell the devil would be like a wmv file. He moves a little..then freezes....I can still hear his voice but visually he's more like bad stop animation. Man, the video in hell is the worst....and the fking reminders..oh, my God..every little thing. Hey, asshole. your sins are turned off..your humiliated soul may be at risk of redemption..or...Hey sewerhole, automatic updates to your nightmares need attention. I'm glad I finally found out that Gates and Ballmer are really the same person. It doesn't explain how they can appear in public as two people, though.. and sometimes be on two different continents at the same time.

Feb 18, 07 - 01:38 pm Comment from: Qka

In most communities, it is against the law to put your old PC out on the curb.
It contains lead, mercury, Windows, and other toxic substances.

Feb 18, 07 - 01:43 pm Comment from: msr

sounds kinda spoiled, but it's not like we haven't all felt that way smile.

Feb 18, 07 - 01:52 pm Comment from: ldm

What would really make this story is a video of the Dell going out the window.

Feb 18, 07 - 02:06 pm Comment from: maczealot

He needs to get a job to buy his own Mac. Now that he doesn’t have PC, I guess he no longer has to worry about downloading files, using email, surfing the web, doing his homework, ..... What a stupid, spoiled child.

Feb 18, 07 - 02:13 pm Comment from: The Real World of IT (Mongolia Branch)

What the article didn't report is that there was a crew of devoted
IT prrofessionals with Microsoft and Dell certfications outside of
the young man's house trying to catch that wonderful business-
grade computer.

This young man belongs in a poor third world country because
he will be poor all his life -- as long as he fails to embrace the
job producing & income generating Windows computing platform.

In Mongolia there are no jobs in help desks and corporate PC help
desks unless you are a Windows expert.

This young man is passing the opportunity of a lifetime to learn
Windows computer technology in his own home -- and on a
wonderful DELL pentium PC to top off his blessings.

He has less brains than the donkeys and goats that we use here
for our daily transportation and sustenance -- which are highly
energy-efficient and will someday be discovered in America an
other parts of the world as energy becomes more expensive.

The young man should have taken advantage of the opportunity
that his Dell computer crashed to practice for a rewarding career
in business IT helping the millions of Windows computers in
cubicles around the world -- that experience the same crashes
more frequently that MSFT would like to admit -- how to restart
their computers and say some mumbo jumbo to justify your job.

Can Apple offer the same career prospects and job security to a
young man? in Mongolia? Didn't think so either.

Clearly a case of throwing the baby out with the bath water.
Linux and a job would have been a better solution.

Linux would have gotten him by while he worked and saved his Tugrigs to buy an Apple.

"if a kid in freakin' Mongolia can figure out the difference, why can't some of these fat, rich American adults?"

Apple should go with a new tag line:

Apple: The PC choice of Mongoloids everywhere.

If it was my kid- he would have gone out the window too. I hate Dells / PeeCees but i hate ungrateful little bastards more.

Feb 18, 07 - 03:37 pm Comment from: Priused

This incident reminded me of the Saturday Night Live "Macintosh Jr. Parody" where one kid is able to do more with his Macintosh, then his PC using classmates.

You can see the video here (along with some other 'historical' Apple ads).

Saturday Night Live's Macintosh Jr. Parody

Quote from the quicktime video:
"Ya know, my Dad got me a computer but I can't do stuff like that. Maybe I'm just stupid". The other kid replies, "No, we're not stupid. Our Dads just got us crummy computers. We got crummy Dads.

Feb 18, 07 - 04:27 pm Comment from: Been There

I was in Ulanbataar Mongolia in NOV 2005 as part of a US aerial reconnaissance team when President Bush visited their capital city.
It is a very busy city, even in winter, as people bustle around. Throwing the Dell out the window probably was unsafe, many of the residents live in tall Soviet-era bland block apartment buildings. The boy must have been mad, though -- most Mongolians are Buddhist and peaceful, forgiving people.*
The Peace Bridge Hotel where I stayed had a PC for guests to use, it was on dial-up (<14.4 as I recall) and verrrrryyyy slllloooowwww... I didn't end up connecting, just said a polite "thank you" and waited until I got to Kadena AFB in Japan on my way home to check e-mail and IM with friends/family.
*Their conversion to Buddism in the Khan era is what led to their loss of an empire.

per capita income for 2005, based on each countries GDP:

#8: USA $42,000

#133: Mongolia $736

"for the year 2005 for all 180 members of the International Monetary Fund, for which information is available. Data are in United States dollars."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita

"Data on per capita income based on a country's total personal income are rarely available. The Gross domestic product (GDP) is more commonly used, however, the total personal income is generally lower than the gross domestic income."

Like I said: cute article, but- get real.

@ entanglement: "C'mon, dudes...:

I think Mongolia is destined to get an Apple dealership in about 3 years time... (where there are some very rich people these days).

Great line from Tempus Fugit:

And British...

I'd be mad too if I were downloading one of those kracked versions of 10.4 that runs on PC hardward, only to have it die in the process. Besides, don't people know by now that with a PC you have to erase and install every six months just to have stability?
